Even more important than how the physical structure finally turned out will be the landscaping and flowers planted around this hotel.

The Uyo Meridien Hotel isn't fantastic because of the physical structure alone, but the use of palm trees, flowers and grass to make the environment truly fantastic.

[size=15pt]Typically, Anambra is one of the places where the prevailing attitude is that planting flowers & trees around such buildings is considered as unnecessary and definitely not as important as the physical structure itself.

However, one hopes that emphasis on transforming the environment around the Agulu & Onitsha resort hotels is made a priority. Clear the bushes around these hotels and plant palm trees & grasses in its place to make a beautiful garden resembling a golf course around these hotels. Environmental aesthetics through proper landscaping makes all the difference in the world.

@ Chima, very important point! .........Don't forget Landscaping!!!

One hopes that they won't spend all this money building the structures and will not do proper landscaping.
It will be a major mistake if they fail to do landscaping around these hotels and malls as well as the roads leading to them.

Nigerians generally only consider flowers to be part of the beauty of a rich man's compound.Which makes us typically not worry about looking at red soil instead flower gardens in the middle of well grassed open spaces.

I once told a friend that Obudu Cattle ranch was such serene, charming and alluring place in spite of being mere bungalow chalets because the greenery of the breath taking landscaping of the environment.

Yes I understand your point. Agulu Resort and Onitsha Resort are all 5 star facilities of world class status. The flowering/grassing, landscape and its environs will measure up with what we see in Dubai 5 star facilities when completed..

Exclusive :Can Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu’s 140 Million Dollars Investment In Awka Survive? Niccus Employers Cry For Help!

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, a former House of Representative Member and Evangelist as well as an Industrilaist weekend broke a cheering news that his multi million dollar investment in Awka is set to be commissioned, but Anambrarians are receiving the news with a pinch of salt based on the agonies of those working at Niccus Industries Limited. Discover yourself below:

Odogwuemekaodogwu.com reports that Ukachukwu is a dogged fighter even in politics and all he had laid his hands on even in beating mercilessly political opponents but that announcement is with a hiccup.

As a former gubernatorial aspirant in the state under PDP and later Hope party, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu was outstanding and marches money for money and force to force with all major contenders. He could have been in the senate now representing Anambra South senatorial zone but for smartness of Chief Chris Ubah that outshine his own smartness and his brother Senator Andy Ubah is there now.

At a stakeholders meeting at the Governor’s lodge weekend Prince Ukachukwu announced that his $140m investment in Awka would soon be ready for commissioning while he was perfecting plans to cite more industries in other parts of the state.

He commended the governor for demonstrating a deep sincerity of purpose and assured him of his support as well as his belief in his ability to deliver on his promise to Ndi Anambra, odogwuemekaodogwu.com reports exclusively.

But the fears stemmed from the investment at Onitsha Niccus industries limited manufacturing over 21 domestic products including ladies sanitary towels , baby diapers , pencils , medicated , Antiseptic , Toilet and Bar soap, plastic bottles and bottled water.
Others are Instant noodles , Jute sack and Ghana must go bags , converted papers and cartons , can juice as well as Polythene and shopping bags
Niccus Industries limited is located at Nkpor Junction and before now was beehive of activities employing over 6,000 direct and about 1,000 indirect staff .

But today staff are owed several months of salary and the place is a ghost of itself with many resigning and going without their entitlements.

It was alleged that the manager who happens to be a relative of the Prince ran the place aground as one could not reconcile the business acumen in Prince and Princess estate as well as many international schools that are a huge success to the Niccus delima which is an irony, odogwuemekaodogwu.com reports further.
Niccus is a subsidiary of SNECOU Group of companies.

But the Managing Director of Niccus Industries Limited , Pastor Oguine told odogwuemekaodogwu.com that all hope was not lost to resuscitate the factory back to its footings as every efforts have been put in place by the chairman Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu to revamp the ailing factory.

He blamed the previous governments in the state of being responsible for the predicament the factory is suffering because the Chairman of the company Prince Ukachukwu is in politics , his efforts were allegedly frustrated leading to the suffering of the over 7,000 staff in the company.

He decried the pains and agonies thousands of workers there went through because of adverse government policies without knowing that it would not be the Chairman of the company that would suffer the pains but the masses employed there. He hoped soonest all the agonies would be in the past.

And because the MD was skeptical of odogwuemekaodogwu.com , he was not troubled further about some salient points about Niccus like how many years staff were owed salary and stuff like that.

On October 6, the Anambra State Ministry of Education released the list of not less than 874 unregistered (illegal) private schools operating in the state. In an advertorial in the Daily Sun of October 6, on pages 50-53, and signed by the Education Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Barrister Harry Udu, the state government urged the proprietors of the blacklisted schools to register immediately with the state Ministry of Education or risk being closed for business forthwith.

A breakdown of the illegal primary and secondary schools that almost cut across the 21 local government areas of the state shows that the Awka South Local Government area topped the list with 294; Idemili North Council came second with 79; while Oyi and Idemili South Councils clinched a distant third position with 67 of such illicit centres of learning respectively.

Similarly, Nnewi North Local Government ranked 4th with 52 schools; and quickly followed by Ogbaru council with 44; and Onitsha North Council with 37. Aguata Council got 36; Ihiala and Orumba South had 31 each; Ekwusigo 23 while Anambra East got 21. Also, Nnewi South and Njikoka had 16 each; Awka North 15; Anambra West and Anaocha 11 each; Onitsha South and Orumba North 8 respectively while Ayamelum came last with 7.

