WASHINGTON (AFP) – Some 700 million people worldwide, or more than all the adults of North and South America combined, think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and want to permanently move to another country, a poll showed Tuesday.

Residents of sub-Saharan African countries were the most likely to want to move abroad permanently, the polls conducted in 135 countries between 2007 and this year by Gallup showed.

On average, 38 percent of the adult population in sub-Saharan Africa, or around 165 million people, said they would up stakes and head for another country if they had the chance.


The most popular destination was the United States, where nearly a quarter of the 700 million -- around 165 million people -- said they would like to settle.


In joint second were Britain, Canada and France, each being named as the preferred destination of around 45 million people.

Thirty-five million said they would go to Spain, 30 million to Saudi Arabia, and 25 million each to Australia or Germany.

The least likely to want to emigrate were Asians -- only one in 10 Asian adults said they would move to another country.

Nearly 260,000 people aged 15 years and older were surveyed, either by phone or face-to-face, for the poll, which has a margin of error of around five percent.

The truth is, 9.99 people out of 10, in Nigeria, regardless of what people write online (and these people are like 0.0001% of the population anyway), are in Nigeria not by choice. Not a bad thing by the way, just the way it is.
99.99% of all Nigerians in the diaspora voluntarily migrated out of Nigeria. Which is not also a bad thing, just the way it is.

I would say I am in Nigeria by choice to some extent. But it's not the I-love-Nigeria choice, by the way. I started from the 99.9% who were forced to be here, and I worked my way into a better paradigm. Now at least I have the opportunity to eat my cake and have it. You can interpret that anyway you like.

Not that I don't love Nigeria, or want Nigeria to develop. But the truth is. . . why are we in denial? There are real problems. I for one don't think we will go the way of Somalia, but there are real problems preventing the nation from moving forward. And they are ethnic and political in nature. If they are not solved, we won't go anywhere.

Imagine, it takes like 30 years to build a structure like the third mainland bridge in Nigeria. If that is the speed at which we want to move, then I will be long-dead before we see public housing or stable electricity in Nigeria!

If you check london/abroad, our naija ladies are doing great, but no husband to marry them because every black naija guy has got the uglies fattest oyibo as a wife.

Since I moved abroad, I have never felt prouder to be a nigerian, infact I am relocating back by december.

In London, our guys ambition is simply to be an all night security guard, I am talking about masters holders oooooooo, either that or they sweep train stations and pick litter in trains, now there is nothing wrong with making a living. the proble is when these people want to return home, the go and use their hard earned savings to buy all the versace and hugo boss , this fuels the general nigerian thinking that jand is the ultimate. IT IS NOT!!!!!!! THERE IS NO FREEDOM OR HAPPINESS THERE PRONTO.

LOL. It didn't take 30 years to build 3rd mainland. But it took approximately 16 to complete (1976-1992). Feels like 30 sometimes.

That is generally unproductive. I don't see anything wrong in what the Diasporeans are doing. They are complaining about the state of the nation.
If you have truly been around the world (and I mean not online!), you'll agree that serious problem dey ground here. We are challenged by the most basic of stuff, crippled by political problems, tribalism, nepotism, religious bigotism and all the isms. I mean, other chaps have this, we're not the worst by a long shot, but we also are nowhere near the best. It's an African problem.

There is something many don't understand about living abroad. Happiness here is on auction and the highest bidder gets it. Winter is coming now and most cities will hibernate for the next 4 months. You are stuck in door unless you can afford a trip to Hawaii, or can afford to quit your job and go live in Arizona or have enough to live in Vegas. California? they have fire storm there. And people barely talk to each other If you have friends in Nigeria and you are happy there, just stay. Somedays I de pray make light go off here so people go comot from their video games and computers.  Nigeria is not that good but somethings present in Nigeria can't be found anywhere in the Western world. People here act like they have no souls at all. Like pre programmed zombies. People don't scream, they don't shout unless they are at a concert. They don't talk on the bus. If na danfo, you know say person go don start to yan about politics etc.  Don't ever take inter state buses here in the US or Canada. They are so boring !!!!!!!

Thanks for the concern but I'm not depressed at all. I know what I'm talking about even if you don't understand me clearly. Skiing? Yoga? Dance classes? what are you? old, rich white man? Don't know what happenned to my last post, I'll give it another shot so please apologies.
I choose to criticise or analyze issues affecting Nigeria because it is disheartening to see Nigeria become a laughing stock. If you are fortunate to travel, explore and live in other developed countries i am sure like myself you will ask yourself this question: why can't Nigeria be like these places?
I live in London, any parties or barbecues you attend will always have Nigerians discussing about Nigeria, it is always a highly charged subject and i know one or two people who are always nearly in tears about the sad state of affairs in Nigeria. Some people have chosen to not talk about Nigeria anymore because the subject is too painful.
Wole Soyinka mentioned in an article that we have become a nation of sycophants and perpetual praise singers in the face of ineptitude, some Nigerians will praise mediocrity in spite of the truth staring us in the face, for who long will our politicans continue this awkward dance? In Nigeria simple necessities of life are a luxury, my family and friends suffer from epileptic fuel shortages,inadequate or non existent power supply, poor road conditions and so on.
Make we continue to dey holla, swagga, notin dey happen and maga whilst other nations and its citizens forge ahead. Please stop asking why Nigerians abroad cry out because we love Nigeria.

u must be bitter about something 4 u to come up with these outrageous statements. I also live in London, west London to be precise and I can tell u I don`t have a single Nigerian friend or relatives working as a security guard and non is married to a fat or working class girl. Not that it would have mattered if some of them had these attributes that u find so disgusting. In all my years in England I have come across more Nigerians professionals and entrepreneurs than I have come across the road sweepers, security guards and toilet sweepers that u mentioned. I do agree though that most of them happen to be married or dating Caucasian women from all over the World as u do in London and most of those women have at least a bachelors degree, are usually very good looking and from a privileged upbringing. Does this mean most Nigerians in London are professionals and business owners, based on my experience, of course not, this is just my experience of London. Don`t use Ur existence in London to put all of us Niger Londoners in the same bag. U need to visit different parts of London to have a more balanced view.
