If Coach Fani Amun who was a brilliant man was nurtured to become the Coach Of Atlanta 96, more of those boys would have made it to the Super Eagles. That is just the point. If we use and dump coaches, we are just dropping a pool of talented boys.

I have no doubt that our 93 U17 triumphing team would have excelled in the 1995 U20 if we maintained the team. It is time we develop a team maintenance culture by grooming coaches thst performed well.

So bc Fani Amun won U17 & was promoted to U20(of which he wumbled and fumbled)u are of d opinion dat he should have been promoted to U23 & Super Eagles so he can carry along his U17 boys. I expected something better from some1 of ur calibre. I had to recheck ur moniker to b sure dat this is TheGoodJoe.Hu was Oruma when Okocha was still in charge in d CMF , hu was Ojigwe when Oliseh was in DMF, Kanu was a sub when Amokachi, Mutiu and Siasia were battling for supporting syriker role for King Yekini. Hu was Oparaku when Egwuavoen was d right back. Celestine was able to pin d left back after Iroha retired frm d national team. Sentiments aside, most of those Amun boys could nt easily pin down shirts in d super eagles. The excuse is just returning from Holiday. The truth is that a far younger team spanked them so much, people asked for a review of the development of players in the league.

What of the U23 team they beat and drew with. Were they in holidays too.

The real U23 team was with Siasia in Tunisia for a 2-legged international friendly

Nope.... Wrong deduction. *smiles*

The reason why Fifa created U-17s, U-20s and U-23s is part-majorly because Fifa knows that "numerous talents" existed at all age-grades (and all can't be seen at a senior world cup tournament) as can be seen by a 17-year old Pele @ the 1958 world cup.

Fifa wanted to give opportunities to talents of different age-grades to showcase themselves to the world while discovery is made along the line.

They knew that "naturally" most people won't pick a 16yr old over a 23yr old despite the talent.

That's just it.

Afterall, why don't Fifa limit the Senior world cup to players over 23yrs old alone??

Pele @ 17 ruled the world @ Sweden 1958.

Franz Beckanbaeur @ 20 excelled @ England 1966.

Michael Owen @ 18 did wonders @ France 1998.

Lukas Podolski @ 21 was a terror to most sides @ Germany 2006.

Thomas Muller top scored @ South Africa 2010 with 5 goals and 3 assists @ age 20.

So fifa's reason wasn't that U17s, U-20s and U-23s couldn't play together with their "seniors".

*smiles*

The super 6 that was a preseason series for d NPFL players hu jst came back from holidaying while it was a selection series for d Flying Eagles hu need to impress d coaches. And mind u it was d assistant coach and U23 team B dat played dat super 6. And yes, age counts alot in age grade competitions else FIFA should have allowed 23yrs olds to play with U17s.

And 1993 was how many years ago?? Please, 2013 marked a new era. The Nff U-13 and U-15 programs yielded great fruit.

And more changes are bound to occur with time. The Nff still have flaws but the foundations laid by Maigari as regards age-grade football are gradually being built upon by Pinnick and co. So changes are bound to occur many years on from 1993.

And yes!!!! Under varying degrees of different factors like Temperature, pressure and Volume....... The same reagents can yield different results experimentally.

So that "14th experiment" may still turn out different after all.

You wanna see more than 50% of our talents graduate from the U-17s to the Super Eagles? Then let the Nff apply my "rotation policy" for Manu Garba and Emmanuel Amunike.

***smiles***

I have told u dat the progression from U17 to U20 to U23 to senior is nt a Nigerian issue. It is global. Check d super powers in football, how many of their players everplayed U17?

Nope. Coach Siasia came back with the real team and played the final game that ended 3-3.

As I said, I do not believe that age talk. If not a 16 years old Esteban Cambiasso would not have been an important player for the 1997 winning Argentine World Youth Championship team.

