Babayo Gamawa, the former deputy national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, who defected to the All Progressives Congress Tuesday after he was suspended by the PDP, is accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of a N500 million fraud.

Mr Gamawa is standing trial alongside five chieftains of the PDP in Bauchi State for alleged receipt of illicit N500 million for the 2015 campaigns of the party.

The money, according to the anticorruption agency, the EFCC, was part of the slush funds allegedly deployed for the elections by ex-petroleum minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke.
The commission charged Mr Gamawa and other accused persons before a federal high court in Bauchi, in June, 2018.

PREMIUM TIMES could not establish the progress of the case at the time of filing this report.

Welcomed with open arms

The corruption case against him, notwithstanding, he was welcomed with open arms by the APC, hours after he was suspended for alleged anti-party activities by the PDP.

Mr Gamawa was received by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Tuesday evening.

The politician was led to the president by Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abubakar, and was joined by another defector, Kaulaha Aliyu, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees.

A spokesperson for Mr Buhari, Femi Adesina, shared pictures of his boss and Mr Gamawa late on Tuesday, describing the latter as a “new entrant into APC”.


While sharing the pictures of visit, Mr Adesina wrote: “President Buhari receives in audience New Entrant into APC Former Deputy National Chairman of PDP Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa and Hon. Kaulaha Aliyu alongside Bauchi State Governor in State House on 8th Jan 2019”.

Accused of fiddling with the ruling party and dereliction of duties, Mr Gamawa’s former party announced his suspension Tuesday morning.

The national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Mr Gamawa was suspended by the National Working Committee (NWC), following a petition.

He said the committee held an extraordinary session on January 5, where it reviewed the petition against the deputy national chairman.

“The NWC found merit in the petition on allegation of dereliction of duty and anti-party activity as contained in Section 58 (1) e, f, g, h of the PDP Constitution.

“Therefore, in exercise of section 29 (2) a, b and c, the NWC hereby invokes Section 59 (1) d of the constitution of the PDP on the Deputy National Chairman (North) and accordingly suspends him from the party immediately.”

The police on Friday acknowledged that controversial senator, Dino Melaye, has surrendered days after the police laid siege to his house in Abuja.

The police laid siege to Mr Melaye’s house last week Friday after the lawmaker allegedly refused to appear before the police for questioning. He is wanted for his alleged role in the shooting of a police officer who is still in the hospital, the police said.

Authorities say the embattled Senator is pretending to be ill. Police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood says all tests conducted on the Senator proved negative.

The adoption of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State, Senator John Owan- Enoh, by 15 governorship candidates and their political parties as consensus candidate has been condemned by members of the Peoples Democratic Party and other groups in the state.

While the PDP accused the APC of faking the adoption , the latter also claimed the former had paid a huge amount to get a similar endorsement for the incumbent state governor, Prof . Ben Ayade

Owan- Enoh was , last Tuesday , endorsed by candidates of the KOWA Party, Alliance for Democracy , Mega Party and Action Alliance and National Conscience Party, among others .

It was learnt that some money was given to the candidates with a promise to form a government involving members of the alliance if elected .

But the Director - General of Owan-Enoh Campaign Organisation, Mr Maurice Effiwatt , said no condition was given and that no money was paid to the other party candidates .

This came a few months after Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State was similarly adopted by several groups , including the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress .

Money was also reportedly given to the groups .
Reacting to the development , a former state Chairman of the PDP , Chief John Okon, said the adoption of the state APC governorship candidate was a non- issue .

Okon, who is also a member of the 2019 PDP election campaign council, said , “ The so- called 15 political parties are no parties . They only exist on paper. You know that there are only two political parties in the state, the PDP and the APC . The Social Democratic Party is just coming up.

“ The governorship election is just a two - horse race between Governor Ben Ayade and Senator Owan Enoh. Those parties are not as serious as the PDP and the APC . Why are they stepping down if they are relevant ? What they did was a political gimmick to deceive people that they are relevant. ”

But the running mate to Owan-Enoh , Chief Ekpo Okon, said , “ These are people who have been celebrating their procured endorsements . In our own case , people of conscience endorsed a credible candidate . We accepted because the adoption came from the heart. ”
