benchwest: Your proposal is a brilliant modification of the stoopid scheme that our political leaders are proposing for graduates. But also, another welfare scheme may be required for the true underprivileged. Sometimes, it seems that they don't really analyze things before making decisions. |

Good idea. I'm actually impressed at the idea especially since it's Nigeria. But how about putting that money into creating actual jobs like building up infrastructures etc. I mean the country needs a face lift any way. Why not pay ppl to actually do that. Just a thought. So will this be like unemployment benefits like in the US or Food Assistance |
Re: Senate Proposes N15,000 Monthly Salaries For Unemployed Graduates, Aged by Kobojunkie: 6:31pm On Jun 04, 2010 |
Meddler:Come on now. . . you know we are still speaking here of Nigeria. Money no be the issue. these same have spent over 10 times of that amount to "build infrastructure", "create jobs for these same unemployed" . . . abegi make we consult the reality of the situation here ooo. Meddler:They knew this when they gave themselves billions in raises. They knew this when they allowed over 20 billion to disappear underground over the last 10 years. They remember this each and every time they approve yet another gosh aweful scheme to help syphon some more of the poeple's money into private pockets. Meddler:ROFLMAO!! Now you are just going too far - - - you are dreaming too big there. Be happy if we even 6 months of benefits paid out to ACTUAL Nigerians. ROFLMAO!!! |

Kobojunkie:HAHAHAHAHA!!! Thanks Kobo for smacking sense into me lol so I guess it's back to lowered expectations. I let my american thought process get the best of me lol. Yeah u're right. Dis na Nigeria. What was I thinking. Well you really dissect and analyze this proposal it sounds very unrealistic. Let's start from the very basic. Just like others have pointed out, how will they verify if you are unemployed graduate, or verify when u become employed? Oh well i'm waiting to see how this will go down. |

Am sorry if I sound pessimistic, but it WONT WORK. However, i give them kudos for even having the initiative but the funds would definitely be directed to a few selected 'pockets' and those who its really meant for, will end up not getting a dime from the scheme. Too bad for our decayed system! |

Graduate dis graduate dat. Nah only graduate no get work? There is already enough complacency in our soceity, we do not need a welfare state that will be abused by corruption and federal character. It seems these 'Sinators' only know how to spend money they have not worked for. |
Re: Senate Proposes N15,000 Monthly Salaries For Unemployed Graduates, Aged by Nobody: 10:42pm On Jun 04, 2010 |
have they got enough funds in the coffers to execute such policy, surely jobless graduate numbers would easily clock up to millions or am I wrong. not to talk of some greedy bastard who is gonna create 'ghost graduates' to embezzle gonernment funds. |

Are people really praying for this scheme Im disappointed. These senators are the biggest disappointment the senate in 1999 would have made this country a better place if they had a presidency like that of Yaradua and Jonathan as against the oversabi Obj and thieving Atiku. I have said it before we should concentrate on who we allow to represent us from our constituencies, these ones have a free hand but dont know what to use it for. |

What about the employed graduates than earn less than 8000 naira monthly. This idea sounds good but it is impossible in Nigeria. So many employed ones will come forward to participate in the scheme. That senator needs to re-think for something better |

First,It might hit the rock before it starts, please ask the dumb senators,How many Nigerians got a nationa ID card for identification?, we live in a country, where we don't even know, how many we are and they are talking of implementing such a huge project . Wait till you see govt officials form up Ghost names to collect those funds for themselves, Good implementation but bad planning, lets get a Nigerian Data center,so we know, Who's a graduate and not or else, this is just another scheme for Top govt officials to enrich their pocket. I would suggest, the senators approving a bill for Health insurance included in this, not just N15,000 for doing nothing |

we don't want any scheme. Let the fund be wired to our accounts every month. But many employed will claim unemployed. How will it work? |

This thread is getting more interesting by the minute Giving money to unemployed graduates in Nigeria will result in a lot of fresh problems arising. Suddenly, the Oluwole Forgery Syndicate will start to blossom again [ It has been curtailed a bit by the activities of the EFCC and the thorough document verification methods used by the Embassies in Nigeria ] and fraudsters will start collecting cash that they are not entitled to Innovation and industriousness will also be hampered as many Nigerian youths will just be waiting to collect their 15k at the end of the month. They might not think of using their talents and gifts to earn a living, and will be dependent on Government handouts. Nigeria is not good at record keeping and data management. Is it easy to prove that someone is unemployed in Nigeria? We don't have NI or social security numbers like the UK or the US. In the UK, it is easy to track your employment history through your NI number. The UK authorities can find out if you're unemployed through your NI number. The Nigerian Government does not have database centres where information about people can be accessed. I see a situation where well paid Nigerian graduates [ Who are obviously working ] will be claiming the 15,000 Naira benefit Some Nigerians might also become ingenious by collecting the monthly 15k under different names and in different sates. One person can be banking 150,000 Naira montly without being caught. We will also be seeing a rise in irresponsibility and careless living among Nigerian youths. Personally, I've seen some of the negative effects of the benefits system in Britain. The UK Government is hiding some statistics and information from the people. The immigrants are the ones paying 45-55% of the money given out as benefits to people through taxes and NI contributions. In Britain, some families have not worked for generations and solely survive on all forms of benefits. Cancelling the benefits system will lead to a civil war in Britain. People have become so dependent on the state that they will become vicious if their benefits are taken away. Do we want to go the same way in Nigeria? Even with the databases in Britain, people are still playing the system Nigerians are naturally enterprising by nature. Let the Government fix the problems bedevilling the nation like lack of adequate electricity and solid healthcare, the bad educational system, bad roads etc first. It is after they've done this that they can start thinking of setting up a social system. Cheers. www.amebor.com |

i Believe this will go a long way in helping our unemployed graduates solve some of their problems while still hunting for better jobs. For those of us calling on our government to invest this money in providing social amenities and creating jobs by building industries, this same government has not been able to do build industries and provied basic infrastructures despite the billions of naira we make tru export of crude oil.Paying N15k to unemployed graduates will not stop the governmnet from providing basic infrastructures like power etc. This country has the money to take care of such scheme. What would u say about the Fed Gov planning to spend N10b on the celebration of our 50th independence anniversary? What about paying repentant militants N65k? I am in total support of the scheme. |
