IsThisChange: 2019 polls: Parties to meet Dec 11 to sign peace accord
As part of measures to ensure the success of the 2019 general elections, all registered political parties will on December 11 in Abuja formally signed a peace accord for the conduct of the elections.
The National Peace Committee headed by a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) said this in Abuja on Thursday at the end of a marathon meeting with the parties and other stakeholders.
While presenting the resolutions of the meeting, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Hassan Kukah, said the parties have resolved to adopt the same principles that guided the success of 2015 elections as a template for ensuring that all stakeholders commit themselves to peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections.
He said the committee and political parties discussed extensively on the need to ensure that politicians create a favourable and conducive environment for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in 2019. “We discussed the theme of trust as a key ingredient in the conduct of our affairs.
“In the end we have resolved to adopt the same principles that guided the very successful in 2015 elections and therefore commit ourselves to run issues-based campaigns at national, state and local government levels.
“In this, we pledge to refrain from campaigns that will involve religious incitement, ethnic or tribal profiling, both by ourselves and by all agents acting in our names,” Kukah said.
The committee said political parties and politicians must refrain from making or sponsoring public statements, pronouncements, declarations or speeches that have the capacity to incite any form of violence, before, during, and after the elections.
It said that the parties are also expected commit themselves to monitoring the adherence to the provisions of the peace accord and to support institutions of government and the security agencies to act and be seen to act with impartiality.
The committee said the parties and politicians are to forcefully and publicly speak against provocative utterances and oppose all acts electoral violence whether perpetrated by supporters or opponents.

Politics › Re: Sign Electoral Act Amendment Now, Atiku Urges Buhari by 6digitscomrade: 8:48am On Nov 30, 2018 |
comos: ABUJA—Presidential candidate of PDP in the 2019 elections and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law, the Electoral Act amendment, if he is really interested in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council yesterday in Abuja, Atiku said that signing the Electoral Act was necessary because elections were governed by laws and that good laws were required to ensure credible elections. “Such laws constrain the behaviour of all who are involved in the electoral process, including the candidates and their supporters, security agents and the electoral umpire,” Atiku said.
He predicted that the 2019 Presidential election would be tough based on what he called the desperation of the APC-led government to cling to power at all costs. “We are facing an APC government that is desperate to cling to power at all costs, which means that this will be a tough Presidential election,” he added. He said he was not surprised that the APC government was running a campaign of “personal attacks and innuendo,” which he said was caused by the party’s failure to keep its promises to Nigerians.

Education › Re: NANS Reacts To Fg’s Reduction Of Jamb, Neco Fees, Speaks On ASUU Strike by 6digitscomrade: 3:45pm On Nov 29, 2018 |
Jason555: The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Thursday, applauded the Federal Government for reducing the cost of JAMB and NECO application forms. DAILY POST reports that the Federal Government, after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, announced the reduction in JAMB fee from N5,000 to N3,500 for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The amount charged for Senior Secondary Certificate Examination by the National Examination Council (NECO) was also reduced from 11,350 to N9,850 and Basic Education Certificate handled by NECO was slashed from N5,500 to N4,000. The reductions take effect from January, 2019.
NANS’ National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, while reacting in a statement issued in Enugu on Thursday, commended the decision, NAN reports.
Okereafor, however, urged the Federal Government to prioritise the issue of education, and especially the ongoing ASUU/COEASU strike. According to him, the strike has truncated the chances of “some of our compatriots graduating in 2018, simply because the academic calendar has been altered”.
The statement continued: “NANS considers this decision as a good and progressive minded one, but strongly believes that resolving the ongoing ASUU/COEASU strikes would be better.
“We are of the opinion that schools must be made conducive for all students on campuses as it was in the days of old.
“The Presidency must consider making our campuses a conducive atmosphere for learning and research purposes.
“It is highly disheartening that we have lost quite a handful of young, hardworking and promising Nigerian students to the cold hands of death due to the ongoing strike.
“Even as some of our students are now been exposed to various crimes, and drugs. For an idle hand they say is the devil’s workshop.’’
Okereafor, however, appealed to the leadership of ASUU not to frustrate the process of negotiation with the Federal Government, rather consider suspending the strike in the best interest of all concerned.

Lukgaf: Dear nairalanders,
Why things are done differently in Nigeria? Of all airports I have been to, it is so embarrassing, only Nigeria's airports (Muritala Muhammad Airport in particular) collect money for trolley from customers arriving/departing the country. The most unfortunate part is, those guys in charge sometimes pretend they do not have change so that you can forfeit your remaining money. If you tell them you don't have money, they will even ask you to bring foreign currency...
It is very disheartening because foreigners are been asked to pay before they can take/use too. Imagine, what they will be saying about our country when they get to their place?
We call on the Federal Government to kindly see to this.
Please, let's keep sharing this till it gets to those in charge. Enough of all these international embarrassments in our airport. bro..my advice is anyone coming to Nigeria should always have atleast 3k naira because i fell victim several times because of the anomaly u pointed out...Many times they will take currencies from me to help change it while i stay with my baggage and that's bye bye trolley man has disappeared and u will have to do it all over again with another who will claim to be a Christian and eventually still come back to u and explain the rate at airport is bad etc....Meanwhile u are stressed and want to exit the stuffy environment with poachers, stalkers and extortionists in uniforms... Mandynews: Morocco gets Africa’s first high-speed train. It’s the fastest line in Africa.
The new trains are made by manufacturer Alstom and can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour.
They will cut the journey time between the two cities by more than half to just over two hours. This is double the speed of South Africa’s Gautrain, launched in 2012, which falls short of the criteria for high-speed rail.
The $2 billion project has been in development for a decade, funded by the governments of Morocco, France, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE.
King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan government expect the trains to deliver wealth and prestige for the country. But opponents claim they are an expensive folly.
These high-speed trains are flashing along the Atlantic coast of Morocco.

