It was a hot day in the month of October. The airport was a beehive of activities as people walked to and fro, making appointments, confirming departure dates, waiting for late flights, clearing luggage and some awaiting the arrival of loved ones.
The Oyeyipo family was among the group waiting for a loved one. Their son, who had gone to study abroad was coming home today, a full fledged lawyer and they had spared no expense to give the only son of the family a befitting welcome back home.
A group of children sat in silence as admonished by their elders, barely able to control their excitement. They had been given the honour and the privilege of chorusing a well rehearsed welcome song for ‘Uncle Yinka’. Mama Oyeyipo and her sisters sat, talking quietly amongst themselves and occasionally adjusting each other’s headgears; eyes constantly flitting to the entrance marked ARRIVALS.
Pa Oyeyipo sat with his kinsmen, pretending to concentrate on the small talk, feigning nonchalance about the delayed flight.
“Aaaah, a plane is coming o”, Ma Oyeyipo stated in her signature thick Yoruba accent, springing up from her seat like a well oiled spring, with a nimbleness that belied her age.
Sit down, Pa countered, though his eyes had grown brighter and his posture more alert at the prospect of his son being in the approaching plane.
The group waited in repressed anxiety, till a few minutes later when the passengers started flitting in through the door.
Ma Oyeyipo jumped up, her relatives forming a cloak of chatter around her and scanned the incoming traffic. Her searching eyes picked up a well-over-average height young man, handsome in a dark manner, distinguished in his grey suit.
YINKA, she shrieked, darting like an arrow straight into his waiting arms.
‘Welicome, welicome, brother Yinka. Our lawyer, brother Yinka from America, Lawyer son of Oyeyipo, we welicome you’, the children started chorusing in the chaos.
Weli…come, we… they drifted into silence as they were angrily shushed by a hassled looking porter.
Leave them alone, fi won si le, Iya Abeke admonished crossly, eyeing the offending porter.
‘You will be turned out by the security, the man explained, shaking his head in sudden amusement as he walked away.
My son, Pa Oyeyipo managed to sputter as Yinka walked towards him. Tears ran down the old man’s face as his only son hugged him tight. My beloved son….
As they broke apart, everybody started talking at once, the kinsmen and sisters taking turns to hug, tears flowing freely.
Leah stood apart, feeling a bit left out but at the same time feeling touched by all the display of emotion. She felt like laughing out loud at the antics of the little children, screaming out of sheer exhaustion, crying at the sight of so much joyful tears and stomping her feet in annoyance at the unnecessary waste of time when she and Yinka should be on the way home for some well deserved rest.
Mama, this is Leah. Yinka said in English, gesturing towards Leah. She is a journalist who has come to see our ways. She wants to write about our ways in her newspaper.
Leah glared for a short minute at Yinka, her mouth open. Journalist, huh? Was that all she was What happened to fiancee? What happened to girlfriend? She noticed Ma Oyeyipo looking her over with cold interest….Was that a hint of distrust and dislike in the icy gaze? Leah wondered, feeling unwanted as Ma Oyeyipo flashed her teeth in what appeared to be more of a smirk than a smile.
You are welcome, Ma Oyeyipo said, taking note of the dark, beautiful face and long legs encased in cream suit and skirt. Her long silky hair was encased in a tight bun and her face glowed with health and vitality. Her brown eyes looked big and innocent, and she easily towered over Ma Oyeyipo in her high heels.
Thank you, mama. Leah bent at the knee as she had researched on the internet, beaming her widest, most fetching smile.
Ma Oyeyipo turned away, pretending not to notice.
Ehm…welcome daughter, Pa Oyeyipo stated quickly, embarrassed. Shall we all take our leave?
********************************************************************************************************************
The welcome party for Yinka was going full swing. A live band was singing in the concrete part of the garden and the strong aroma of spicy food wafted in the evening air….
