I think the study was done for you and Doyin's sake. Doyin even uses Latin phrases that make no sense. As the late Samuel Johnson would say, he is inebriated in the exuberance of his verbosity. grin

There is even a paper, it won the IG Nobel, on prolixity:Consequences of erudite vernacular utilized irrespective of necessity: problems with using long words needlessly by Daniel Oppenheimer.

I can't imagine many other reasons why 500 men with weapons would be on their way towards a war zone.
Yes, I wonder whether they were also proceeding in military formation. 5th Battalion of the 9th Egunje Brigade all surrendered to Nigerian "security operatives" without a fight.

Just try and hold on to that 4th place. If this false sense of achievement stops Wenger from buying in January, all the better.

It's not funny. A cutlass can kill as effectively as a gun if the potential victims are unarmed.
I don't know about you, but I think it's a good thing that those 500 men were intercepted.
You don't know Naija police again? They can just grab 500 young men, armed or not.

Some people might be carrying weapons to protect themselves. After money changes hand, most will be released.

Who remembers Yakubu from the Nigerian FA Cup back in the days? Was it NEPA Lagos he played for then?

I remember one dude -James Terna - who was playing for NEPA Lagos. This dinosaur claimed to be 14. According to Sports Souvenir(a popular Naija sports weekly), European scouts took one look at him and decided the lie was too much.

Ultimately, I think Southerners are held back by Northerners, the sooner we split up the better. However, while we are together, we need to strenghten the security services and judicial system to maintain law and order.

A lot of these problems will dissipate in the long run with greater prosperity. Because of poverty, a lot of wealth is concentrated in political office which increases the incentive to "fight" for it. Also, a lot of the land disputes that you have between indigenes/settlers stem from deprivation.

There is no universal consensus as to what constitutes genocide but to the extent that this conflict is an attempt to destroy a people on the basis of their ethnicity or religion, I think it qualifies as genocide.

@Topic

This topic smacks of self-assured infantilism. When folks start to construct an idealized image of a bad girl/boy, with list to boot, they forsake reality for juvenile fantasizing. Of course, we are only on a web forum but I do glean a certain ''seriousness'' to the issue from the OP and some others.

One of the simplest messages in life is to "be yourself" . Simplistic but profound. Don't try to live up to an image, especially of a delinquent inclination. Unless you are stuck in a time warp, you should have discarded this sort of hogwash in your teens.

What is the biggest image issue that plagues black women? Living up to the image of the "strong black woman".  Guys also want to ''keep it real''. From such idealizations, miserable lives are built.

Finished my rant grin

PoliticsRe: How Taxes Work by 4Play(m): 1:42am On Nov 27, 2008
KnowAll:
The practicality of Taxes can be explained by a simple anology - Assuming there are 10, 000 un-employed graduates in Lagos State. if the state govt employs these 10,000.00 with a starting salary of N50,000.00 per month the whole exercise would cost the state govt N500 Million.

The state has fufilled its moral obligation to it citizens. The beauty of taxes is some of these money can be clawed back into the states coffers as taxation.

Assumming Taxation is 22% of gross income it will mean that each of those 10,000.00 graduates will be paying back N11,000.00 back to the state that will give the state an income tax of for the month of N110 Million it will mean that the total money spent on this set of graduates is now N390 Million.

The State will now look for a way of clawing back some of the N390 Million through indirect taxation.

Examples of indirect Taxation includes surcharging on petrol at the pumps, airport Tax, VAT or value added tax and Community rates.

The Community rates should be minimal payed by all employees in the state N30 per month or N3,000.00 per year.

Our graduate who was originally on N50,000.00 is now down to N36000.00 and clawing back contnues. This narration is just a simplistic way of how taxes work.

You can see that although the state spent N500 Million employ these graduates but has manged to claw back 1/3 of the money. A good adminstrator will develop a more astute and clever way of clawing in back more of these income for the state.
This is such muddled thinking. The State hands over N500m in wages and then looks to "claw that back" from the very same people it handed the money to through taxation? What then is the net benefit to the economy?

In reality, what happens in the West is that the State taxes or borrows from the private sector and spends it on the general populace, mostly on the less well off. In the US, 50% of the working population pays 97% of the taxes.

The state itself doesn't create wealth. It simply takes from individuals, mainly the wealthy, and spends it according to its priorities.

South Korea's Daewoo Logistics have taken a 99-year lease of 1.3m hectares of Mozambique's arable land for free - effectively, half of the African island nation's arable land.

There are 2 major problems with this deal; there is no down payment by Daewoo for the land and almost all of its produce is meant for immediate exportation to South Korea. Mozambique is currently undergoing food shortages.

However, there are potential export earnings to be made, coupled with the employment opportunities, though,a lot of workers will be imported from South Africa

Daewoo Logistics of South Korea said it expected to pay nothing to farm maize and palm oil in an area of Madagascar half the size of Belgium, increasing concerns about the largest farmland investment of this kind.

