The below shows the statistics of the number of slaves that were taken from the bight of Benin (majorly Yorubas) 1,488,000, and bight of Biafra (majorly Igbos) 1,058,000 during the Atlantic slave trade. 6 Likes 1 Share

MetaPhysical:Hausa have been living in Ghana and Sudan since 1820s and are are currently citizens of both countries, there are about 2 million Hausas in Sudan. As for Saudi 80% of black Saudi are descended of Hausa, who were there since the time of Ottoman empire and most still speak Hausa fluently. As for Cameron, northern part of Cameron use to be a province under sokoto caliphate, i believe you are familiar with Adamawa emirate, which a huge part in now in Cameron so yes we have Hausa speakers in Cameron.Northern part of Burkina Faso was also under Sokoto.Eritrea Hausa community is as a result of trans-sahara trade,Hausa people have been there for centuries and like the community in Saudi, managed to keep their language and culture alive. So before you disprove anything, make sure you at list back your argument with facts. 1 Like |

DuwaRepublic: There is this false assumption about Yoruba slaves being the majority sold at the Bight of Benin. There were way more tribes being sold at the Bight of Benin (Yoruba, Fon, Ewe, etc) vs the Bight of Biafra (Igbo, Ibibio/Efik mostly). From the start of the slave trade up until the late 1700s/early 1800s, Yoruba slaves were actually a minority/sold in fewer numbers compared to other tribes from the Bight of Benin. Pazienza already showed you some numbers breaking down Bight of Benin ethnicities sold and you would confirm that Yoruba slave numbers were insignificant (2% - 10%) in the Bight of Benin slave trade, even dropping to as low as 2% in 1710, from 1640 to 1740 then we begin to see slight increases from 16% in the 1750s to 53% in 1820s, to as high as 85% in the 1830s (once again during the period of Oyo-Dahomean wars) and dropping to 79% between 1840s and 1860s. The Aja peoples overwhelmingly dominated the Bight of Benin slave trade from as high as 97% in the 1680s up until 1800s (49%) and were at par with Yoruba slaves at 36% in the 1810s. Be aware that the only period Yoruba slaves dominated the Bight of Benin slave trade is between 1820 to 1860 (62.5% average, last image attached) during the fall of the Oyo empire and the Oyo-Dahomean wars. Realistic slave figure exports from SW Nigeria: 437,700 (a small percentage never made it out of Africa, but were shipped to Sierra Leone etc) Eastern Nigeria (Ibibio, Igbo): 1.4m. The late arrival of Yoruba slaves into slavery explains why the culture survived the most, because as of the mid 1800s, the abolishment of slavery was en force, slavery was fast fading out, newly-arriving slaves had way more freedom (freedom of speech, language, religion etc) vs other slaves who arrived just 50 years earlier, and were better able to preserve their language and religion. In fact Yoruba language was a living language in South America up until the early 1900s (the pertinent question we need ask is, why did Yoruba language fail to survive as a living language [not as a liturgical language only used during Ifa rites, similar to the dead Latin language often used in the Catholic Church during mass] given the more favorable circumstances its speakers lived in after they arrived?). Ifa survival and popularity in Latin America are not really because of huge slave numbers, but due to favorable circumstances coinciding with their introduction. 8 Likes 1 Share

Michael004: The country recognizes Igbo as one of their languages. According to the 1994 census of EG (I know Wikipedia should not be used here, I also provided you a snapshot of the webpage where this data was pulled from), you could see that the Igbo were the 3rd largest group in EG. In Igboland, EG is called 'panya' and in the 20th century, thousands of Igbos relocated to EG in search of economic opportunities (similar to the Yoruba group that left Nigeria to settle in Togo many decades before) and they have long naturalized there. 6 Likes 1 Share

MetaPhysical: There's a difference between Official and Regional languages. French, Spanish and Portuguese ARE THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGES of EG, while Igbo is recognized as a regional language (the same status as other indigenous/native languages of EG ie Fang, Bubi etc). No other native language in EG is officially recognized. All native languages (including Igbo) are regionally recognized based on their area of dominance. 6 Likes 1 Share |

bigfrancis21: Yoruba did not only conquer states in West Africa and took slaves, even in diaspora we conquered other Africans and imposed our culture and thoughts and religion as the dominant way of life for the slaves. Do you deny this? Igbo was not dominant in Jamaica or Haiti. You had zero influence anywhere as a slave. There are written records and facts on this not just by historians but even descendants of plantation owners who submitted records left to them in family heirloom. 7 Likes 1 Share |

pazienza: In etymology, Barbados is closer to Barba than it is to anything in Igbo. Just because they say it is attribute of Igbo does not mean it is indded such. Like I said, where vacuum exists, you people use noise to establish footprints and claim what no one else care to put their name and stamp of authority on. I guarantee you if Barba people get on social media and position their culture as the origin of the name in Barbados they will stamp authority on the claim. Noise is not fact! 7 Likes |

MetaPhysical: Igbo influence lingers in more subtle ways, especially linguistically, down to the Pidgin English (imported from the Caribbean) that we speak in Nigeria! Una (from Igbo 'unu'), 'dey' (from Igbo 'di' i.e Chi di/God dey), tee (from Igbo 'tee' ie o teela/e don tee) etc all come from Igbo language. The Jamaicans still say 'unu', not even 'una'! Igbo 'unu (una, wuna, uno, unnu, wunu) is used virtually across all English-based patois in the whole world, from Nigerian PE, Sierra Leone PE, Ghanaian PE, in Belize patois, Jamaica, Guyana etc. You name it. An Island here in the US is called 'Ebos landing' and up until the 1980s, some African Americans still bore 'Ebo' as their surname! Due to the high concentration of Igbo slaves in the state of Virginia, US, VA was nickamed, 'new eboeland' and in this regard did the state, not Igbos, decide to build an Igbo village in Staunton VA in recognition of the past heavy Igbo presence. Yoruba Ifa which originally was practiced by Yoruba slaves was embraced by descendants from other tribes (even till this day) as a way of connecting to Mama Africa/their African heritage and has transformed into a religion for afro-descended blacks but it does not mean that all adherents are Yorubas or have Yoruba ancestry. A substantial number aren't Yorubas by blood and their DNA admixture test will prove this. Brazilian and Cuban blacks are a good mix of Congolese, Angolese and European genes. Some Igbo as well. Roman Catholicism originated from Rome and spread worldwide to have hundreds of millions of adherents. A good number of Igbos today are Roman Catholics but they are not Romans. Also, in Judaism, you could be a Jew either by religious conversion or by having Jewish (esp maternal) ancestry. However, only those of true Jewish genetic ancestry are regarded as Jews. When many afro-descendants start to investigate into their African ancestry, they often encounter Yoruba Ifa first but I've seen many of them join and leave the religion, especially after DNA testing indicates non-Yoruba origins. I belong to several Afro-descended DNA testing groups on Facebook and an overwhelming number of results come up with Igbo DNA (some as high as 70% Igbo) and Yoruba comes up once in a while (again, confirming the number breakdown posted previously). Do not confuse all Ifa adherents in Brazil and Cuba as Yorubas, because, genetically, they are not. A good number have Congolese and Angolan DNA in them. It is very easy to make emotional-based claims but DNA testing results have consistently shown a different story. In SW Nigeria today, due to the high rate of inter-tribal marriages, a substantial number of Yorubas have 50% Igbo blood to as high as 75% or 80% Igbo blood (those with Igbo mothers and Igbo paternal grandparents), despite being 'Yoruba by name'. Yoruba by name, Igbo by DNA. 9 Likes
