EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENTS SUCH BULLDOZER, EXCAVATOR, PAYLOADER, GRADER, ROLLER, CARRIER ETC ARE PRODUCTS OF CATERPILLAR, VOLVO, KOMASU, TEREX, JBC ETC.
THEY ARE WIDELY USED BY CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES AND PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS IN LAND PREPARATION SUCH AS BUSH CLEARING,CUTTING AND LEVELING, EXCAVATING AND OTHER PROJECTS AT AN ENORMOUS COST ASSOCIATED WITH THE INDUSTRY.
WITH MY EXPERIENCES IN THE BIZ THAT DEALS WITH EQUIPMENT RENTAL AND LEASING,IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE BUSINESS IS VERY LUCRATIVE WITH HIGH RETURNS ON INVESTMENT. FOR EXAMPLE, A GRADE "A" BULLDOZER OR EXCAVATOR CAN PAYBACK IT ORIGINAL INVESTMENT IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR OF USAGE, AND CAN STILL BE RE-SOLD AT ITS ALMOST ORIGINAL INVESTMENT COST.

INTRODUCTION: EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT

BUSINESS DESCRIPTION

Outsourcing is the key strategy in this Business where a client /company come to lease or hire your equipment/truck for a said agreed term and rate per day (8hrs) or payment per trip in term of trucking i.e. haulage of products.

Nigeria being a developing country requires massive infrastructural development in term of road, earth dam, parks, canal channelization and drain. Lagos and other state are trying to improve its capacity for service delivery to its populace, where new construction sites are springing up daily; these sites engage professional leasing company to execute the strategic plans in land preparation such as bush clearing, levelling, excavating, construction works and sand filling.

Earth moving equipments such as Bulldozer, Excavator, Pay-loader, Roller, Grader and Low-bed (carrier) are used daily at enormous cost associated with the industry for this project. Specialised company such as Julius Berger, PW, OGORMA and Hi-tech are fully engaged and overstretched interms of equipment capacity. They now also sublet contract to equipment vendor to execute on their behalf and pay upfront.

PRODUCTS /SERVICES

In this business your products and services you always sell is your integrity as a person and your equipment performance within the period of usage. The widely used brand is caterpillar because of its durability, strength and knowledgeable of the equipment by the technician.

A key parameter in this business is for your staff to be conscious of safety at all time and use the equipment for its original purpose.

Over the year private and public have engaged service of non professional to handle equipment rental without technical expert to run and maintain the business. But a technical person with fore-knowledge of the business and large data base of clients and agents can start with only one equipment and move the company to enviable position with proper accounting best management practice.

THE MARKET

The equipment leasing / rentals have annual turnover of over #4Billion in operational capacity either procurement/rentals. It’s a big market awaiting major player to step in and advantage of the incentives that come with the business. The only major players in the business are: TRI-STAR equipment rentals, Samchase equipment, PTS equipment, OGORMA and Badewa group. The market is so large that requires newcomers’ every day. A key advantage is that all these companies cannot meet the needs of all the clients.

Good equipment will achieve result in no time while boosting the image of the company. Equipments such as Bulldozer, Excavator and Pay-loader can either be indirect or direct lease to a company or place in daily rental of #75,000, #80,000 and #55,000 respectively with a projected forecast of 15/18days when starting business operation and maximum of 22/24days per month at peak period.

Our strength lies in our ability of having foreknowledge of the business, knowing the agents and cartel that control the business industry with prompt customer satisfaction, good maintenance plan in place, we will be the company sort after in our chosen field. The client engages the equipment for 8hrs/day for various contracts i.e. daily, weekly or monthly. This contract must be accompanied with a contract agreement duly signed by both parties and payment made upfront in cash or open cheque.

MARKET STRATEGY AND SALES

Market strategy adopted in this business of leasing/rental is commission base system where agents is been paid 5% commission on whatever contract signed; by doing this we will built a network of customer around us and break into the cartel that control the business with maximum patronage on booking.

Maintenance is also a key factor in equipment leasing; if your equipment has less downtime the client cartel will always recommend the equipment to other. Proper maintenance prolongs equipment life span (preventive/plan maintenance rather than breakdown); the equipment requires servicing after running 180-200 hrs of operational time.

The operator must daily greasy all moveable part of the equipment. It’s strictly recommended that after using the equipment for a period of 3year should be put on sale to cut down maintenance cost and downtime.

The staff professional conduct and safety precaution during operational hours go a long way in customer satisfaction and help to maintain good relationship.

Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 4:02pm On Nov 24, 2010
The construction business in Nigeria is a Multi billion dollar industry with hardly any year falling short of expected windfalls befalling successful contractors who bid for construction projects, the last 5 years has witnessed increasing patronage and profits for most construction companies in Nigeria.
This is especially seen with some publicly quoted companies like Julius Berger Plc, Costain West Africa Plc and G. Cappa Plc which have recorded steadily rising profits with the last two just recovering from years of consistent loses.