Oruma was a star. It is just that his time collided with the emergence of one of Africa's best midfielders, Okocha. Okocha was up there with the best in the World. That did not make Oruma a poor player. Oruma did well whenever he got an opportunity. Did well for Lens And Marceille.

It is just like the clash we have in our attack with Success, Iheanacho, Awoniyi, Osimhen. If one or two becomes a Super Star, it did not mean the others were not good.

Do you remember Nigeria vs Kenya coached by Coach Monday Sinclair. Where Sinclair dropped Okocha for Oruma. He invited Chris Ohenhen and some home baser boys.

Oruma put up a mind blowing performance that many wondered what if there was no Okocha. Oruma would have been a King without Okocha in the scene. We thank God we had both.

Oruma also had some indiscipline problems that affects a lot of youngsters bur do not belittle him because he was pure brilliance.

Even at France 98, when he got his chance, he scored.

It is sad players like Oruma and Ebiede did not get their chances. Okocha was great but these guys were also brilliant.

They are always there. We saw Lucas Moura, Neymar and Oscar play for the Brazilian National team as teenagers and impressed. The likes of Aimar, Cambiasso, Tevez, Saviola, Riquelme etc joined the Argentine team as youngsters.

How old was Messi when he became a star of Barca.

First of all, you are making comments I did not say to buttress your point. I never said we should use U17 to play in the Super Eagles. We were talking of the Garba boys being able to cope with the competition. Last year, they did better than the top pro teams in Nigeria in the Super Six. They drew with the Olympic National team 3-3. I watched the game and I was impressed with both teams.

You are making it look like they do not stand a chance but it is not true. Just like Coach Siasia's call for Osimhen. If you are good enough, you are old enough. We saw it with Scholes, Pirlo, Maradona, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo De Lima, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Kaka, Canavaro, Totti, and many more.

Fani Amun finished third in the CAF AYC. I wonder how that is fumbling and Wumbling. There were only two slots and he missed it in the Semi Finals.

I said, the development of coaches will promote continuity. Coach Amun was a brilliant man, I watched a game of his where he coached 3SC for three days I think to play Raja. The game ended 3-2 in favor of Raja despite them camping for a while in Spain and 3SC were on strike because of Bonuses, Allowances and Sign on fee.

After the U17 World Cup Fani Amun won, what steps did the NFA take to build him as a coach in preparation for the U20 World Youth championship challenge?

That is why most teams fail due to lack of continuity. If not, we would continue recording low percentage of U17 winning players becoming stars.

I applaud the NFF for sticking with the coaches but I hope they build our coaches by sending them to seminars and camps overseas with some top coaches. Just like Zidane did with Guardiola.

Also old brains like Coach Monday Sinclair, Coach Westerhof should be invited in camp to help share their knowledge with these young coaches.

There are several others, I only mentioned the most popular. Why don't you carry the search yourself? Before you even said, "those players are not born every day", you said, "a 16yr old stand no chance against a 23yr old.......... Hence fifa don't play them together".

Now, I "corrected" you and gave you examples ONLY FOR YOU TO COME UP WITH THE "NOT BORN IN EVERY GENERATION EXCUSE".

IF I SHOW YOU OTHERS IN HISTORY, YOU GO STILL GREE?? ABI YOU GO COME UP WITH ANOTHER "wise old man" response. **SMILES**

Your pessimism is rearing its head again......... As always. *smiles*

And I hate repeating myself. If you read closely, I said, "that NATURALLY, most people won't pick a 16-17 year old over a 22-23 year old....."

And if you think Amuneke and his boys won't deliver @ the Caf U-23 Afcon, then think again... Much deeper and open-mindedly this time *smiles*

**but of course, it has never been done because most dont want to (or no one wanna) take that risk. Bunch of 15, 16, 17 year olds with so much talent standing up against relatively more matured 22-23yr olds MIGHT RESULT IN A PYRRHIC VICTORY FOR THE U-17s.... Yeah might. *smiles*

But never rule out "shockers". Naturally, most will never pitch bunch of 16yr olds against bunch of 22-23yr olds. BUT FOR THE FACT THAT IT'S NEVER HAPPENED DOESN'T MEAN THE U-17s don't stand a chance.

