crackhaus: In which village did you grow up? Have you not noticed that it's mostly young Nigerians that support homosexuality? The older people (middle-aged and above) who might support it only do so because they want to belong, look cool/hip, and avoid being seen as as medieval. It is the same in several Europen countries. Young people tend to be more accepting even though there are several derogatory words used for this group of people and you will even hear very young boys call themselves 'gay.got' in order to insult one another, seriously or humorously. Why did people just suddenly start having children who were born gay only in the 80s and above? They existed before. And if you get yourself into Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome history, you will discover it. There were even gay marriages in Ancient Asia. Do you not see just how silly the idea that someone can be born gay is to anyone with common sense? No, I don't. If not for the internet, television, and travelling to the west...wetin concern Nigerians with homosexuality? Yeah, the West made Nigerian gays gay. The golden boys and girls (aged) in our society don't have gays/lesbians among them last time I checked...or maybe I haven't been lucky enough to see a 50yr old Nigerian who is gay. How did you check it? 1 Like |

Mindfulness:My dear no need to resort to ad hominem. At the risk of sounding arrogant as usual, I must inform you that I have no idea what growing up in a village might be like. No matter how wealthy anyone was in the early 90s, everyone watched their state-owned TV stations and NTA. It wasn't until late 1995/early 1996 that satellite TV began to come into the Nigerian market. There was a satellite TV called free-to-air a little before then though with the very wide dish-receiver which one could manually reallign with a remote from indoors, but it wasn't something most high-income earners even saw a need for. Don't make a joke of yourself. It is the same in several Europen countries. Young people tend to be more accepting even though there are several derogatory words used for this group of people and you will even hear very young boys call themselves 'gay.got' in order to insult one another, seriously or humorously. Then how is it that it's mostly young people that accept it? Answer that and you will understand the whole point of this. They existed before. And if you get yourself into Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome history, you will discover it.Have we suddenly travelled all the way to Greece now, we talking about Nigeria...please focus. Even in ancient Greece, homosexuality was still a deviant sexual behavior, not something that was accepted. Gay marriages in ancient Asia? Dude, this is crackhaus you're conversing with...you better provide examples of who and who were gay and got married in ancient Asia? Was it Emperor Han of the Ying dynasty? No, I don't.Of course you wouldn't know how silly it sounds because you're one of them . So tell us, why were there no Nigerians born gay in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s? Lmao... Joker! Yeah, the West made Nigerian gays gay.Be intelligible with me, I expect more from you than this usual remark from people who don't think past the length of their noses. Western influence made homosexuality acceptable, trying to claim otherwise is pathetic. How did you check it?Same way you checked and was so sure there was never any law in Greece prohibiting women from changing surnames after marriage. The difference however is that I actually know what I'm saying—you're free to ask anyone here if they've heard of a 50/60yr old gay Nigerian. Maybe I haven't heard of one and I'm willing to learn. 4 Likes |

Pls stop mentioning me when you're typing senseless comments. Instead of worrying about future pedophilia in the west , why not focus on its presence in your own country? Alive and kicking and happening every second. Crying more than the bereaved. Are we? I swear most Nigerians are ridiculous. (Including you) Is the focus on the west supposed to relieve you of the bad feelings that come with the horrible things that happen in your own country? Where humans are burned alive on the streets and unprintable things are done by those who have a little power over others. Like girls being stripped and flogged on video by men. Why are you (and indeed many Nigerians) addicted to masturbating over whatever you perceive to be bad news coming out of 'the west'. When you have a millions of it living with you and you're existing just fine. It's a trend but I don't know what to call. Like some hidden way to gloat over a country to make you feel better about yours. When you should be doing is working on your own country so that you have genuine reason to feel better about it. Cc pippimp. See the west bashing thing I was telling you about. This section is like hub of it. 5minsmadness: 4 Likes |

Before any denso misunderstands me, this is not to say bad things don't happen in the west. It's plain ridiculous and speaks volumes when citizens of a nation won't focus on what's wrong with theirs and try to fix (even if it's only with words. Yes words work). Instead get off at comparing their issues with other countries. As if to say if it happens there, then it's okay to happen here too. I know about the unsavory things that go in on parts of India (for example), you won't see me online whining about India when I've my own problems to fix. I don't get it. 5 Likes |

