Sanchez01 mhizmycoli you both nailed it. The name is a source of identification and the one you were given at birth all of it constitute your own unique identity so whether it reads like a novel or not that name identifies YOU as a singular entity so the correct usage is: my name is oladimeji akinlola adeote animashaun Okikiola.

When referring to the first name and surname, forget "my names are" it is clearly a mathematical logic which does not work in linguistics.

However, one can say "my names are" when referring to aliases.

E g

My names are death, coffin, and undertaker.

One point to note here is, when using "are" a list usually follows. So, if you are to say my names are, you should list them.

e.g
My names are segun and adelaja

Instead of "my name is segun adelaja"

In short, whenever you are asked your name, reply with "my name is" and then pronounce your name as a phrase.

Or, say "my names are" and then list your names. Using and before the last item.

That is grammatically correct.

Cheers!

This is the easiest break down for yoy bro....
When you use ARE in a question the response is accompanied by an AND added to it.
So if i ask 'What ARE your names?' then the reply must be 'my names ARE Goodluck,Ebele AND Jonathan. Which we all know the response automatically is a wrong way of saying ones name.
But asking 'what IS your name?' gives the response my name IS Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. All names becomes a singular representation of ones identity.

Nigerians that bear numerous names. Here in london, only your name et last name IS recognised. One could use 'my names are' informally. so to end this debate. 'My name is' is the most appropriate and widely accepted form of english. Your name is either your whole name or a part of your name eg. My name is Israel or My name is Israel Teethcomb Adakole as directed to answering the question, what is your name. Also, His names are Tom Daura Godwin Devile As reported or written hence answering the question what is/are his name_s. P.s: Quote

Unfortunately, both of you are wrong. There is no such thing as "my names are...". Here lemme explain;

1. The question is "What IS your NAME?": Note, the question did not come with the plural BrE+ form which in this regard would be "ARE". Hence, the question is directed to a singular form or entity (which is one person) and the answer would be singular as well. Therefore "My name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is most correct".

2. "Name" is a Noun but one's name is singular: This is quite complicated but simple at the same time. A name is an identity by which something is known or described as.

So, when we say "Names", we refer to several others but this is the tricky part; regardless of how many names you bear or carry, you are ONE person. Hence,, we refer to you as a singular entity and not belonging to the plurality class. Hermaphrodites who are even known to possess both male and female features are not pluralized.

Bearing the above in mind, it would imply that the several "NAMES" you have all belong to "ONE" person which is YOU. This is why it is proper to say "My name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan".

NB: Goodluck+Ebele+Jonathan are all names but they belong to ONE person, therefore it cannot be pluralized during introduction.

Finally, instead of saying "My names are" just say "My full name is..."
E.g;

Customs inspector: Would you please state your name?

Passenger: I'm Goodluck Jonathan

Inspector: Excuse me, sir. Would you please state your full name? / Would you please state your name in full?

Passenger: Sorry! My full name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

OP, here is your answer.

If you're a graduate and you insist it should be MY NAMES ARE when introducing yourself, you need to do just two things;

* Return the certificate issued to you.
* Refund your father's hard earned money.

Personally I don't know the correct one but last week my language lecturer explain to us that we should never us that word "my names are" because it would feel as if we have different identity so "my name is" is the correct one.

If you're using a compound name the are is correct but if it's just an individual then "is" is correct. My name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, my names are Patience Amechi-Jonathan
