How does one go about tax returns on items bought?

Is tax returns only done in the airport before departure or can it be done before heading to the airport?

How soon can one process it?

Thank you.

The US does not refund VAT to visitors like The UK and co. Unless on things like a new car about to be shipped. Thats a different procedure altogether. But in Macy's you can get a reduction... I think 11% on your purchases when you present passport and boarding pass. Don't know if they still do this though. Been a while.

Not only at the airport cos I didn't do mine there,I think you should ask them at the mall or store where you can get back your tax ."lemme copy my post down here"

You'll need your passport, return ticket and receipts,I think you should ask around where you can get your tax back, I had my baby in elpaso,so I did mine in the outlet shoppes mall they have a stand by the food court, in Cielo Vista mall you can find them inside Macy, there is also an office beside Burlington on Yarborough there too .

Hello, I have been a silent follower and also a newbie here..pls my quetion is this..those that are usually turned back at POE who pays for the flight back to Nigeriajust curious to know...will share my own experience when i cross the first bridge(visa interview)I am hoping and praying it goes well for me and hubby...I didn't apply for my 2 kids...will apply later..
another question is can one use B2 visa to travel for vacation afterwards (i.e after successful delivery in US)?

Hello,as per your first question, I am not sure who pays for the flight back but you are definitely not to pay for it on the spot. I guess they just use the return leg of ur ticket if its a return ticket and if its a one way ticket, then it may be the US govt paying for it.
2. You can use your visa for vacation after child birth.

So missionary Journey completed. Returned to Naija on saturday 25th, march 2017. So here is the breakdown of experience and expenses....

Got to US through Houston POE on the 19th of January with DW and my Daughter.( I shared the POE experience previously)

On the 20th of January, went into Bank of America, Open a Joint account with DW and we were given temporary ATM card immediately while we deposited all the cash with us into the account. (This decision was on of the best decisions we made in the early part of our entry). I also applied for a credit card 2 weeks later as i realised that I cant rent a car unless i have a credit card.

On Medical,
LO arrives at Oakbend Medical center, Fortbend county on the 3rd of March, (2 days after due date) in the hands of Dr E, and while I was aked to Cut the umbilical cord, Nice experience. ( i also shared this earlier and I also commend all women, Una dey try abeg!!!)

Oakbend baby registry applied for a Birth certificate and SSN. While i booked appointement for Passport on the 14th of March as that was the earliest day. ( although i made delay of booking after DW was discharged, you may need to book appointment immediately the LO arrives)

DR E - 1900, Lab- 205 ( Dr E required a Lab test but we paid her)
Oakbend- 2500 (discharged after 2 days)
NICS(pead)- 335 (after 20% Discount)
Pead Visit - 100 ($50 per visit, had two visits)
Lab 49
Birth Cert 46 (for 2 copied, was read after 3 business days)
SSN free (Got it my mail on the 14th-5 business days from birth)
Passport 165 (expedited- visited the downtown office on tuesday and was asked to pick it up on friday)
VOA 180 (applied for visa on arrival on monday 20th and was ready on tuesday 21st, Thanks to Desoul...) Payment for the Visa done at the Nigerian Airport in Lagos, If you dont have a dollar card, you will pay $200 cash but if you have a dollar card you will pay $180

Infant ticket was war with Air France/KLM... I had a quote for $469.... I called over 13 times requesting to book a return ticket for the infant which could have dropped it to about 105$ but Airfrance/KLM no agree. It was annoying at a point cos the supervisor insistent that he has been working for 9 year with the company and it has never been done.... So on the last call, i gave up and put my mind to paying the 469$, which was paid at the airport.
Checked in 12 items (8 bags and 4 baby accessories). Flight was smooth, layover in Amsterdam was 5 hours and was not boring as we made use of the lounge. Touch down lagos saturday 25th, 2017 at 8:28pm.

Immigration was flawless and LO was stamped in for One month with VOA.

ALL ZERO BALANCE GOTTEN for all MEDICAL RELATED EXPENSES.

I hope I covered all areas in detail. Opened to any question. you can private chat me for more detail. Available 24/7 for any related question for anyone in this forum. This forum is a DIY forum, If you can read from part 1 and ask questions for clarity. It depends on the city you are at.
If in Houston go to the gallaria downtown in the Macy's (if I am not mistaking) there is a stand for that. You can ask around in shopping centres where you are if not Houston.

Just to add my POE experience to further educate and encourage someone. @Washington IAD

Cpb: Good afternoon, why are you in the United States

ME: To visit my brother and to have my baby.

Cbp: Why is it the United States you made your choice. It's not the right way to make the child an American citizen. This is what is called anchor baby and the American politicians are not happy about this as it is already weighing down on America. This is not just right because at the long run it would mean American citizenship for you.

me. for me or for the child

Cpb.i mean at the long run for you. because when the child is 21 he would be able to file for you then you become a citizen also.

ME: I just dey look the story teller. I want the best health care for my child.