It is commendable that the Anambra State Ministry of Education has published the worrisome list of illegal private schools in the state. The officials of the Ministry of Education that fished out the illegal schools deserves a pat on their back for a job well done. Although the education ministry did not give a deadline for the illegal schools to register before being shut down, we implore them to give ample time and opportunity for the affected schools to remedy the situation.

However, we do not believe that this statistics of illegal private primary and post-primary schools are peculiar to the state. There is no doubt that such schools may have been operating unhindered in other remaining 35 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). And if the scenario is a true reflection of the situation at hand, then the country would be preparing to grapple with the consequences of having large number of unregistered private primary and secondary schools in already problematic education sector.

Besides being illegitimate, these schools might lack adequate manpower and infrastructure and equipment to operate as schools. The presence of such illegal schools with unqualified teaching staff does more harm to the education sector than any other sector. We call on other state ministries of education and those in charge of education in FCT to beam their searchlight on schools in their respective domain in order to discover such illegal schools that dot the nooks and crannies of the entire country. They should not rest on their oars with the hope that all is well with the education sector while unscrupulous proprietors are bent on worsening the already worse standard of education in the country through the operation of illegal schools.

It is understandable that there is greater need for primary and secondary education, especially in urban settings, but care must be taken to ensure that the standard is not compromised.

Care must also be taken in giving operation licences for proprietors of private schools to ensure that quality is not compromised. All those that operate illegally should be closed down to avoid unnecessary watering down of the standard of education, especially at such basic levels in the country.

Beyond this, government should find ways to increase access to education at primary and secondary stages which are broader than the tertiary level in the education pyramid. We say this bearing in mind that government has made it mandatory for every Nigerian child to be educated from primary school to at least the Junior Secondary School (JSS3) level. For this policy to work, government should broaden access to education that will make it impossible for illegal private schools to proliferate and flourish in the country as the case of Anambra State has seemingly demonstrated.

Since education is on the concurrent legislative list, we urge all the stakeholders in the federal, state and local governments to act in concert to check the unbridled increase in illegal schools. Surely, education is indeed the best legacy that can be bequeathed to the teeming youths. But such a noble legacy is likely to be vitiated when the quality is compromised through illegal private schools at the basic levels.

And we wonder why we are producing empty heads as graduates....The system is filled with half baked teachers and substandard schools.

THE Anambra State government is to commence immunization against cerebrospinal meningitis throughout the state from October 21 to 29, 2014.

In a press briefing organized by the State’s Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organizaion(WHO), UNICEF, National Primary Health Care Development Agency(NPHCDA), the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Joe Akubuike said the age range for the immunization covers between 1-29 years, but added that residents above 29 years could come for the exercise if they feel threatened by the disease.

He disclosed that Cerebrospinal Meningitis accounts for about 170,000 deaths annually, adding that presently about 5 -10 percent of Nigeria’s population may be asymptomatic carriers. “The carriers are crucial to the spread of the disease which in most cases are transmitted from person to person through droplets from the nose and mouth.

“The disease mainly affects small children, but can equally affect young adults who are most at risk as over crowding, dry season and waning immunity predispose to the epidemics,” Akubike noted.

He recalled that statistics have shown that 655 cases with 33 deaths in 22 states were recorded in Nigeria in 2011, adding that Anambra State has never recorded any case presently.

Akubuike further disclosed that 26 states, including Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo and Kogi , among others were selected for the third phase.

He said it was so because the zones are situated in the high risk meningitis area , adding that the Federal government and the collaborating agencies had done the first stage.

According to him, the state government had concluded arrangement to cover all the 21 councils in the state, adding that ,”the overall aim of the campaign is to eliminate epidemics of meningococcal meningitis, vaccinate 95 percent of individuals between 1-29 years, strengthen the case and laboratory based surveillance system as well as to sustain the eradication of polio virus in Anambra State.

You are right that we should provide waste disposal bins, but I have seen people that simply dump their trash into the gutters right in front of their houses when it rains! In spite of the official refuse dump site being only a few blocks away!

The right attitude is still our major challenge especially in Anambra and Abia states.
Every compound i visited in Anambra state had some sort of flowers and trees planted inside the compound to beautify it and more importantly was regularly swept and kept clean. Many people see public property as nobody's property and therefore it should be abused. So, after sweeping inside of their compounds every morning, they simply open their gates to dump the dirty gathered right in the center of the road outside their house! Even in Onitsha Main market where many get their livelihood, our peoples attitude is to sweep the inside of their shops every morning and dump the trash in the alley or public passage right in front of their shop!!!
Thus, when you speak of planting flowers along roads or public buildings, our people stare at you strangely as if you have lost your mind! Because in their understanding, the roads and schools, malls are not anybody's property,so you must not make any effort whatsoever to keep them clean and decent, to the extent of planting flowers?

I tell you, the biggest challenge to transforming Anambra is all about changing our peoples' attitudes and psyche towards public properties and utilities.

Anambra, particularly the major city of Onitsha and its environs is a lot cleaner now. The new ASEPA has a mandate to evacuate wastes every morning. And the occupants are cooperating, because even the last time I went to Awada I noticed that they are given black nylons in which they put and tie the waste and carefully drop it at the front of their premises. This makes the job a lot easier for the waste manager to evacuate every morning.
