She Wants Her Name To Be Uppercase During An 'informal' Chat! by bentenny(m): 8:11am On Oct 26, 2019
Was having a very lovely conversation with a female friend on a social media platform...and during the conversation, I addressed her with lowercase letters ie 'amanda' but she said I should address her as 'Amanda'

I enquired about the reasoning behind such and wondered why she was insistent on the first letter of her name being an uppercase letter...I also reminded her that it was an informal chat that should not necessarily involve any formality on our part....

But she kept insisting on it....so I just placed all to full uppercase letters AMANDA

For me,I think its too petty and childish....and besides, being addressed with an 'amanda' does not in anyway take way one's relevance and respect!

Just wanted to share this and seek differing opinions(with reasons not advise ohh) from others on this platform...Thanks! grin grin

It's wrong to write a person's name in lower case, I don't see anything wrong in her correcting you. If only people could compose chats the way they compose application letters, we won't be seeing all sorts of headache inducing grammar all over the social media.

I never called her names....its a friendly conversation and not a job interview!
Secondly, you haven't told me the reason why its wrong to be addressed that way in a personal chat with a 'friend' in a social media platform!
We were having a great chat until then....Life would be a lot better if most of you don't take things too personal!

Bros can you show me where I obeyed her?
She said she wanted one uppercase on her first name and I gave her all in uppercase letters!
If you can't see the humor behind that, then too bad for you!

Respect?
how does using a lowercase to the first letter of one's name imply disrespect esp if the person is a friend!

I would understand if such person was having a formal chat with me but not an informal chat....
The usage of lowercase doesn't in any way reduce one's respect for the person just that same way an uppercase does not increase one's respect for the personality!
There is a formal and informal conversation....know the difference!

You use lower case when you want to address things, inanimate objects or even animals but not human.

Same way some people have goosebump when they see oddnumbers, cockroaches, snakes or cobwebs, is the same way she might react when she sees the first letter of her name in lowercase.

Im sure you wouldnt like someone to do something that you dont like so take correction and dont complicate life any further.

LOL. I want to be her friend. smiley

I always use uppercase for the first letter of people's name when chatting on Whatsapp, regular text or anywhere else. It shows you respect them.

Okay different strokes for different folks!
However,I would like to know why its wrong to be addressed with names in lowercase in an 'informal' conversation....

Firstly,she is a friend!
Secondly,its an 'informal' chat!

Knowing the difference between informal or formal conversations or chat is imperative!

If I want to apply for a job,I will write a 'formal' letter and address as such but not in an informal conversation!

You do not use 'don't' in a formal conversation but 'do not'!

To be honest,if I were to take things personal like she does, then the 'nope' or 'k' or 'yh' would have been a turn off for me!
But I realized that there is peace of mind wen one doesn't take things personal!
being addressed with uppercase or lowercase doesn't take away your respect or increase it!
Una too dey take things too personal jare!

She does not know where her problem is coming from in her life, that is why she can be insisting on something so irrelevant.

Correcting you is one thing, insisting on it is mental.

Lol as far as the person gets offended, you should oblige them because you are spelling it wrong in the first place. A persons name is a proper noun so it needs to be capitalised

Like some people get offended when you write "Igbo" as "Ibo", and some people dont. But if someone gets annoyed then you have to oblige them because "Ibo" is a wrong/colonial spelling

....am only trying to point out to you the irrelevance of taking things too personal!
Seriously, most of you ladies are making issues out of nothing!
Its meant to be informal....

What is informal...

having a relaxed, friendly, or unofficial style, manner, or nature.

casual, relaxed, easy-going, natural, unceremonious, unofficial, non-formal, unstudied, unaffected, open, friendly, intimate, simple, unpretentious, easy, unstuffy, unbuttoned, chummy, pally, matey

denoting the grammatical structures, vocabulary, and idiom suitable to everyday language and conversation rather than to official or formal contexts.

synonyms: colloquial, vernacular, idiomatic, demotic, non-standard, popular, dialectal, non-literary, simple, natural, familiar, everyday, unofficial, unpretentious, slangy, chatty, folksy

Most people I chat w| on Whatsapp always capitalise the first letter of my name [moniker or actual], so this has never been an issue for me.

If it's my moniker being written I wouldn't mind that much. As you can see the "t" in the "the" isn't capitalised. I wrote it that way for a reason.

Now if it's my actual name I could let it slide a few times b|c mistakes do happen. If it's a regular occurrence, then I would most definitely correct them b|c it would look like I'm chatting with a 3-year old. It's clearly a habit for you to not capitalise the first letter of her name and it bothers her / has always bothered her, which is why she's telling you now.

You keep saying it's an "informal chat/convo". Just b|c it's informal doesn't mean you throw etiquette out the window.

You are getting it so wrong.....when it comes to informal conversations, everything goes.....hence,i dont think a lowercase or uppercase should suggest an offence or being belittled!
Its all about your perception of the personality!
Its your constant communication with such person that will make you conclude if this person is disrespectful and not because your name was uppercase or lowercase!
Like i said, she is taking things personal and being petty!

midnighter:

Names or countries are addressed in uppercase format to indicate some form of formality considering the platform!
This is not the case when you are having an informal or casual interaction with your peers where even Nigeria is shortened for 'naija'
So why should i get offended if someone tags Port-Harcourt as PHcity....?
So why should one be offended if Igbo is referred to as Ibo?
Does that in any way take away the respect or relevance of a tribe or LGA?

Well,different folks for different folks!