Many others which are not publicly quoted are rapidly expanding their operations to meet up with greater challenges such as PW ltd, Lekki Concession Company and Hitech all of which are handling major infrastructural projects like Road and Drainage reconstruction/expansion and Land reclamation (from the Lagos lagoon) projects.
Recently a number of development projects by government and private sector companies have created opportunities for construction companies to reap massive revenues.
For instance, in recent times in most states of Nigeria infrastructural projects like road reconstruction, housing projects, bridge building, construction of drainage, dams, rural electrification, city expansion and beautification projects among others have been on the increase especially in Lagos, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states where massive amounts of money running into tens of millions of dollars have been voted for capital projects.

this is an excavator for excavating and loading as well

Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 8:26am On Nov 25, 2010
the returns you get from equipment leasing or renting depends on the type of the machine you buy.

for example at worst scenario per daily work are:
N

bulldozer (D6h or r LGP) per day 70,000
Excavator (320,315,312) , 70,000
payloader (950,966 c) ,, 55,000
Grader (12c, 14b) ,, 55,000
swampbugy (320,325) ,, 250,000

all these equipments above can work throughout the year with little less turnover during raining season.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 8:29am On Nov 25, 2010
The best machines are D6h or r LGP, EXCAVATOR (320,315,312 SWAMP TRACK). Any of these you buy will make a good deal. We have a registered company but you must understand that you don't need a must registered company to start this business, all you need is good agreement by your lawyer that both of us will sign. the prices i quoted above is what obtainable in the industry meanwhile, that prices are all excluding diesel use to do the 8hrs job for the clients. check my profile, there you will see all you may like to know about the business and if you have any question at all? i'm here to explain myself on any thing you want to known.

There are other open opportunities existing in the business that you can grab. You don’t need to accumulate all the millions of naira to buy machine before you can make a great deal in the business.

All you need do is to be part of progressive motion by calling for any construction opportunity around you such as bush clearing, clearing of layout of a land, sand filling, road construction, demolition, packing and leveling, drainage construction and so on, either in your community or your company. If your family, friends, neighbor whatever needs equipment for one thing or the other, all you need do is to inform us how to go about it and you will find yourself smiling to bank for doing that.

Integrity and professionalism is our watch word and we will make you happy that you introduce us to a business that we do best. Call for enquiries before you negotiate on our behalf, that's very important.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 12:04am On Nov 30, 2010
These are the commonly use machines in Nigeria:

compactors, hydraulics excavators and shovels, wheel loaders, dozers, articulated trucks, graders, backhoe loaders, dredgers and much more. but the best ones for a starter or growing construction companies are Excavator, Bulldozer, weel loader, compactor and Grader.

The maker/manufacturers of heavy equipment are Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, Euclid, Daewoo, Terex, Volvo, and more. but the best for Nigeria market are Caterpillar and Komatsu for the singular reason that the parts and mechanics is available meanwhile you must also take into consideration the year.

Nigeria used is around 4 to 5 million naira while tokunbo is around 6 to 8 millions naira. Its also depend on who you are buying from: some people buy it directly from USA to sell while some people are agent of the seller who add their commission to make it more expensive.

Good to know. That's a lot of investment. Is that for a 950 or 966? I see some of them has either E or H at the end. Like 950E etc. Who pays for the transport from job site to site? How much is that?

Wouldn't it take a long time to get the money back?
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 7:43am On Nov 30, 2010
This is called weel loader or payloader.  Its major work is loading but somethimes it does some other work like light clearing and also pilling, pilling and leveling are not met for payloader but sometime clients require for payloader to do this because they want to minimize cost.  In this kind of situation we know what to do, this is picture of payloader and the income per day range from 50,000 to 60,000 naira with minimum turnover of 18 days in a month. Don't look for newness but the sound ones with good transmission. payloader of category "C" work best for Nigeria market meanwhile new ones are not bad but i have a reason for that with my experience on the field.

yes, its alot of investment but worth investing on. either or both are good in this environment, the difference is just the size and where you use them to work. 966 is more heavier compare to 950. both can move to site on a short distance but we use lowloader if the site is far from yard while the client bear the cost of carrier to and return back to the yard. we called that one mob and demobilization.

Wouldn't it take a long time to get the money back?

In less than a year payloader payback its original cost and can work for minimum of three to four years before resell to reduce/avoid high cost of maintainance. the income per day at minimum is N50,000 with minimum working turnover of 18 days in a month.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 5:16pm On Nov 30, 2010
Also, you can invest on low-loader. low-loader is just like trailer like truck which we use to move equipments to sites, this is very lucrative area of the business because it does not necessarily wait for only equipment to work. its can also convey other loads from one place to another just like flat body. its charges depends on distance and the maintainance is just like any other truck but with specific instruction. it does come with the bed at the back with slipper and the tonnage of the bed will determine what type of machine it can carry. the best among is minimum of 60 tonnage with 20m width.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 5:39pm On Nov 30, 2010
This is how some of the lowbed look like. there are many types you can get in the market even some are using hydrolic system to operate both the bed and slippers. but what matter most is the tonnage and head that hook the bed.

