Leopantro: open garden has two functions. it has a peer to peer network mode in which you share internet access with someone else who has the app ( like torrent, i think ) and an ad-hoc mode which creates a hotspot separate from the hotspot capability of your phone. open garden has two apps on the play store. make sure you take the wifi version. because droidvpn wouldn't use the default iptables of the phone , i had to look for something to merge with it to make a hotspot with it and that's when i found it. an alternative is GAEproxy
Precisely y im asking.

First is i can see just one app in the store, which i installed.

It only asks to activate bluetooth. What for i have no idea.

Then i have to put on my gps.

And one time i tried it on two phones. Apparently they saw themselves one kind. But then what else?

I tried using data on the other one. Didnt work.

Tried creating a hotspot.the other phone connected. Still didnt work.

What exactly is it supposed to be doing? I join this mysterious network then what? Its obfuscating my data like tor or what?

Annoyingly they have no documentation or how to on their site.

Headscratching.... really.

I was curious to know what it does to share the vpn but other than the app running i dont know what it does really.

The GAE one is what? A proxy system? How does that share the connection sef?

But i swear down i dont get the techno happiness thingy. Are they now rootable and flashable?

The funny thing is this shows that the update hype on android is not universal. Most folks dont care about updates. If they did u wont see folks buying techno.

Or does techno release updates now? Gingerbread n ICS .... which year will they get to JB? 2015?

Can someone explain what goes on with that opengarden thing?
PhonesRe: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op): 5:11pm On Feb 22, 2013
For quick reference, these are the current components used from Android:

Linux Kernel (stock Android kernel provided by the vendor, with a few changes to support some extra features needed by Ubuntu)
OpenGL ES2.0 HAL and drivers
Audio/Media HAL and services, to re-use the hardware video decoders
RILD for modem support

As Ubuntu is running in a separated container on top of an Android kernel and services, the communication between them happens via Binder, Sockets and libhybris.

Other than the very basic services (needed to re-use the binary blobs already available), the rest is just pure Ubuntu goodness

“When Barcelona were here a few years ago, Cesc Fabregas was asking the bench after 15 minutes whether he should press centre-backs or he should sit.
“Six months after his move to Barcelona, Fabregas said he was now learning the technical and tactical subtleties of football. What had he been doing before for eight years at Arsenal?”

Wenger left his best players out of the FA Cup game against Blackburn and threw them on for the last 19 minutes with the game goalless
.
Within seconds Colin Kazim-Richards struck Rovers’ winner. Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere went on but did not have enough time to turn things around.

It left Arsene Wenger staring at another trophyless season.

Robson added: “Of course he wants to win the Champions League.

“But did he have to rest half the team against Blackburn? You can maybe do that in the league, where you can make up for a bad result. But not in a cup competition.”

Not for the first time Robson dubbed Wenger a “dictator”.

He added: “He’s untouchable, in complete control of the club and runs the club like a dictator. No one has the authority to fire him. He will go on and keep on overseeing a lack of success.

IT is the most devastating verdict on the way Arsene Wenger runs Arsenal. Ever.

Former Gunners star Stewart Robson spent five years at the club as a player and seven years as a summariser for Arsenal TV before leaving last summer.

He did not just slam Wenger and the board for not spending big on players and lacking real ambition to give fans trophies. Far from it.
Robson accused:

- Wenger of not coaching the current players properly and blocking No 2 Steve Bould from working with the defence.

- Majority shareholder Stan Kroenke and £2.1million-a-year chief executive Ivan Gazidis of ignoring the fans’ wishes because they see Arsenal as a cash machine.

- Players of a lack of hunger as they sit on massive wages and all they care about is finishing in the top four to pocket huge bonuses.
Robson said: “The debate is always about him spending money. But it would be better to analyse why the team is defending abysmally and have no balance.

“Everything is off the cuff. There is no tactical plan. I see the same mistakes at the back.

“Why are the full-backs always in the wrong positions?

“The fans are screaming for better players but you just have to coach the ones that are here properly.

“Why does Per Mertesacker make the right decision 99 per cent of the time in the German team but not at Arsenal? There is no cohesion in the back four.”

Speaking to German newspaper Suedeutsche Zeitung, Robson did not pull any punches.

He insisted that legendary defender Bould has no role with the Gunners backline.
Robson said: “Steve Bould is not allowed to coach the defence.