Cpb... is this your first child?
ME:yes
Cbp.. when is the due date
me. May 12 after some ehn ehnm

cpl.. how much money do you have.

me. 10k

cpl.... but why chose America. i mean there are other countries like UK Canada which are equally good.

me. America is number one

Cpb.. so how long would you be staying

me.. between 7 to 8 weeks

Cpb.. is this your husband

ME.. yes

Cbp would you be staying with her all through

DH.. yes

Cbp .. you mean you will leave your job for that long

DH. I'm a software QA Analyst and work mostly on contract basis and I'm not going to be on contract for those period of time.
Cbp. .. so when is your return

me. may 21

Cpb.. let me see your return ticket

me hands it over to him

Cpb .. you mean you want to return immediately after you give birth

me. yes because i don't have so much time from work

Cpb. how many bags do you have

me...5 including the 2 hand luggages

Cpb.. do you have food items in them

ME. no

Cpb. okay

and we had or finger prints and he minuted on our custom form which he gave back to us but he didnt stamp our passport.

phase 2.

at another Cbp where alot of people are seated to be further checked.

two cpb guys attending to people at the same time.

Cpb. why are you here.

me.same story

Cbp 2...how much do you have

dh. all together or just us dollars

cbp.. all including all other currencies

dh.$10148 and about 1k riyad which is insignificant

Cbp..that's about $300 look. thats significant

dh. but we ain't going to make use of it here

Cpb.is it possible to change the Riyads to dollars.

dh.. here in the US you mean?

cpb..yes

dh. no because we haven't done so before and we dont intend to do so.

Cpb.. that's not it. i mean it is possible to change riyad into dollars like.. are there exchangers here.

dh: well there are exchangers in the US but i am not aware if they change Riyads to dollars. but they do this where we reside in Saudi.

Cpb. so why do you want to have your baby here.. saudi has good health care also.

me.. America is number one in all and we wanr rhe best for the child.

Cbp.what do you do for a living

me.. i am a medical doctor

Cbp.. turns to dh.. next time you answer questions correctly and you should have changed the whole riyad to dollars

dh. i just didnt want to be completely out of local currency

Cpb . every money is significant and so you have to fill this form.

hands dh a form where declaration of all the money was made including the Riyads and they stamped us in.

No be small thing.. it was all at Dulles Airport today

Hi Family,

Please I have a serious issue and need all possible advise i can get regarding how to go about this situation.

I travelled to America via Houston to have my baby on the 25th Feb. My Edd was suppose to be 29th March. My water broke on the emirates flight 10hrs to arrival enroute Houston to Dubai.

To cut the long story short. The airline called me an ambulance . I was wheeled from the aircraft to nearest hospital . (Memorial Herman north East). Immigration followed me to the hospital . After the long hours of drilling and test carried out by the hospital it's was obvious my water broke and the doctor said i had to have the baby. Immigration had to take my passport to the airport and stamp me in and return my passport to me at the hospital.

Once my cousin came to the hospital we decided for Memorial Herman to discharge us to enable us go to the hospital i had initially intended to use oakbend. I had no knowledge of what their birth Package cost was and also the distant from where I was staying (1hr in case my baby ends up at NICU) . They refused but we insisted and left against medical advise and made us sign some docs.

My baby came on 27th Feb. The baby was taken to NICU as he has pre term.

The following bill had been received:

Hospital Oakbend $2500 Paid

Doc Dama $2500 ( $1900 virginal birth, $300 high risk (cod I heard Fibroid and had a cerlage and $200 to take off the cerclage) Paid

Epidural - $1500 Paid

Paediatrician: $400 (1st visit and circumstition )
$100 second visit .
The last visit which will be 3days before my travel date is $100 plus $14.80 per vaccine and baby is to take 4. Total $159.20 for 3rd visit

NICU - $4200 (allowed a payment plan. Initially structured for 2months becos I never expected the Oakbend bill stated below. )

Emergency truck - $1200 (allowed a payment plan OF $100 monthly)

Memorial Herman : for 3 hours visit they said the bill is $4500. I am still fighting this bill....

Now Oakbend said I have to pay an additional $5200, that my baby stayed additional 4days after my 2days hospital stay. The bill was sent by Julie Ann Medina this morning after I sent a mail asking for my ZERO balance.

I never anticipated the $1300 charge per day as I thought this was included in the NICU bill. I called her this morning and she is saying the bill is due immediately and no discount will apply ... That the $1300 per day is the discounted bill. She said if payment is not made immediately then the bill will revert to the $18,317 undiscountedd bill.

Please has anyone had similar issue and how did you resolve it. Especially as regards the Oakbend additinal $5200 bill

My baby is 1 month old today and I intend to leave back to NIGERIA on 25th April.

My baby is 1 month old today and I intend to leave back to NIGERIA on 25th April.

First and foremost, I congratulate you and Thank God for the safe delivery of your baby boy.

When a baby goes to NICU, the bill is separate from the mothers package (Its totally a different package from your planned package)

Did you stay in the hospital till your baby was discharged? If yes, the reason for the bill. cos you've overstayed.

My advice is that you make payment plan that is convenient and acceptable and move on.

God will replenish you in ways you don't expect.

Best regards.

Hello momma! Congrats on the birth of your child! Something similar happened to me in 2013 when I had my son. He had to stay in the nicu for a little over a week.(He was born almost two months early). They did bring a separate bill. If they're not willing to do a discount you'll have to do a payment plan. Don't worry..they'll ask you for the amount that's convenient for you. Our bill was over $30k. It wasn't easy men. Especially for an unbudgeted occurrence. However when it was down to like $10k they offered a bulk payment option that if we could pay 5k at once they would round off the account. (Because we never missed a payment). We did that and we were homefree. cheesy. It was only after the last payment that we got the zero balance letter.
My advice is...do a payment plan and try not to miss a payment. Good luck!

Thanks dear. The Julie Lady just sent an email lowering the bill to $2800 dollars that's is 700 per day as against 1300 per day . God is faithfully . God that started the good work will surely complete it.
