It is a damned shame what goes on in this country. I happened to be working in a Nigerian commercial bank that was one of the lenders that financed these Dana planes. Another friend of mine was part of the lawyers that worked on the documentation of the financing. These Dana planes are 22 years old! The engines are refurbished and we raised these issues during the transaction but nobody listened. Everyone was eager to close the transaction and move on.

On a related note, a friend who lost the mum in the Sosoliso crash informed me that the compensation has not been paid because the airline was not insured!! It is against policy to fly an uninsured aircraft but someone in the NCAA approved that Sosoliso airline to fly without full insurance coverage.

I am so livid I can't even eat.

An aging aircraft alright, but we have to wait till all the facts are out before drawing any hard and fast conclusions on this point.

Nigeria is the laughing stock of the world.. Some of you should just go on CNN website, and read the comments posted there about this incident...

Also peep this out:

A passenger aircraft crashed into a building in Nigeria's largest city on Sunday.

Casualty figures are not yet immediately known. The government said the plane had 153 passengers on board, but it was unclear how many people had been inside the building.

Firefighters searching for survivors pulled at least one body from the badly damaged building, and several bodies could be seen in the rubble.

The Dana Air flight was flying from Abuja to Lagos. It did not appear to have nosedived into the building, but seemed to have landed on its belly.

It first crashed through a furniture shop and then into residential buildings next to the shop in a densely populated area just north of the airport. The nose of the plane was embedded in the three-storey apartment building, damaging only one part of the structure.

At the scene, fires still smouldered everywhere as a group of men stood atop the landing gear and took pictures with their mobile phones. Emergency services tried to put out fires in a jet engine and carried at least one body from the building as it continued to crumble. Several thousand people looked on.

Two fire trucks and about 50 rescue personnel were at the site an hour after the plane went down. The Nigerian Red Cross arrived, as well as Nigeria's air crash safety investigators.

Lagos's international airport is a hub for west Africa, and 2.3 million passengers passed through it in 2009. The government says it has full radar coverage of Nigeria, but power cuts are common and generators sometimes fail at airports, causing radar screens to go blank.

^^^In a sane world, people should never be allowed to travel by air in Nigeria.. The country is useless!!

question: About 3 weeks ago, a russian brand new plane with experienced pilot crashed in indonesia. Whether new or old plane, na God the protect person.
And the Russian govt pointed accusing fingers at US govt. And when you look at countries that that plane had visited and those ones it still planned to visit, you will see an element of truth in their claim.

I live a couple of kilometers from the flight path to MM airport and sometimes imagine that these planes could crash on houses. Little did I know that my imagination will sooner materialize to reality. Property buyers and prospective tenants beware!

Dana airline! I decided to board one a year and half ago from Abuja. My first impression was that of a refurbished aircraft. With lax regulation and corrupt regime, what do expect from these Asian merchants? It is painful because this is clearly preventable. NCAA and FAA, what are you doing?

In fact this country is so Bizzare,
Plane crash at Ishaga near my house, Fire fighters have no oxygen to work with,
Dressed in casual wear like we the spectators, No helmet, No safety boot,
Arriving at the scene about 30 minutes later.
The house affected that was on fire victims shouting for help inside with no one to help, police just walking as if its just a riot, leaving people at risk near the burning plane,
LASTMA, AIR FORCE, NIMASSA, ROAD SAFETY, SOLDIERS, POLICE, MAN O WAR, among others unable to cub the fire within 2 1/2 hours.
People stealing at the scene

Only God can help us in this country where the leaders just think only on how to embezzle money.
God! and you are watching...............................................

Pls check your news reports> Flight left Abuja for Lagos. I have nothing to gain from posting such stories if false. 90% of news reports will tell u that it was a Lagos bound flight from Abuja. Few of our local news source are reporting that it was a lagos to Abuja flight which developed fault and was returning to the airport. Her friends in ABJ has confirmed the above but however I am not here to sensationalize news. I was just putting a human face to such a sad tragedy. Its up to u to believe what u want to believe.

Indians are killing us! Send them packing!http://www.danagroup.com/Profile/Board-of-Directors.aspx

I think is this related to the Petrol Subsidy Investigation: The target was Dr Levi Ajuonuma. Read is comment here during the Fuel Subsidy protest:

I have followed the subsidy debate/protest and must confess that we at NNPC have not helped in the fight against corruption. I can authoritatively say that the N1.3trillion is not the true figure but given as a result of the corrupt tendencies of the cabal. This astronomical increase in 2011 was purely political. Also, our local consumption figure as published is absolutely incorrect.

For the sake of my children and children's children, we must investigate this fraud. From PPPRA, to NNPC, Independent Marketers, Port Authorities, retired Generals and Other top government officials. Although, the whole fraud existed before 2007, the reasonable take off should be 2007 to date.

Consequently, I have decided to resign my appointment as the Group General Manager, Corporate Affairs of NNPC.

If this is true, then the #occupynigeria movement is achieving tremendously.
We have to push them to the level of exposing themselves.

They are eliminating the witnesses one by one...

Life is but a fiction and death has remained man's greatest enemy to joy and its equally the greatest humbler of both the mighty and the weakling.
Times like this always make me to realize the fact that life is quite temporal and man lives and dies in vanity.
May the good Lord comfort the families of the deceased and and equally have mercy on the living.

It's only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had.
May they rest in Peace.
