The most accurate post on this matter so far. Most of all the other submissions on this thread is based mostly on inaccurate accounts, hearsays, and self-serving and twisted reports retold so much to have become fact.
According to the accounts of Madiebo, Alabi-Isama and Oyewole, active participants in the war, these shady arms black market traders dumped all th WW2 leftovers they could find in the country on either side of the fighting. Biafra was shortchanged more in that a lot of incomplete or incompatible weapons were dumped on them- rifles and bullets that were not its specification; mortars and artillery pieces without firing pins...etc.

What could they do with all these incompatible junks? They went ahead to knock some down and weld and riveted metals parts to make them usable. Others were put up for reverse engineering. Much of it was just alterations to make then useful, same as our mechanics and fabricators of today attempt.

There was no particular inventions in military hardware by the Biafrans.

kjhova:
there is too much knowledge gap in this country that you wonder what people do with all that voluminous data they buy from the TELCOs. The Nigerian Civil War remains a badly told story 36 years after the last shot was fired. War is a bad thing and it only brings forth the evil in us all. There's are never saints nor are there ever angels. just evil and evil all through. These generation should not make the mistake of glorifying the many evils of the old days. Don't wish unto yourselves what you cannot handle. Refer to Syria and South Sudan for your repost. Nobody will be a hero should we make Allepos or Homs or Fallujas of Enugu or Ibadan or Kaduna. See how much harm rag tag bunches like BH and the so-called Avengers have caused us all already.

In the 60's, Nigeria was a poor, low technology and largely illiterate society. We had the few universities, the groundnut pyramids, cocoa bags, rubber, timber, tin and the developing oil industry, but we were still largely behind times and pretty new to the international community. By global standards, our army was also not of much value. Our armed forces distinguished itself in Katanga, and Uganda in that era but then again his accolade was more as peace keepers rather than as a fighting forces. However, when our leaders found a way to lead us into war, a great chunk of the idling and wasting WW2 materiel of a few European powers found their way into the hands of both sides of the war. Many shady European businessmen turned into gun runners piling stock & stock of aging arsenal from London to Paris to Moscow to Rome to Berlin to Bonn to Porto via Cairo and Libreville to the ultimate destination which was either Lagos or Ulli. It really didn't matter to these killers who won, be it Nigeria or the rebels; it was all about their greed to make money. The British and American governments staked their policy on the believe that Nigeria will win so therefore funded the winning side to curry favours later. The Russians & East Germans did their bit to aid the rebels, not out of interest in the rebel cause but as the prevailing policy of the cold war era. The French also aided Biafra a bit in the feint hope that should the Anglo-Americans loose interest in the whole business, they can benefit from their position later. The Egyptian Airforce was in the pocket of the Brits and were deployed considerably on the Nigerian side.

Nigeria was wealthier than the rebels and had more legitimacy to buy arms in the international market. Therefore, before and during the war, Nigeria remained far better equipped than the rebels. The important thing the rebels had on their side were that the war was being fought in their backyard so they knew the terrain better. Also Radio Biafra's successful propaganda made them believe that surrendering to the Nigerians meant horrible torture and death. With backs pushed to the wall, poorly armed guys were willing to fight to death against all odds. This war was a fight that Biafra was always going to loose from day one. It has even been suggested in some quarters that the Nigerians deliberately prolonged the war as a matter of High Command policy to prolong the terrible suffering of the rebels.

Did the Biafrans locally produce weapons during the war? Yes but nothing of the supposed sophistication that the OP suggested. Necessity is the mother of all inventions so as rhe Biafrans were cut out of the international market due to the biting blockade and the lack of cash, they resorted to home based fabrications. The pictures the OP posted are all WW2 materiel which mostly 30 years old models when our war started. Non of the two sides had state of the art equipment. However the rebels did truly produce the interesting ogbunigwe classes of bombs, missiles and landmines locally. Still these were mostly what we today call IEDs. The shrapnel attached tobthe so-called coffin ogbunigwe was nothing more than ball bearings and nails which however still carry so much devastation to the enemy if exploded in the midst of a crowded company. My point does not remove from the brilliance and ingenuity of the rebels but the story must not be retold with undeserved glorification lest we elevate madness to class.

Do we want to fight a war again? Do you want a Syria in the heart of Africa?

I wish you our young people well.

Nigga, wy would I lie about a TOPIC LINK THERE FOR ALL TO SEE. You lots did NOTHING but deluded yourself as you are know to do with screaming of how you're ICT advanced in the country and the none yolobas mocked the living shit out of una. Similar to how you lots self deluded an self claimed "most educated", "most developed", "most sophisificated" with nothing to back una up on. The inferiority complex of you yolobas is ridiculously high till the point it's in psychological level. No f2king wonder you lots are desperate for others to tout your horn and NOBODY have ever done it.