I WISH YOU WERE THERE TO WITNESS, IN LAGOS, A BUNCH OF 13-14 yr old JSS 3 students MAKING A MESS of a BUNCH OF 17-18 year old SS3 students in soccer on a "normal standard mini soccer pitch". I played that game, scored a wonder goal and set up 2 others. That game ended 7-3 in our favor.

Another time in JSS2, (before the above happening), we, a bunch of 12-13yr olds (I was 12 then), played out a 1-1 draw with one of the best SS2 classes in soccer. They had 16-17 year olds with only one or two on 15 yrs. And yeah, I was scorer again of the only goal again for my team. **smiles**

TheGoodJoe gave you an example of our Nigerian U-20 team consisting of 17-18 year olds @ the Npfl super 6 who "bested", "raped", and "annihilated" Enyimba, Kano pillars, Warri wolves, and Dolphins...... And even drew with the "main squad" of the Nigerian U-23 team.

In fact, Siasia had to bring in the main players to replace the team B guys so that he'll stand a good chance against Manu's "hungry" young boys WHO HAD NO RESPECT FOR ELDERS!!!!!!!!! **BIG SMILES**

A player or team can be good but not excel if they are not given a fair chance. Just like Mikel for instance, we saw the emergence of one of the brightest brains in the game. Without an opportunity, I mean, Mikel never played as a creative attacking midfielder through out his stay at Chelsea, Many will conclude that it was because he played in the U20 he looked good.

When Coach Keshi gave him the chance to play creatively, he excelled and gained respect from top journalist and bloggers. Bleacherreport stated Mikel traded his fame for the Success of Chelsea.

I never watched Ohenhen play for Nigeria for a long while. He was one of the promising youngsters of Nigeria that failed along the line. When Coach Monday Sinclair gave Ohenhen a small chance, it was heavenly. His touch, interchanging passes and his through pass to Wilson Oruma that qualified us for France '98 World Cup made me wonder how such a player like Ohenhen not make it. He never got a fair chance.

When Akpoborie played for the Super Eagles, despite the low score rate, his performances was one of the best I ever saw. He was good.

So these guys fail because of poor guidance. Same with our coaches. If guided well, we have the likes of Messi, Suarez, Silva, Llorente, Aguero, CR7, Neymar, Higuain, Benzema.

Osimhen gets late registration to replace Success

by Samm Audu

Saturday Nov 28, 2015. 08:48
Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed Nigeria have replaced injured Isaac Success with Victor Osimhen on their final squad to the U23 AFCON, which begins in Senegal today.

U23 AFCON PREVIEW: Nigeria vs Mali

Osimhen did not make coach Samson Siasia’s final for the U23 championship, which also doubles as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

However, following injury to Success, 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup record-breaking top scorer Osimhen was drafted to replace the Granada of Spain striker.

According to CAF, Nigeria as well as Group B rivals Egypt and Mali have made changes to their final squads.

“The changes were done in accordance with Article 66.2 of regulations of the tournament which states that a player on the final list cannot be replaced unless seriously injured at the latest 24 hours at least before the beginning of the first match of his team.

“The CAF medical committee must approve his substitution in writing, after reception and approval of a detailed medical certificate.

“CAF medical committee shall write a certificate attesting that the wound is sufficiently serious to prevent the player from participating at the U-23 AFCON and submit this certificate to the organizing committee for approval…”

U23 AFCON: Who goes to Rio?

Nigeria's Flying Eagles Won the 2015 AYC in Senegal in March. Will Nigeria now qualify for the Rio Olympics at the U-23 AFCON in Senegal?

by Samm Audu
Eight teams including hosts Senegal and historic 1996 Olympic gold medalist Nigeria will on Saturday in Dakar begin the quest to feature in next year’s Rio Olympics.

