I am not sure peter obi was against building infrastructures . He feels the money if channeled to other aspect of the economy at the point in time would have yielded better results and impact The question should be how many of the infrastructures have been completed and/or were budgeted for and you can't tell me that the Lagos - Ibadan rail has been giving returns on the economy as people are being employed and business around the stations are booming. My question to you now is how did human capital development effect the economy of Anambra state while PO was Governor. |

immortalcrown: Federal universities have the highest population of undergraduates in Nigeria. UNILAG is on strike. You said Lagos and Lagos have no control on federal schools Refinery is an infrastructure. Sea and dry ports are infrastructures and they at least give jobs. I already stated in my comment. Did you not see it? But I never said they are the major things that drive economy. And I am not wrong. Do the ports correct the abnormality of Nigeria economy? 2007 Toyota Corolla's price is increasing every month. The prices of other cars and keke are not different. The price of every imported item is increasing. It even affects housing. I am sick because I was involved in a road accident. The corset I bought 15k in October last year costs more than 25k now and it is not even available in the market. The drugs I got around 6k in October last year cost above 13k now. A used gaming laptop I bought at the price of 170k in 2020 now costs about 300k. So, how are the sea and dry ports the major drivers of the economy? The prices of what you listed increase because of the price of dollars meaning importers have to pay more for dollars in other to import these things. so how can we solve that? Nigeria spends about 12% of it's foreign exchange on just importation of petroleum products. In other for Nigerians to by this products cheap, Nigeria spends over #1trn on subsidy every year. What all these means is that most of Nigeria income is used to buy dollars to import fuel and also used to pay for the price to be reduced in other to cushion the effects on Nigeria. If we had a working refinery, Nigeria doesn't need to spend those money and still the product would be cheap and we would be able to export these products to other countries which would also strengthen our currency. Until Nigeria's dependency on foreign goods and services reduces, the Nigeria economy cannot grow.
They way to drive the economy is to make policies that will reduce government foreign expenditure to balance international trade and favour the country's currency. Give more allocations to education and ensure proper utilization of the allocations. Cut the salaries of governors and senatorsPrevent herdsmen from disrupting farming in other parts of the country so that the North will not be the only major producer of food items. Stop using borrowed fund to share flashy cars to the political leaders, so that you will not continue to borrow. Build a government refinery, not the ones owned by Dangote and BUA. Dangote and BUA will likely not make fuel cheap. Look at how they sell cement, floor, sugar and salt. Use Local engineers for most of the works. You cannot develop when the works are done by Chinese. Medical treatment abroad by politicians should stop so the hospitals here will be equipped and the doctors and nurses will be well-paid. The list is endless. How do you intend to do all these with the needed infrastructure, how do you want a farmer to reduce the price of his goods when the road from his farm to the market his bad. 2) How do you intend to tell manufacturers to reduce the price of their goods when it's raw materials are in a village and can only be accessed by boat/ships when you can build a bridge and the manufacturer would go there 3) How do you intend to tell a farmer to produce more goods when he has no form of infrastructure to preserve them. 4) How do you tell a farmer/manufacturer to export his goods when the country has no working seaport or airport. 5) How do you intend to trade with other countries when you don't have the needed infrastructures for example if Nigeria had the right infrastructures for exporting gas, wouldn't we be having gains now that countries are avoiding Russia. 6) The government introduce farmer money to help farmers increase the amount of crops they produce did it work? yes it did but when it did the farmers were crying that they don't have were to store their produce. 7) The way Nigerians have been prospering abroad has shown that what we need is the right infrastructure in place before our economy would grow. I think I don't understand you own definition of human capital development maybe you should explain to me. |

Dsalvo: Simple. OP's argument, as usual and expectedly, is just completely biased and lacking in factual economic basis because the mission is to defend Obi blindly and ethnocentrically.
Tinubu introduced PPP (public-private sector partnership) to Nigeria, at a time it was a new and novel concept, as an innovative way to fund the delivery of critical infrastructure he knew would enhance the economic prosperity of Lagos.
The man has been proven 1000% correct because improved infrastructure played its part, along with aggresive drive to increase IGR and other measures, in assisting Lagos become the 5th or 6th biggest economy in Africa.
For example, even cutting the commuting time of Lagosians by one hour, by funding construction of critical road and rail transport, has massive output productivity implications for the economy of Lagos!!
These things are not Rocket Science and I dont understand why some would want to stand very simple logic on its head.
I can only conclude a sentimental and biased outlook is the reason anyone would support Obi's stance while denouncing Fashola's argument which is a given in economic theory and predictive forecasting. I agree with you they know what he said is wrong but just want to defend him. The European countries Africans travel to do they do any form of human development for Africans there? the answer is no but because that have the infrastructure and enabling environment already Africans are making it there. I tell people if Nigeria can have 24hrs power supply half of our problems is solved already. |

