GENERAL COURT MARTIAL SENTENCES AIRCRAFTMAN BERNARD KALU TO DEATH BY HANGING

The General Court Martial (GCM) sitting at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Makurdi has sentenced Aircraftman (ACM) Bernard Kalu to death by hanging for shooting and killing his female colleague, late Aircraftwoman (ACW) Sholape Oladipupo. Delivering the judgement on Tuesday, 15 August 2017, the President of the GCM, Group Captain Elisha Bindul, found ACM Kalu guilty of the charges of murder, house breaking, impersonation, failure to perform military duty, loss of Service property and disobedience to standing orders. The verdict is, however, subject to confirmation by the Convening Authority.

The Defence Counsel, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, adding that if the Convening Authority did not review the verdict, he would appeal to a higher court. The judgement today brought to an end, months of the GCM trial of the unfortunate shooting incident involving the two NAF personnel. It would be recalled that ACM Kalu shot and killed ACW Oladipupo Sholape on 12 March 2017 at the NAF Base, Makurdi. The successful conclusion of the GCM is a validation of the NAF's earlier assurance to the general public that justice would be served to all concerned parties in the matter.

NAF COMMISSIONS PROJECTS IN LAGOS

In its determination to maintain a highly motivated and operationally effective force, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has again commissioned another set of welfare projects in Lagos. The projects, which are located at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja and 041 Communications Depot, Shasha, were aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of personnel and their families with a view to motivating them for optimal performance. At the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, a 48 x 1-bedroom Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ (SNCOs) transit accommodation, named after late Sergeant Karatu LA, as well as an entrance archway and a photo stand were commissioned. At the 041 Communications Depot, Shasha, a newly constructed block of 18 x 2-bedroom SNCOs’ accommodation as well as a Corporals and below Club, built for the recreation of airmen, were commissioned.

While commissioning the projects, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Chief of Administration, Air Vice Marshal Lawal Alao, stated that the construction and furnishing of the new residential accommodation as well as the renovation of existing ones, “were aimed at addressing the acute shortage of accommodation that was hitherto experienced by personnel”. According to the CAS, in pursuance of the resolve to reposition the NAF, “we embarked on a comprehensive infrastructural development campaign which involved the construction and furnishing of new NAF Hospitals and schools as well as the renovation and expansion of existing ones in virtually all NAF Bases including Kaduna, Bauchi, Ibadan and Lagos, where a new secondary school was commissioned at Shasha on 14 June 2017 and would commence academic activities this September”. The CAS reiterated the resolve of the NAF to continue to effectively motivate personnel for effective employment of air power in counterinsurgency operations in the North East and other theatres of operations.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal IJ Yahaya, said the fact that another set of projects was being commissioned in Lagos, in quick succession, is a testimony to the dogged determination of the CAS to rapidly develop infrastructure in the NAF with a view to improving personnel welfare and spurring them towards enhanced service delivery. The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of keys to some beneficiaries.

I don't know why The Nigerian army have overlooked the anti-personal mines in COIN Operations. These toys could be used to secure perimeters and FOBs in the Niger-delta and North-East, coupled with pre-cordinated artillery fire or mortar fire, they will wreak havoc on any BH trying to attack them. There's no terrorist that will want to face 400 ball bearings shearing through them in just one blast of a CLAYMORE.

The M18A1 Claymore mine has a horizontally convex gray-green plastic case (inert training versions are light blue or green with a light blue band). The shape was developed through experimentation to deliver the optimum distribution of fragments at 50 m (55 yd) range. The case has the words "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY" embossed on the front of the mine.[3] A simple open sight on the top surface allows for aiming the mine. Two pairs of scissor legs attached to the bottom support the mine and allow it to be aimed vertically. On both sides of the sight are fuse wells set at 45 degrees.

Internally the mine contains a layer of C-4 explosive behind a matrix of about seven hundred 1⁄8-inch-diameter (3.2 mm) steel balls set into an epoxy resin.

