I marvelled at NL comments on this topic! We are Africans and that's the way we were also brought up. Why will you have to spare the rod and spoil the child? Most of you were brought up this way and turned out good. So u people want to bring 'oyinbo mentality' in this too and destroy the lives and future of our young ones? This is catastrophe!!!

We did not turn out well at all. You can see it in our everyday lives, that is why we cannot tackle issues effectively; why husbands will continue to beat their wives (thanks to their parents and the younger sisters), why wives would not mind being slapped (parents and elder brothers); why we always achieving things with undue aggression; cultism; work environment and marketplace.

It is not Oyinbo mentality. If that were true we would have been far better than them in values and achievements. I have babysat Oyinbo kids with no problem although it proved difficult at first but it became easier when I used my brain. I have classmates who have never been flogged doing great however this is not to say that some kids do not need 'spanking' every now and then,

DO NOT BEATVMY CHILD
I MEAN DO NOT
I can beat myself but not you

Wow...so what is the function of the teacher in cases where ur child misbehaves?

We have seen children become extortionists and premature cultists in school environs... So teachers and principals shouldn't dicipline the child....

Oh.. No hope for Nigeria Nigeria

teacher shldnt punish a student because he got a question wrong or is nt following d class intellectually. Children v different levels of assimilation,so a teacher shld nt term any student as blockhead.

It is a choice of the parents, it is not a bad idea to beat a child if he/she misbehaves. Pampering a child is also a very serious issue on its own to the child and the family, even to the society. Beating a child unjustly is also not fair. Worthy of note, beating a child for wrong doing in most circumstances is corrective to the child whether we like it or not. Some children are naturally stubborn and may defile corrections thru beating, in that case you leave it for God to correct or they find themselves in reman homes which eventually bring abt emotional tuture to the parents. Parents be wise.

The right word should be punish the child and not beat. If my childs teachers doesnt punish him/her for wrong doings I will withdraw that child from the school. I wonder what we feel these days for not spanking a child that has done wrong. Where are the morals?

We tend to copy the americans but we forget so soon that these kids are in different environment. Thats why they go out shooting and maiming their colleagues in school.

Well,you decide what you want.

There was a time my sister fought her kids teacher, that her kid always come home with second position without knowing anything, that the kid could not write 1 2 3 to 200,the teacher just told her to seat down and watch! then nag at the kid to write 100 to 1000, you wont believe the kid wrote everything without a single mistake
this is one of the reason you have to beat this kids if you want them to be successfull

Ooooh yes I believe beating is part of discipline especially in the society we found ourselves, just that many people apply illiteracy to it

Oooh yes ! I will sometimes employ little scolding to a reasonable level

If the fear of cane could make me get to school early and also do my assignment, so why would I castigate a teacher for scolding my children for coming late or not doing their assignment

I don't think I can raise up my hand to beat my own child (except some little slaps and knocks when necessary) not to talk of another person beating him/her....
Seems inhumane to me.. There are other ways to correct a child then beating...

One of d duties of d teacher is to b a parent-substitute,meaning as soon as d child enters d school gate,s/he automatically becomes d teacher's child n anyhow a parent decides to handle his or her child is how d child wil b handled,n no parent wil kill his or her child.

The teacher is not a parent substitute and can't be.

If it can't be stopped I will stop it on my own childrens' time, this has became something our so called school teachers do to peoples' kids in the name of "spare the rod and Spoil the child" bullsh*t. after fighting with ur husband/wife at home then you start looking for other peopls kids to rest on.. Don't even try it because na ur body self go tell u.

@bold

Go ahead and DO IT! Yes, you can! Amen.

As a teacher, i discipline my students. use of cane is not the first mode if discipline.
You can adopt various means
1. The student can be given two or three pages of the dictionary to copy into an exercise book and to learn their meaning. The mode of discipline depends on age, class, nature of the offence committed and gender

First of all, how does this method teach the child what is wrong with his or her behavior in a specific situation?
Secondly, you do not know that new words should not be learned in an alphabetical order?
