I'm still an undergraduate who's willing to build my self career wise while still in school. I can't combine CIPM with my school courses so I decided to wait till after my first degree by GOD's grace.
Why I'm posting now is that: If there is any short certificate courses I can apply for probably during semester breaks I can acquire? Either locally or internationally? Or its just CIPM in the Nigerian context?

For those of you seeking to build your career in HR. I would recommend firstly you take on a professional program in HR.

I would recommend Cornell University's online program called eCornell which offers international certification programs in HR. Its called the Certification in Strategic HR Management. www.ecornell.com

Cornell University is an Ivy League University in NY and programs are 100% online and are recognized here in Nigeria.

Secondly, i would suggest you find a mentor. Someone that will guide you and help fast track your HR career through advise, support and help develop your HR leadership skills.

You can pursue a career in HR, why not?
Get your CIPM as that will greatly improve your chances.

Note that having CIPM is not a guarantee you will get a job in HR.
You still need to scale through the various recruitment processes.

Hello,

I am in urgent need of a HR mentor, I worked for 3 months as HR assistant for a young and fast growing company with a staff strength of 60 and went for my MSc in HRM. I am back now to the same company as HR officer and report directly to the MD. I would really appreciate someone with vast knowledge in HR to put me through as I am required to come up with HR policies and procedures , a defined career progression path etc. Please email realgirltech@yahoo.co.uk, I would be extremely grateful.

Register with CIPM.
Your state co-ordinator of CIPM will be able to hook you up with an experienced HR professional.

Get your CIPM and you are good to go.
Note that you still have to scale through recruitment hurdles, CIPM is no automatic guarantee, it helps a lot though.

What do HR personnel look out for most when hiring?

What do HR personnel do with Ogas candidates amongst other candidates?

1. What they look out for varies.
What one organization is looking for is different from what the next is looking out for.

For example, there are people who may not do so well in an interview.
However, you may hire them on the basis of their determination,, willingness to learn etc.

Answering the interview questions perfectly may not get you into the organization if some traits like, "i know it all" is detected.

A front desk applicant can easily get the job if she/he is attractive, speaks very well and is well dressed even if she/he doesn't exactly answer the interview questions properly.

2. As for ogas candidate, it still depends on what position the oga holds in the organization.
The CEO/MD's candidate will get in, except you are tired of your job.

However, you can tell oga that his candidate is not suitable for the position and suggest other positions where he/she will be best suited. At the end of the day, ogas decision will prevail.

There are some organizations where oga cannot get a candidate into the organization if the candidate doesn't do well.
Oga will be given some slots and his candidates must clearly scale the recruitment hurdles or he/she ain't getting in. These are usually big organizations with a board etc.
