All i know is, as far as 'come' in your local dialect is 'bia', you are an IGBO, like it or hate it. Even if your country of origin is China and your local dialect translates 'come' in English as 'bia', no matter the intonation, my brother/sister, you are an IGBO...... 1 Like |

Whether it is convenient for Ikwerre to be called Igbos or not, the facts remains that language (mother-tongue) and culture are the main factor/entity that defines a people regardless of geographical spread. Ikwerres are Igbos based on these facts. However, it is up to them(Ikwerres) to chose to be something else they want to be for whatever reasons they like, only that Language (mother-tongue) and cultural attachments are too strong to be easily swept under the carpet. When Peter Tosh sang that song 'no matter where you come from, as long as you are black man, you are African'. He was breaking even language and cultural barriers. Not sure why all these debates! |

Why do igbos claim everything on their path based on similar culture?they forget that these groups where influenced by other groups and they still retain many aspects of these groups dat influenced them. No wonder they were nearly wiped off d planet earth in d 1967-1970 civil war.In my candid opinion, this is very pathetic and is largely due to inferiority complex. |

bright007: Why do igbos claim everything on their path based on similar culture?they forget that these groups where influenced by other groups and they still retain many aspects of these groups dat influenced them. I think you seem to misunderstand this whole issue. Nobody is claiming anybody as everybody knows what is involved. I think Ibibios, Efiks, Ijaws and Ogonis also share some similarities with Igbos but there is no confusion in identifying the differences. The Ikwerre case seems to be as a result of language, culture and geography being contiguous without detectable differences with the direct "Igbo" neighbours. Eg Ohaji and Omerelu. You can't compare that with say Obigbo and Eleme/Ogoni or Onitsha Ngwa and Ikot-Ekpene/Annang. While all are contiguous geographically, there is a sharp change in language between Onitsha Ngwa and Ukanafon or between Obigbo and Eleme as they all speak unintelligible languages. |

taken from : http://wikitravel.org/en/Igbo_phrasebook Through the transatlantic slave trade, the Igbo language has influenced many creoles in the Americas, especially in the former British Caribbean including islands such as Jamaica, Barbados, Dominica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Variations of Igbo can be found in Cuba (formally), the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea, formerly known as Fernando Po, and in micro-communities in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, it is also spoken among the recent migrants of Igbo descent all over the world and in the organisations they have set up. ARE YOU SAYING THAT CUBANS, JAMICANS, DOMINICAN ETC ARE IGBO JUST BECAUSE HUNDRED OF YEARS AGO SOME IGBOS WERE CAPTURED AN INSLAVED B4 BEING SHIPPED ACROSS mini TO FORIEGN LAND ? THE ANSWER IS OBVIOSLY NO...... if there were igbos that used igbo man sence to avoid wahala back then or during biafra then so be it. |

it is unfortunate that most people dont know their identity. Any ikwerreman who tells you that he is an igbo is suffering from identity and inferiority crisis. the ikwerre people have history which can never be traced to any igbo land. we are from Benin by origin. culturallywise we are absolutely different. linguistically, there may be similarities but we speak differently. the ikwerre language as we have it today may have undergone certain metamorphoses as a result of intermarriages and trades. most non-ikwerres tend to bastardize the language inorder to be identified as part of the ethnic group. let me tell you, the igbos are trying to key into the wealth of rivers state that is why they are looking for an aspect of rivers state they can call their own. all these cultural possession syndromes are all geared towards political reasons. again, any ikwerreman who tells you that he is igbo should have an igbo lineage, his mother or grandparents can be traced to an igboland. that your grand father hails from an igbo land does not imply that all ikwerres are igbos. we have origin, we have history and have a place. we wont identify with you igbos because we are quite different. similarities in language does not make us the same the way Dutch, German and English languages may have similarities yet the owners of those languages are quite different from the other. do you know that 'man' in english language is translated as 'mann' in german language. bruder (german) with two dots on top of the 'u' is brother. Gott means God. This is just to establish some linguistic similarities. we will not stop those igbos who are looking for cultural companions, but they have lost it with the ikwerres. I believe that they will soon possess Eleme in ogoniland. Let the Ogoni people be conscious of this. they will tell you that Eleme is igbo as a way of being part of Ogoni. |