While I'm at it

Is this the so called "70% Yoloba ICT" you kept screaming about? Are you for real? The most hilarious of it all is the drone guy. Going by the picture, it's beyond obvious this is your typical drone bought online that you have to assemble and this mofo is trying to imply he "made it". grin grin grin grin grin
In addition to the "Amphibian jet car"..nigga, ARE YOU STUPID? Infact, I triple dare you, post a video or anything where you someone driving that. Hell post a video of the "creator" testing that car..I dare you.

If that's the shit that's supposed 70% Yoloba ICT then no wonder you've been desperate for attention in any igbo threads where none igbos praise igbos. No f2king wonder.

If you consider those shit up there as "inventions that made yoloba 70% ICT crap" , we might as well consider all these from Igbo boys that has not even graduated from high school and some are still in primary school as " "inventions that made igbo 70% ICT crap". What a joke

BTW: the only decent thing you posted up there worthwhile is the smartphone individual and that's nothing at that. Anyone with a computer engineering degree can manufacture a freaking phone. Hell I have a freaking classmate who uses a smartphone he made himself from scratch.
It's like me posting this
http://guardian.ng/news/apple-buys-a-nigerian-owned-ict-firm-for-1-billion/
and thumbing my chest as "Igbo proof of being technological advance".

Your inferiority complex and desperation to be ego stroked is Hilarious but sad at the same time to watch.

While Igbos are saying Dr. Samuel Achilefu that invented a cancer goggles and even won awards on it, this one is here showing me a jet car that noone has ever seen driving before and a dude trying to pass off drones he bought as something he made.

I'm going to ask it again, how come your government ran to a car manufacturing company to help it's military than going to the "70% Yoloba ICT"? How come NOBODY has ever talked about the so called "70% Yoloba ICT"?

This is what the interviewer ...Victor Ekwealor..... said about this GENIUS...OLAOLU

A few months back, when I heard about a Nigerian student that made a drone and was resident in Nigeria, I was both ecstatic about the prospect of meeting him and sad the Nigerian media didn’t give people like him any enough coverage.
In the spirit of dronemanship, I give you 23 year-old Ayoola Olaoluwa, a Computer Science graduate of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) who has built a working camera drone and a Flying Car from scratch.

Having built all these from scratch without formal training of any sorts, I beg to disagree with the “tweaked prototypes” label. This young man struggling against the odds to do the seemingly impossible considering the dispensation in Nigeria today is a working prototype of innovative awesomeness himself. I stand to be corrected.

SCIENCE MINISTER TESTIFIED TO THE INGENUITY OF THIS GENIUS.

My brother, you people are avoiding commenting on this thread. It is damn obvious. Probably because the sabotage of the Biafran effort was mostly from the SS people...now the current generation doesn't know if to praise the Biafran technological feats or to still spite (great) Biafra who their ancestors betrayed. What do you say to this?

Lies the sabotage was caused by ojukwu himself....he came to Benin to liberate the mid west he claims but for three days he had issues with choice of governor....
The mid west welcomed biafran troops hoping they would be allowed to rule themselves but ojukwu and major banjo argued for a while....major banjo wanted a native to be governor but ojukwu throwing caution to the winds brought a certain okonkwo to be governor and that was why the mid west now known as SS joined forces with Nigerian troops and the amphibian force was formed...
So get your facts right

Nice Reply. I saw Ritchiee's post and wondered how he arrived at his conclusion "YOU ARE A LIAR OR ILLITERATE WHO DOES NOT KNOW THAT YORUBA LEADS IN TECHNOLOGY AS WE SPEAK".

I sent him this link http://nlipw.com/in-honor-of-wipo-day-10-nigeria-inventors/. I expected a response but he carefully ignored it. If his assertions were true, I would have expected them to dominate a list of Nigeria Inventors YOU SHOULD KNOW. The initial list had 16 notable inventors but it was later modified to include 5 more. On this list they are 9 Igbos and 5 Yorubas.

No one can categorically say one tribe is better in technology than the other without exhaustive facts. For him to base his statement on 4 or 5 inventions is presumptuous to say the least. Importantly, He doesn't have put other people down just to make himself (or his people) look better. Our successes are not mutually exclusive.

That Ritchiee has the BIGGEST inferiority complex I've ever seen. Like anytime, and I mean EVERY time igbo are praised be it educational, technological, etc by non Igbo. He's there trying to compare dicks, screaming how it should be yoloba that should be praised and next thing we see, he'll start posting crap to measure Dicks. It's hilarious but sad as well. I actually feel very sorry for the dude. Like my freaking prayer, seriously my prayer for the dude is one day a non yoruba would praise yoruba in something cause in his case, he desperately desperately DESPERATELY needs it. Like he's attitude just makes you feel sorry for him
As for the bold...exactly. the funniest of it all, he uses others achievement to try to make himself feel good ( just sad).

