That is very wrong.Government should know that the issue of community chasing away contractors that refuse to compensate them not just started today. Its a long tradition in our society. I'm expecting the contractor's to settle the community also government should wake up to their responsibility by providing job to the youth Because if they are living fine they will not ask contractors for money .

We don't ve such negative tradition in the North or South West.

Why is it not happening in other parts of the Country? I've never heard about Hausa or Yorubas frustrating projects

Why won't FG compensate the land owners afterall the so called 2nd niger bridge will be tolled when completed and the money paid into government coffers. So it's either they pay for the land or they forget about the project entirely. QED

Well, while it’s good Federal Government situates Projects that will benefit all, imagine that the only land you bought with your money as a future investment had been marked for project by FG, what would you do? During Jonathan regime, Hausa people benefited by giving out their land for federal projects

Go and check very well... Government/contractors always compensate owners of lands that are affected by projects... But this one is an outrageous demand of N50m each from about 10 communities located around the project area, not necessarily even affected by the project. The idea of give us jobs before executing projects is also archaic.

What does your mean community are land owners? Will the bridge cover the whole community? So you give every elder, youth cat and dog money, because a few dozen hectares would be needed for road passing through the community.

I didn't imply that. Read what I responded to please. Let the government just compensate the the affected landowners for taking away their source of livelihood.

All land belongs to the government. That’s why you pay tenement. You’re only leasing it.

Buhari says it will be unfair to accuse Federal Government of marginalising people in terms of projects allocation when local authorities in some states are frustrating contractors.

President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a serious warning to state governments that create unnecessary impediment in the allocation of land for projects or refuse to cooperate with contractors.

The President gave the warning on Saturday, October 19, 2019 in a statement issued by his media aide, Garba Shehu.

Buhari said some local communities in some states frustrate contractors by making impossible demands for land compensations and even go as far as chasing them from sites. He said, “The idea of chasing away contractors on site or making undue demands from them by local communities or the deliberate actions of state governments to frustrate the allocation of lands for federal projects is an antithesis of the people’s welfare.

“To compound matters, contractors kept away from site often make further demands for payment whenever they return to site.” “By denying the federal government lands for projects and creating unnecessary obstacles for the execution of these projects, it may be unfair to turn around and accuse the same Federal Government of marginalising people in terms of projects allocation. “When it comes to the welfare of the people, governments at all levels should be united by the common goal of improving the well being of the people, regardless of political affiliation. “It is, therefore, impossible to spread Federal Government projects when petty demands or politics is allowed to override the higher interest of the people.”

Recall that in September, Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola alleged that some communities in the south-east demanded N100 billion compensation over the construction of Second Niger Bridge.

Meanwhile, President Buhari had directed ministers to resolve all land issues threatening projects under their supervision. He added that if the issues remain unsolved, the project be relocated to other states.

community elders in South east and south south are just like agbero in South west. They are lazy, greedy and alcoholics. They display their greedines in every possible way-burial,marriage and projects. They would collect money from anybody that wants to do anything in community and use the money to drink alcohol. nonsense

u don't justify nonsense on the alter of " it's a long tradition in our society ". When u become too hostile towards the contractor, the government is left without no other option than redirect their developmental efforts else where

Contractors are not the ones to pay compensation they are there to do a job, they have an agreement with the government, not the communities. If there is compensation to be paid that will be the federal government.

The kind of hatreds in this nairaland eeh? Just because they think this might be because of 2nd Niger bridge, U see all children of haters coming out to pour out their support for anything they think will hurt Igbos. So sorry for all of you. Is there no one here who will say it's not in the constitution that Govt should compensate land owners before taking up their lands for govt project? You people's brother Sowore is in jail rotting away. Fear could not allow any Yoruba man to go and bail him. If 2nd Niger bridge is stopped today, it doesn't and will never affect Igbos and their lives and businesses in any way. So these children that are here rejoicing better go and work, make money and live a good life.

You just commented like an empty vessel you are. Most of you political jobbers living 500miles from ground zero have no idea that the second Niger bridge will transverse heavily and densely populated part of both States.
Because it is SE they should suck it up. You think you are doing them a favour.

Huh!! So if government is building the fourth mainland bridge, they should just carry dey go irrespective of who owns the lands and the properties along its parts.
Will they destroy and demolish already existing structures without compensations.??
No!!!!!.
Mind you, vehicles coming from 9 states of the deep south passes through this accursed bridge and you must pass this same bridge if you are going to this same states, so do not threatens SE. They have been surviving and will continue to survive.

I barf on people that reason the way you lots do.
But I dont understand the land owners compensation narrative most of you are complaining here. Did the land owners said they were not compensated? There was a press release by the communities affected and the thread was here on nairaland. No issue of land compensation was mentioned in that statement. The issues were about minor contracts like sand supply and locals employment. This statement by FG is not just not about SE but everywhere and is not just about land compensation but other "undue demands" whatever that means.

This has nothing to do with compensation. Compensation for land is paid before any project kicks off.

This is about rent seeking. Settle us before we allow you to work

The highest form of madness given that these jokers are already benefiting. Any major project in your area means people with cash to spend. On beer, foods, olosho , etc.

They communities are already experiencing a massive cash influx, which is what happens with projects anywhere

It is very surprising that the same people who brag about igbos being independent supermen, the master tribe as I used to sarcastically say in the past, are joining the wretched masses of Omo oniles in thuggish begging.

So because it didn't start today we should allow it to continue?
Buhari's government might be clueless but this is the best move.
If you don't need any project in your place others will collect it.

Nice move.
