Oliseh Backs Home-Based Oboarakpo To Challenge Oboabona, Omeruo

By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh believes Abia Warriors‎ centre-back, Austin Oboarakpo, is good enough for the main team just as he thinks some other home-based players need more confidence to perform at an optimal level.

Oliseh, who is expected to name his provisional squad for the 2016 African Nations Championship in Rwanda in a fortnight, says the defender has shown enough zest to stake a claim for a place in the team ahead of the Europe-based defenders in the squad like Godfrey Oboabona and Kenneth Omeruo.

“He’s one defender that keeps others on their toes, which is good for the team and he’s showing he’s ready to stake a claim for place in the team,” Oliseh told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Oboarakpo, who has two international caps and started the World Cup qualifier against Swaziland in Port Harcourt for the main Super Eagles‎, is expected to be included in Oliseh’s squad for CHAN.

The Home Eagles are drawn against Tunisia, Niger and Guinea in Group C of the competition.

Watford Manager: Ighalo, Deeney Have ‘Amazing Connection’

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has heaped praises on the striking partnership of Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney.

Both strikers were on target on Saturday as Watford secured a 3-2 win against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Deeney and Ighalo have scored 12 of Watford’s 15 Premier League goals this season and Flores calls the strikers’ partnership an “amazing connection”.

The Nigerian international netted the opener of the Hornets’ 3-2 victory over Aston Villa which was his eighth of the season while Deeney headed home the visitors’ decisive third.

Defences have struggled to contain the duo all season and after Saturday’s victory a pleased Flores was full of praise for pair.

“It is an amazing connection they have,” the Spaniard said. “We have the possibility of playing different styles with Deeney and Ighalo. We can play long ball or we can play with the ball on the floor.

“They are not strikers who only play well if they score. It is amazing what they do in defence.

They put in so much effort to reduce space and that is why we always defend with 11 players.”

Moses: West Ham Should Recover Fast In December Fixtures

Nigeria and West Ham winger, Victor Moses has tasked his club to brace up for the crucial fixtures of the December and salvage some points to better the fortunes of the club.

Moses is worried by the the inability of West Ham to a win a game in four matches. And after Sunday's 1-1 draw with West Brom, the loanee from Chelsea alerts the Hammers to put up a winning spirit and get ready for the December hostilities.

In the the December tight schedule, West Ham have five battles to do; against Manchester United, Stoke City, Swansea City, Aston Villa, and Southampton.

“Around Christmas with all the fixtures, I think that’s when a lot of seasons are decided. We need to recover from each game quickly; I think we’ve got enough quality to maintain our position," 366football.com quotes Moses as saying.

"But Christmas will be the crucial time, wherever we are by early January is unlikely to change too much by May.”

On whether or not he would love a return to Chelsea in the January transfer window, Moses insists he is loving it at West Ham.

Moses reiterates: “I’m really enjoying my football here at West Ham, all the players, the manager, coaches and staff are all good people. I just want to play football, as long as I’m out there on the field, I’m happy. I enjoy what I do and that’s the most important thing.

“To be honest, moving around clubs is just part of football, you’ve got to expect it really. It’s not that hard to gel with a new group of players, you start bonding from the first day. We’re all footballers so we have a similar mentality and focus to our roles.
Like I said, I’m really enjoying my football.

“I learnt a lot from each club I’ve played for, now I’m fully committed to West Ham and I want us to do as well as possible.”

“Slaven is a great manager; he’s played here before so he understands West Ham but also English football. He understands what it is like to be a player which is very important; he wants us to enjoy ourselves as much as possible and not to worry about making mistakes. Players do make mistakes, that’s a part of football but he wants us to be adventurous and try things.

“We weren’t expecting to get off to such a good start, but we always believed we could beat the big teams.

Capital One Cup: Iheanacho Battles Aluko For Semi-Final Slot

By James Agberebi:
The quarter-final stage of the Capital One Cup takes place Tuesday and Wednesday this week with eight teams slugging it out for places in the last four.

