minimum requirements

the Super-Phones are the ones that will be able to be docked and transformed into a full fledged OS

i guess if you need concrete proof that folks don't ever read or notice whats posted on NL, this thread is it.

There has been a Ubuntu thread on the Computer section STICKIED for ages.

i had even purposely tried to start "wars" with texazzpete (the ever reliable bad belle peep who opposes nice things publicly grin ) just to give it some visibility and traction.

now people who post on computer section actually ask what UBUNTU is? grin grin grin grin grin

Imma start a company to push this thing for free in naija for realz man

APPS for all Ubuntu devices

Ubuntu Software Centre has been a part of Ubuntu for years, and we’ll extend it to deliver phone apps too.

Already established as the most popular way to find new software on the Ubuntu desktop, it enables Ubuntu users to download and install applications in seconds. And here’s the really amazing thing. With the arrival of the Ubuntu SDK, apps can be written to work on all Ubuntu form-factors: it’s the same Ubuntu OS on the desktop and on the phone, so a single native application can work on both. Which means you re-use most of the app when you add support for a new form-factor.
jmaine: 2014 release date is too far away to sustain any form of excitement . .by then IOS, Android and WP may have more compelling tech than what this Ubuntu show off suggest
well actually the thing is this is made by an OPENSOURCE OS company.

The OS will soon be made available for ANYONE to port to any device.
and it will be easy to port, very easy especially because it shares a kernel and can use the same hardware drivers as android phones.

what that effectively means is that by june or even earlier, you could be running this on your present android phone.

2014 is like a target for having devices that ship from the manufacturers with it pre-installed. i guess the idea is that with a full year of development and making apps, it should be ready for any willing company to present a phone.

its a lot like your desktop Ubuntu OS. most of us did not buy our desktops and laptops with ubuntu from factory. we downloaded the OS and installed it.

Nowadays there are companies making laptops etc with ubuntu from factory, but that was not how it started and not how it gained the users it has.

so its really not like the present model in the mobile world. this aims to shake things up

careytommy: abeg explain this in your quoted op
ah, ok i see.

thanks for pointing that out. its a fundamental error.
the thing is the ARM fork of the Linux kernel used to be called the android kernel, well because google forked it for android and were not really committing code changes to the main tree

that has since changed and the "android" kernel has been merged fully with the main linux kernel. hence its technically no longer the "android" kernel but the "linux" kernel simply.

i will change the OP as appropriate
PhonesRe: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op): 11:38am On Jan 03, 2013
careytommy: if its built around the Android OS, isnt it basically an Android phone same way Ubuntu OS in computers is a Linux distro?
ITS NOT BUILT AROUND OR WITH ANDROID

its a different OS.

it can use android hardware DRIVERS so can be easily flashed on any android device

it can also run on INTEL x86 hardware.

NOT EVERY FREE OS IS ANDROID ON A PHONE. JEEBUS
PhonesRe: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op): 11:05am On Jan 03, 2013
logica: The project will eventually merge with Android or die.
Seriously? That will never happen. its not android code at any level

the only thing it shares with android is the kernel, and the kernel is LINUX kernel, not android kernel.

watch the presentation video.

they may use similar tech, but its different.

if that was possible, Maemo would have been merged with android

okpara ugo: What language is that huh
Ubuntu? its a south african word, origin from the Bantu language

it was chosen as the name for the OS because the founder of canonical (the company behind ubuntu) is actually a (south african) brit.......

the idea is centered around humanity. the ubuntu motto is software for humans
with a human face, literally free.......

Archbishop Desmond Tutu offered a definition in a 1999 book:[4]

A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, based from a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

Shollypopz: Computer Science major??
He is not. perhaps you need to actually "try" ubuntu

all u need is an internet connection. its is "easier" to use compared with even windows.

try it, before you shaft it

puskin: Kk.......the Ubuntu devs are feeling itchy and very over optimistic.
Fingers crossed, lemme see(I Hope it doesn't) whether it won't go the way of Maemo.
This is NOT a general, "please back me", project like maemo. we have been doing this for years, despite of all the put downs, the talk about little mind share and user base etc etc etc. Ubuntu has kept on going and improving. why would you think this is going to get ditched?

its not a company known for taking easy choices or routes. even on the desktop. did you follow the Unity deskop shall/Gnome/mint fiasco?
a lesser company would have given up its vision.

we play to win. Our Aim with this is to have a FULL CONVERGENCE of your IT Life. seamless convergence
PhonesRe: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op): 10:38am On Jan 03, 2013
pak: bro, please be cautious, don't get too excited. You ever tried working on Maemo ?