Do you know that some myopic individuals believe that if you are not hausa, yoruba or igbo you dont have a place in Nigeria? That is why they coined wazobia just to tie Nigeria within their ambits. this is an aberration. I pity such persons. they have forgotten that the British decided to divide Nigeria into regions (East, West North and MiddleBelt) just for convenience sake. They did not really know that Nigeria was a multi-ethnic country. This mentality of three major ethnic groups have eaten deep into the consciousness of some half-baked intellectually-minded citizens to the extend that they tend to forget that we have over over 250 ethnic groups and languages. Am sure you people are aware that census in this country has been politicized. Please live lets live. |

Why can't you and your family relocate to Benin?. Because xyz claims Benin Origin, now you have to do the same, what an identity fool you are. How about the Ikwerre people who trace their origin from Aro, Ngwa, Ndoki and most parts of Igboland. The jews who migrated to America, Russia, Poland, Iran etc still speak Hebrew. In your own case, tell me how many Ikwerre people who speak Bini or bear Bini names. Asx-licking monkey, do you want to tell me it was only one man who left Benin to settle in Ikwereland that resulted in his language change. Get a life and leave Igbo people a lone, big fool. You may not be Igbo but you have to respect the wishes of most Ikwerres who identify as Igbo. I hope this settles in your tiny skull, idiott. 6 Likes |

List all the aspects of Ikwerre culture which is absent in Uratta, Etche or Isu. Again what is the role of Arochukwu, Umunoha, Uratta and Ozuzu in Ikwerre history? If you don't know this then you need to visit Grandpa for some history lesson. Ask him what I wrote above. |

Baba4: My husband is proudly Ikwerre and just for the the record he, his father, his mother, his sisters and brothers are the hardest working people I know. Laziness is not a part of their vocabulary. I am also fed up of always, but always having to explain to especially the igbo, that the ikwerre is not an igbo. He has his own distinct culture. Surely they have a right to say who they are and who they are not. I agree with some of the other posters, does it really matter if the ikwerre wants to be part and parcel of another ethnic group? I would have thought that a giant such as the igbo wouldn't give a damn! Why make it a preoccupation? BABA4 A TRIBE OR ETHNIC IS NOT AN ASSOCIATION THAT ONE CAN WAKE UP ONE MORNING AND REGISTER AS A MEMBER IT IS A LINEAGE WITH BIOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL BACK UP SO YOU CAN NOT CHOSE YOUR TRIBE OR ETHNIC AS YOU DID NOT CHOSE WHO WILL BE YOUR FATHER BEFORE YOU WERE BORN |

tonychristopher:Please don't compare your Ikwere/Igbo war to us, Because it is not the same situation. Efik, Ibibio and Annang are just like Spanish, Italian and French, the are from the same language family but different. An Efik, Ibibio or Annang can understand parts of each others language, but not fully escept they have lived in the others region. Annang has 3 dialects in it language, also Ibibio has dialects example Eket/Ibeno is a dialect of Ibibio. Even though Eket language can not be fully understood by an Ibibio, they have never denied being Ibibio, they regard themselves as a subgroup of Ibibio, speak Ibibio as a second language and practice the same traditions as Ibibio. Oron regard themselves as a subgroup of Efik, they dress like and practice the same traditions as Efik, although their language can only be understood by themselves; which is why they speak Efik as a second language. They 3 main groups Annang, Efik and Ibibio ARE SEPARATE not just because of different languages but because they also practice different traditions and cultures. Re: Mixed Tribes by ibibiogrl: 1 year & 8 monthsANNANG ALSO DIFFERS THE SAMEAloy.Emeka: Like I said it's not the same as you who denied your selves just because of dialectical differences.