deji17: Nigeria rises on world prosperity index — first time ever November 28
Nigeria recorded a leap on the 2018 Legatum Prosperity Index (LPI) of most prosperous countries in the world.
At 129, the most populous black nation moved up by three points from its 132nd position in 2017. Since the inception of the index in 2006, this is the first time that Nigeria would move up.
The LPI is an annual ranking developed by the Legatum Institute, a division of the United Arab Emirates-based private investment firm, Legatum.
The index measures prosperity using nine pillars: economic quality, business environment, governance, personal freedom, social capital, safety and security, education, health and natural environment.
Of these pillars, Nigeria ranked 139, 66, 107, 111, 48, 145, 123,143, 104 positions respectively.
While the giant of Africa rose 12 places on the business environment pillar, it fell one point in safety and security.
“In the overall Prosperity Index rankings, Nigeria has climbed by three positions from 132 to 129 when compared to last year. Since the Prosperity Index began in 2006, Nigeria has moved down the rankings table by five places,” the report read.
“In the Prosperity Pillar rankings, Nigeria performs best on Social Capital and Business Environment and scores lowest on the Safety and Security pillar.
“The biggest positive change, compared to last year, came in Business Environment increasing by 12 places, whereas they dropped one place on Safety and Security.”
Despite Nigeria’s rise on the ranks, the country, however, falls among the 20 least prosperous countries (red zone) and the report says “those in the bottom 20 face significant challenges across all pillars, especially in improving Safety and Security.”
In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria is ranked 25th.
Norway, New Zealand and Finland topped the index, while Yemen, Central African Republic and Afghanistan came last three respectively.
“The measurement of national prosperity is an important task for governments and for those who hold them to account,” the report read.
“Prosperity entails much more than wealth, it reaches beyond the financial into the political, the judicial, and the wellbeing and character of a nation – it is about creating an environment where a person is able to reach their full potential. A nation is prosperous when it has an open economy, inclusive society, strong institutions and empowered people who are healthy, educated and safe. This leads to higher levels of wellbeing.
“The Prosperity Index covers 149 countries. The top 40 most prosperous nations are those that have demonstrated over time how to build prosperity. Those in the bottom 20 face significant challenges across all pillars, especially in improving Safety and Security.
“Prosperity has grown over the last year to its highest ever point. In the last five years, 113 countries have improved their prosperity. In many respects the world is getting better. It is now easier to start a business in many countries.”

Crime › Re: Police Refused To Hand Over My Stolen Keke To Me After It Was Recovered by 6digitscomrade: 6:00pm On Nov 28, 2018 |
Karatum: Please guys, I need your suggestions and opinions on this.
I reside in onitsha and here goes my story.
I bought a keke and gave it to a young guy on hire purchase. Unfortunately, the keke was stolen the same Sunday that the guy I gave it to - drove it home. Its a brand new keke. I went to the police to make entry about the stolen keke.
After about a week, I got a call from some police guys at Enugu state police command, that I should come down to Enugu state - as my keke was found somewhere in Nsukka. The police guys demanded that I come with 50k to 'bail out' the keke. Luckily for me, the keke was found same way it was stolen and also, the thief was caught too.
I sourced for money and went down to Enugu to bail out the recovered keke. After parting with 30k, I was handed over the keke and was asked to go to obosi station to write and sign that the keke has been found. The police guys from Enugu drove the suspect down to obosi (anambra state). According to them, that's the jurisdiction where the keke was stolen.
On getting to Obosi station, the police there demanded for some money and I told them that I had nothing left on me after parting away with 30k for the Enugu police guys. Next thing they did was that they decided to seize the keke, saying it will be "charged to court with the suspect".
My question is; Arent the police suppose to hand over a recovered property to a victim of theft? What do I do? I am very confused now as to next action to take. bro ok let me think of something because I'm so so stunned because i feel u telling my story...Diz same shit happened to me about 14yrs ago but mine was a jincheng brand new bike..And i recovered it myself by luck after months....But somehow everything landed with the cops...The truth is u will get it but u will spend money...Even accident victims bail themselves from the police who were supposed to save them and if they get to the hospital the doctors who swore to save them will threaten to abandon them except miraculously they part with cash... Don't get it twisted bro..I wish u can understand and i hope u will understand that i ain't saying it's right but an average nigerian doesn't and might never know what it's like living in a normal society... Everyone in that country understands this...I feel ur pain trust me...But for peace to reign of whatever u av left just give them and put the misery behind u.. Don't let anyone mislead u..Even if u know a police man the best he can do for u is to reduce ur stress but u will still part with cash and inturn be in indebted to him.. I have seen it all bro...there is no honor amongst thieves.. |
