I later told you of issue revolving around Aburri and confederation. I mentioned creation of states BEFORE the war by Gowon. whats the fuss? What are we arguing about? And you are quoting yesterday writer like Max when on this thread up-to 5 books written by players and direct observers in those events have been mentioned. And Max is comparing Isreal with Biafra? You are juxtaposing an Isreal that had all western support post world war after the genocide with a Biafra standing against Britain USSR and the rest? You just trying to muddle up the whole discuss.., Get a grip bro.. |

Eledan: I know where you are coming from.. You know the irony of that story? Most of the soldiers that followed Nzeogwu to Sarduanas coup were Northerners. Don't take my word for it. Read up on that. He informed them of what they were about to do and they never disagreed. The next day after that event, there were reports of jubilation is several northern cities. Dont take my word for it, google it. The fact is that from the time of the western crises uptill the night of that coup, people have become disillusioned with events politically. And that feeling was felt across the country. Many people supported Nzeogwu. .. Things started to change few days later when the Hausa service of the BBC started to frame the whole thing as an igbo coup. It started taking the form of an igbo quest, and igbo agenda as the british using the BBC went into overdrive. Understandably, several northern officers, the likes of Babangida Danjuma and buhari included, felt offended with the killing of their ethnic men in the military and over the next few month, opportunistic politicians helped to inflame passions against the igbo and the progrom started... Do you know that Nzeogwu left Kaduna by himself. handed power over to Hassan Katsina and flew into Lagos to be arrested by Ironsi after sending Obasanjo to go and negotiate with Ironsi? Do you know that several northern politicians were arrested by Nzeogwus troops and were never harmed since they werent as dangerous to the system as the antagonistic Sarduana? All the time he was in the north, nobody tried shooting or harming him and this was the same northerners that killed every thing igbo 6 months later.. 4 Likes |

owodokiri: Oga, you are the one that needs to get a grip, o!! You stated clearly in an earlier post that Ojukwu went to war because of Ogundipe. That claim was debunked. You later denied it. Your post in which you made that statement was then called up as evidence. Then you digressed and spoke about police action. Sources were cited to show what led to the police action (i.e. Ojukwu's rejection of decree 8, the killing of Nd'Igbo in the North, and subsequent appropriation of FG assets in his region etc.). Max Siollun is one of the respected chroniclers of the civil war and the events that preceded it. So he was cited as a source. But you have called him a 'yesterday writer' simply because you do not like his impartial views. Now you are accusing me of muddling things up. How? Please get a grip, o! |

HaVe a nice day.. NB About Max, i was referring to his Isreal vs Biafra comparison... I dont think there are much differences with what he said and what i wrote. I didnt mean that the ONLY reason Ojukwu went to war was cos of Ogundipe.., dont even know how you came up with that.. , because i asked a question about Ogundipe? I mentioned Ogundipe to inform the person i quoted that Ojukwu didnt wake up to declare a war. Neither did he insist on an igbo leadership only.. You are just desperate to approach the discourse from the pettiest angle and you latched on that. Go back to my several posts here and understand my position. |

Justdulla: You are right my brother, But have you ever seen any region clamoring for break up if not the IBO's, And the same Ibos clamouring for break up are not united, Their leaders are not supporting them it's just the gullible and greedy ones among them that are agitating. Where is Unwazurike today? He formed Massob and agitating then but immediately he was given money he keep shut and now attacking Nnamdi Kanu are they United in their struggle? I have said it if Ibos truly want to go, They should stop participating in any election, They should not contest for any post and accept Ministerial appointment and then the world will take them serious. 3 Likes |

Nzeogwu and his young crew were hero material who though inexperienced and over zealous, really meant well for their fatherland and had the balls to stake their lives and challenge the status quo unlike todays youth who spend all their time taking selfies and yapping on social media. "Contrary to the load of wicked propaganda that has since been heaped on us, there was no decision in our meeting to single out any particular ethnic group for elimination or destruction. Our intentions were honourable , our views were national and our goals were idealistic. We intended that the coup should be national in execution so that it would receive national acclamation. We planned that the use of force should be minimal so that our methods could at once be seen as superior to those of the politicians, who simply went on killing the very people they were called upon to govern. The need to bring more of the middle level officers (Majors and Lieutenant – Colonels) was discussed. But the few names that could be mentioned had to be dropped because their interpersonal connections would compromise the security of the planning. After ninety minutes of discussion, the meeting was over. We dispersed as if from a prayer meeting since it was a Sunday and the Lord was in our midst…….." - Major Adewale Ademoyega from his book "Why we struck" |

All the points you made were duly noted, and I responded to them citing various sources. You are the one that chose to ignore them, because they did not fit into your preconceived notions. It's the same way you are jettisoning Max Siollun's observations, now. His reasoning is very simple really. Isn't it better for a man (i.e. Ojukwu) to take 80% of what is on offer, and then go back to re-negotiate for the remaining 20% at a later date, than to reject everything outright, in a bid to get 100% and then still be left with 0%? You sef, check am nah! This was what informed Siollun's comparison of Israel and Biafra. |

