Most people I chat w| on Whatsapp
always capitalise the first letter of my name [moniker or actual], so this has never been an issue for me.

If it's my moniker being written I wouldn't mind that much. As you can see the "t" in the "the" isn't capitalised. I wrote it that way for a reason.

Now if it's my actual name I could let it slide a few times b|c mistakes do happen. If it's a regular occurrence, then I would most definitely correct them b|c it would look like I'm chatting with a 3-year old. It's clearly a habit for you to not capitalise the first letter of her name and it bothers her / has always bothered her, which is why she's telling you now.

You keep saying it's an "informal chat/convo". Just b|c it's informal doesn't mean you throw etiquette out the window.
I either use lowercase or uppercase letters when addressing my 'friends' on a social media platform and they dont have a problem with that....i also dont feel any form of disrespect or irrelevance if am addressed that way know.....its just a casual conversation!

whether my moniker or actual name is lowercase or uppercase is not important to me as long as the content of our chats are causal without any form of disrespect!

Unless you are referring to those who engage in informal chats as childish like you are unfortunately concluding!

Finally, your last point using etiquette is just preposterous and laughable!
well....thats your opinion!

You are getting it so wrong.....when it comes to informal conversations, everything goes.....hence,i dont think a lowercase or uppercase should suggest an offence or being belittled!
Its all about your perception of the personality!
Its your constant communication with such person that will make you conclude if this person is disrespectful and not because your name was uppercase or lowercase!
Like i said, she is taking things personal and being petty!

Names or countries are addressed in uppercase format to indicate some form of formality considering the platform!
This is not the case when you are having an informal or casual interaction with your peers where even Nigeria is shortened for 'naija'
So why should i get offended if someone tags Port-Harcourt as PHcity....?
So why should one be offended if Igbo is referred to as Ibo?
Does that in any way take away the respect or relevance of a tribe or LGA?

Well,different folks for different folks!

Nah..you are wrong. Its an informal conversation, yes. But if the person specifies that they would like to retain that aspect of formality then you have to oblige in order to respect the other person's sensibilities

The fact that you are belittling the person's request just because you yourself dont think it is important actually shows your own disrespect for your friend. A casual conversation isnt just about so-called "informality" but also respecting other people's boundaries so that everybody will be comfortable. You dont think it matters, therefore every other person on the planet shouldnt think so either? Thats arrogance my friend

At the bolded, you are just making the same mistake all over again. when spelling "Igbo", people let it slide if you spell it as "Ibo" because of our colonial history. However if somebody corrects you on it then its disrespectful to continue spelling somebodys name wrongly just because you cant be bothered.

If you cant spell somebodys name the way they like it, then dont bother writing it in the first place!

This isnt really about spelling but about respect. Just like some people can jokingly tell somebody "Ode!" or "you are talking nonsense!" It may sound like a joke to them but others get very upset about it.

You are not just having a conversation with yourself. You are having a conversation with another person and their own personality, emotions, mentality, upbringing, values, personal history, religion, and quirks.

If you go about using your own understanding of the world to judge others and tell them how they should feel about things then you shouldnt be surprised when you dont have any friends left at all!

You're obviously stubborn and don't like taking to correction. Why did you create a thread if you don't want people disagreeing with you?

Yeah!
I do respect your reservations which i find shocking though interesting!
But that doesnt make you opinion right!
Just because that's your opinion doesn't mean its a fact or that i am stubborn like you are wrongly assuming!
If that is your mentality, then you have met a serious brick-wall!
Lastly,i created this thread to sample opinions which so far i have acknowledged and even said 'different strokes for different folks'....so where have i faulted?
Before i asked,i had also gotten matured opinions from differing social media platforms...unfortunately,most people on this platform are too formal and like taking things too personal!

Too bad sad sad

Well... it's the normal thing to do. Informal or formal, I start a name with uppercase. But I can see that it is actually an issue for some people.

Once a person picks that as an issue,i simply lose taste in the chats because it would be hard to form an interesting chat without being hampered by needless and unwanted issues!
Only God knows the next thing the person would not want!
Unless i have disrespected the person with the content of my chats then i would see it as disrespectful but but saying i must use an uppercase to chat with a friend is just too petty!
Thats my opinion!

I never said i turned down the person's request....i didnt even tell the person!

Igbo was also referred to as ibo!
Nigeria is used during a formal function while naija is used during an informal conversation!
If you dont like such, then someone else does! Its not all about you and your perceptions!

Paragraph 1: If you could lose interest in a chat because of something so insignificant then it means that you were never really interested in the chat in the first place.

You were just looking for a way to end the chat. Youre the one who is coming across as "petty" for making such a big deal out of a simple request.

Paragraph 2: You need to get a dictionary and check what the word "belittle" means.

I dont understand it, everyone on this forum rushes to tell other people to "read carefully" but they never bother to read the comment of the person they are quoting. When did I say you turned her request down? You're just saying something else without reading what I wrote.

Paragraph 3: You need to understand the difference between "informality" and "disrespect" I have already explained that theres no similarity between Nigeria/naija and Igbo/Ibo so why are you repeating yourself I didnt tell you whether I myself liked it, I was using an example

Paragraph 4: You are mocking someones request by exaggerating, which doesnt make any sense. How can you say someone is exaggerating by exaggerating even further?

Paragraph 5: Not everyone is like me, but not everybody is like you either. Thats my point.

Im beginning to pity the girl you were talking to in this Monumental Chat you were having because trying to reason something with you is insufferable... you dont pay attention to what somebody is telling you at all!

I was!
But once chats become formal...it would only be respectful to accord that person its place by exiting such chats!
Informal chats are meant to be full of fun and expression...not mechanical or strict!

midnighter:

You were just looking for a way to end the chat. Youre the one who is coming across as "petty" for making such a big deal out of a simple request.

Your very words not mine!
Or were you the one i was chatting with?

Go back and read what you said...you speculated that i didnt respect her pleas or made her uncomfortable during the chats hence i appeared as 'arrogant'
This is what happens when you dont really understand your own sentences!
Sorry no pun intended!

midnighter:

Paragraph 4: You are mocking someones request by exaggerating, which doesnt make any sense. How can you say someone is exaggerating by exaggerating even further?

Mocking? Far from that!
Am even being lenient! cool
Am not trying to exaggerate!
The point is that i give 'huge respect' to those who demand it!

Paragraph 5: Not everyone is like me, but not everybody is like you either. Thats my point.

Learn from your very words and stop making haphazard assumptions that have zero bearing!
Unlike you,the lady in question admitted she made a big deal out of that needless and unnecessary issue and we are good!

Was having a very lovely conversation with a female friend on a social media platform...and during the conversation, I addressed her with lowercase letters ie 'amanda' but she said I should address her as 'Amanda'

I enquired about the reasoning behind such and wondered why she was insistent on the first letter of her name being an uppercase letter...I also reminded her that it was an informal chat that should not necessarily involve any formality on our part....

But she kept insisting on it....so I just placed all to full uppercase letters AMANDA

For me,I think its too petty and childish....and besides, being addressed with an 'amanda' does not in anyway take way one's relevance and respect!

Just wanted to share this and seek differing opinions from others on this platform...Thanks!