What we plan together we achieve together. i know what the market can offer but the problem is capital, God will help us.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 4:06pm On Dec 01, 2010
compactor can be two drum or one drum with two tires at the back. the tonnage is very important when buying compactor because it determine the price to hire it out. smtimes the two drums is better for road construction.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 4:09pm On Dec 01, 2010
compactor

Nice thread. Monitoring this type of business is going to be the challenge.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 5:40pm On Dec 02, 2010
@Kunle-A

Monitoring this type of business is going to be the challenge.

This is the area you are going to find interesting about the business, Monitoring is going to depends on the type of management style you are going to prefer.

there are two type of management style in the business:

1)  The owner is the boss: in this situation, owner make the final decision of where to work, how to go about the work, money to be charge for the work and when to work.  the dos and don'ts of the business lies with owner while we implements your instruction at every giving time.  The primary responsibility of us is to get good and reliable operator with experience. Also to make sure of proper maintainance of the machine with adequate safety in place. Manager collect salary with field commission as agreed upon by the both parties.

2)  The owner is an investor: here, the dos and don'ts of the operation is in charge of manager. We takecare all the conditions above while we pay agreed amount to the investor at agreed interval such daily, weekly or monthly.  Manager take home whatever left after investor interest has been taken care of.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 11:36pm On Dec 02, 2010
Challenges and threats

Corruption is still an issue in deciding government contracts as many top government functionaries try to manipulate bidding and award of contracts in their favour or that of their cronies. But that is gradually taking a back seat as most contracts these days are usually based on merit unlike in times past.

The good news is that equipment hiring does not necessarily depend on Government contract but if you have your way to their approval of contract too,you will smile for it in as much that their entitlement goes to them. One contract from Government sector can change someone history from being managing to abundant financially so if you have the source it will be an added advantage.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 11:42pm On Dec 02, 2010
You don't need to have 20 machines to get construction contract, all we need is to know who is who and package ourself professionally.

One job well executed will introduce many contract, very simple business.
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 10:35pm On Dec 05, 2010
Nigeria has large expanse of undeveloped Land requiring road construction to link many parts of the country with other parts and construction of low cost housing to accommodate many of its city dwellers.
Also that many state governments are coming to terms with the importance of sticking to Master plans and town planning laws means that in coming years many large scale construction projects will be embarked upon.
Major infrastructure like good road networks, that will support development are lacking and hence is a major cause of inadequate foreign investments.

This has prompted governments at both state and federal levels to embark on long term infrastructural projects. State and Federal governments are looking for alternative sources of revenue (non-oil based sources) like taxation which depends largely on available infrastructure.
Of recent, crude oil deposits have been found in some parts of Nigeria implying that very soon infrastructural work would begin in surrounding areas. However, this is also dependent on security as the Niger delta is highly notorious for security threats from Militants.
Telecommunications companies are always embarking on expansion or maintenance projects this affords many construction companies opportunities to maximize income. Infrastructural and Development Projects (Mega city project)
Most state governments have realized that foreign investment is only possible when an enabling environment such as one with sufficient infrastructure exists.
Of all places in Nigeria, real estate investors are taking position in prime locations like Ikeja, Lekki and Ikoyi constructing commercial and residential buildings like Luxury Apartment buildings, office buildings, Mini estates, Hotels and Event centers.
Refuse collection and disposal has always been a problem in Lagos hence the government partnering with the private sector in managing refuse collection and disposal. Even at that, Lagos is still far from having efficient refuse collection and disposal centers
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 7:09am On Dec 06, 2010
The day to day running of the business and agreement for all jobs shall be rest with the manager and he must ensure that all proceeds after which commission has been paid to the company account as agreed upon. He is also responsible for the monitoring of operational performance of the equipments and also scheduled maintenance with the report to the management.
proper maintenance prolongs the life span of any equipment. The equipment after running for maximum of 240hrs shuold be serviced(all service accessories must be changed).
Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 7:23am On Dec 06, 2010
Road construction can not be completed without finishing with Grader. Grader is a multi-duties work machine that put good leveling to surface of the land.

Re: Equipment Leasing / Renting (construction) by omolayo1(m): 12:53am On Dec 07, 2010
Lekki free trade zone project is commencing early next year. i talk about this because is a mega project that needs alots of machines to be at the site for leveling sand and excavating. also govt just gave miners licenses of recent for dredging and every dredging site needs minimum of 2 dozers and payloader on the site. those dredging companies don't buy machine, they hire from outside, thesame with most of these road construction companies around. they all hire most of the machines they are using putting their logo on it. thesame with individuals/companies that buy large piece of land for estate hire this machines for clearing.

Recently a number of development projects by government and private sector companies have created opportunities for construction companies to reap massive revenues.
all this are the foresight investors. get involve one way or the other and you will never regret that you invest your money/effort on this business