The U23 AFCON doubles as a qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics and it will produce three automatic qualifiers for the football event in Brazil, while a fourth-placed team will feature in a play-off to determine their passage to South America.

Home team Senegal, who open their campaign against South Africa on Saturday by 3pm local time in Dakar, will be buoyed by their U23s clinching Gold at the All Africa Games in September.

The Olympic Teranga Lions have been further boosted with the addition of several players led by enterprising midfielder Sidy Sarr from their U20 team who reached the knockout rounds of the FIFAU20 World Cup in New Zealand in June.

The tournament’s opening game will also put in the spotlight a highly talented South African side coached by Owen Da Gama, who has taken pains to study their opening day foes in detail.

South Africa featured at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and eliminated Zimbabwe 4-1 on aggregate to qualify for the championship finals in Senegal.

Star player is Mamelodi Sundowns exciting midfielder Keagan Dolly, who fired a brace against Zimbabwe in the qualifiers and has already been capped at full international level by Bafana Bafana.

Zambia and Tunisia are the other teams in Group A.

Zambia, who failed to reach the knockout rounds of the 2015 African Youth Championship also in Senegal, sent Cote d’Ivoire packing in the qualifying tournament via a penalty shootout after both teams failed to score in both legs.

Tunisia reversed a first leg loss in Morocco to qualify for the U23 AFCON.

Group B based in the tourists’ resort of Mbour, which is 70 kilometres away the capital city of Dakar, is a stronger field with Nigeria, Mali, Egypt and Algeria.

Amid high expectations, Nigeria’s Dream Team VI finished a disappointing third at the recent All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville, the country they incidentally went past to qualify for the CAF U23 championship.

They are led by coach Samson Siasia, who led the country to the final at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China.

At the inaugural U23 championship in Morocco, four years coach Austin Eguavoen paid dearly when he relied on foreign-based professionals, who were eventually not released by their clubs and the result was that Nigeria failed to qualify for London 2012.

Malian football is on the rise after they shone at the FIFA U20 and U17 World Cups this year and as next-door neigbours they will be very much at home in Senegal and also enjoy support from the stands as they hope to feature again at the Olympics after their last appearance in 2004.

Egypt will have full international coach Hector Cuper on the bench alongside former Al Ahly coach Hossam Al Badri to ensure they will showcase their undoubted class in Brazil next year.

Saleh Gomaa is one of several full internationals on this team, who sensationally pulled out of the AAG in Congo Brazzaville so as to concentrate on this tournament.

Algeria will be the fourth team in this pool and they prepared for the trip to West Africa by losing 2-0 to Tunisia in Tunis.

Their opening match against fellow Maghreb country Egypt will go a long way in determining how they will fare in Senegal.

Nigeria foes Egypt, Mali suffer major injury blows

Egypt Saleh Gomaa ruled out of U-23 AFCON

Nigeria’s U23 AFCON Group B rivals Mali and Egypt have suffered major injury blows forcing them to make late replacements to their final squad.

Egypt star midfielder Saleh Gomaa, whose fitness has been in doubt for over a week, has been ruled out of the competition after suffering a muscle tear after it was initially thought the problem was a minor strain.

Al Ahly star Gomaa, who is a full international, has now been replaced by Mohamed Metwally.

Egypt have also had to substitute Ismaily’s Emad Hamdy Ibrahim with Mamdouh Khaled El Sayed.

Mali have also had to replace forward Moussa Doumbia from Russian outfit FC Rostov after he suffered a thigh injury in a warm-up against Senegal.

He has been replaced by COB winger Abdoulaye Diarra, who was the biggest omission of the 21-man list after featuring in the qualifiers.

Several of them actually........*smiles* By Soccer super powers, I'm sure you mean the likes of Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, The Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Uruguay, France,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, right?

