I remember the morning we are to leave camp to our respective PPAs. I and a friend finished eating and a woman walked toward us and asked if we were through with the food in our plates. Me thinking she worked there told her to go ahead and collect the plates, thinking she was going to wash them. She poured the leftovers into her son's plate to eat. I can only think of one thing in that scenario......poverty! It will never be well with out leaders both dead and alive! 8 Likes |

BeeBeeOoh: The Senator is being politically correct. Beating around the bush and not really saying anything tangible. The Reason? Education. That's the solitary reason. And this lack of education— Western education and not Islamic education— is being enabled by the Northern Elites. Because with education, the Northern elites and politicians will not be able to mentally subjugate the masses especially during elections. With education, the Northern masses are more likely to become economically empowered and hence less dependent on this politicians and elites. With education, the Northern elites and politicians will face an angry and enlightened masses who will turn against them. So they continue while, of course, they send their children and wards to the best schools— to be educationally empowered to continue the subjugation. 8 Likes |

quickly: This is not necessarily true. There are many Muslim countries that are among the richest in the world both in terms of human development, natural resources, and the way these resources are used. The problem of Nigeria's North is not Islam after all, a huge population of the south west and south south people practice Islam too. Rather, it's the rulers the region has been cursed with that have used wrong religious doctrines to keep down their people in order to perpetuate themselves in power. You can also say the culture too is also a major contributory factor. 2 Likes |

He dealt with the surface issues and not the structural problem of the various useless Emirs and Imams who do nothing but hold the people in a position of permanent servitude. I don't see a way of moving the northern masses forward so long as those elements look to retain power. 2 Likes |

The main reason is that begging is in their blood. An average northerner will never go out to hustle for work unless there is someone who has promised to help him. |

DaudaAbu: According to your very conservative estimate, let's do a little maths. Time wasted per day is 75 minutes which is 1 hour 15 minutes. 75 X 7 days means time lost in a week is 526. 05 minutes which is = 8 hours 75 minutes. A month is 2250 minutes which is = 37 hours 5 minutes. Therefore, in a single month a Northerner wastes 1 day plus 13 hours in the mosque. Assuming the population of the North is 50 million people as they claim to be the largest population, that would be at least 50 million days wasted collectively in a month. 50 million days = 136,986 years!!. This's your collective time wasted in mosques just per month o!. When you input the total population of the North and do the maths you'll discover that little 75 minutes per day costs you a fortune. 4 Likes |

Sanni, simply put, your people, culturally or genetically, have consistently lacked the traits of resourcefullness and self reliance to measure with their southern counterparts. Part of the south that had nothing after the civil survived and became the cynosure of all eyes in Africa. Honestly, your people would need genetic re-engineering, if there is any thing as such. That said, if that region were to be in Niger republic, there wouldnt have been any need to complain. The difference wouldnt be there. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Their main problem is that many of them don't have common sense. They have brains but cannot use it. Or how do you explain someone tying a bomb around their waist to kill others. Any normal human being with the tiniest brain would ask why the commander (boko haram) cannot kill himself first instead of sending others. How can somebody tell you to go and die and you don't even take a second to think about it. They just follow orders like mummies. It's quite unfortunate. You don't have to be educated to be able to use your brain to think out the simplest thing such as not losing your life for some MF elites. 4 Likes |

Re: 6 Critical Reasons Why Northern Nigeria Remains The Poorest - Sen. Shehu Sani by oluamid(m): 11:56pm On Feb 25, 2017 |
mmsen: There's actually a difference between using Arabic to teach and Islamic education. I concede though that majority of what they do in Northern Nigeria is Islamic education which is based on the Koran. All countries use the resources they have to achieve their ends and you can't fault the Arab world for exploiting their oil and gas. Most of the scientific developments we have in the west today was based off what Arab scholars achieved so its not as if the Arabs too have been slacking. The problem with Africa generally and Northern Nigeria specifically is that we seem to have taken everything bad those who gave us their religions had while leaving out the good. 3 Likes |

oluamid: I don't fault the Arabs for using their resources I do however fault the northerners for refusing to exploit theirs using modern technology. As to your point about taking the good points from the religions - if we did that there would be little or no religious division because the values that are good are universal. Respecting your environment and your fellow man is not particular to any one religion. Cleanliness is not particular to religion. The only elements particular to the individual creeds are the outlandish, unfounded and destructive beliefs - that an illiterate man wrote a book; a virgin gave birth; kufrs should be killed; marrying children is acceptable; not recognizing god is a sin and a greater grievance than rape. You do not need religion to teach morality. You don't need religion to teach anything worth learning. 4 Likes 1 Share |

BeeBeeOoh: I agree with your points Sir but, I think you omitted one important factor.. ''Illiteracy/ lack of basic education''. When you educate the youths, they are empowered, and can't be brainwashed by neither politicians nor religious bigots/ extremists to take up arms, they will know the value of human live. Let's stop taking undue advantage of their ignorance. 1 Like |
