A-ZeD:

I'm all for resource control and regional government.
In theory, i subsidy removal is a good thing but removing subsidy in Nigeria is papering over the cracks and not going after the root cause of the problem.
E.g Why did GEJ no pursue a legislation that states that  by 2015, all crude oil drilled in Nigeria must be refined in Nigeria, dont you think Nigerians would have supported subsidy removal??

Such a resolution would have failed in the NASS. Those people are only there to get fat.

As for moving us toward true federalism on the sly, its about the only way Nigeria can move in the right direction. Look at the crazy magnitude of fraud in the subsidy system that is being discussed (and I tell you, we ain't heard nuthin yet) and you will quickly realise that corruption is almost an immovable beast in Nigeria. Anyone hoping to make even a small dent would have to take to some pretty hairy pathways.

Also, as long as the subsidy runs, the refineries will always be sabotaged, totally frustrating any goodwill and wasting our billions in an endless cycle of first, motion, then despair.

From what I have heard so far, the fraud seems to have been carried out by the government, and not even the marketers considering NNPC/PPRA have been the entities with the most control over the process.

Letting #occupynigeria protest continue and pengansson(sp) joining the strike would have shot oil prices in the international market high the world would be focused on Nigeria.
I dont believe GEJ wants to change Nigeria, to me his is part of the problem

@Nateev,
Yes she did the right thing removing the subsidy to understand the problem. Don't forget the whole mess started when the calculating Obj booted her from the finance ministry in favour of Ciroma. How can we blame NOI for a fraud enthroned by Obj. Rather we should commend both GEJ and NOI for having the courage to expose this, even if they have chosen to do it indirectly.

As to why this fraud persist till now. Is it not obvious that time is needed to study the corruption before you expose it. And for that I still give credit to NOI for her decision to expose it rather than cover it up. It shows we still have people of integrity in government. HOPE IS NOT ALL LOST.

Now let Obj and Ciroma tell us the part they played enthroning this scam.

The same way u all were fooled by watching oputa panel, power probe, fct land allocation probe etc. In as much as we d gullible citizens of nigeria keep taking sides and fooling ourselves, history will keep repeating itslf here in 9ja. Whats the dfrnc btwn, pdp, cpc, acn, cabal, boko haram, mend, opc, massob, nlc/tuc, cso's etc? They r all d same people subdivided in2  any of these groups itemised above , exploiting d ignorance of both d so called educated and d uneducated masses of this country. If we were all sane as nigerians we wnt be taken sides rather we should all be ashamed of ourselves with revelations like this. What v d national assembly being doing all these yrs as their oversight functions(made up wit people frm dfrnt parties)? Why will obj institute such monumental corrupt act and d pdp adopted it as a national policy and d opposition parties gave their blessing to it? The governors forum is a colabo of governors from all d political parties and they are all a part of this fraud for 13yrs nw, nt even d opposition parties nw saints raised an alarm all these yrs and the so called nlc/tuc who are d organs of labour kept mute for this donkey yrs and d so called educated nigerians/professional bodies with their overbloated ego and empty skulls couldnt detect this economic rape of a nation of which they are stakeholders and d various mushroom civil society groups  cldnt figure this cos they were chasing international donors here and there whl we d masses out of ignorance, fol!shness, bigotory and incurrable tribalistic DNA's with a wicked mindset and hate for eachother drifted so far away to d extent we cldnt see dis economic gang up against us by same people that divided us . This goes to show the type of people that occupy d geographical entity called nigeria. We r all screaming nw as if we all were nvr in the country when this madness was taken place. After d national show what next? As usual, most of u carrier nl posters will rant, d bigots and d tribalist will fool themselves tryn to out post eachother with insults and the placards carring specialist will make some noise, ait and channels as usual will invite d same nigerians to come on air and form intellectuals discussing d samething we all know and gets our comendation as if we nvr knew this things nt untill they said it. If we cant rise up to demand for just one thing 'TRUE FEDERALISM' then this movies wnt stop being produced.

dude you are not making sense, just like she promised heaven in Nigeria 2005 abi after the largest payment in history of a sum of 16 billion dollars to for debt ? tell us that the 1 billion dollars Nigeria pay every year would be used for roads etc but infact went to over budgeted subsidy. Now subsidy is removed, it would go to the pcokets of the people in government

People need to stop listening to ur crap
Re: Okonjo-iweala Testifies Before Subsidy Probe Committee - Live by Wallie(m): 2:52pm On Jan 19, 2012
@Beaf

1. GEJ recognized corruption with fuel subsidy and realized that the current rate of payments were unsustainable.
2. Instead of fighting corruption head-on, he attempted to resolve it the issue on peoples’ back. Very bad!
3. His removal of subsidy was premature and there’s no proof that the subsidy payments of yester-year cannot be sustained if corruption is stamped out.

Lastly, your argument for backing GEJ’s subsidy removal is really weak! A better argument would have been that Nigeria, just before the subsidy removal, lacked the appetite to support the fiery investigation and anger needed to bring the corrupt officials to book.

I’m glad that GEJ went about the subsidy removal as he did because I think that he kindled the anger and resolve Nigerians needed to demand a functioning government.

Pls. If 'm wrong pls. correct me. Weren't we told at the town hall that demurrages accrued accounted for a large chunk of the astronomical rise in fuel subsidy amount?
Now customs just told us it is duty free.

Shoot!
This probably ranks amongst the most boring probe ever.
Maybe, i'll turn the tv off and do some work.

I found yesterdays a lot interesting.

In anycase, I don't get why NOI is being hounded.
Here are a few observations or (rhetorical) questions

Is she or the ministry physically going to sell the crude??
Inst she supposed to act on what she is being given??
Isn't the finance ministry's job to verify and pay for goods and services (crude)?? In this case receipts or whatever they are called
Is the finance ministry now involved in the fixing of petroleum prices?

What I've noticed is NOI and to a lesser extent Sanusi maybe have raised a red flag on this subsidy brouhaha.
Diezani may have actually forced Jonathan's hand into removing it. Now she's run into muddy/murky waters with these revelations.

Okonjo Iweala is being dragged into it cos she authorised these payments (most probably) without checks of her own. But then, why should she carry out extra checks if and when her peers (diezani, NNPC GMD and others) have told her that the job is done??

What she is doing now is fixing and plugging those loopholes

Now, this is my simplistic assessment of this issue.
Please feel free to educate me.

Re: Okonjo-iweala Testifies Before Subsidy Probe Committee - Live by 989900: 3:10pm On Jan 19, 2012
if NOI agrees they should have done more, why didn't they all try to do more instead of transferring that burden on the masses?

only one answer would suffice (incompetence). . .can't stand the ramblings no more.

Honestly though, finance minister no be small pikin job o