On Tuesday, Manchester City will entertain Championship side Hull City at the Etihad Stadium, and Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho should feature for the Citizens.

Iheanacho, who was benched in City's weekend clash against Southampton on Saturday in the league, was instrumental in their 5-1 round of 16 win against Crystal Palace. The 19-year-old scored a goal and provided two assists in the emphatic win against Palace.

Hull City will hope to bounce back from their 2-0 home loss to Derby County in Friday's Championship clash. The trio of Sone Aluko, Chuba Akpom and Moses Odubajo, who were in action against Derby, are expected to play a part against City on Tuesday.

The 2014 FA Cup finalists saw off high-flying Leicester City on penalty shootout in the last round after regulation time ended 1-1.

At the Britannia Stadium, Stoke City will welcome conquerors of Arsenal in the previous round, Sheffield Wednesday.

To get to this stage, the Potters had to rely on penalties to see out holders Chelsea despite having a player sent off.

In action against Chelsea on the night was Osaze Odemwingie, who converted one of the spot kicks but has since not featured in Stoke's last four league games.

The other fixture for Tuesday will see Middlesbrough play host to Everton at the Riverside. While the only game on Wednesday is between Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary's Stadium.

"Couldn't hold on to the lead, it was our wish. Thanks again for the never-ending support," Echiejile wrote via his handle ‏on Monday.

Marseille opened scoring through Romain Alessandrini in the 12th minute but an Almamy Toure brace gave Monaco a 2-1 lead at half time.

Oliseh Proposes Tanzania Camp For CHAN Preparation

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has proposed Tanzania camp for Nigeria's home-based team preparatory for the 2016 Championship for African Nations in Rwanda.

Complete Sports gathered that Oliseh chose to have the team camp in Tanzania to acclimatise to the weather which is similar with that of Rwanda and to avoid distraction that comes with camping in Nigeria before and during the Christmas period.

An informed and reliable NFF source revealed that Oliseh also wants the team to open camp in Abuja on December 14 and if he gets the approval of the Glass House will leave for Dar es Salam on December 22.

Complete Sports source also informed that the Super Eagles coach has also requested to travel to Tanzania with 30 players that will be reduced to 21 before the championship in which Nigeria finshed third last time when South Africa hosted.

When Complete Sports sought for confirmation of the planned camping in Tanzania, Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye denied knowledge of such move, directing this reporter to the NFF or Oliseh.

NFF Assistant director of communications Ademola Olajire also said he does not know about any programme from Oliseh.

RIYAD MAHREZ

Leicester City continued to be a difficult opponent as the Foxes on Saturday held Louis van Gaal's men to a 1-1 draw at the King's Power Stadium.

Hamstring Injury Rules Peter Odemwingie Out Of Capital Cup Clash Against Sheffield

Peter Odemwingie will miss Stoke City’s Capital One Cup Quarter-Final tie against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday due to injury.

The 34 - year - old recently sat out games against Southampton and Sunderland in the Premier League and it has now come to light that the experienced striker is battling a hamstring complaint.

If his appearance in an Under 21 Premier League fixture against Fulham on September 12 is not thrown into the mix, the Nigeria national - teamer has been involved in 4 games this season for the Potters in all competitions, racking up a meager 133 minutes of game time in the process.

Odemwingie was in action against Fulham in the third round of the Capital Cup and assisted Stoke City knock out Chelsea in the fourth round and would have made his sixth appearance in the competition if he was fit enough to face Sheffield Wednesday.

His contract with Stoke City will run out at the end of the 2015 - 16 season.

Fanendo Adi Says FC Dallas Put Up A Fight Against Portland Timbers

Portland Timbers survived a late scare to advance to the final of the MLS Cup Final after playing out a 2 - 2 draw with FC Dallas in the second leg of their Western Conference Championship series.

Nigerian striker Fanendo Adi netted his 18th goal in the MLS this term in the 54th minute but the home team turned the screw, scoring through Ryan Hollingshead and Blas Perez before Lucas Santiago Melano restored parity for Timbers in the 90th minute.

Adi was delighted that the Oregon - based outfit qualified for the final but admitted that Dallas gave them a run for their money.

