If he doesn't love the place, let him go back to his choked concrete jungle. This is Lagos, pure natural and smog free beautiful city.

There is nothing wrong with what he said in that video. We are just boiling over nothing. If that is not classical Lagos view then what would that have been

Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by klassyguy(m): 2:40pm On Jan 03, 2010
i'm sorry to say, but the guy is one ignorant slowpoke. i believe he is always blindfolded anytime he drives out of the airport to his destination, cos how will he say that the airport is the only "green" area in lagos?
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by 4Play(m): 3:02pm On Jan 03, 2010
The guy exaggerated a bit but Nigerians always love to throw a tantrum when our beloved cities are shown up for what they really are . . . . sh*tholes.

Very few foreigners from developed nations will visit Lagos and not come back with a very negative impression. The sooner we accept reality, the better.

Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by naijaking1: 7:13pm On Jan 03, 2010
The general Nigerian attitude to problems vs the problems themselves, I don't know which is worse.
Somebody tells you, hie, you have a piece of leaf hanging from your teeth since yesterday, instead of thanking him for reflecting the obvious, we spend a huge amount of time, energy, and even money attacking the person. First, we attack the way he reminded us that our tooth is dirty, then launch an attack on him and possibly his family too, finally, we disagree with the manner he spoke. We do everything but pull the dirty leaf from our teeth, rinse our mouth, and correct the problem. Subsequently, the leaf continues to decay, rotten and possibly subject us to disease as we spent energy in the wrong direction.
If it takes a whiteman, a foreigner, or an alien to remark that our town planning efforts are actaully detrimental to our own very existence by way of not having enough greenery to absord carbon dioxide, release oxygen, check erosion, and reduce the impact of thunder storms, then so be it.
It's possibly only in Nigeria that government official routinely ignore environmental impact of trees, vegetation, and other ecological enhancements. Thank a whiteman for bringing this up.

You are a naijaking? Why not thank a whiteman for giving you life and the air you breath, you goon?

Confused moda-f--kers like you are the reason Nigeria will never make it.
One example:
Enugu--- during the colonial era, we had significant open spaces mixed with and blended in with residential areas: Polo Park, Gulf course, Botanical gardens, etc.
In less than 20 years, succeeding local adminstrators carved up, divided amonst themselves these vital ecological shock absorbers of the system either because they didn't understand the importance, just like your dumb ass, or they're simply malicious.
Once again, the whiteman took time and pain to plan, and it took us less than a minute to destroy everything.
Do your stupid self a favor, go see how other civilized people's of this earth develop, maintain, and sustain their own environment, it shouldn't take a whiteman to bring it to your attention.

Very frew Nigerians will travel outside Nigeria and then come back without having a big NEGATIVE impression of Lagos. For Godsake what people take for granted in the developed nations and what is availabe to the majority of the population (poor and rich) in Nigeria is for few privileged.

The whole issue of desert encroachment would have been improved if only our policy makers would take just one credit hour of ecology. Not just the whiteman, but anybody flying from America or Europe would immediately notice the man-made desert we're creating all around Nigerian cities in the name of development. Even Abuja, with it's purported modern planning looks bad from the air and much worse when you land.

Beautiful with mountainous rubbish heaps and smoke filled skies from garbage burning? Ain't nothing pure about Lagos bro - maybe the fumes and dust are affecting you. grin

Lagos doesn't need smog - the smoke, particulates and other pollutants have dulled the blueness of the sky more than enough. sad
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by Roforofo(m): 5:53pm On Jan 04, 2010
The guy is not lying. Lagos is a hell hole for most of it's inhabitants. Yes there are nice parts with parks and greenery and nice houses with big gardens, swimming pools etc but these are for the wealthy minority. The vast majority of ordinary Nigerians in Lagos live in very poor conditions and there is nothing shameful about acknowledging the truth. It is only when we accept the truth that change can start to occur.(e.g Fashola's beautification projects, installation of traffic lights, clearing of refuse from the roads, stopping indiscriminate cutting of trees etc). There is no point constantly getting angry when a bad word is said about our country. Like Fela said on video in his documentary "Music is the Weapon of the Future" which was filmed many years ago, "our rulers should stop deceiving the people and comparing Nigeria to America or the Europe, make we face ourselves for Africa, things our bad in our own country, I want my people to know that as citizens of Nigeria, if you feel bad about it do something about it"

Foolish man, oloriburuku omo ale

so when the pilot and the cabin crew tell the passengers to switch of all electronic devises until after landing and the aircraft comes to a stop, he's busy filming from his phone or whatever. If na black man do that now they'll say he's jeopardizing the lives of other passengers!

The guy should be arrested and given the 'terrorist's treatment'
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by DaddyMike: 6:15pm On Jan 04, 2010
Dear all,

Let's all chill a bit. The white dude is correct: Lagos is one vast, ugly, stinking humongous ghetto. An insult and a poor imitation of a Mega city. Not even the so-called highbrow area is exempt. Try 2nd Ave in Ikoyi from Kingsway/Alfred Rewane road going towards Obalende and tell me if that's not the definition of a slum roadway. Or, go to Ijora Badiya or Ikotun/Igando.

Until we all realize we have got a problem, we will never be able to solve it. Peace out!

If you say Lagos is smog free, then we are not talking about the same Lagos. People should not be infuriated by an oyinbo man who is clearly speaking the truth. The only part of the video during which I see is a problem is the satirical manner in which he referred to cutting the grass in the airport by hand. Otherwise, he was speaking the stone-cold truth: Lagos barely has any green space; the atmosphere is saturated with smog, smoke, and dust; there are squalid houses with "pan" roof tops built on lagoons, interspersed in human waste and trash. Only the elite reside in decent houses and travel around in comfortable cars.

I wondered about that too.

The video is very boring by the way.
