We are trying to rise from our caveman days. Lynching people won't help us with that.

Like you said, someone could be accused falsely but before we know he's innocent, he's already been killed in moments of passionate anger.

The solution for justice must rely on our judicial system. That's where we need to change things to make sure criminals don't get away with horrendous offenses because our justice system is slack.
So what do you suggest? Print their names on media? How will that affect someone with dead conscience? I mean someone who has no name or image to protect.

Wrong. Capital punishment doesnt work, especially when a person can't be 100% proven guilty or 100% convicted without doubt.

What we beat/castrate an innocent man?

Here are the steps to be taken

-First produce material (Videos, pamphlets and conventions) that inform men and women about their rights and ra.pe. This should be done in many languages for all Nigerians to understand.

-TV stations and health workers around the nation should be educated and also themselves educate the masses about ra.pe and pe.dophilia

-Laws regarding ra.pe and pedop.hilia should be ratified. Also, false rape allegations should carry heavy penalties.

On the grassroot levels
-educate your sisters, children, nieces and nephews on ra.pe and pedophilia
-get nairaland admin to promote anti-rape and safe-sex threads on the front page
-don't be a molester grin grin grin

It will not affect him you say? When people will see him and stay away from him while also keeping their children away. And others who have a conscience will use him as an example and will not commit the same crime that he committed.

I just thought about something, what if people take time out to talk about it in public places. Like a set of people dedicated to sensitizing the general public and all.

We need to sensitize the police men about taking bribes as regards rape cases. Or ask the FG to create an entirely different department to take care of Rape cases, charges and victims without involving Police men.

Yes, that was one of the points I was trying to get across. This is the same thing done for condom and AIDS- some health workers go to villages to preach about safe sex and they are paid for. They should expand to ra,pe and molestation

What of the toddlers, the little girls of 6-10years, the little boys? What about them? Is indecent dressing enough reasons to rape someone?

Busky, what do you think should be done to sexual offenders that will effectively curb rape and abuse?

This one is quite interesting.

Anyway here are my thoughts on the issue.

1. Harsh penalties are not a deterrent. A would be rapist will not baulk at the thought of doing time or even killed as a consequence for his\her perverse quest for gratification.

2. Educating people about r ape is pointless. Most men and women are fully aware of what the crime is. I doubt that anyone in the world is under the illusion that non-consensual sexual relations are morally and/or legally right.

3. Most victims do not report sexual attacks. Here in the UK there have been recent incidents when former victims are coming forward to report attacks from 20-30 years ago, often after their attackers have long passed away. RAINN (an anti_rape charity in America claim that about 68% of all sexual attacks go unreported)

4. Sexual offenders lists will not work in Nigeria for obvious reason: Lack of infrastructure, power, and the effectiveness of bribery

5. Law enforcement is non-existent. In 2012 I was introduced to a guy at Evans square Ebutte-Metta, who was just fresh out of jail. He was a convicted murder. According to government records, he is awaiting execution at KiriKiri prison....Instead he's a big time dope mover on Lagos Island.

To this end, I believe it is the Onus of every man and woman in Nigeria to protect himself/herself from rape, cos no-one else will do it for you. The government lacks the ability and/or political goodwill to implement any useful reforms.

Nigeria is also a country where criminals are most likely to get away with the crime. It's not gong to get better any time soon.

Nigeria is too broken to fix...and you realistically cannot hope to curb sexual offences in Nigeria. The best you can do is to try and protect yourself.

You already know how our judicial system is here in Nigeria..
I just feel there are other solutions we are overlooking.
How they expose rapists who are found guilty over there in the states?

The law takes care of them.
After serving their jailterm, they get entered into the sex offenders list for a good number of years. Sometimes almost for life.
That way, anywhere they move to, they have to go inform their neighbors by law that they are registered sex offenders. Humiliating huh?
It also affects their job prospects, and those who were convicted of paedophilia aren't allowed anywhere near children.
But if after the required number of years they don't recommit the offense, they will be taken off the register as reformed individuals (hopefully)

Your solution is to do nothing. It is easy for a strong man to say "protect yourself". Can a 10 year old girl protect herself?

You are now arguing about creating awareness about rape? See awareness about rape will reduce rape, especially when vulnerable people get to know how to avoid being targeted.

Guy, open your dark mind for once.

Sis, Nigeria is not ripe enough for this.

If there is indeed a database and the offender is ready to pay N5m yearly for a house worth N800k?