author=crackhaus post=48422669] Why so serious? I wasn't even talking 'bout people having sat TV in this context but about you not even hearing the word 'homo', 'gay' or 'fa.ggot' until the 90s. Then how is it that it's mostly young people that accept it? They are more exposed. Answer that and you will understand the whole point of this. I understand it but even before it was all over the media and this is the trend that is new even in what you call the West (whatever that means), I knew of their existence because people in this part of the world used words like 'gay.got' as early as in the 80s. I remember a childhood friend, a boy who was very different from other boys in school, always hanging out with girls and talking in an 'awkward' way. I also remember how he moved differently. We just accepted him the way he was even though some boys used to bully him but it was years later that I understood what it was about and I am quite sure that by that time nobody understood - not even him - why he was so different. If you say that he chose to be this way, then you really have no idea what you are talking about. Nobody can choose to act like this on a regular basis. It was long before we even hit the age of puberty. Have we suddenly travelled all the way to Greece now, we talking about Nigeria...please focus. Wrong! It was widely accepted for (even) married men had official affairs with younger boys. Gay marriages in ancient Asia? A same-sex union was known in Ancient Greece and Rome,[2] ancient Mesopotamia,[3] in some regions of China, such as Fujian province, and at certain times in ancient European history.[4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_same-sex_unions Hinsch, Bret. Passions of the Cut Sleeve: The Male Homosexual Tradition in China. Of course you wouldn't know how silly it sounds because you're one of them . We are on the same page here. The most ridiculous statement in this discussion for me is that someone actually chooses to be hetero- or homosexual. I don't remember choosing to like boys. It just happened. Suddenly we girls liked them when before we thought they were silly. So tell us, why were there no Nigerians born gay in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s? Lmao... Joker! You better first tell me how you can be so sure. I read an article a few weeks ago about Syrian refugees who are now free to come out in Europe without being persecuted. I am sure people there will also claim that ho.mos.sexuality is a Western invention. Be intelligible with me, I expect more from you than this usual remark from people who don't think past the length of their noses. Take it easy. Western influence made homosexuality acceptable, trying to claim otherwise is pathetic. Kuddos to them. Advanced as usual. Same way you checked and was so sure there was never any law in Greece prohibiting women from changing surnames after marriage. Still isn't. The difference however is that I actually know what I'm saying—you're free to ask anyone here if they've heard of a 50/60yr old gay Nigerian. You are entitled to your sentiments. |

