Buhari says it will be unfair to accuse Federal Government of marginalising people in terms of projects allocation when local authorities in some states are frustrating contractors.

President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a serious warning to state governments that create unnecessary impediment in the allocation of land for projects or refuse to cooperate with contractors.

The President gave the warning on Saturday, October 19, 2019 in a statement issued by his media aide, Garba Shehu.

Buhari said some local communities in some states frustrate contractors by making impossible demands for land compensations and even go as far as chasing them from sites. He said, “The idea of chasing away contractors on site or making undue demands from them by local communities or the deliberate actions of state governments to frustrate the allocation of lands for federal projects is an antithesis of the people’s welfare.

“To compound matters, contractors kept away from site often make further demands for payment whenever they return to site.” “By denying the federal government lands for projects and creating unnecessary obstacles for the execution of these projects, it may be unfair to turn around and accuse the same Federal Government of marginalising people in terms of projects allocation. “When it comes to the welfare of the people, governments at all levels should be united by the common goal of improving the well being of the people, regardless of political affiliation. “It is, therefore, impossible to spread Federal Government projects when petty demands or politics is allowed to override the higher interest of the people.”

Recall that in September, Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola alleged that some communities in the south-east demanded N100 billion compensation over the construction of Second Niger Bridge.

Meanwhile, President Buhari had directed ministers to resolve all land issues threatening projects under their supervision. He added that if the issues remain unsolved, the project be relocated to other states.

That is very wrong.Government should know that the issue of community chasing away contractors that refuse to compensate them not just started today. Its a long tradition in our society. I'm expecting the contractor's to settle the community also government should wake up to their responsibility by providing job to the youth Because if they are living fine they will not ask contractors for money .

The constitution demands compensation before land is taken ...lands are expensive in the east negotiate with the families but wanting to do it by force is never going to work

Land mass has never being an issue ...England is just like Niger + brono states but they controled half of the world

cry

This excuse sounds both stupid and lame to me. The almighty federal govt giving up an entire project without a fight even when the resisting force has not fired a single shot nor attacked anybody. Since when actually did the government become so weak? This is the same government that unleashed python dance and crocodile smile on ipob and niger delta militants.
I think there's a mischievous undertone to this, haba ......this is just too lame.

What do you mean settle community? Is the project itself not enough settlement for the community. Take for example the second Niger bridge, do you know the long term benefits the bridge will bring to communities on either side of the bridge, and the whole south east as a whole. This is the bridge south easterners had been clamouring for decades. A few greedy people will now chase contractors from site because the want to collect money.
Mind you, I am not saying those that lands directly affected by the projects should not be compensated, but giving all the communities (aka community elders and youths) along the route money for not doing any work is wrong.

That’s blackmail. The federal govt, state government and the contractors should resolve all issues related to lands etc before they commence work.

Should oil prospecting stop in the North because of Boko haram’s kidnapping and killing of NNPC staff and other security issues?

Should federal government stop funding IDPs because of the fraud perpetuated by staff, abuses, rapes, sexual harassment of vulnerable people and serious security issues posed by Boko haram and other bandits!?

Yes negotiate with families. Did the families claim they have not been compensated? I doubt the projects would have been designed, surveys carried out and contractors moved to site without settlement with the actual land owners.

Well, while it’s good Federal Government situates Projects that will benefit all, imagine that the only land you bought with your money as a future investment had been marked for project by FG, what would you do? During Jonathan regime, Hausa people benefited by giving out their land for federal projects

They don't dare make such demands during the military era. Most infrastructure decay and delay are not caused by federal government but by indigenes and their omonile

You just commented like an empty vessel you are. Most of you political jobbers living 500miles from ground zero have no idea that the second Niger bridge will transverse heavily and densely populated part of both States.
Because it is SE they should suck it up. You think you are doing them a favour.

Huh!! So if government is building the fourth mainland bridge, they should just carry dey go irrespective of who owns the lands and the properties along its parts.
Will they destroy and demolish already existing structures without compensations.??
No!!!!!.
Mind you, vehicles coming from 9 states of the deep south passes through this accursed bridge and you must pass this same bridge if you are going to this same states, so do not threatens SE. They have been surviving and will continue to survive.

I barf on people that reason the way you lots do.

Is providing infrastructures not part of living fine?
So the FG should abandon a project that will benefit millions of citizens because of some few greedy lazy asses?

How then can you just conclude that it’s the Youths that are not doing anything that wants to be compensated. The truth is, the Federal Government don’t want to compensate the land owners on the ground that it’s a public project that will benefit them.

As far as I know, this project will not even benefit the host community specially.
