Rossikki:A debtor will remain a slave of his benefactor until he offsets the loan. It seems you have little idea of Nigeria's debt profile. Did China attain their level of development by borrowing? Sustainable development will continue to evade this country until we wake up from this slumber of being consumers of everything. You don't need any research to realize that Nigeria is being used to sustain industries in Europe and China. 10 Likes |

EzeUche:Works on the Lagos-Ibadan section of the new Lagos-Kano standard gauge railway just recently commenced; the Calabar-PH section will be commencing soon too as I think counterpart funding has recently been released for it. And then again, about a year ago, Nigeria launched the Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge railway; the rail system was extensively used during the closure of the Abuja airport 2 months ago and I'm sure anyone who pays attention should have noticed that. All these projects (including the Kenyan one) were/are financed and built by the Chinese with funding from the Chinese Exim bank. So what exactly are you blabbing about? 5 Likes |

I think the major point the OP is making is the quality of the train stations - Just like airports. Compare those with Kubwa train station. 9 Likes |

edoyad: That you are from Kaduna means nothing. The Abuja-Kaduna network is a 200 km network llnking the federal capital with the nearest large city. The Lagos-Ibadan network construction has begun, as has the 1,500 km Lagos-Calabar route. They can't build them all at once just to satisfy you that they're not being ''political'' when they're deciding on which line to build prior to the other. 3 Likes |

owbabs: If you have only two cities in your country like Kenya, you can build multimillion dollar palaces as their respective train stations. But if you are in Nigeria, which has hundreds of cities, you cannot. You need to be more modest so the infrastructure spreads round. 5 Likes |

adde: I'm not sure you know this but virtually every country has some debt. The USA presently has over $ 20 Trillion in debt, the entire economy of the US is worth around $ 17 trillion. Japan's debt to GDP ratio is also in negative. Debt is good if it's well spent. 3 Likes |

Pavore9: And the point is, IT SHOULD. Kenya has a GDP that isn't up to that of Lagos, not to mention Nigeria that has 8 or 9 times the GDP of Kenya. No matter the effort these other countries are making, our size and available resources demand that we lead them when it comes to infrastructure and funding of projects. 5 Likes |

Rossikki: Kenya has only 2 cities? Bros, don't give info that can easily be disputed! On that 472km stretch alone has 2 major Terminus (Nairobi and Mombasa, where the journey begins and end on that route), 7 intermediate stations and 23 passing stations! 11 Likes |

Some people on this forum get so pained when they hear that other African countries are making progress. Trying to talk bad or degrading a country doesn't negate the fact that it has made progress. For example, that railway will make traveling easy and will promote tourism. Those are direct benefits which will contribute to economic growth. 9 Likes |

Pavore9: Any place under 500,000 in population is a town or village in my book, not a city. Kenya has only TWO cities. Nairobi, Mombasa, finish. The rest are glorified villages. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_Kenya_by_population 3 Likes |

Iolo:Unfortunately we both know our politicians will not spend the debt well. They only want to score cheap political points. That is why Europeans are tired of lending to Nigeria. The cost of all these projects put together is enough to rejuvenate our power, steel and petroleum sectors. Of what use is it to have a hummer jeep in a riverine area? Most of the materials used to erect these structures are imported, and their cost over bloated. Eventually China will get their money back even before you start using the project. Maintenance then becomes an issue, so you still have to keep bringing in their expats. It is a vicious circle. Nigeria keeps asking for fish without having the expertise to fish. 5 Likes 1 Share |

baralatie: Why should I travel with a Kenyan passport? What use is it that if for example our GDP is 10 times of the one of another Country but those in that Country have no idea of what it is to have and run a generator at home because they have no issue with power supply? They can easily access Forex and do not know what black market rate means? They don't know what it is to regularly experience fuel crises A higher GDP that does not reflect in a better and more comfortable life that those of lower GDP, of what use is it? I don't brag about GDP, who e epp? 7 Likes 1 Share |

adde: You are right about the leadership here in Nigeria being rotten and not trustworthy to spend such loans. Another thing to note is that China has had a steel glut hence their willingness to borrow African countries money for such projects. They import the railings and everything. We just have to start from somewhere. And our leaders need to be wiser. Ensure knowledge transfer and maintenance by local hands is covered in the MOUs to start with. |

Pavore9:Indian GDP is 2.074 trillion dollars compared to 63.4 Billion dollars for kenya, that means Indian GDP is almost 50 times higher than that of Kenya, yet Kenyans enjoy better electricity than India, and some Indians prefer life in Kenya. Gabon is even doing much better as well as Mauritius. Yet the net worth of India's Bollywood alone may even outclass Gabon's GDP. 5 Likes |