Standd, I have read your question and though my knowledge of daily life in Nigeria today is limited, my suggestion is this;
Education.
Many people are unaware of their human rights, of their value in the society so these problem is not theirs until it happens close to home where they cannot ignore it any longer.
Such mindset might be difficult to change as it is firmly entrenched in their psyche.
However with children, this is not the case. Their minds are still pliable, their eyes open to the wonders of the world and their imagination, unfettered where they dream and are hopeful.
This is where we should start before the damage is done irreparably. Proper sex education in school and at home. Not just about the biological mechanics and devoid of religious connotations.
Teaching about respecting oneself, one's body and also others as well. Teach about settings where sexual relationships are appropriate, understanding the rights of others when they say no and respecting it.
Removing the taboo of discussing sex openly and letting them know the various contexts and subtexts of abuse.
Teaching them how to spot tell tale signs of abuse, how to protect themselves in such situations and if possible avoid it all together.
Provide avenues for these children to speak to a responsible adult in a position of authority without fear of censure.
Incorporating this into the educational system, will not eradicate the issue completely but hopefully, we can start to grow a better generation of youths.
How do we entrench this? Well this is the age of social media, many of us are parents and we send our children to schools. Without pupils, there will be no schools so collectively, we can use that power we have there to demand greater protection for our kids in terms of creating awareness as part of their curriculum.

Great. Nigeria is light years away from achieving all this.
Fixation on tradition, beliefs that a man should be respected even when he is a fvcking rapist and murderer, diabolism and a very corrupt judicial system is rife is Nigeria.
I am interested @the bolded and already mailing Newspaper outfits to see what can be done in that regards.

First, protect the underage girls. From the age of 5/6 my nieces already know that no one is supposed to touch them anyhow. Also, they never go out alone. They are also told to report any teacher or any guardian or relative behaving funny to them.

Parents too are needed. My parents gave us children close marking. They hardly left us in the hands of others

Exactly my dear.
Just what I was saying.

Reorientation is crucial as of this moment. Imagine some people asking why a lady visited a guy in response to 'why he raped her'

Shows there's something fundamentally wrong.

yea, ur points are true, but honestly I think nothing can be done about it, cos there is a spirit behind it, if the united states for example, after all the measures they put in place for sexual offenders, the jail terms, the community services, the sexual offender records for abusers and all that and yet the crime rate is above average there, and with all the jungle justice in india yet the perpetrators are not witholding, if we are to introduce a strict law for it here in our country, those that can afford the judiciary system will always buy their way through, especially the relatives or close associates of the same people that passed the bill. I remember when a brother of some one popular was arrested for raping a young lady in lagos, we only heard that the man was arrested and nothing more.

My verdict is this, lets do all we can to pass the message against rape and sexual abuse, and pray it doesn't befall any of us (our children, wives, mothers, relatives and friends), we shouldn't trust the government to make a move on it, cos most of em are guilty of it. And most of all pray for those that perpetrate the act cos like I said most of em do so under the influence of an evil spirit......any other action u wan take my hand no dey oh...lol.

We know some parents are so careless that their children get molested under their very nose. When parents are careless, who/what protects the child?

@ topic, I believe in reorientation. The average person out there is warped and almost imbecilic in reasoning. No offense.
How do you explain blaming and shaming victims while the perp goes around proudly like he did nothing. An added trauma on top of the one they've already been subjected to during the rape?
How do you explain a victims being asked "what were you wearing when it happened?". A simple but powerful question that connotes it is not the criminal's fault but the victims. How do you explain everyone around including law enforcement hushing victims and sometimes reprimanding them for not collecting money to just overlook what was done to them?

Until such diseased mindsets are scraped from among us, we would be pouring water on stone.
We need an overhaul. A very very sensational (if exaggerated) campaign against any form of sexual offenses regardless of if the victim walked out of his or her house neykid. Starting from the grassroots. Primary schools and working upwards. hopefully catch those ones young if we are lucky, some who have already grown with such mindsets will learn better.

Punishment too (long long jail terms). Like someone already suggested.
I don't even know how the sex offenders list will work when we don't have active database. How many employers can afford to run background checks in Nigeria. Maybe the big companies. But the smaller ones in smaller communities can't do such. They'll just employ a pedophile and set him or her to babysit kids.

I tire seriously.

Nothing more to add. Well done

I think allowing the man to walk naked in a market or an open place would be better.

There's this paedophile in my area who rapes children.
He has been arrested and beaten up several times but he seems not to desist from the act.
He lure little girls with a token of money.
Recently, I was standing outside a shop and he was kindof passing by, a little girl barely 12years came out from a house beside the shop and he saw her and probably wanted to turn back and follow her while staring lecherously.
Our eyes caught each other, and he pretended as if he was looking for someone else he couldn't find, so that he'll turn back and follow the girl.

Back to rape, I wonder what people like herald9 enjoy from a forced sex. undecided

Please, never say never. If a very wealthy man molests a young girl and his pictures and details are posted everywhere, in Newspapers, on the streets, on cyberspace, don't you think it will deter him from doing such another time?

@Second bolded, what is this evil spirit you talk about? Do you mean Konji the bastard or real Demons
yea true talk, if a rich man is brought down by such disaster it wont stop a poor man from doing the same, lets take a case study, a jewish man after serving a ten year jail term for stabbing people during a gay pride parade in Israel in 2005 was released just last month and barely three weeks after his release he commited the same act he was jailed for just on thursday, dis time around he stabbed 6 people, what do you suggest they do to him this time? ??

Back to the topic, what if konji na the demon name...lol