Anyway, as for the rest of your post...imagine. The funny thing is if you look at the list, you'll see the igbo inventors even have more patent than their yoloba counterparts on that list. Imagine if they get enough funding to make their patents a reality, then damn

Dts actually a lie. YOU should go back to history, not propaganda. Biafra was HEAVILY supported by the French.I still watched this in a documentary on aljazeera this month. It was a documentary interviewing French intelligence & military officers on their war games in Africa. They specifically stated dt they wanted the oil rich Biafra for themselves against the English. I was watching the documentary with amazement. They supplied weapons to the biafran army, brought in biafran soldiers to the central African republique for training & went on to tell how they ensured they sold a propaganda of "genocide" to the intl community, all in an effort to force the secession.

I will look for dt documentary & post a link here. U shld check back. Hope u watch it. It's really sthn. It made me realize the Nigerian civil war was not just a war between nigerians. The actors were all pawns.
Pleeeaaassee! Kindly find that link from al jazeera and quote me when you do, so I don't muss it. Let's put a nail on this coffin of lies and bury it forever. Not that I won't be happy for the black race but they actually developed indigenous tech but there are too many grey areas our IBO brodas are shying away from by almost always insulting you when you ask probing questions.

Ur still in complete denial. You have bn seriously brainwashed. About dt aljazeera link I said I would post; the title is "the French-African connection" . There are 3 episodes online. Episode 2 talks about Biafra. These were interviews with French intelligence & military officers. Read d real history of d biafran war and how France supplied them with weapons & how France ensured d word "genocide" was placed in the intl media. It was all propaganda.

Here's a link to the "word" summary of the documentary:

The mid west welcomed biafran troops hoping they would be allowed to rule themselves but ojukwu and major banjo argued for a while....major banjo wanted a native to be governor but ojukwu throwing caution to the winds brought a certain okonkwo to be governor and that was why the mid west now known as SS joined forces with Nigerian troops and the amphibian force was formed...
So get your facts right

So this gibberish you wrote is the sabotage of Biafra from "within"? Go and pick up those books bro.

U r such a dunce for leaving the issue being discussed and beating about the bush. From soap and perfume now unto original and fake "perfect counterfeit" pounds when we are discussing steel weapon technology. And talk about going back to school, its obvious you are the one who needs to go back to school as your bolded blunder clearly shows.

if you are not an illiterate, you would have understood from several explanations made by me that one can be knowledgeable in one technology and ignorant in another.

I have scoured the internet for world war 1 and WW2 tanks and weapons and have yet to find any pictures closely resembling any of the machines here. Militaryfactory.com lists all tanks used in both wars but none resembles these.

And countless times I have told your literate self who does not know his tenses(lol) that there is no where in the world armoured tanks are discovered / produced before the invention of guns/bullets, guns are on the lower rungs of the ladder of technology. Indeed u r such a dunce for not seeing this despite all the analogies of ships before canoes, smartphone before transistor radios e.t.c I gave earlier. Now I give up on you because it is so obvious that while I have an organ between my ears I am using, you don't have Nada! Its just an embodiment of cranium and nothing else. Hahaha

France was forced by Britain to stop whatever meagre support she was rendering to Biafra, very early during the war campaign. Biafra was left to fend for herself, and hence had to start thinking outside the box to provide her own weapons.

At least we are now making progress. First it was no foreign help, we fought it all by ourselves with our indigenous technology, now you have agrref that France helped you... but the pride in you quickly added that it was short lived. Please may I ask, where is d evidence that the french assistance was short lived according to you. Noe go back to page 0 of dis thread and see your brodas chest besting over pictures of biafran tanks wholly built by bisfrans. Just so u know, even if the french withdrew as u claimed where is d evidence they took back all their war machines?

There is too much knowledge gap in this country that you wonder what people do with all that voluminous data they buy from the TELCOs. The Nigerian Civil War remains a badly told story 36 years after the last shot was fired. War is a bad thing and it only brings forth the evil in us all. There are never saints nor are there ever angels. just evil and evil all through. See how much harm rag-tag bunches like BH and the so-called Avengers have caused us all already.