When the M18A1 is detonated, the explosion drives the matrix forward, out of the mine at a velocity of 1,200 m/s (3,937 ft/s),[1] at the same time breaking it into individual fragments. The steel balls are projected in a 60° fan-shaped pattern that is 6.5 feet (2.0 m) high and 50 m (55 yd) wide at a range of 50 m (55 yd). The force of the explosion deforms the relatively soft steel balls into a shape similar to a .22 rimfire projectile.[1] These fragments are moderately effective up to a range of 100 m (110 yd), with a hit probability of around 10% on a prone man-sized 1.3-square-foot (0.12 m2) target. The fragments can travel up to 250 m (270 yd). The optimum effective range is 50 m (55 yd), at which the optimal balance is achieved between lethality and area coverage, with a hit probability of 30% on a man-sized target.[4]

The weapon and all its accessories are carried in an M7 bandoleer ("Claymore bag"wink. The mine is detonated as the enemy personnel approaches the killing zone. Controlled detonation may be accomplished by use of either an electrical or non-electrical firing system. When mines are employed in the controlled role, they are treated as individual weapons and are reported in the unit fire plan. They are not reported as mines; however, the emplacing unit must ensure that the mines are removed, detonated, or turned over to a relieving unit. The 100-foot (30 m) M4 electric firing wire on a green plastic spool is provided in each bandoleer. The M57 firing device (colloquially referred to as the "clacker"wink is included with each mine. An M40 circuit test set is packed in each case of six mines. When the mines are daisy chained together, one firing device can detonate several mines.

The mine can be detonated by any mechanism that activates the blasting cap. There are field-expedient methods of detonating the mine by tripwire, or by a timer, but these are rarely used.

The trucks are for logistics purposes.
The AK-47 ( PACKO) will most likely be replaced by the now standard Beryl Rifle, and the modified Beryl Rifle
Understand also" parade ground inspection uniform and equipment" is totally different from what these men will be using in the field.
The G.O. C being there means they will have access, they also trained at Buni Yadi which they trained at the Na SF school located closest to the field of A.O.R.
I also agree with JAKE our Nigerian Journalist the way they report Military news will cause one to take a very deep breath, shake one's head and just read on. angry angry angry
Thanks for the explanation

Is the Strike teams from the SF bns we have or they r newly trained
if they are new it's a waste they could have used the AH SG

my problem is with this special something here, strike something there We need them to harmonize all this things under one command
So afterwards these men will be what? incorporated into The SF bde or SG?
Special units shouldn't /can't be mass produced

•72 mobile strike force
•some sf battalions
•AFSF
•AHQSG
All these lone mobile “strike force” ,”strike group” who coordinates their missions?
How do they call in air support

just a question why the mobile strike team tasking has been publicized , such intended long range ops r kept under the radar for maximum effectiveness and element of surprise.

now wouldn't BH be alerted to it

or is it a red herring on the part of NA a stratagem to

1.buy time , by discouraging random attacks on civilians thereby reliving pressure

or

2.get bh elements moving out of their safe areas fearing NA attacks

or

3.cover up for something else, a diversionary tactic to get bh attention/involvement while something else hits them

or

4. get bh to take unnecessary risks , and thereby snare their overground and underground humint operatives / armed cadres etc in the process

etc
etc

They are not MRAPS but lightly armoured vehicles possibly with protection against light arms 7.62 and grenades to some degree. If I am right it's the Streit group Cyclone. You are probably looking at over $350k add Nigeria factor (Egunje) and you are closer to $500k in my opinion not fit for purpose, over priced, and not best value.

Mobile strike force should really have much better armoured protection and with FLIR remote weapon stations. These guys should really have the bulk of thier operations at night. Where they can get the enemy unawares and with stealth.

The vehicles are not enough so they will be complemented by the in my opinion, suicidal light skinned completely inadequate Toyota and Ford pick ups.

There are far far far better alternatives that I could get that would give us clear overwhelming advantage. At far less cost possibly at around $70k per unit.

Why are we not buying IFVs. It's not all about MRAPS.

Using MRAP is still about boots on ground. Purchase high-tech hardwares.

Thats something I find bewildering in the extreme.

The NA does not have a definitive IFV in its entire armoury. Combatants going around in the kill zone with soft skinned pick-up trucks. That is suicidal in modern day warfare.

There are two things, we have to look at ourselves and examine our inherent traits, characters and mind sets.

Firstly some of our attitudes and practices cut across all sectors. I meet quite a lot of Professors who have not published an academic paper in 10/15 years but consider themselves as relevant in Nigerian universities. Using the same lecture notes of 5,7,10 years ago. We enthroned longevity and experience over innovation and excellence. My suspicions is that they our top brass lack modern day understanding and military strategy. They are happy and content to remain static and in a sense ignorant.

Secondly we can never get away from it the word that transcends all sectors in Nigeria CORRUPTION. None of the Nigerian top brass can stand up to question with regards to integrity, let's be honest.

Consider how absurd it is, we are spending $600 million on 12 turboprop planes, slower than a WW2 Spitfire. When majority of our ground troops are using antiquated AK47'S with no optic sights and go into the kill zone in the back of suicidal pick up trucks.

I consider it Madness.