immortalcrown: You are wrong. Obi did not say infrastructure is not good. He said infrastructure is not what drives economy. And I have a good proof. Ebonyi State had the lowest cost of living among all Igbo states before 2015. For the past 7 years, the state has gotten many infrastructures. But standard of living has drastically fallen in the same state. There is little or no difference between Ebonyi and other Igbo states now in terms of cost of living. Did the infrastructure provide more jobs or improve education in Ebonyi in the past 7 years? Has the infrastructure reduced the number of Ebonyi youths that run to other states for hawking? Lagos State is another example. Lagos has more infrastructures than most of or all other states in Nigeria. But cost of living is higher in Lagos, both in rent and in food prices. They build roads and flyovers in every area. What happens later? Land become expensive, fraudsters and embezzlers of public funds buy the land and build houses to show their wealth. No other benefits. Foreign engineers are used for the construction of the infrastructures. Apart from sand and maybe cement and wood, other materials for the constructions are imported. How many Nigerians secured good jobs because of the infrastructures? Apart from doing menial jobs for the construction companies, what else?
No good roads or flyover in Ibeju Lekki before Dangote situated his refinery there. This proves that good roads and flyovers have not been able to give Nigeria a refinery. No good roads and flyover in the local government area where Dangote has cement factory in Benue. The breweries in Enugu are not surrounded by amazing roads and flyovers. But these establishments give Nigerians good jobs. Ebonyi is building roads and flyovers but its indigens do not have good jobs in the quarry sites. The good roads, flyovers and estates in Lagos do not exempt Lagos from ASUU strike. Even the same Lagos is borrowing money from foreign banks.
Infrastructure is good and aids economy. But it is not among the major things that drive economy. Stop misquoting Obi. 1) Lasu isn't on strike 2) You said Ebonyi had the lowest cost of living in the east before the government started building roads and bridges my question is was Ebonyi a village when it had the lowest cost of living, were there no roads during that time? 3) Infrastructure is not only about building roads and bridges, refinery is an infrastructure, sea port, airport, dry port, economic zones/business zone, power plants etc. How would a country battling with high cost of foreign exchange do without these. 4) Now please explain to me in detailed for how human capital development would help the economy. |

Prinxzona10: Sorry buh let me take my time to educate you a little bit sir/madam.. Please, read what I wrote again, then you would understand the motives behind my submission because you cannot be doing same thing all the time and expect a different results. Peter Obi never said that infrastructures ain't an economy's driving force buh what prompted him to emphasized more on human development first was because the money they borrowed for all these so called infrastructures was looted and they're still looting it,thereby rendering the citizens unemployed, hungry and jobless. Only one person stole #80b naira, have you check what that money would've done to Nigerian citizens or the kind of employment the money would've brought for the citizens when utilize judiciously? You cannot borrow money and start building an elephant projects that got no positive impact on the citizens and logically, after borrowing to build railways, what happens to the railways now when insecurity is the other of the day buh you can create a favorable environment, create jobs and those people causing insecurities would gets their hands busy with some legitimate works thereby reducing the criminal activities in the society and doing so,is when your so called infrastructures will thrive via that a conducive atmosphere(which is peace) drives infrastructural developments through human development buh when there's no conducive atmosphere (insecurities everywhere) and no human development (poverty everywhere including unemployment) ,how would your infrastructure thrive? .. Sir/madam,you cannot keep borrowing money and be using it for an elephant projects when your citizens are dying of hunger, when the employment rate is very high, when all the development indices are in negativity.. My word is that you cannot achieve any infrastructural development without achieving a human development simultaneously(and that's the problem with this APC government via borrowing to build Niger bridge, railways when the citizens are jobless, hungry and very poor)... I just decided to lecture some of you guys because is like education in Nigeria affected all of us or is it the APC government brouhaha... I rest my case...Gracias!!!! The argument here is about is infrastructure the driving force of an economy and looting is not part of the argument. The human development you are talking about doesn't it need money too and can't the money be looted.. This is the reason why Lagos state is ahead of other states. Subsequent governors in the state have invested massively on infrastructure and they have been receiving the returns. Take the lekki sea port as an example the government went to source for investment from China and the port is being developed on a PPP basis with Lagos start having 20% share now imagine after completion how many people would be employed, the investment that would come to that area after completion. The Governor doesn't need to give insensitive to people for human capital development because with all these, people in the state would be able to develop themselves. |