It was essentially the same concept. Linux based ('open source' ?) OS which allows you to hack to your full.

I invested so much of my time in exploring Maemo. Installed a debian image OS on the device. Ran desktop applications directly through my debian on the N900. I did a dual boot of android and Maemo, way before android devices became really popular . . . .

And what did I get for all my effort ? The Maemo got discountinued . . .

With that 'bitter experience' , I have become skeptical of 'wonderful' ideas that are yet to gain ground.
So for now am sticking with android development. While following the Ubuntu idea (And all other innovation) from the corner of my eyes
Apples and Oranges.

1. Maemo was a project practically left on its own. Nokia backed it a bit then betrayed us.

This is backed by a committed Open Source Company. Microsoft got their mole into Nokia (Elop) and the rest is history

If you have noticed, the really thriving Linux Distros i.e Ubuntu and Red Hat are backed by companies committed to open source and not just hobbyists and profit making companies.

2. This a a Full Mobile OS, not an attempt to cramp a desktop OS on to the phone like we were doing before.

the desktop part comes with the UBUNTU FOR ANDROID project. and it is like two separate worlds existing side by side on the phone

i get the skepticism, but one thing i can vouch for is that Canonical do not take things up and ditch it along the way.

actually this is not new, the idea has been floated over 2 years ago. to see it come together is exhilarating.

i guess my fellow ubuntu users are now beginning to see why Ubuntu went with the Unity desktop and those much maligned innovations like HUD.

so, it will get supported well. believe me it will.

and thankfully, no one will come and tell us this looks like IOS or any other mobile OS out there now. so it IS possible to innovate. Linux has always innovated anyway
PhonesRe: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op): 10:18am On Jan 03, 2013
In case you are wondering why im so chuffed about this, the thing is:

You cannot begin to imagine the level of Devv-ing and hacking that will occur on this platform, no you can't

AOSP, CyanogenMod etc will be child's play compared with this.

Every thing on this WILL be fully open source and available. Nothing like complaining that binaries/blobs are closed and un-available.

I trust my guys, you will see performance at a whole new level on this. just wait for the first Binaries to be released in the next few weeks.

im willing to bet that the galaxy Nexus images will be ported so quickly to other devices
PhonesRe: Meet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op): 10:13am On Jan 03, 2013
YES UBUNTU!! dont be surprised. Open source just fully joined the Mobile Game!!!

"It's quite incredible that we're at this point when the power of the phone is crossing over that with baseline processing power of basic laptops," Mr Shuttleworth told the BBC.

"We're taking advantage of that so for the first time in history you have the full consumer PC platform available on a phone.

"I'm very confident if we look ahead over the next three to five years that's a transition that Apple is going to have to make... and if it's not Windows 9 it will be Windows 10 that will see Microsoft bring its phone and laptop together into one device. It's really cracking to do that ahead of everyone else."

A version of the code will shortly be made available to developers to start adapting their apps.

The firm then plans to release a file for Galaxy Nexus phones by February, and later for other handsets and ultimately tablet computers as well.

Any new phone built for Android with at least a dual Cortex-A9 cores, a gig of RAM and 800 x 400 resolution could run this OS, should a manufacturer see merit in installing Ubuntu instead, and high spec 720p, quad-core phones should do wonders with it.

PhonesMeet Ubuntu Phone Os. by 4llerbuntu(op):
Kindly watch the whole video presentation. and let us have your view of the idea and delivery espoused by UBUNTU PHONE OS

I AM SUPER EXCITED.

This potentially will take me away from pure android.... potentially.

Ubuntu is integrating my IT life seamlessly.

Ubuntu for phones is built around the same Linux kernel that Android uses and can use the drivers written for android, but doesn't use a Java Virtual Machine and also, it supports both ARM and x86 processors.