He was born in 1937 in kaduna. A Sandhurst trained Nigeria military officer n one of its finest at that. Self disciplined and morally upright. Unlike most of his colleagues he never indulged in lewdity. He abhors corruption especially the 10 percent politicians of the first Republic was collecting in contract. He along with four majors of Eastern Nigeria extraction, save major ademoyega from the west, taught they could oust the corrupt politicians of the first Republic and hand over power to a none corrupt leader. He was exceptionally popular among his colleagues and feared by even his superiors. He was patriotic Once he thought of migrating from Nigeria to China if the corruption in d first Republic continues. "In the book, why we struck," by Major Ademoyega, he referred to Nzogwu as a detribalised Nigerian and a fine officer. He was friend to Obasanjo but kept Obj in d dark about the next day coup of 1966, hence Obj never forgave him. Leadership of the first coup was thrusted upon him by the real leaders- major Ifeajuna who was the first Nigerian commonwealth Olympic medalist and major Nwabosi. His full name was Major Chukuma Kaduna Patrick Nzogwu...Kaduna was added cos of the tradition of Northerners adding to their names places of birth. He was successful in executing the coup in the North his area of jurisdiction. He killed the Sarduana of Sokoto, sir Ahmadu Bello along with his wife, Colonel Sodeinde and Brigadier Ademulegun with his wife. However the coup though succeeded largely in the West, North an partially in Mid-west was betrayed in the East by self-serving officers assigned to execute I tgere. hence it was given ethnic colouration against the intentions of the leaders. He was forced to surrender to Ironsi now led Federal government. He was incarcerated but not tried by the new military leadership because opinions were divided regarding the coupists some hailed them for overthrowing the inept n corrupt civilian government, others especially in the north saw them as disgruntled military officers who out out be tried for treason. And so when the civil war broke out as a result of the counter-coup of July 1966, which saw then Colonel Yakubu Gowon succeed late Major Gen Ironsi as military Head of State, he was released from prison by then secessionist leader, Colonel Ojukwu to fight for Biafra. A truly misunderstood officer, disillusioned with happenings in Nigeria, he roared into the war as a one man square Armoured Personnel carrier (APC) fighter. A devoted Roman Catholic. His last words to his mother was that of courage. While his fellow coup leader also fighting for biafran army was executed by Ojukwu for treason, another buried alive, Major CKP Nzogwu would die by a sniper bullet of the federal soldier in 1967 at the young age of 30 unmarried . He was immediately recognised, flown to Kaduna and given full military Honour. Nzogwu an enigma, a detribalised Nigerian who believed in a corrupt -free and working Nigerian. He spoke hausa fluently, befriended many northerners amongst whom was late Major katsina hassan who became military governor of Northern region Though his places among Nigeria great nationalists is assured, the role he played in building a greater Nigeria where things work will remain an issue of discussion by political scuentists/historians. He believed democracy must serve the people and not few political class, and where democracy falters, corrupt and become oppressive, it must be overthrown and replaced by benevolent government. He always used China as yardstick of how Nigeria in the 1960s should go. Shortyy: 1 Like |

Justdulla: Yes, Nzeogwu was a good man. Still well respected by the Nigerian Army even though he died as a Biafran officer, but Nzeogwu was not a very stable man. It was even said that he had no respect for his superior officers. He was just as overzealous as the other men involved in the coup. The only way his collaborators let him down was by not killing Aguiyi Ironsi. There were reports that Nzeogwu was mad when he learnt that Aguiyi was not killed as planned. But apart from that, they were all overzealous that night. They intended to kill without applying caution. 1 Like |

When democracy becomes a clog in the wheel of development n progress, it must be overthrown and replaced by benevolent government even if dictatorial. China doesn't practice democracy but today it is the second largest economy in the world. That why I laugh at those who accuse Buhari as a coupist despite the undeniable fact that the Shagari administration he ousted was worse off than that of balewa's first Republic Nzogwu overthrew. Honestly Nzogwu and GMB remained my two revered heros. To hell with our pilfering and destructive democracy. Fedayeen02: |

You. Right. The aburi meeting was called by late Ghanaian leader Joseph Ankra with a view of finding settlement between the Eastern Region. The aburi meeting agreed on a federation with a loose centre...in a nutshell a kinda confederation. But on getting home Gowon having been tutored on the consequence of his accord. Sadly Gowon reneged. Truth is there still could have been amicable solutions. Two days before Ojukwu declaration of Biafra, Awolowo flew to Enugu to try to persuade Ojukwu against such move, it failed. Truth is both leaders-Gowon n Ojukwu were young. Gowon was 30, while Ojukwu 33. Youthful exuberance played a major role... Justdulla: |

The Igbo officers who didn't fight still had their ranks intact but he just resumed off prison as a consequence of his failed coup. If he had wanted secession, I don't think he would have initiated a coup. He would have just seceded. Circumstances forced his hands to join his brothers in the fight. Kaduna said it himself that secession wasn't the solution |
