Villa won't finish in the top 4, for various reasons, primarily their squad is too thin. I expect them to drop off in the 2nd half of the season, they probably won't even be contending for the top 4 by March.

Nevertheless, you can't help but laugh at an Arsenal side whose primary goal this season is to finish in the top 4. Is Wenger still ''rebuilidng''. . . this sort of rebuilding reminds me of those never-ending construction projects in Nigeria.

The Iraqi dictator was so secretive and kept information so compartmentalized that his top military leaders were stunned when he told them three months before the war that he had no weapons of mass destruction, and they were demoralized because they had counted on hidden stocks of poison gas or germ weapons for the nation's defense.
It's amazing how hindsight bias weaves its magic on people's perceptions. 6 years ago, the debate was not so much about Saddam's possession of WMDs, which was universally accepted as embodied in the unanimous UNRSC 1441, but the means of tackling the threat Saddam posed.

The objective of the Iraq war was regime change. That objective was accomplished with remarkable dexterity, albeit, great costs to Americans.

People bemoan the costs of the war ,in lives and wealth, but a computation of costs is pointless if one fails to compute the costs of the alternative options. Without doubt, the war costs for Americans far outstrips the alternate costs. However, same argument can be made for just about any conflict the US has engaged in. If the US had pursued a non-interventionist treaty with the Axis powers, it would have saved the US hundreds of thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars.

Indeed, one can fashion an argument for perpetual inaction on the part of the US on the grounds of costs in US lives and wealth, from Kosovo to Bosnia to Iraq.

The key argument really is whether the overall costs, to the world in general, are worth it. I believe they are. Nobody who is not an ahistorical naif would fail to appreciate the danger Saddam posed to his people and the region. We all mourn the current loss of lives, as if lives were not loss throughout Saddam's tenure. Any wonder that many Iraqis aided the invasion?

We deplore the lack of WMDs, as if anthrax, botulinum and these other agents of destruction cannot be produced and weaponised within months. The need to incarcerate a recidivist date rapist is not diminished by his lack of possession  of rohypnol at any given time.

Saddam's terror, both towards his people and his neighbours, warranted action. Not even the Iraqi people miss Saddam, neither should we.

Una don see this Times story?

Luiz Felipe Scolari is facing a growing challenge to his authority from the dressing-room in light of Chelsea’s recent poor performances. The Times understands that the Chelsea manager was asked to explain his substitutions by several senior players after the 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday.

Chelsea’s players have a genuine fondness for Scolari as a man, but there are increasing concerns over certain aspects of his management. The latest worries to emerge centre on Scolari’s substitutions against West Ham, with several players demanding to know in a dressing-room meeting why Michael Ballack was replaced at half-time rather than the underperforming Deco, who stayed on for the entire 90 minutes.

It is not the first time that Scolari’s substitutions have been subject to scrutiny by his players. It is understood that in the aftermath of last month’s 2-1 home defeat by Arsenal, several players asked sarcastically whether Scolari was aware that Chelsea were chasing the game rather than attempting to hold on, because they were unimpressed by his decision to bring on the inconsistent Florent Malouda and inexperienced Miroslav Stoch for John Obi Mikel and Deco. Chelsea’s run of only one win in five home league matches has brought such complaints to the surface, but there have been concerns about some of Scolari’s methods all season. John Terry and Frank Lampard went to see the manager a fortnight ago to ask if the intensity of training sessions could be increased and several others have admitted in private that Chelsea are lacking the physical power with which they used to swat opponents aside even while playing badly under José Mourinho. Another complaint muttered in private concerns alleged preferential treatment of Deco, who has remained in the side despite contributing little since he returned from a thigh injury in October.

There is also concern that some players are struggling to understand Scolari’s instructions, as appeared to be the case against West Ham. Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Joe Cole played close together in a front three after Drogba’s introduction in place of Ballack at half-time, with Scolari clearly frustrated with their performance.

The Brazilian admitted afterwards that he needs more time to work with his players on the training ground, but that is not a luxury afforded in the Premier League, when the top teams play matches every three days.

Scolari retains the support of the club’s board — as well as some measure of sympathy given the injuries he has encountered this season — but it is open in admitting that results have not been as good as was expected when he was appointed last summer.

While Roman Abramovich, the owner, has remained in the background, Peter Kenyon, the chief executive, and Eugene Tenenbaum, a director and Abramovich’s closest aide, have been regular visitors to the dressing-room in recent weeks. Chelsea, however, insist this is normal practice at the club but declined to comment further.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: French Ligue 1, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, Dutch Eredivisi And Bundesliga by 4Play(m): 2:28am On Dec 15, 2008
I didn't watch the Juve vs Milan game (how much football can one take in one weekend?) But I saw Hoffenhiem vs Schalke. I thought the game showed why Hoffenheim won't win the title, they seemed unnerved by the mere prospect of finishing as ''winter champions'' and couldn't press home their one-man advantage. Engelaar eventually got sent off as well.

Did anybody see Lyon vs Marseille? It was a drab performance but I was impressed with Hatem Ben Arfa. Arsenal did miss a great opportunity to sign him, save for his petulance, he is one of the best dribblers in today's game.

Because Bayern beat Lyon, we no go hear word again. huh Check out Lyon's recent performances in Ligue 1, they are clearly going through a rough patch so Bayern played them at a propitious time. That Bayern team will be taken apart by stronger teams because, for all their attacking qualities, their defence is non-existent.

One thing about the UCL that people don't factor in is that a lot will change by February. Barca might not be in the same shape as they are today, sides like Real and Chelsea might be in the form of their lives

You are a rare breed . . . .  . . .  not that I would expect any woman to admit to giving a hoot.  grin

The emotionally incontinent ones will blurt out a few snide remarks every now and then, the more ''restrained'' ones will stick to subtle acts of aggression.

What I can't get is the glaring contradiction: Naija men are 'less civilised', verging on the barbaric, yet one of the ''perks' of living in the West is that you are perfectly capable of discarding of Nigerian men. Yet, if a Naija woman has an inkling that you are dating a white woman, she will react like she has suffered an  anaphylactic  shock. One would expect they should be delighted and that they too will seek only white male partners.
