While it's easy to blame the government and pity for the 'common man' but who fills up the water drainages with filth?Who makes up shafts, stalls on top the drainages?

The government ha alot of work to do,likewise the masses.

Please, if you have not already done it, take a trip to developed countries outside of Africa -- heck America. People, even there do litter the grounds, and drainages do get blocked from time to time especially in populated cities. Try going especially to the ghetto areas on a Friday or Sunday. You will almost think some of these places ought to have be Ajegunle annex by now, but they never do become that, why? Because The Government knows it is ITS DUTY to make sure the sewers, the streets, and drainage is cleared especially when the rains are coming. This is not done because it is some 'fancy' developed thing to do, but because it is the COMMON SENSE thing to do especially considering the cost of handling a flood situation instead.

Stop! Yes it is easy to blame the government, but YES, the Government ought to take the blame because it is ALREADY BEING PAID to do this job. You do not pay someone to do a job and then come back to do that job yourself, do you? The Government already gets paid taxes, billions in taxes for even this. It is time people start demanding returns on their taxes, rather than cooking up the most ridiculous of excuses for their government.

Tomorrow, the Government road team is coming out to sweep out streets --- they do this here at least once a month when the rainy season is here to ensure the gutters and drains are kept free of debris that could potentially block them. Ask your government why e dey pay people millions each month to clean Lagos but Lagos remains as clogged as it is, even after 12 years of this so called exercise. Something is not happening, and the ONLY WAY to make it start happening, is if Government gets to work.

This disaster is going to cost this state Billions of dollars -- money that could have been used to fix the problem in the first place and spared the state from all this heart ache and loss. The state looses billions each year to these AVOIDABLE disasters. People, once again, have to spend money fixing up their houses for yet another year, probably only for the same to occur again next year, and the year after  .  . . .  There is absolutely no one else to blame but the state.

This is Houston in the in the USA. The whole city was buried under water, even their bridges and freeways got submerged.

So what do you think happened, their leaders are stealing money like Tinubu?

Their leaders are ?

The folks in Houston blocked the drainage system?

The City is not enforcing it's drainage laws

This is Missouri. Even with the US Army Corps of Engineers intervention and sand bagging, they still got flooded

These are first class cities with developed infrastructures an d they still got flooded.

Why is Lagos so special? Are we not talking about the same rainfall that flooded these cities and clowned their so called superior drainage systems?

Yes, it's always good to have good drainage systems which I believe these cities have, but your drainage system can not overpower nature.

You people should have ur facts b4 posting or supporting whatever trash the government says at most times.

Nigerians have hardly enjoyed any 'real' dividend of Democracy or let me say any real dividend from their Natural resources or from the government. I say it Boldly that apart from the Likes of papa Jakande and partially Fashola all the past rulers of Lagos state are thieves and criminals including Oyinlola, Marwa, Tinubu etc

The problem has always been with us but if any of the past government in Lagos had tried to emulate/did half of what fashola is trying to do now, Lagos would have become a 'real' MEGA city and the drainage challenges would have been reduced to its barest minimum.

Yes its true that many 'Nigerians' block drainages with refuse. In fact i witnessed one my self, BUT to be realistic, that is just about 20-30% of the problems. The drainage system in Lagos was poorly constructed and needs to be reconstructed and PROPERLY channeled. Most of it were constructed way back b4 the population grew to about 18million. Now its needs to be reconstructed and properly channeled. In VI for instance there are drainages but no place for the water to be channeled to whenever it rains. This i witnessed on Sunday in popular areas such as Adeola odeku, Silver bird galleria side up to mint, federal palace hotel and NTA all in ahmadu bello way, to where we have Eko hotel at Adetokunbo Ademola street. This things cant be done by the citizens except by the government.

I am in the building and construction industry here in Lagos, what ever i post is a fact and not some meaningless and senseless conjectures to aimlessly defend/rebuke the government

All the pictures you posted can be classed as natural disasters as you will notice the water rose higher than the river banks but with Lagos situation it is still above the ocean level or are you saying the water is above the ocean level?

So lagos problem is a man made problem simply because the drainage system is either non existent or outdated?

What about the factor of lagos receiving more inches of rain than the norm? Ain't you going to classify that being an anomaly a natural disaster as well?

More ought to be done by the Government but every lagos resident does have the responsibility to help make the state better as well.
Fashola ain't no super hero and lagos being over-populated will need years of pain before it gets any better assuming they continue with the current reform trend

But most parts of Lagos are less than 5 metres above sea level with some even below the sea level. Did you consider this?

Take time to read the post you just responded to there.

a) Lagos is NOT below sea level  . . . much of Lagos is actually about 5 meters(not feet) above sea level. Please get your information right. Note that that number was higher just some decades ago, Lagos is still no where below sea level.

Re: Heavy Rain Floods Parts Of Lagos by ochiaha1(m): 10:23am On Jul 13, 2011
The rains of last weekend confirmed a lot of things:

1. Lagos is below Sea-level as has always been taught right from my Primary school days.

2. Weather changes history (Courtsey of Discovery World, Sateliate TV Station). The lives of people who lost their loved ones to the drowning floods can never be the same again.

3. The need to think out-of-the box, to finally confront the problem of  the perennial flooding of Lagos during the rainy season. Osaka, a city in Japan, which like Lagos lies below the sea level, had to build a mighty underground tunnel to which flood waters are piped, whenever it rains for onward pumping to the sea by an electric Generator. The electric Generator goes on automatically when water in the tunnel gets to a certain level.

4. Canals and gutter should be properly covered with concrete, like in the advanced countries, to prevent people from being swept away and drowned during torrential rainfall. Imagine the canal at Akerele Street Surulere drowning four people !!! I am quite disturbed by this.

canals arent covered anywhere, even in advanced countries.

the overcrowding in lagos is what leads to improper maintenance of the canals.

Monsoon

The major monsoon systems of the world consist of the West African and Asia-Australian monsoons

Most summer monsoons have a dominant westerly component and a strong tendency to ascend and produce copious amounts of rain (because of the condensation of water vapor in the rising air). The intensity and duration, however, are not uniform from year to year.

The other time, parts of Bariga and Shomolu/Akoka/Abule Ijesha were flooded.