The idea that African homosexuality was a colonial import is a myth Christian and Islamic forces fought to eliminate the 'unnatural damnation' and left behind a trail of homophobia Africa has 54 countries and more than a billion people. One of the most ridiculous myths about it is that homosexuality did not exist in the continent until white men imported it. Robert Mugabe is one such propagator, calling homosexuality "un-African" and a "white disease". Throughout history people everywhere have explored and experimented with their sexuality. The desire to do so has never been confined to particular geographical locations. Its reach is universal. Yet today the myth of a pre-colonial sexual innocence, or more fittingly, ignorance, is used to endorse anti-gay legislation and stir up homophobia and persecution in Africa. In my father's country, Nigeria, a new law passed in January carries a 14-year prison sentence for same-sex marriage and up to 10 years for membership or promotion of gay groups. In Uganda, the Anti-Homosexuality Act can impose life imprisonment. Latter-day evangelicals from the US are partly to blame for this continuing persecution, but so are Africa's political leaders such as presidents Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, who use rabble-rousing anti-gay rhetoric to increase their power base and popularity. While much has been written about this dangerous turn of events, little has been written about its origins. Two trailblazing studies in the field – Boy Wives and Female Husbands edited by Stephen O Murray and Will Roscoe, and Heterosexual Africa? by Marc Epprecht – demolish the revisionist arguments about Africa's sexual history. From the 16th century onwards, homosexuality has been recorded in Africa by European missionaries, adventurers and officials who used it to reinforce ideas of African societies in need of Christian cleansing. The Portuguese were among the first Europeans to explore the continent. They noted the range of gender relations in African societies and referred to the "unnatural damnation" of male-to-male sex in Congo. Andrew Battell, an English traveller in the 1590s, wrote this of the Imbangala of Angola: "They are beastly in their living, for they have men in women's apparel, whom they keep among their wives." Transvestism occurred in many different places, including Madagascar and Ethiopia. Among the Pangwe people of present-day Cameroon and Gabon, homosexual intercourse was practised between males of all ages. It was believed to be a way to transmit wealth. The Nzima of Ghana had a tradition of adult men marrying each other, usually with an age difference of about 10 years. Similar to the pederasty of ancient Greece, Sudan's Zande tribe had a tradition of warriors marrying boys and paying a bride price, as they would for girl brides, to their parents. When the boy grew up, he too became a warrior and took a boy-wife. In this same tribe lesbianism was practised in polygamous households. In the 18th century the Khoikhoi of South Africa used the word koetsire to describe men considered sexually receptive to other men, and soregus was the word they used for a friendship which involved same-sex masturbation. Homosexuality is also recorded among the Siwa of Egypt. It was considered a boy's rite of passage in Benin, and woman-woman marriages involving a bride price existed in more than 30 African societies from Nigeria to Kenya to South Africa. How far back can homosexuality be traced in Africa? You cannot argue with rock paintings. Thousands of years ago, the San people of Zimbabwe depicted anal sex between men. The truth is that, like everywhere else, African people have expressed a wide range of sexualities. Far from bringing homosexuality with them, Christian and Islamic forces fought to eradicate it. By challenging the continent's indigenous social and religious systems, they helped demonise and persecute homosexuality in Africa, paving the way for the taboos that prevail today. The main character in my latest novel, Mr Loverman, is a 74-year-old black gay man, Barrington Walker. Married with two daughters, he has been in the closet for 50 years. Soon after the book was published, a young gay man emailed me from Nigeria expressing his fear that his life would turn out like Barrington's. I didn't know what to suggest except that, if he wanted to live openly and legally as homosexual, he had to leave his homeland. What else could I say? Millions of gay people living in Africa face a similar choice. If they stay, they can either repress their natural sexuality or risk losing their liberty and their lives. The legacy of colonialism is alive and well. As another character in Mr Loverman says: "It's homophobia, not homosexuality, that was imported to Africa." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/mar/08/african-homosexuality-colonial-import-myth Homophobia was brought to Africa by white people, not homosexuality. cococandy: Believe it or not, i completely understand the way 5minsmadness is thinking because i used to think like that. Nigerians have a level of ignorance and bitterness unparalleled. Back in Nigeria, i thought my way of thinking was normal and everyone else was crazy. I never took the time to consider that if my way was normal and i had other like minded people thinking the same way, then my surroundings would be fine. I mean, i was thinking like a normal human being right? The economy would be fine, people wouldn't be burned in the streets on a daily basis, there wouldn't be trash littering every nook and cranny, policemen wouldn't be standing confidently in public collecting bribe like that was there job, etc. Nigerians don't want to understand that every country has issues and it is the magnitude and frequency of the issues that matters. What also matters is how you manage it as a people. Nigerians don't have a clue what their issues are or how to go about solving them but are quick to point out the perceived fault in others. They are a true example of the saying, "misery likes company". Since they are so depressed and unhappy, they are always on the lookout for the worst news to come of countries like the U.S.A, so they can say "ehen, i talk am. See wetin dem don do too". People like him don't understand that the solution to their problem is exposure. Once they can have access to it, their perception will change. The problem is just how does one get them exposed. 2 Likes |

Well I've lived in Nigeria all my life. Born and raised until very recently. And I don't agree with the mainstream opinions on many issues. So maybe that's not the problem. @bold is what really pisses me off. Like we are in some sort of childish competition with other countries (I.e the west). Your house is burning and you're gloating over your neighbor's house with the leaky roof. Pfft. I know for a fact that western countries do a better job protecting their children than we do. They don't kill them for being witches, marry them off at 11 or send off to labor in exchange for meals and basic education. I've even seen where molested children are blamed for it. With the common saying that children of nowadays are more exposed than before. Thereby implying that it's okay to sleep with underage children because they asked for it. So many appalling things that shouldn't happen to any kid alive happens to kids in Nigeria frequently and someone is here mentioning me over possible legalized pedophilia in the western future. Meanwhile it's already legal in his country. 5mins pls let this be the last time you mention me over this issue. It's annoying honestly. pippimp: 5 Likes |

Pointing out percieved faults in other countries isn't particular to Nigerians. What is Russia's business with Ukraine? What is America's business with the middle East or with any country developing nuclear weapons? What is America's business with countries that don't support the LGBT? What is the Republic of Korea's business with North Korea? If everyone in every country had been minding their own business from the start, the world wouldn't be in the shiit it's in now. Your opinion is a result of what I noted to Tim earlier... superiority complex, a mask for racial inferiority. Then you even went on to talk about exposure as the reason for a Nigerian's perception — oga let's assume this is even the case, what about some of your white slave-masters who still don't support homosexuality? Are you more exposed than those who were born and have lived their entire lives in the developed world? Are you more exposed than the western conservatives who still haven't given their full support to LGBT rights? Are you more exposed than the Chinese, or the Russians, or the Queen of England who believes marriage is between a man and a woman?