“It was a great game. We came in believing it was going to be a tough one. Dallas was going to give us a tough one, and they did,” Fanendo Adi told timbers.com.

“We’re not surprised with what they came with, because we expected them to come very strong.

“For us, it was to try and get a goal and push forward. When we got the second goal we knew it put us in the Cup.”

Portland Timbers will take on Columbus Crew on December 6 in the MLS Cup final to be staged at MAPFRE Stadium, Columbus, Ohio.

Hope Akpan Aims To Score More Goals For Blackburn Rovers

After opening his Blackburn Rovers goalscoring account last weekend, Hope Akpan is confident that he can score more goals for the club.

The Nigeria international had not scored a goal in the league for close to two years before netting in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, and was initially wrongly credited with a goal against Preston North End.

“I was very pleased to get my first goal,” said Akpan , according to Lancashire Telegraph.

“I did a good job of convincing everyone I scored last week so it’s good to have got off the mark.

“Now the aim has got to be to get a few more before the end of the season. I have proved in the past that when I’ve got one, I can go on to get a few. ”

A defensive midfielder by trade, Hope Akpan found the net eight times while on the books of Crawley Town but managed only one goal in the two and a half years he spent at Reading.

Omeruo to quit Chelsea for 5 million pounds

Omeruo and Chelsea boss Mourinho - The defender likely to be sold in the summer

by Samm Audu
Turkish club Kasimpasa are set to fork out five million pounds to sign Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo by the summer when his Chelsea contract will have only a year to go.

Top sources revealed that Kasimpasa are satisfied with the Nigeria international defender, who is on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea.

Omeruo, 22, has made eight appearances for Istanbul club Kasimpasa, who are sixth on the table with 20 points from 13 matches, 10 points adrift of leaders Fenerbache.

“Kasimpasa are very satisfied with Kenneth and they are most likely to active the player’s release clause at Chelsea which is put at between four and five million pounds,” a close source informed.

“His contract will have only a year left by next June and it is expected Chelsea will let him go for a fee by then rather than lose him for nothing thereafter.”

But for injuries, the Chelsea loanee would have been an ever-present for his current club.

He only returned to action this past weekend in a 2-2 draw with Galatasaray after a relapse of a hamstring injury.

Nigeria shop for 'heavyweight' coaches after Eagles struggle in front of goal

Eagles striker Ighalo (left) against Swaziland recently

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed the country is shopping for “heavyweight” coaches to help solve the Super Eagles lack of goals under coach Sunday Oliseh.

Nigeria have managed only four goals in five competitive matches since Oliseh took charge of the three-time African champions
“Our coach (Sunday Oliseh) is a very sound coach, but we have to develop a way to score goals and that is why we are looking at some heavyweight coaches to help us in this regard,” NFF boss Pinnick said.

Oliseh remains unbeaten in competitive matches, but most Nigerians are still not convinced he is the man to lead the country out of the woods because their performances have been labored against the likes of Swaziland and Tanzania.

Next year will most certainly test the capability of Oliseh, a former Eagles skipper and television pundit, as Nigeria will battle Egypt for a place at the 2017 AFCON in Gabon as well as begin their qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria's best players not in national teams - Omeruo adviser

Action from the Eurosoccer Vision Tournament in Abuja between Amunike Academy and FCT Sports

Adviser to Nigeria international Kenneth Omeruo has stated that the country is overflowing with natural talent but because of poor scouting the best players often do not get a chance to represent their country at the various national teams.

Holland-based Chika Akujobi said it was because of this fact that his company staged a scouting tournament in Abuja this week.

“I can boldly say that in many instances, it is not the best players who get to play for the various national teams in Nigeria. There are many better players who were not scouted and so do not get to play for their country,” argued Akujobi, who played professionally in Germany and Holland before bagging his coaching badges in Holland, where he is based.

"There are better young players than Kelechi Iheanachos and Victor Osimhens, but they are yet to get their chance here in Nigeria.

