Trust me you need to.this is sophia. She just completed her basic class with us at Valisimo fashion school
when she came in 3months ago she could not measure cut or sew but today she can make simple outfits for male female and kids. She also can make curtains throw pillows and other simple soft furnishings.
she made the dress she is putting on here .She did not waste her time with us and thats why she has a certificate to show for completing her basic class grin
So go register your self at a fashion school today.you will be happy you did. wink

Wow,I've always wanted to go into fashion I remember I learnt it in a mushroom tailor shop near my house when I finished my secondary school and all I ended up doing was running errands for my boss.but to be candid I'm seriosly interested in going to a fashion school and interested in knowing where yours is?

@EFOSAVAL I looove your thread and the way you give detailed explanations. I'm convinced now that I can do basic sewing. The thing now is getting a sewing machine. I wanted to go for an electric one but changed my mind because the electricity situation in my area is seriously bad so I'm thinking a manual sewing machine would be better. What's the difference between the sewing machine that those 'obioma' carry about and the ones tailors use that has the foot spinning thingy?

the 'obioma' machune and the tailor's machine are one and the same..its jus that the tailors machine is controlled with the legs while the 'obioma' is hand controlled...

Please class, I wud also like to add that there a lot of people following this thread.. We shud not wait for our teacher to come answer our colleagues questions .. with some of the problems they are having with their clothing...if u help someone with a problem, its makes the job of the teacher easier and she also gets to know that we are learning ourselves..and its really encouraging....not that we jus leave questions for her to come answer herself.if u give a wrong answer, some other people would help out...that's learning .She is also busy u know...

Lol really happy that you know you can do it too.
The sewing machines you mentioned now are both the same in terms of functions since they both do straight sewing.but as regards operating it that's where they are different. The type obioma has is the table top sewing machines type.and it can be operated manually by using your hand or electrically

the other type is the regular sewing one which you use your leg to peddle .I will personally recommend that you get this type and not the obioma one biko grin grin coz it will make you enjoy the sewing process more wink

Warding and airstay question , its not a must you use them together.I used the two because I wanted an the cup effect very well on the blouse.there some styles that I sew that I don't add it so it really depends. To apply it u need to apply heat on it so it will stick to the fabric you want to place it on.

Measurement areas for 6 piece skirt.

Waist
Hip
Half length
Full length

Usually what determines a 6 piece skirt is the circumference area at the down part of the skirt which is always influenced by the amount of fabric you have for the skirt. eg 2 -3 yards or more

Re: Let's Sew For Fun (**valisimo Fashion School Online Classroom**) by EFOSAVAL(f): 4:35pm On Oct 25, 2014
My measurement is
Waist 37
Hip 44
Half length 18
Full length 43

Now I have 3 yards for this project that means I
have 36 ×3=108 inches to work with.thats what I will use for my folding.also note that 6 piece skirt would have 7 different pieces coz the center back will be cut into two for the zip.