But wait o.........

Could the likes of Pele, Eusebio, Bobby charlton, Raymond kopa, George best, ferenc puskas, Alfredo di stefano, Lev yashin, George banks,Karl-heinz Rummenigge, Jairzinho, Luis Alberto perreira, Bobby Moore, Mario Zagallo, Mario Kempes, Johannes Cruyff, Gerd Muller, Vava, Kenny Dalglish, etc, etc, etc have played the U-17s when it only began in 1985!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even Maradona featured in a fifa age-grade tournament in 1979 (the very first U-20 tournament) by which time there was still no U-17 tournament.

Ever since the U-17s began, some major stars of several of the "FOOTBALL SUPER POWERS" were "BORN" as follows:

-Gianliugi Buffon, Italy (1993)
-Alessandro Del pierro, Italy (1991)
-Pablo Aimar, Argentina (1995)
-Francesco Totti, Italy (1993)

Nigeria AFCON rivals Egypt, Algeria shun foreign pros

Egypt's Pharaohs U23

Algeria and Egypt are the teams in Group B of the U23 AFCON who have not listed any overseas-based player on their final 21-man squads for the championship.

USMA dominate the Algeria squad with five players with Aso Chlef and Etoile Setif providing three players each.

As usual Al Ahly and Zamalek dominate the Egyptian selection.

Nigeria have three overseas-based professionals, while Mali are in Senegal with as many as nine players, who play outside their home country.

The pros include defender Kevin Moussa Traore from German second division side Karlsruhe, striker Adama Niane from French Ligue 1 side Nantes and Souleymane Sissoko from top Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.

Osimhen takes over Success No 9 jersey

Osimhen (right) against Mali in the Finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in chile. He will wear his favourite No. 9 Shirt at the U-23 AFCON

As a result of his late registration for the U23 AFCON, U17 World Cup hotshot Victor Osimhen will wear the Number 9 shirt the player he has replaced would have worn.

Osimhen also wore No 9 shirt to score record-breaking 10 goals at the recent U17 World Cup in Chile.

Granada forward Isaac Success was replaced by Osimhen after Nigeria proved he has suffered a major injury that will stop him from the U23 AFCON, which starts today in Dakar, Senegal.

Incidentally, both strikers hail from Edo State.

Skipper Azubuike Okechukwu, who is based in Turkey, will maintain his favourite jersey number 14, while Taiwo Awoniyi keeps his No 18 shirt, which he also won when he led the Flying Eagles to win the African Youth Championship in Senegal in March.

Riyaad Norodien
Norodien upbeat ahead of Senegal opener

Riyaad Norodien

Ahead of their opening 2015 CAF Championship match against Senegal on Saturday, South African U23 midfielder Riyaad Norodien believes they are motivated by the idea of Rio 2016.

The Ajax Cape Town rising star was speaking to a local website as they finalise their preparations for the clash saying they have to use their South African style approach.

"Winning and going to Rio is the motivation. But we are going to a different environment where we have to do the business," Norodien said.

"That demands that we stick together as a team. We should not be afraid to open up to one another. We have to be a unit, back each other up and attack or defend as a pack.”

In relation to their approach, the midfielder adds that going for a style they know best will help the team to win games.

"We also have to hit them with our own Mzansi football. We are a uniquely talented side and those qualities must be used,” adds the player.

“Rio will take us to the next level. All we need is the belief.

"We have a bright squad that can get there and pull off something big. I believe that if some do not fall by the wayside, we can go on to do great things.”

Three teams who finish on top will march to Rio and Owen Da Gama’s team is determined to reach Brazil to become the second generation of Under 23 stars to make it to the showpiece.

The match is scheduled to get underway in Dakar on Saturday, 28 November at 15:00 (SA Time).

Akpom thrilled Wenger says he has Arsenal future

Chuba Akpom assured by Wenger

Nigerian-born England youth international Chuba Akpom has revealed he has been encouraged by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that he has a future at The Emirates.

