Well done Op.
But seriously, don't u think these creatures are too tiny to serve any purpose coz I'm just wondering if these snails can ever outgrow their shells?
Abi una go dey change the size of their shells to bigger ones too?

Good morning Agriculturists,

I've been moved by going through various researches both from this website and via Google to begin a snail farm.

My snail farm is not really a farm as per say. It is just a bucket where the snail will be raised till maturity. To avoid the infestation of insects, ants and diseases, my snailery will be suspended in the air with ropes like a playground swing.

Pictures will follow up later.

Nice one.... But just a suggestion, why not use old tyres to rear the snails. I think that should be more spacious for them and u wont av to physically touch them often. I have once tried this bucket method and it wasnt successful at all. Actually mine was even a very big plactic drum.

Snail shells contain compounds that are similar to your finger nails. I am sure that your nails have grown from when you were a child to now. The shells do grow. @OP, you will need to get bigger specie of snails and more room for them. That bucket is to small and will result in stunted growth.

Kudos on your entrepreneurial spirit. Quick advice - The use of a paint bucket is not very healthy for the snails and even if does not affect them, they may have chemicals in them that will get passed on to your eventual consumers. When you farm, always consider the effect of your production on your market.

I hope you do not take my criticism the wrong way. Globally, the trend is towards organic food production with no chemicals. If your business grows and you start to export, you will find that naturally grown food fetches a premium on the world market. Good luck and may your business grow beyond your dreams.

Please ponder!

Alright Sir, I'm looking forward to editing their pen. As the topic says, this was just a small scale startup... I'd soon move it a little top notch level higher

I have a snail supply business and you too can get on board by ordering in fairly large quantity and resell for fast N100 profit on one so imagine selling 300 snails weekly.

No matter where you reside, we will get it down to the nearest park to you.

Really, but how do the small shells give way for the increasing size?

Take a look at this two pictures... Then decide for yourself whether it is possible

They outgrow their shells... They need calcium to help their shells grow bigger.

To be frank, what I had in mind was tyres but I had no where to get them cos the ones we had, we threw them away few weeks before I conceived this idea

Now as I said earlier, this is small scale breeding in a paint bucket. I just picked them up from around my compound today and I'll still pick up more later at night and in my farm too.

I don't know the species really but I think they are Achinata marginata.
Achantina marginata is good taking their size as a point of consideration!

My "boys" in their new home. I gave them ugu leaves, pawpaw leaves, pawpaw and water leaves yesterday to eat. On coming back this morning, I realized that they finished everything except the water leaves. Seems like they don't like it that much
Nice one Neduzze5 I will also suggest you add some egg shells to their feed! It will strengthen their shells so they don't die off on you! And since you are also having hatchlings please keep them separated from the adults, to avoid them being eating up.

If they were in their natural habitat the layers will burrow into the ground to lay its eggs To avoid stories that touch. I use to farm GALs sometime ago.

Op,i dunno about this bucket thingy but when i was rearing snail before i left for school this time last year i mad use of car tyres placing dem ontop of eachoda, wit loamy soil filled on a concrate floor which is more efficient has the snail would enjoy the shape of d tyre in moving around, also know that dey like shady places which tyres provide unlke bucket which is kindah opened ,also all would not b jam packed as two medium sized tyres can btake as much as 30 fairly big snails with still space.
Also feed them more in the night around 8pm,nd have yu tried cucumber? they so much love it.
Goodluck.

if u want to enjoy snail farming, call me 07033913201 u can flash and i'll call u.

.. if you want to do commercial snail farming, u must have a land. if u wanna do just a backyard snail farming, u need atleast half a room size and I can build it in such a way that d snails can never escape ur pen.

Thanks for the suggestions dear. I'm working on the egg shells and feed for them. I've a different pen for the newly hatched and another different pen for the eggs