It's important to note that right now, Canonical tries to find manufacturers to ship with Ubuntu Phone OS, so there's not an actual phone, but only the platform.
Ubuntu phones aren’t yet available for purchase, but we are ready to start working with partners with an aim to releasing phones before the end of 2013.

Ubuntu for phones will make use of the installable web apps available in Ubuntu 12.10. Also, there's a QML-based Ubuntu SDK that developers can use to create native apps that work both on the desktop and the phone and then deliver them in the Ubuntu Software Center.

Ubuntu Phone OS comes with the same technology available in Ubuntu for Android: when docked, the phone turns into a full Ubuntu desktop

Advanced voice control

When running on phones Ubuntu can be controlled by the "head-up display" (Hud) option it introduced last year.

This allows users to type or say what command they want a program to carry out rather than having to click through menus.

"The Hud was born out of the phone design process,"

"The key question we were asking is how do we allow developers to express some of the deeper richer functionality that you get typically in a desktop application when they write for a phone.

"Typically phone and tablet applications are streamlined slimmed-down versions of stuff that might have existed in a more sophisticated complicated form on the PC.

"And in our world where all of the functionality is there... you can invoke the Hud on the phone and talk to it with voice recognition instead of typing in your command - so you could say [for instance] you want a photo in a 1930s style - and our R&grin effort is to make that natural."

I'm confused as i don't know which to choose. under d "i9100" list there is CM10 but only CM9.1 is available under d "galaxys2" list.

:::pls i want to knw if there is any difference between d two
:::Its d Cm9.1 dat i want to flash on my s2 which i believe is an international version since its not tied to any network.

::: Thanks
bro look well ooo.
if u use the international version of s2. get ROMs for that version. USE YOUR MODEL NUMBER AS REFERENCE.

anyways CM 9 or 9.1 is ICE CREAM SANDWICH.

CM 10 IS JELLYBEAN.

I don't believe there are stable builds of CM10 for S2. I think its nightly builds that are available and they are not for fainthearted folks.

the thing about CM builds is that there are STABLE MONTHLY BUILDS, and then other test builds for newer codes.

I suggest u stick to stable builds.

@ raynold, the link I have for us is XDA developers.
go to the S2 board. on the original android sub board there will be a sticky for rooting.

thing is for most Samsung phones, rooting can be easily achieved by flashing a rooted kernel. so most likely what up will be looking for is a flash able rooted stock kernel or a custom kernel that has some extra stuff built in......

Xda is the place tho.

Lol I find this comment hilarious! I really do! Are you saying Walcott benefited from Giroud or was it Giroud that actually benefited from Walcott?? Who provided the assist for both the goals Giroud scored? What role did Giroud play in any of Walcott's goals?
Theo is a gem! People might nit-pick one or two mistakes he makes but the numbers don't lie! 14 goals and 9 assists already and we are just in the halfway point of the season
Like someone pointed out earlier Theo's pace would keep opposition defences honest leaving room for the midfielders to operate! I dunno why there is this sub-conscious default feeling that you must play a plank at CF! The Arsenal setup has shown that this doesn't always work!
Make una pay the guy him money!! He's the only threat I can see against Bayern
I'm not sure i get you.

i said he played better, performed better with giroud on the pitch. that's not contradictory to what you are saying is it?

bottom line, whether he provided the assist or scored, he looked better playing off a pointsman.

unless of course u mean u could not identify what giroud's contribution was..................

air tel does not have unlimited bis plans. it all has 1gb limit.

u can however deactivate when u exhaust the 1gb and then resubscribe

Mtn bis works for sure with droidvpn

you install droidvpn. subscribe to a blackberry plan.
create a blackberry.net APN on your phone.

in droidvpn settings you select ICMP mode. connect you it. u have 100mb a day for free account. for unlimited, you subscribe for a droidvpn plan.

how to subscribe? I have no idea.

as far as I know, any other method on Mtn is hit and miss

I cannot root your phone for you unless I use or have used the type.

rather try to Google for the root method for it. I cannot do the googling for you. if u get a method and u have questions, u can ask, I would be willing to help.

