The Senator should have proposed a workable idea such as giving incentives to entrepreneurs and small business owners who employ a minimum of two unemployed graduates. |

Redman44: I totally disagree with this assertion.Every graduate in 9ja today wants to work where he/she can earn nothing less than N50k.If eventually this scheme is passed into law,no right thinking graduate will depend on 15k/month for a long time.It wouldnt make the unemployed to be lazy becos he believes he can get a beta job that will pay him beta.So the strugle for a beta job continues |

@Topic, This whole idea captures the thinking (or the lack thereof) of Nigerian lawmakers-simplistic, idealistic but unrealistic, foolish and ultimately dangerous. How can they begin to contemplate such a huge welfare payout without a corresponding increase in wealth generation. When you multiply that with all the problems of a mindlessly corrupt bureaucracy, inadequate and ineffective law enforcement, unreliable and corrupt statistical data etc etc most of which are yet unknown (but with us nevertheless) Nigeria will end up with an inflationary rate far worse than Zimbabwe's yet certified graduates and the genuinely aged are still not getting any money. I sorry for these legislators. We 've never had it so bad. They should realize that this is not about counting the nos of 'honorables' in the house and working out how much each will take home from a given 'action'. |

as much as i support social welfare package for less privileged, this decision by the lawmakers in the present-day nigeria is one of the most stupid i have heard them make in recent times, everything and everything is wrong about it, i dont even know where to begin analysing how wrong this decision is. |

ReachRich: why do u guys always see the negative side of things alone. yes, Nigeria is not good at record keeping. 1. you talked about the oluwole boys, but the question is, how did the boys in oluwole started and why? hardship. when u re hungry, u can think of anything. they started by thinking away out of there hunger. but when we have a system where people will no longer be hungry, they can also think of better things. 2. some people can claim even a million naira with different names, yes. but we can't avoid sleeping because we don't want to die. if you close your eyes because of one bad man, 100 good men will pass you by. some people are involve in criminal activities not because they wanted to, but because they don;t have the willpower to cope hard situations, if they have a choice, it will definitely reduce crime rate and make people think in the right direction |

@ Post When I saw this I couldn't believe it. Can such a thing happen in this country? Let's keep hoping on God. Even though the amount is rather paltry, but half a loaf is better than none. Anyway, one is policy making, another is implementation. Let's see where all this will end. |

Data collection in Nigeria is too underdeveloped to support a proposal such as this one. . . . first of all, we need to conduct a credible census, give everyone a National Insurance no, then we can start thinking of schemes like these. . . . as it is, graduates would continue to claim the N15,000 even after they have secured employment. . . trust Naija. . . |

Re: Senate Proposes N15,000 Monthly Salaries For Unemployed Graduates, Aged by Redman44(m): 3:33pm On Jun 05, 2010 |
I still maintain that we have to improve on data collection and management before launching out on a scheme like this. Nothing concrete will be achieved if we cannot work out the number of unemployed graduates and youths in Nigeria. Managing data is not a joke and it needs serious financial investment. We need to develop databases that are linked to each other in Nigeria. In a country where Government officials find it difficult to give the masses the exact figures of the amount of money being made yearly from trade and Internally Generated Revenue, I wonder why we think running the benefits system will be smooth like gravy. Too much money is being wasted [ and also stashed in secret bank accounts ] currently because of our almost non-existent data systems. For the benefits scheme to work, all the levels of Government and the Private Sector need to work hand in hand. Our universities will have to update their graduation records so that it would be easy to verify if Graduates attended a particular school. The NYSC would also have to take all their records online to authenticate Youth Service claims. We need to be very organized in Nigeria. Since the ID Cards project has failed [ ID Cards cannot effectively guarantee a person's identity by the way ], we can make use of Passports, School ID cards, Driving licences and Company ID cards for the collection of the 15,000 Naira. The painful thing is that Government Departments in Nigeria have not been taking data capture and management seriously. I wonder if the birth of children in Nigeria can be verified easily in a matter of minutes It won't take ages for the Federal Government to build databases on Nigerians for economic and social welfare purposes. With our penchant for not wanting to do things properly, the 15,000 Naira benefits system for unemployed graduates will be abused on a large scale. Without a solid verification system, a dodgy guy can claim the money in 10 States [ 150,000 Naira ] without being detected. Bring Energy and the databases on first, and other things will follow. Cheers. www.amebor.com |

Re: Senate Proposes N15,000 Monthly Salaries For Unemployed Graduates, Aged by Nobody: 4:48pm On Jun 05, 2010 |
In my opinion, its not a good idea. Its the first step to creating an entitlement mentality and dependence on welfare. Welfare has ruined so many lives, because they simply want to sit on their backsides, and rely on the check from the government. And where will the money to fund this scheme come from. Taxes. Now at the level we are now, we are meant to be paying some tax. I assume its a negligible amount because no ones complaining. But to fund this scheme, they might start taxing 30%, 40% or even 50% of your salary, just like they do in developed countries. In fact the more money you earn as a result of all your sleepless nights and hard work, the more you get taxed. Imagine earning like 300k per month, and seeing your take home pay is like 150k. And the cash is going to people who won't be interested in learning how to fish. Things like this would push the country towards a socialist system, where the producers get punished by paying heavy taxes, and the others just tax their way into your pockets. There are other ways of empowering the youth that the government can come up with. The corruption factor and entitlement mentality show that this idea isn't worth it. Ordinary NYSC, we had cases of people wanting to serve the second time, just so they could get a steady paycheck from the government, Not a good idea at all, The politicians and the corrupt dudes will chill out, and its hard working producers and entrepreneurs who will be taxed to feed some "helpless" people, who want to just get things with minimal effort. Check out the ghost worker syndrome, God help us sha. |

The age of the 'ghost graduate list' is upon us. Brand new ways of embezzling money. In a country where 95% of indegienes live in an unaddressed\unplanned area, how will they disburse such funds? Will the graduates go to their respective schools of graduation to collect? Negro Pls! ! ! |
Re: Senate Proposes N15,000 Monthly Salaries For Unemployed Graduates, Aged by Princek12(m): 5:10pm On Jun 05, 2010 |
This is a silly move by the government. How can you pay N15,000 a month to unemployed graduates when the government has no record of Nigerian citizens or graduates themselves? I bet you that there will be more ghost applicants than real ones, and the first thing the government can do is to fix the electricity problem which will invariably reduce substantially the number of unemployed graduates in the country. The second thing the government needs to do is to create a database that will house the biographical information of Nigerian citizens. The government is engaging crackpot realism; in other words, putting the cart in front of the horse. |

Wow, Nigerian politicians are geniuses in theft. They are almost perfect.Who are these students they are giving the money to? We don't even have an enforced national I'd system to verify anyone's status or citizenship rights. This is another scheme to steal money. Why not declare free quality education and make jobs available. They want to turn our graduates to government welfare dependents and money making scheme. These people amaze themselves with their wit.Too corrupt! They don't even know the actual population of students or graduates! |