The 20-year-old striker is currently on loan at Hull City to get more playing time for first team experience.

“It’s always nice to know that he (Wenger) thinks I’ve got a first team future there,” said Apom.

“That’s where I want to play at the end of the day. For someone like Arsene Wenger to say that I’ve got a big chance at Arsenal, it must mean something.

“He [Wenger] said I could stay there if I want, be involved and get some cameos, or I could go out and play solid games. That’s what I’m doing now. I chose to go out and play because I need to get as much game-time and as much experience as possible.”

Akpom started out with the Arsenal youth in 2002 and was promoted to main team in 2013.

He has played on loan at Brentford, Coventry City and Nottingham Forest.

Victor Osimhen

By Shina Oludare

The ex-international feels the forward’s inexperience is not necessarily a problem and says he can flourish in the same way as Pele and Neymar

Former Nigeria captain Christian Chukwu has dismissed the suggestion that Golden Eaglets’ star Victor Osimhen is currently too young to succeed with the Nigeria U23 team.

The 2015 Fifa U17 golden boot and silver ball winner made Samson Siasia’s 21-man squad to the African U23 Championship in Senegal.

And Chukwu feels that the 16-year-old defenders nightmare has what it takes to with the Dream Team VI in spite of his lack of experience at the highest level.

“Osimhen is a talented player and he is not too young to play in the Under-23 team,” Chukwu told Punch.

“Many world-class players began at a very young age. Pele and Neymar started playing for the Brazilian senior national team when they were very young.

“Osimhen is not even too young to play in the Super Eagles. The Under 23 team is a good place for him to develop and I believe his participation in the tournament (Senegal 2015) will do him a lot of good as well as helping the team.”

The former Super Eagles head coach also advised the Nigeria U23 team to a win their first match against Mali on Sunday to put them in a good position for the title challenge.

“The first match of any competition is very important if the team wants to go far.

“ It helps to avoid the trouble of resulting to permutations to leave the group and it also eases pressure off a team in the other matches,” he concluded.

Nigeria U-23 coach Samson Siasia's mother released
By Oluwashina Okeleji

The mother of Nigeria Under-23 coach Samson Siasia has been released after being kidnapped by gunmen 12 days ago.

Three kidnappers took Ogere Siasia from the family home in Bayelsa state in the oil-rich Niger Delta, where kidnappings for ransom are frequent.

Siasia, who is in Senegal with his squad for the Confederation of African Football Under-23 Championship, told the BBC he was happy his mother had been freed safely and reunited with her family.

“It's been a crazy two weeks, but I would like to say thank you to the NFF and everyone involved in the safe return of my mother”

Samson Siasia Nigeria U-23s coach

"We've already spoken and she's happy to be home," he told BBC Sport.

"It's been a crazy two weeks, but I would like to say thank you to the NFF and everyone involved in the safe return of my mother.

"Now I can completely focus on the business here, doing well at this tournament would be a perfect way to thank Nigerians for their love."

The kidnappers had initially demanded 150 million naira (US$750,000), but subsequently reduced their demand to 50 million naira (US$250,000), and 35 million naira (US$175,000) for the release of the 72-year-old.

Although Mrs Siasia was released early on Saturday, it is not clear if a ransom was paid.

Police in Bayelsa said the hunt for the kidnappers was still on.

Kidnapping, often for ransom, is common in parts of Nigeria and footballers' families are increasingly becoming targets.

International defender Onyekachi Apam was kidnapped on 31 December 2007 in the south-eastern city of Enugu by armed men who took his car before releasing him.

Nornu Yobo, elder brother of former Everton and Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo, was famously kidnapped in 2008 in oil-rich Port Harcourt.

Nornu was released after 10 days but it was never made clear whether a ransom was paid.

Former international Christian Obodo was abducted in Warri, southern Nigeria, in June 2012. He was rescued by the police twenty-four hours later.

