quickly:Ordinarily I wouldn't have dignified you with a mention but for the sake of claity. Islam doesn't hinder human growth and development and it isn't in support of people taking begging as a profession. One of the jurists in Islam Imam as-Shafi'ee said after the science of hadith what one should learn is science of medicine, this man died. The famous exegete of the Qur'an Imam at-Tabari was a mathematician, Ibn Taymiyyah another scholar was a philosopher what about Ibn Khaldun he was a sociologist. I can go on and on and name others who are successful in their chosen fields. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Youngzedd: dokyOloye: What you guys don't realise about the north is that for decades now, there has been a deliberate alienation of the poor from education by the elites. There used to be that mentality of "who would serve the elites, if the poor go to school, and get empowered?" It has nothing to do with religion btw because Muslims in the SW are doing excellently well in different fields both children of the poor, and rich. I know too many people from humble backgrounds who are well educated, and are masters in their various fields. Even the children of the elite in the north, both male and female are experts in their chosen professions unless they decide not to pursue a career. Most of the elites educate their children to the highest levels and are served by the children of their parents servants. If they have a govt with strong political will, they can do a lot in terms of education for the poor. Its not enough to provide free meals. It should be mandatory for teenagers who have chosen not to go to school to attend some skill acquisition classes, so more skill acquisition schools should be provided. Even in the south, not everyone goes to school, but they still engage in something. Open mechanic workshops around, tailoring workshops, etc. Make it mandatory for parents to send their children. If you're going to entice them, do that not with free meals, but with something else they'll have access to after COMPLETING the school or skill acquisition If it means setting up those programs with the mallams of the almajiris, then do so. Work closely with those mallams (though some of them are evil and torture the boys). Make sure the mallams are registered with the govt, and can be easily monitored. Anyone found wanting should be dealt with. 2 Likes |

OkoYibo: the only rich muslim countries are those with a natural source of wealth which made them rich by accident like Saudi Arabia. The Dubai you mention does not operate like an Islamic country, they keep small families and lastly still relies heavily on natural oil wealth as it seeks transition to a service economy. islam is poverty and poverty is islam simple 3 Likes 1 Share |

Omudia: Muslim scientists and inventors, including Arabs, Persians and Turks, were probably hundreds of years ahead of their counterparts in the European Middle Ages. They drew influence from Aristotelian philosophy and Neo-platonists, as well as Euclid, Archimedes, Ptolemy and others. The muslims made innumerable discoveries and wrote countless books about medicine, surgery, physics, chemistry, philosophy, astrology, geometry and various other fields. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2010/feb/01/islamic-science 1 Like |

mmsen: I wasn't talking about the religions per se but the culture/mindset of those who brought it to us. Those that brought the religions seem to have a questioning mind which have allowed them to look beyond what their religion says to questioning known knowledge, something we in these parts have mostly ignored. Rather, we follow the religious teachings only and get blinded to everything else. It's like a dog to a bone. I share the sentiment in your last paragraph. |

OkoYibo:Bingo! The Northern elites have an antiquated mentality that is based on the feudal past. They see and treat Nigeria as conquered territory, to be continuously subjugated and plundered. They are very irresponsible with power, otherwise their greed for power and their stranglehold on power should have made the northern region a much more progressive region than the rest of Nigeria. Look at Gowon, Shagari , IBB, Abacha, Yaradua and now Buhari. Except for the amiable Shagari, we see the same repeating patterns of abuse and irresponsible use of power. They take national power as some kind of family propert and inheritance , and not as a temporary public Trust, as it is supposed to be. For good example, just look at the last one month of Osinbajo's leadership, his honesty, openness, and then compare with the last 2 yrs Buhari's opaqueness , insensitivity ,aloofness , arrogance and divisiveness. They are like night and day. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

musicwriter: I'm no Muslim but don't give a dog a bad name to hang it. The average Nigerian Christian spends at least 8hrs or even more in the church weekly (Sunday service, weekday fellowship, Friday night vigils) so you can actually calculate the same thing you did above for them too. If you are a Christian then you should be asking yourself the same questions. 1 Like |

Omo Owo mi da are a much more culturally entrenched, permanent and much more pernicious cancer than Niger Delta militancy. Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain are not example of developed or hardworking nations. It is Europeans, Americans and Asians that developed their nations for them in exchange for crude oil money. Selling crude oil (natural resources) in your land to build fine houses, hotels, markets, etc and buy luxury cars doesn't make you hardworking... If crude oil dries up forever, all Arab countries except Iran will become poor and miserable. Arab people are lazy people, they aren't hardworking. How many technology, startup, scientific innovation or global solution were discovered by Arabs I am sure none! Without being religious, of all the over 15 different religions in the world, Islam is known for producing lazy, dependent people, why Muslims spend time studying their holy book; Quran instead of studying innovative books that proffer real solutions to global problems. Muslims religiouslize everything they do; their school is all about Quranic principles instead of science, technology, human capital development, modern leadership and management skills. A Muslim child spend more time cramming Arabic Quran while his/her mates are busy learning scientific/technological principles. In summary, Islam is one of the problems facing the north. They should throw away the Saudi Arabia type of Islam they practice and emulate Iran's type that focuses more on technology development. Egypt used to be the bedrock of world technology until Mohammed conquered Egypt and introduced Islam which helped to draw Egypt back in terms of education and technology. Northern Nigerians must learn to stop being extreme in their practice of Islam....they should learn from the Yorubas. Northern Nigerians must stop practicing that part of Islam that encourages polygamy cos it breeds unwanted children which makes it difficult to cater for and hence, increased beggars, robbers, terrorists and dejected people! 2 Likes |

I really can't i identify the problem with the northerners even the educated ones reason like a cow but I don't blame the few educated ones bcoz the see it as a way of eating from the natns cake but doesn't have any impact in their reasoning 1 Like |

The main reason why north is poor is there is no real leader to lead their people to success. Look, yoruba people are also very poor. We dont have that kind of real leader. Awolowo was a real leader that saw common people as his family members. He was really concerned about them living good lifes. Awolowo and his guys were successful leaders because they led with clear roadmap and love of their people. But today in nigeria we have just noise makers "leaders". Those that are doing politics just for politics purpose. |