“The scouting tournament I did in Abuja has further underlined this fact – many gifted players are only waiting to be discovered.

“All we need do now is to organise these scouting programmes well and then we could really compete with the likes of Brazil and Argentina in exporting football talent overseas.”

However, Akujobi is quick to warn that despite the natural talent in the country, the coaches have a lot of work to prepare these players tactically.

“We have to work on tactics if these technically gifted players who abound in this country are to stand a chance in Europe. It’s not just about what you can do with the ball, but also what you do when you do not have the ball.”

Ighalo, Ayew in EPL award shortlist

Odion Ighalo Scores for Watford vs Aston Villa
Nigeria international Odion Ighalo, Andre Ayew of Ghana, Yannick Bolasie from DR Congo and Arouna Kone from Cote d’Ivoire are on a shortlist for the November African Players awards in the English Premier League.

Ighalo won the award by an overwhelming majority in October, and, according to a release by New African Soccer, he seemed to “continue where he left off in October, playing well enough to earn him a place in the shortlist for November”.

The Nigerian international played every minute of Watford’s November fixtures, which was a difficult month for them given the home loss to Manchester United and the away loss to Leicester City.

But according to awards director Tunde Adelakun, “Ighalo shone through these games and deserves his place on the shortlist”.

Another old face in the shortlist was August winner, Ghana’s Swansea City star Andre Ayew. Again, Ayew’s Swansea team are going through a rough patch in the League and it showed in November but the Ghanaian’s quality still showed through it all, and again, the award organisers felt it worthy of a place in the shortlist.

In the release, the two obvious stars of the show were Crystal Palace’s Congolese winger Yannick Bolasie with a stunning performance in his team’s 2-1 away win at Liverpool and his double strike against Newcastle.

But not only that, according to Adelakun, “Bolas has been a thorn in many defences all season and he has proved a consistency that really deserves to be mentioned and praised”.

Ivorian Arouna Kone of Everton makes up the quartet of shortlisted players. He has featured prominently in his team’s resurgence in November, starting with an emphatic hat-trick in their 6-2 drubbing of Sunderland.

New African Soccer believes that the 32-year-old, who made a remarkable recovery after injury that put him out for over a year, was one of the league’s most consistent performers this month.

The award winner will be announced shortly.

Hull City Fans Blast Akpom, Aluko Over Man City Defeat

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Hull City were defeated 4-1 by Premier League leaders Manchester City on Tuesday night in one of the quarter-finals game of the Capital One Cup at the Etihad but despite the resilience shown overall by the Hull City players, their fans are lambasting the performance of the Nigerian duo of Sone Aluko and Chuba Akpom.

Some of the Tigers' fans who expressed their dismay on Twitter especially at the display of England youth international, Akpom, who is born of Nigerian parents, believe he has not been a good loan acquisition.

Matt Hornshaw, a Hull fan, wrote: "Feeble effort from Aluko, Akpom, Elmo #hcafc."

Another fan, Ricky, focused solely on Akpom's poor display, writing: "Akpom is looking like a boy in a man's body. But when we pass the ball on the ground, we're quietly effective."

Dan was biting in his criticism of the Nigerians, adding: "Carrying deadweight, off. Aluko, Taylor off. Akpom just whinging about everything. A complete lack of endeavour across the pitch."

Adam saw positives, but he hit Aluko and Akpom hard, writing: "Shows we have strength in depth. Taylor, Aluko, Akpom, Hayden haven't shown anything to me."

Rob Gillespie feels Hull will be better off without Akpom. The disappointed Hull fan wrote: "Hate to say this, but send Akpom back. Doesn't have the passion or the hunger."

Aluko has played for the Super Eagles but Akpom is undecided where his international future lies.

The third player of Nigerian descent in action on Tuesday night, Moses Odubanjo, who played at right-back, had a good performance so escaped the criticisms of the fans.

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to score Manchester City's second goal when he steered the ball despite the challenges of three defenders.

How do the Hull fans expect a brilliant display from Aluko when he chose to park the bus. There is no way a striker can cope and do well against a pressing Man City who are more in numbers.
