There is nothing wrong with what he said in that video. We are just boiling over nothing. If that is not classical Lagos view then what would that have been

Maybe I'm missing something. I certainly didnt see what was so wrong in what he said, either. Oh well, you cant understand everything I guess.

Beautiful with mountainous rubbish heaps and smoke filled skies from garbage burning? Ain't nothing pure about Lagos bro - maybe the fumes and dust are affecting you. grin

Lagos doesn't need smog - the smoke, particulates and other pollutants have dulled the blueness of the sky more than enough. sad

In the US, they say the 2 things you can't burn are the dollar bill and your trash.
I was in Lagos and Abuja last week, and I saw people frequently gather their trash in front of their houses/stores, set it on fire, and then sit back and inhale the very toxic trash they were trying to discard.
Do we need a white man to "insult" us into knowing that our own trash is going to kill us? No.

Okay guys, I did not put the video up, to suggest that what the guy said was totally wrong.

The crux of the matter is that he posted this on Youtube with utter Sarcasm.

Sarcasm is a form of mockery.

The dictionary decribes this term as the 'rhetorical device of using a characterization of something or someone in order to express contempt.[1] It is closely connected with irony, in that the two are often combined in the same statement'.

This guy could have made the statement without Sarcasm and many of us would have concurred with him. We all know that Lagos is not perfect and that Fashola is rapidly making great progress in attempts to restore this great city to its former glory.

Many westerners travel to our dear country to reap millions from mouth watering contracts while laughing behind our backs calling us backward and stupid.

Now this is something I find offensive.

Spot on. The video is rather bland. Nothin really wrong with it though. But the guy's sarcasm was unbelievable. Besides, many of the things he said are false. Many pple on here are saying the guy dint say anything wrong. I'm sorry but that is just plain colonial mentality. Question is, would you allow a frigging white man to say derogatory things about you in person?

I agree with one thing though, the video is spot on, but taking shit from a fellow Nigerian is one thing, taking shit from a lime-scale entity gets my goat any-day

This is not about somebody saying something derogatory about us in person, this is just someone that flies in and out of Lagos and making personal observation of what he sees.

Tell, is it not cutting grass by hand that we don't do? Right now, I can imagine one of my brothers with very long cutlass bending down and sweeting in the airpot. Or is the smoke so so unreal and the red sink are illumination of light. What is really wrong with us? Why can't we tell ourselves the truth?

I remember when Bill Clinton came to Nigeria, cars, buses, beggers, main ruwa and hawkers were pushed off the street. Not for our own good. Not for our development. No. Just so that Bill Clinton and his escorts will see that Abuja is beautiful. Who are we fooling here? You people should look beyond the fact that the guy is white. He could have been a tourist or environmentalist.

It seems as if we are a little too sensitive. I know it was a "white man" that posted it but we need to relax. Yes, he's a little cheeky with the cutting the grass by hand comment, but he's just being silly. I guess it hurts when a stranger (white man) points out something negative, we seem to go into defense mode.

ut that is how parts of Lagos looks.

I did not notice any CGI (Computer Graphic, kiniko) present so Relax.

If he had said "look at these dirty pigs", then I would have found it offensive.

Lets not be in denial of how Lagos looks in some parts. Not every square inch, but that is Lagos there.

As if cutting grass by hand is not enough, have you seen those uniformed ladies sweeping the streets of Abuja by hand? Can't we do better?

It was really shameful that we were willing to hide all that rather than ATTACK the problems once and for all.
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by Epi: 9:17pm On Jan 04, 2010
I watched the video and not sure what's all the fuss about. undecided

Comment on cutting grass manually: - I am sure the Nigerian Government can borrow/have money for lawnmowers but is thinking about providing jobs for people.  we must understand that not everybody is mentally challenged to do certain work (tekkie, teaching etc.) but is perfect is certain work specialization (manual labor) And we must always remember that everytime a modern equipment go to a country the government has to pay for training and reduce overheads.  So, rather than depriving people of a job they stick to manual labor.

Heck, manual labor is still happening down south, Mexico, India, Jamaica and I can go on baby.

Comment about living conditions:- I don't know if it's true but so what if it's the truth.  Brazilians, Haitians and Indians have it worse and they are not ashamed of it - they accept it because it's the truth.
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by Mekusxyz: 9:22pm On Jan 04, 2010
If they still cut the grass by hand at the international airports in Nigeria, then it is very condemnable. Even in Douala, Cameroun Airport, they use mowers. Can anything ever work in Nigeria? +our blind patrotism and villification of anyone who says things the way they are about Nigeria is becoming sickening, really.
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by spikedcylinder: 9:23pm On Jan 04, 2010
They don't actually cut grass by hand - especially at the airport. Haba! It's not that bad.

Everybody is entitled to form their own opinion about the city of Lagos positive or negative that is personal to who-so-ever. That Lagos lacks vegetation etc is not peculiar to Lagos alone major European cities and even American cities got areas that are not much different .
Re: American Ridicules Lagos From The Air by topup: 9:42pm On Jan 04, 2010
Wow. . I can't believe the ego of some Nigerians. Stubborn to the core. I watched the video, I am a Nigerian, I grew up in Nigeria, but thankfully I was also able to experience the world outside. We are NOT the best country out there, we have our own failures, what you should expect is that you can be criticised and so you are therefore able to criticise others also.

He didn't say anything disrespectful, this is how Nigerians will be blinded by sweet words from other leaders, Americans are extremely honest and I love that about them, they say what they think and usually because of this there is a general air of ease within them.

They are the same people who repeatedly made fun of their own president.

I repeat there really wasn't anything to get defensive about in the building, he just said what he saw, and isn't it true, there isn't that much greenery in Lagos city, maybe on the outskirts, he is probably comparing this to other countries he has been able to see by bird's eye view.

Let me give you an example: Amsterdam (below 1st pic) would you not agree that this is much greener than Lagos, and so are many other countries, he didn't state this as being a bad thing, he basically said what he saw!!

Okay how about another example Barcelona also has a sandy terrain and hot climate, but look an effort to maintain the greenery.

Then see Nigeria's coastline. See how green it is. (3rd pic) then see Lagos (4th pic). I understand a lot of people here live in luxury and they may see beauty everywhere they turn, but Nigeria as a whole does not reflect this, it is a country that you will see extreme wealth next door to extreme poverty. We could be better.

Now, I don't say that we shouldn't defend against unfair justice, but w really have to accept free speech, of course it works both ways, we are free to comment if we don't like what someone says, but if we are saying that they should have no right to say such things in the first place then we are not really abiding by the whole idea.

Now go on. . attack me. smiley - I'm ready!!
