South Africa is a first world country with its major cities surrounded by third world semi developed townships

The rest of Africa excluding the Magreb does not have the same set up including Zimbabwe and Botswana

is this really your criteria for defining an African country? 
So if Ghana's economy improves dramatically tomorrow, Ghanaians will cease to be Africans in your mind?


and since when did SA become a first world country? it's a middle income country at most comparable to maybe cuba or brazil.

In terms of infrastructure and economic power, South Africa leads, followed by Tunisia.
Nigeria is somewhere there in the top 10. Our economy is large, but we have poor infrastructure. Same goes for Egypt.
Ghana is not ahead of Nigeria for now, but may be in the short term.

Maybe you never consider some small and unpopular countries like mauritius, cape verde and sychelles.
According to good governance index mauritius is the 20th best governed state in the world, above many europian state.

Botswana is the best.