Our armed forces distinguished itself in Katanga and Uganda in that era but then again this accolade was more as peace keepers rather than as a fighting forces. However, when our leaders found ways to lead us into war, a great chunk of the idling and wasting WW2 materiel of a few European powers found their way into the hands of both sides of the war. Many shady European businessmen turned into gun runners piled stock & stock of aging arsenal from London to Paris to Moscow to Rome to Berlin to Bonn to Porto via Cairo and Libreville to the ultimate destination which was either Lagos or Ulli. It really didn't matter to these killers who won, be it Nigeria or the rebels; no. It was all about their greed to make money. The British and American governments staked their policy on the believe that Nigeria will win so therefore funded the winning side to curry favours later. They also sincerely believed that disintegration of the colonial borders may be counter productive to Africa's stability. The Russians & East Germans did their bit to aid the rebels, not out of interest in the rebel cause but as the prevailing policy of the cold war era. The French also aided Biafra a bit in the faint hope that should the Anglo-Americans loose interest in the whole business, they can benefit from their position later. The Egyptian Airforce was in the pocket of the Brits and were therefore deployed considerably on the Nigerian side.

Nigeria was wealthier than the rebels and had more legitimacy to buy arms in the international market. Therefore, before and during the war, Nigeria remained far better equipped than the rebels. The critical thing the rebels had on their side was that the war was being fought in their backyard so they knew the terrain better. Also Radio Biafra's successful propaganda made them believe that surrendering to the Nigerians meant horrible torture and death. With backs pushed to the wall, poorly armed guys were willing to fight to death against all odds This war was a fight that Biafra was always going to loose from day one. It has even been suggested in some quarters that the Nigerians deliberately prolonged the war as a matter of High Command policy to prolong the terrible suffering of the rebels The Biafran Army also resorted to mostly guerilla tactics which brought devastating repercussions to their civilians as the Nigerians continually begin to view all Biafrans as combatants with no protection under the Geneva Conventions.

Did the Biafrans locally produce weapons during the war? Yes, but nothing of the supposed sophistication that the OP suggested. Necessity is the mother of all inventions so as rhe Biafrans were cut out of the international market due to the biting Federal blockade and the lack of FX, they resorted to home based fabrications. The pictures the OP posted are real, of course but these are all WW2 materiel which were mostly 30 years old models when our war started. Non of the two sides had state of the art equipment. The leading weapon on the rebel side of the war front was mostly the bolt-action rifle which is a WW1 (1910) relic! However the rebels did truly produce the interesting ogbunigwe classes of bombs, missiles and landmines locally. However you analyse them, these were still mostly what we today call IEDs. So so many rag tag armies produce IEDs today all over the world. The shrapnel attached to the so-called coffin ogbunigwe was nothing more than ball bearings and nails which however still carry so much devastation to the enemy if exploded in the midst of a crowded company. The flying ogbunigwe also did not come with a guidance system thus it often misfired and blew off the Biafran defenders rather than the intended enemy forces. These was the kind of war we fought in the 60's.

My points above do not in anyway remove from the brilliance and ingenuity of the Biafran rebels who fought a loosing war with the grit and tenacity worthy of respect. But the story must not be retold with undeserved glorification of nothing lest we elevate our collective madness to a class of its own.

Do we want to fight a war again? Do you want a Syria in the heart of Africa?

I wish you our young people well.

How much lies that Nigeria can tell to further suppress and kill the truth. The lies are becoming very embarrassing. That Nigeria deliberately prolonged a war that was causing them big embarrassment in the international community. A war biafra lost because 2 of the world powers backed Nigeria. A war that the actual fatalities of the Nigerian military is being hidden from public glare, a war that made Nigeria the first and only country in the world to stop the teaching of history in schools in other to avoid more embarrassments.

A war Nigeria swore to win in 48 hours but couldn't win in 30 months. A war that sent a Nigerian general to exile until it ended.
Please there are history books written by foreigners that show the desperacy, despondency and embarrassments the war caused Nigeria making Nigeria look very unserious in the eyes of Soviet Union

Those were not supplied by France. They were
Biafran made.

And France also did supply weapons to Nigeria.

Biafran lost because they had to fight two world powers in Britain and USSR, using the zombie Nigeria army as proxies. It's as simple as that.

I haven't joined in the original debate because I don't know enough about the subject to make an assertion. It would be advisable if others would borrow a leaf.
I'm doubtful that the tanks were created from scratch. However, I believe they were significantly modified, which required innovation.
So u don't know abt d debate n u chuk mouth inside? HeheheHehehe, anyway, at least u dey reasonable enuf to know those things from page 0 were modified. Please tell that to ur brodas.. no hating!

this is true but they weren't the techies, there were mechanics trained to repair these machines. they weren't the brains
Just seeing this nowbro, so after telling you modern soldiers are trained to innovate/ modify their tanks and other weaponry to suit field ops, you come back and tell me they are mechanics trained to repair broken down machines (I guess with spanner 13 in their hands)

You keep proving me wrong about your intellect because I thought you were intelligent.
Ogbunigwe as clearly stated is a series of weapons systems, weighing from 5kg to 500kg, meaning there were different sizes and configurations. That launcher wasn't the only way they used to deliver the bomb to their enemy!
