Next plug out your USB/Serial cable and then plug it in again.

Again type in console:

dmesg -c

Hopefully you'll be rewarded with an output like this:

TADA! Thats it. Now you can proceed to setting up your STARCOMMS Wireless account.
Open the console and type:

gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

Paste the following setting per-se in the text editor, save and exit.

Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 230400
Phone = #777
Init1 = ATZ
Stupid Mode = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
Username = …, fill in yourself
Password = ……… fill in yourself

Important Note: Stupid Mode should be set to 1 otherwise the hash sign (#) with phone number will not be treated by wvdial.
In the console, fire up internet with:
wvdial starcomms
It will spit out an output like this:

When you plug-in the cable in your computer, Linux doesn't show anything which is a bit depressing. Its like rejection to a Windows user; he usually expects tons of pop-ups assuring him something is going on. Lets see if Linux paid any interest.
Fire up a console (Go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:

sudo su

Enter password

then type:

dmesg -c

Now in console, search for the following lines:
ti_usb_3410_5052 1-1:2.0: TI USB 3410 1 port adapter converter detected
usb 1-1: TI USB 3410 1 port adapter converter now attached to /dev/ttyUSB0

You'd have to be a bit patient to find it (Its prints a lot of text!) If you're having trouble, save the output of the command to a file by typing:

dmesg -c > Desktop/Output.txt

You'll see a nice text file in which you can search for phrases using Ctrl+F.

If you find the following lines, then your modem is detected, configured and installed. But that didn't happen in my case

You will probably see the following error messages (don't worry if they don't match your output word-for-word):

ti_usb_3410_5052 1-1:1.0: TI USB 3410 1 port adapter converter detected

ti_usb_3410_5052: probe of 1-1:1.0 failed with error -5

This means that the modem was detected but the Serial-to-USB Cable (which actually is a TIUSB3410 Multi-point Adapter) couldn't be configured.

Now we have to make one rule file to fix the cable issue. In console, type:

cd /etc/udev/rules.d/

gedit 026_ti_usb_3410.rules

This will open GEdit, which will display an empty file bearing the obnoxious name you just copy-pasted Now onto some more copy-pasting, put the entire following paragraph in the file

#TI USB 3410

SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device" ACTION=="add"
SYSFS{idVendor}=="0451",SYSFS{idProduct}=="3410" \

for what its worth your output shows no modems, i hope the lsusb will show the phone as something.

then as i said am a bit stumped but u know that if the pc dont even detect the phone then nothing we can do!!

@cd rom- off hand id say d drive is goosed n u need a new one. anyway for wat its worth u can try cleaning d lens. to do that i suggest u get a cotton stick like d type used for cleaning ur ears. eject d drive n gently use d stick 2 clean d lens. dont use methylated spirit cos if it gets into the lens decoder its bye bye. unless u can manage to make d stick slightly dry n make sure not a single drop of excess moisture gets past d lens

What graphic card are you using? and when say noticeably slower what are you comparing too? ( has it always been this way since you installed mint 9.10? or is this a recent development? and was it this way with Ubuntu 9.04 or mint 9.04? ) I am asking because there are some regression wtih some Intel cards on karmic which causes the system to be very slow and shubby performance wise. and also how fast does it take to login, start a program, copy files etc

i use an ati radeon card. it was'nt even like this when it was freshly installed and it definitely wasnt like this with 9.04.

i heard about the regression wahala too, hummn, ok so that could be it? well its noticeably slower to start programs, copying seems to be ok, i guess i never really took notice of the speed of copying anyway. login is like maybe 15 secs slower thereabouts, but the issue is not with startup.

its when it starts up, then i launch a program it then starts to drag. 5 programs you probably have to wait 10 secs to even change windows from one to the other. firefox is really a pain to use now, takes like 40 secs to even start.

maybe i just go back to 9.04 i just want to be sure that its not some other problem e.g. the hard drive because i changed the drive like 7 weeks back after the old one failed.

it'll be really annoying to go back to 9.04 then find out that its still slow again!!!! im enjoying some features in this 9.10

come o, virus gurus, there is a flash drive in my office with a virus in its boot sector!!!

no matter how much u format it, when u pop it in to the pc, the av shows it and cleans it. it copies an autorun into the flash. yet if u scan the system, it does not show up anywhere. that made me realise it must be in the flash boot sector.

how can i remove it?

dude which planet u come from, change your antivirus, u have autoruns on ur laptop.

i am no antivirus guru, but u can try avira. they have a free version that does ok, its not heavy on system resources, and u will not need any crack or key. google for it.

ah, iv been using it for about 3 weeks now. its in the repos i think!!, i did not use the repos anyway but i think its in universe.

hummnn, i dunno, tried removing some of the candy though. i did look at the drive and found that it has 7 bad sectors
the drive is just 6 weeks old!!! how can i repair the bad sectors, windows cannot see the ext partition and the magic tools i have does not repair!!!