A year earlier, the father of Nigerian midfielder and Chelsea player John Obi Mikel was kidnapped in Jos, central Nigeria.

Nigerian police, however, rescued Michael Ob

Eguma tips U23s for Afcon glory
by Humphrey Njoku

Stanley Eguma

Former Nigeria Under-23 team assistant coach Stanley Eguma has tipped the side to claim Olympic ticket at the ongoing Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.

The Nigerian representatives will open their qualification ticket account against Mali on Sunday at the Stade Caroline Faye in M’Bour.

Eguma said the coaching crew acted cautiously and rightly with its decision to build the team almost wholly around the domestic players.

“I think with the situation on the ground Nigeria have a bright chance to pick up a Olympic ticket in Senegal.

“Coach Samson Siasia has kept a crop of players mostly around the home-based lads who overtime has blended perfectly well.

“That’s quite key for the side to excel in the championship unlike our own time that we built the team around foreign professionals only to discover lately that none of them would be available for the championship in Morocco and that was our greatest undoing.

“Siasia negotiated with the clubs of the few players coming from outside the nation’s shores and that’s why he did not have any issue with the release of Junior Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi among others.

“Siasia too has been successful with the Under-20s and Under-23s and has the quality material to win the championship and go to the Olympics.

“The training tour of Gambia equally helped the team greatly for the challenges in Senegal. I think they are 95 percent ready to do well.

“Nigerians will only do the team a lot of good with steady prayers throughout the duration of the championship,” said the head coach of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Dolphins to supersport.com.

Nigeria’s two other group matches will be against the North African giants Egypt and Algeria on Wednesday and Friday respectively in M’Bour and Dakar.

Top three finishers at the eight-team championship in Senegal will qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

My friend don't forget d root of this argument.Nobody is saying d FIFA U17 WC has nt produced players. Dnt deviate from d argument. From d current crop of players representing Brazil, Spain, Holland, Argentina and Germany tell me d % of players dat came through from d U17. The fact remains dat MOST players from U17 all over d world, Nigeria inclusive, dnt end up making a mark at senior level. If u chose to wish dat most or all of Manu's U17 boys will play at senior level u are free. But I am jst telling u dat only few of them "MAY" end up playing for Nigeria at senior level. MOST will nt make a mark at d senior level.

Why Nigeria must qualify for 2016 Olympic men’s football event

Nigeria U23 team

By Tunde Eludini
The Nigeria U23 team, the Dream Team VI, will be kick-starting their quest for a berth at next year’s Rio Olympic Games with their opening group game at the Africa U23 Cup of Nations against Mali on Sunday.

After Coach Austin Eguavoen failed to qualify Nigeria for the men’s football event of the 2012 London Olympics, the onus is now on Coach Samson Siasia to get Nigeria back to the stage of the biggest multi sports events in the world.

Patchy Preparation
While the build-up by Nigeria to the Africa U23 Cup of Nations could indeed have been much better, there would be no excuse for the Dream Team VI not to secure one of the three tickets up for grabs in Senegal.

A longer route for a playoff will be available for the fourth placed team in Senegal
The Nigeria U23 team were in Gambia for a 10-day training camp where they also played three quality friendly games; and they were unbeaten in all.

Though Coach Siasia could not lay his hands on all the players he would have love to use in Senegal, the Nigeria U23 Head Coach still has enough firepower to make the minimum requirement of finishing in top three amongst the eight teams on parade in Senegal.

Setback for foes
Unfortunately, it has not been the best of times for Nigeria’s U23 AFCON Group B rivals Mali and Egypt who both suffered major injury blows forcing them to make late replacements to their final squad.

Egypt’s star midfielder, Saleh Gomaa, whose fitness has been in doubt for over a week, has been ruled out of the competition after suffering a muscle tear after it was initially thought the problem was a minor strain.

Al Ahly star Gomaa, who is a full international, has now been replaced by Mohamed Metwally.