“Wenger wants to do everything himself but doesn’t give players any explicit instructions.

Later today a developer preview of Ubuntu Touch will be made available to download and install on a handful of Nexus devices.

Both the Phone interface and the newly unveiled Tablet interfaces will be distributed; the type of device you’re installing on deciding which Ubuntu Touch format you get.

With anticipation for the touch-centric interfaces unquenchable, many of folks will be planning to sacrifice a stable Android install for a chance to toy around with the newest Phablet phenomenon.

But is that a wise thing to do?

When property developer’s are trying to sell houses on a plot of land prior to building them they create a ‘show home’.

A show home is a real house that’s finished and furnished to a high standard – but only at face value. So while the bathroom may look great it’s probably not plumbed in, and those big spacious-feeling rooms won’t feel quite so spacious once they’re full of ‘real life’ clutter.

The aim of a show-home is to give buyers an impression; a vision; something that’s easier to imagine living in than that offered by a styro-foam model and set of blueprints. It is an example.

Tomorrow’s preview releases will be a show home for the Ubuntu touch experience.

Although what will be available is working code it shouldn’t be taken as being finished code. Start scratching the surface you’ll find the code equivalent of waxed fruit…

Similarly, though the slick video demos and screenshots show off a launcher and app tray stuffed full of a variety of apps most of these are actually just prettified links to websites – something that might be disappointing to realise should you not know in advance!

Notable app inclusions:

Dialler
Messaging App (SMS)
Basic web-browser
Gallery App
Camera App
Calculator

Notable app omissions:

No IM app
No music player
No e-mail client
No ‘App Store’
No Ubuntu One app

Of the applications that are there be prepared to encounter bugs, quirks, and the odd performance issue (e.g. pinch to zoom in the web-browser is horrendous).

So now I’ve lowered your expectations – and if I haven’t then proceed directly to the start of this post – let’s focus on the positives.

Aside from looking swish, and running pretty damn well, the intrinsic framework of Ubuntu Touch – the gestures – are in place and working. Vital stuff and it’s there from day dot.

So too are other core input methods like typing, speech recognition, selecting text, etc.

The demo apps available – gallery, calculator, messages, etc – are first class and will serve as interactive inspiration for app developers and designers alike, whilst giving curious users a hint at the sort of app experiences they can expect in the future.

And the unique interface features like ‘sidestage’, indicators, and task-switching are all present for developers to get to grips with.

Summary

The long story made short is that while tomorrow brings a release of Ubuntu Touch to the public it’s a very early, work-in-progress release that is not aimed at the general user.

ROOT YOUR PHONE no choice in this, you must to proceed

1. install adaway.

its on the market, it requires root.

2. disable autosync for your apps, leave only the essentials like google and email. go into account & sync in settings and untick them.

3. check your apps sync schedule. some sync every 5 minutes. i doubt if you need any app to sync every 5 minutes.

4. dont disable autosync completely unless you dont use the email app. it requires sync for push notifications.

5. learn to not fall into the trap of installing every app you see. there is no need for seperate apps for gtalk, facebook chat, yahoochat when just one app can do all of those! also for browsing, consider using operamini or UCBrowser, except you need javascript or flash, then you use the other full browser

6. you may also try an APP called droidwall!.
its like a firewall application that you can use to deny applications, even system applications acess to the internet.

you may use this instead of LBE privacy guard. but dont use both at the same time!!!!

for droidwall it has two modes, you either select applications that have access (whitelist) or select those that do not have access(blacklist) you can stop system aps too, but be careful which ones u block.

7. Debloat your phone. a lot of the stock OEM apps on your phone are useless, you dont use them, they use your data and they slow your phone down.

install an app called TITANIUM BACKUP. you can use that to either FREEZE any app including system apps. that way they dont show up in you app drawer or become active. (they are still on the phone and may be unfrozen
OR totally uinstall any application whatsoever, including those system apps that dont show up for removal in app manager. be careful not to remove any essentail app tho.

with the above, im very sure your data useage will reduce

NEVER EVER USE A TASK KILLER OR BATTERY DEFENDER BLA BLA BLA. IT WILL KILL YOUR BATTERY AND REALLY STRESS YOUR PHONE

FROM THE ARCHIVES grin grin grin

I GO SOON LEAVE NARIALAND, I DON DEY OLD FOR HERE grin grin grin

DATA MANAGEMENT.!