I also would not jailbreak an iphone . there are lots of guys who do that on the iPhone thread.

Hmnn. Finally sat down to watch an arsenal match for a while and it was yet another high blood pressure joy ride. Fook me..

I'm damn sure sagna spent the night having s-e-x. Ninja was so off the pace it was absurd.

Contrary to the general opinion, this match simply reinforced my belief that as long as Wenger sticks to playing just one striker, it should not be walcott.

The yoyo was annoying. The game kept flowing both ways simply because our attack was not mixing it up, holding up the ball and getting stuck in. The purists may not agree but attrition is a major part of football, premier league especially.

Our 'rolls royce' attack kept trying to pass the ball into space for runs, when the ball got to Walcott, if it required more that three touches it was a waste of time. Hey, we scored seven but on the days when such spaces and chances are at a premium... ...................

For me Walcott looked even better, and had more time and space when Giroud came on. A big man, small man combo would be worth exploring but this is Wenger we talking about. Ain't gonna happen.

Jack, trying too hard.

Koscielny, warrahell man even mertersacker is looking like a better choice these days, he needs to up his awareness and and overall game.

The Ox is NOT a winger. Simple.

podolski, keeps on shaming dayokanu and his cohorts. Keep it up son, such tenacity endears you to English fans.

Goalkeeper....... hey man, thumbs up. Awesome for such a youngster.

Giroud is in danger of being a very very excellent striker I see. The difference between the midget upfront and him was so obvious even the charlatans beside me noticed that the attack simply gained substance with his entrance.
Ten more goals man, ten more....... I will give us my neighbours almost tear rubber daughter for free

Wenger. Shit puffa jacket. Feeling like a badt guy making great subs.... shioor. Great game for once.

PhonesRe: Android, Anyone? Part II by 4llerbuntu(m): 2:17pm On Dec 29, 2012
To make a usb OTG cable.

U need
1. Regular microsub to usb cable.
The normal cable you use to charge or connect your phone to the pc

2. A usb to usb extension cable. One with male and female ends. The female end is the one u can plug another usb device into while the male end is the end u plug into a pc

3 razor blades

4. Some tape. Preferably black tape.

5. Super glue. For a neat job...........

6. A pin or needle

6. A bit of thick copper. Like that in power cable. Also for a neat job.

Step 1

Get both cables and cut them into half, or rather consider how long you would prefer the OTG cable to be when cutting them. en

You will get four thin wires in each, of different colors.

Strip off a little of each wire, join them together following the color codes. Tape them carefully SEPARATELY SO THEY DONT BRIDGE.

JOIN THE END THAT U CAN PLUG A USB INTO TO THE MICROUSB END.

Those wires are very light n thin, especially if the cables u are using are the cheap variety so be careful.

I suggest that u put both cables side by side and use the thick copper to join them tight, so as to prevent the joint from cutting off during use. Like i did with my finished cable.

Tape it up

2 now get the microusb end open.
Cables vary. Some have a plastic case that can be easily removed, some have thick rubber that looks moulded. Of that second type u need to cut carefully along the edge on both sides and peel the rubber back to show the wires connected to the plug underneath.

Be careful not to get any of them cut off the plug else u will need a solder iron or a new cable.

When u get underneath u will see FOUR cables connected to plug.
We are concerned with the right edge where the black wire is. There is a small pin beside that black wire that is unused.
We need to connect that pin to the black.move

On some cables, the pins are easy to see and exposed. Some are shielded with plastic. If its the shielded type, gently use a needle or pin to break the plastic around the black and empty pins. BE CAREFUL.................

What i did without needing solder was get a little copper wire strand, gently move THE EMPTY PIN TO THE BLACK PIN AND TWIST THE WIRE STRAND AROUND THEM TIGHT....

Its at the edge so i can do that.

Now try to gently plug in ur MICROUSB END into the phone and plug a flash or mouse TO THE FEMALE END.

I guess u should also know this will only work if you are running ICS or JELLYBEAN

It should get detected.

Remove and use superglue to seal the rubber or plastic back.

U have ur own home built Usb OTG cable.

Its easy to do esp if you are used to doing little stuff before.