tonyson010: DO YOU KNOW that NNPC refineries (Warri, Kaduna etc) is there receiving trillions of naira and producing NOTHING. Yeah money are budgeted for the maintenance of the refinery for maintenance even though they are not producing anything but I want you to think if this refinery were working and producing up to their capacity which is +/- 450000 bpsd and our total consumption per day is +/- 593,000bpd now imagine if they are working, there wouldn't be need for subsidy which is what is tearing Nigeria pocket 2) The price of petroleum products would be controlled by market forces meaning if the price of crude falls, the price of petroleum products too would fall. 3) More jobs would be created and the money saved from subsidy would be used for other things. sometime Last year or 2019, Govt spent over $3bn on ajaokuta steel, nothing is showing. I don't know much about the steel plant but you imagine we had a functional steel plant the likes of pro- force and Innoson and other manufacturers wouldn't need to look for dollars to import steel which would also have an effect on the prices of their cars Fashola is minister of power for 7yrs, huge amount of money has been spent in that period on power, but generator is still a must have gadget for any home in the country. Fashola portfolio was reduced from Power/works and housing to only works and housing since after the 2019 elections and the person who replaced him was sacked this year. To be honest I had hopes on Fashola has minister of power but I also realized that na watin FEC approve minister go do remember Ameichi complains. Many state airports are constructed with trillions, yet very few are functional and maybe Abuja, Lagos Kano are the ones generating anything significant( others are there receiving renovation money every two years just to have a runway). Yes because most of those governor's built them for campaign purposes and yeah they would be needed later. I also think it would be because they don't have other infrastructure to compliment it. A state like Anambra if it had a functional sea port to compliment the airport. We can't afford to borrow money and spend on things that will not help many people. The ones we spend on, we must be ready to keep it working for the country. Borrowing is not bad in as much you use the money right and judiciously. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT is very essential. Yeah it is important but the without the needed infrastructure, it would be useless We build so many universities that are poorly funded with few structures and lowly ranked in the world.[/quote] |

like I wonder how you people think. In the case of agriculture how do you expect to export the goods you get without a cargo airport isn't that an infrastructure?
There is no an economy would grow without infrastructure already in place and I know you know this. Companies that left Nigeria to Ghana did that because Nigeria don't have the needed infrastructure. 1) No power supply and the price of diesel was high which would result in increase in cost of production. 2) What about refinery if we had a working refinery, we would make more money.

PresidObi: Nigeria,
A country where proven public service failures stand up to lecture others who had made a success of both their private and public lives. Fashola should be ashamed of himself for talking about economy even while his government has collapsed under economic woes.
You really cannot use infrastructure to grow the economy, what Fashola failed to mention was that the millions of liters of gas used to build the bridge were imported, at a very negative balance of trade for a country that has gas under its soil? Most of the other materials and manpower are also imported, benefiting foreign countries. The number of expatriate workers in JB will amaze you, with thrice that number serving them as cooks, gardeners, drivers and security men. Loss of foreign currency.
You grow the economy organically, by improvements in the GDP, creating enabling environment with power supply (an area Fashola failed woefully) and making sure more people work and exchange goods and services, not to talk about tax. APC keep proving everyday that they are passers by in the corridors of power.
Vote for Peter Obi.
He will make Nigeria so rich and prosperous that the likes of Fashola will relocate to Jamaica to hide their faces. But PO didn't make Anambra so rich the money he saved has been used to build airport and that's all How would you grow an economy without infrastructure would a company site it's company if the roads are bad and the power supply you mentioned isn't that also an infrastructure? Nigeria should be cashing out from gas sales now assuming it has the infrastructure on ground for exploration but we don't have that's why we haven't been able to sell our gas to foreign countries. Infrastructure comes first before an economy can grow construct roads, generate and supply enough power and the economy would grow. |