1. ROOT YOUR PHONE!
honestly, if u dont and cant root your phone, most of this tips cannot work for you. i cannot help you.
and please for the love of God STOP COMPLAINING!

2. INSTALL droidwall APPLICATION

the app requires root access!

its is a firewall application. you can use it to specify which applications have access to data at any time and which do not.
frankly this is all i do these days. i choose my apps, apply the firewall and forget about the rest. no further tweaking.

i have opera mini, twitter app (i stopped using ubersocial because it tries to load adverts, and even though i have adblock on, it still tries and keeps polling the battery), whatsapp, nimbuzz and yahoo mail (configured to check for mail every 2 hours).

if and when i need to use other apps i either open the droidwall app and add it to the whitelist, or just disable the app entirely.

OTHERWISE OR IN ADDITION=

3 INSTALL ADFREE or ADAWAY (better)

its a ad block app, requires root.
most of the free apps you use rely on loading ads for revenue for the dev, your browser also load apps, some apps are terrible eg ubersocial.

install this and run. just like adblock on your desktop browser this saves you data and battery life too.

4. INSTALL A DATA MONITOR APPLICATION.

just so u can check how much data ur actually using. some come with a function wherein u can specify how many mb u will consume before the app cuts off your access. that way u can limit your use

5. UNINSTALL SOME APPLICATIONS.

truth be told, you really do not need some of the apps you have. neither are u in a position to actually use them unless you have access to unlimited data or a good wifi. e.g youtube app

6. DISABLE AUTO UPDATE/ DO U POSITIVELY HAVE TO UPDATE EVERY APP EVERY 2 DAYS?
Its an option in your google play/market app!! do u have to update EVERY one of your about 60 apps every 3 days when updates come out?
why not schedule those for when you get free wifi or tether to anor source of data?

7. DEBLOAT YOUR PHONE
esp users of HTC and Samsung. those custom skins are just a pain in the Bottom. some come with useless apps that constantly access data

8. REMOVE OR TONE DOWN THE BLING

all the fine big boi posing with your phone is hurting your pocket, yet u come here to bore us with your tripe. all those weather widgets, twitter widgets, facebook etc etc. the SPB shell 3d etc that you are using to pose to your friend and chick come at a cost.
PhonesRe: Android, Anyone? Part II by 4llerbuntu(m): 7:21pm On Feb 14, 2013
grin grin grin grin grin

and he says he restricted data.

anyway @sniperwolf go to your applications tab under settings. all the applications u see there other than the ones u installed yourself are the ones.

search nairaland for how to use droidwall. i posted it a long time ago.

there was also another thread by somebody on data savings.

note that you must be rooted and need a firewall program like droidwall or LBE Privacy App. (highly recommended. you would be shocked at whats going on in your phone without your knowledge)

Ever heard of WiFi Direct? Native to many recent Android devices such as those of the Nexus, Xperia, and Galaxy families, WiFi Direct allow users to essential transfer files between WiFi enabled devices, in a manner similar to how many use Bluetooth file transfer.

XDA Forum Member FD_ introduced to us an app developed specifically to emulate WiFi Direct’s function, called Fast File Transfer. Available for all WiFi hotspot-enabled Android devices, Fast File Transfer offers to be a preferable Bluetooth replacement, boasting data transfer speeds of up to 20 times faster than standard Bluetooth, or more than 32 Megabytes-Per-Second which equates to 1 Gigabyte in under 5 minutes.

Once installed, Fast File Transfer adds an option to the ‘Share’ intent called Fast File Transfer. When Fast File Transfer is selected, a WiFi hotspot is activated, along with a web address or QR code that the receiving device then scans, prompting the download.

The great thing about this transfer method is that Android devices can now connect to iOS devices, which such short-range transfers were not possible thanks to Apple’s decision to not allow any non-iOS devices to connect to their products via Bluetooth.

The use of WiFi tethering function of Android phones also means that devices do not have to be connected to one, pre-existing Wi-Fi network. Therefore, no bandwidth is used, and and no additional strain is placed on your Internet connection.

Available for free to all users running Android 2.3 or newer, Fast File Transfer is well-developed and simple app for fast file transfers. More details can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941635
despite the "fanboy" label commonly bandied about this forums, i make bold to state that it is things like this that gives you very good idea of why android is what it is and other OS remain poor attempts at catching up.