Egypt have also had to substitute Ismaily’s Emad Hamdy Ibrahim with Mamdouh Khaled El Sayed.

On their part, Mali have also had to replace forward Moussa Doumbia from Russian outfit FC Rostov after he suffered a thigh injury in a warm-up against Senegal.

He has been replaced by COB winger Abdoulaye Diarra, who was the biggest omission of the 21-man list after featuring in the qualifiers.

Tricky opponents
Regardless of the setback, Nigeria will still need to be cautious against their tricky group opponents; Mali and Egypt as many believe they are actually no minnows in the roster of eight teams on parade at this year’s Africa U23 Cup of Nations.

It’s no secret that Malian football is on the rise after they shone at the FIFA U20 and U17 World Cups, their proximity to Senegal should also count for something as they will be guaranteed much support from the stands.

Mali last featured at the Olympics in Athens 2004 and they gladly want a return to Rio this term.

For Egypt, the depth of manpower on the bench could be their greatest strength as the Junior Pharaohs will have full international coach Hector Cuper on the bench alongside former Al Ahly coach Hossam Al Badri to ensure they will showcase their undoubted class in Brazil next year.

Glamorous record
Nigeria prides itself as the first sub Saharan country to win gold at the Olympics after the heroics of the 1996 Olympics team under Jo Bonfere.

Interestingly, Coach Siasia was in charge of the last Nigeria team to the Olympics and it was in Beijing 2008 when Nigeria settled for Silver after losing to Argentina in the final.

TheGoodJoe:

Oruma also had some indiscipline problems
that affects a lot of youngsters bur do not belittle him because he was pure brilliance.

Even at France 98, when he got his chance, he scored.

It is sad players like Oruma and Ebiede did not get their chances. Okocha was great but these guys were also brilliant.
Anyone here who is old enough to have watched Oruma play for the NT and in his club would allude to the fact that Oruma was a great player. When it comes to skills, Oruma was almost as good as Okocha. I was privileged to watch Oruma play... What did he not do? Slide rule passing, Outrageous dummies, ball juggling, steps overs, flip-flap, back heels, even marseilles roulette.

At the bolded... that was the difference... He lacked some discipline...
It only proves that any talent without discipline is protem at best.
Some benign personality and attitudinal problems can inhibit career growth.

For the records, Oruma is one of the most skillful players to have emanated from Africa... Very few can do what he did with his feet...

Siasia Thanks Nigerians After Mother’s Release, Promises Olympic Ticket

By James Agberebi:
Nigeria U-23s coach Samson Siasia has expressed his joy following the release of his mother Mrs Ogere Siasia, who was kidnapped two weeks ago.

The release of Siasia’s mother was confirmed by the family and the police on Saturday.

According to thenff.com, an elated Siasia thanked everyone who showed support, promising to qualify Nigeria for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

“Words can’t express how I feel, all I want to say here is thank you to all Nigerians especially the NFF who stood by me amd my family in our trying times. It has not been easy but by His grace we have overcome,” Siasia said.

“For me all I can say now is, based on the support shown me and my family, all I can do to repay Nigerians is to go out there and pick an Olympic ticket for the country.”

When asked whether any ransom was paid, Siasia said he is not in the know, but as long as his mother is back home, his joy has no limit.

The U-23 Eagles will kick off their campaign at the CAF U-23 Cup of Nations against Mali in Mbour on Sunday.

The other two teams in their group are Egypt and Algeria.

I thought I read somewhere that isaac success was injured that was why Victor " the legend killer" was recalled and for victor to be recalled evidences or records were supposed to be given to CAF on the state or degree of injury to ascertain if isaac success will not recover before the end of the tournament so as to reinstate victor to the team... Probably I will have to take yeast and food rich in vitamin A, my eyes have started playing tricks on me with what I'm reading.... Isaac success is playing nw probably I'm seeing his twin brother.