The Indian Ocean island will simply gain employment opportunities from Daewoo’s 99-year lease of 1.3m hectares, officials at the company said. They emphasised that the aim of the investment was to boost Seoul’s food security.

“We want to plant corn there to ensure our food security. Food can be a weapon in this world,” said Hong Jong-wan, a manager at Daewoo. “We can either export the harvests to other countries or ship them back to Korea in case of a food crisis.”

Daewoo said it had agreed with Madagascar’s government that it could cultivate 1.3m hectares of farmland for free when it signed a memorandum of understanding in May. When the company signed the contract in July, it agreed to discuss costs with Madagascar. But Daewoo now believes it will have to pay nothing.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Economy Under Threat As Oil Falls Below $50 A Barrel by 4Play(m): 10:54pm On Nov 24, 2008
You miss my point - I am not talking about oil exporters such as Saudi Arabia and co with easy to produce already verified oil deposits. I am speaking about the IOC's who need to develop and increase capacity through developing new reserves and these will inevitably not be cost effective or profitable at a 25-30 range.

Granted that the run up to $100+ oil is not sustainable, but that was fed by certain factors. The reason oil exporting nations such as OPEC were happy with $22 was due to the oil glut in 1999 when oil went down to $9 - so double that price was feasible for them, but the direct consequence of oil remaining at $22-$30 for so long was that insufficient extra supply was coming on from other sources, leading to the sharp run up in prices recently.

The fact is, new reserves such as Petrobras' Tupi field, and other major deep offshore fields cannot be developed in a sub $50 price range, neither can oil sands - If the west wants to get these resources, oil below $50 will negate those efforts and dry up investment. Many of such projects in Canadian Oil Sands and deep offshore are not feasible below a 50-60 range.
The key thing to bear in mind is that the optimal price of oil for exporters/importers differs depending on the economic circumstances. For a short-term horizon, say 1-3 years, most oil importers struggled with $40-$50 p/b oil in the best of times. There is simply no way these oil importers, in the present economic climate, can cope with a sustained oil price within the $60-$80 p/b range.

That much of the best oil prospects today require much higher oil prices to be economically viable is besides the point. Oil majors have long term horizons, a rapid short term decline in oil prices will not by itself deter their investment plans.

Over the longer term a spike in oil prices, which is inevitable given future demand trends, will suffice but for reasons other than what you stated. It's in the best interest of oil importers to move away from fossil fuels and the relative pricey nature of oil will make alternative energy more viable and spur investment in the latter.

However, in the prevailing economic conditions, the world cannot cope with $60-$80 p/b oil.

- we could easily say that about the white vote. Remember PUMA?
- There's no hiding the fact that much of the black vote went for Obama but he didnt get there on the back of the black vote alone. I wouoldnt blame blacks either, this was one opportunity too good to pass up.
I don't see how you can equate bloc voting by Blacks(reaching 96-04) to bloc voting by Whites. Lets face it, if Whites voted like Blacks, Obama wouldn't stand a chance. Put a black skin on Clinton, a white skin on Obama, and Blacks will be proclaiming Obama is a clueless buffoon.

What I don't get is why people are in denial that race motivated a lot of black voters, both in turnout and actual preferences, from the primaries to the grand finale.

True. My point is, allow the man to start and fail first before we start sounding the drums of cynicism.
Lets wait until he fails. At least Bush got a long rope before he hung himself.
In which democratic country do you know of where people "wait" for the politicians to fail before carping about his abilities?
Foreign AffairsRe: "this Little Light Of Mine. . ." by 4Play(m): 1:51pm On Nov 24, 2008
DavidDylan:
You claim - During the primaries and continuing on to the general election campaigns we discussed political choices and how Americans, but Blacks in particuler, just blandly accept candidates without thoroughly understanding the policies they are pushing and how this truly end up becoming a painful outcome for the voters.

Blacks voted enmasse for Clinton . . .

88% of Blacks voted for Gore, the rest of America enthusiastically embraced Bush TWICE. Now how is that the fault of blacks? Are blacks the only ones guilty of "blandly accepting candidates"?

Ok lets assume Obama was nothing but rhetoric, do you honestly believe McCain was a better alternative?

I am sick and tired of this premature crucifixion of Obama. He hasnt even been president and Faux news and their sidekicks like you are already crying about the coming apocalypse.

Una just type sha . . .
This canard about the Black vote for Obama having nothing to do with race should have been put to bed when Blacks voted overwhelmingly for Obama against Clinton. . . . .policy wise, how different is Clinton from Obama?

Obama's term never start and you are already getting sick of criticism grin Sit back and relax, the invectives will mount, often to sickening proportions, over the coming years. When you consider how divisive American politics is - nearly half of Democrats believe Bush had a hand in 9-11 - Obama Derangement Syndrome never even start.

In the coming years, Blacks' affection for Obama will be untethered from his actual performance a la Ray Nagin, Mayor Kwame or William "Cold Cash " Jefferson of Louisiana. We will probably see greater racial divide as non- Blacks turn on the President and Blacks get ultra-defensive.
