where is MASSOB when we need them.
Imagine even in America, people are committing crime against igbos.

let us have a sit-at-home to mourn the death of Solmon James Okoroh and demand justice. igbo killings must end. Join me on June 8th.

pleep: Do you realize that Nigeria has not entered the industrial age by 2013?

While America entered it in 1865, England in 1750. Does that not sound a little bit ridiculous to you? If we want to analyse the interplay between the public and private sectors of pre-industrial Nigeria we have to compare it to the events in the pre-industrial west... not on the service based economies of modern Europe.

At this point in Africa development = industrilization, any other objective is wasting time. No nation has ever become a HDC without this step
something u also omit is that America fought a whole civil war over whether or not it will adopt industrialization. Talk about invisible hand. politics certainly had nothing to do with it. You mention 1865. hmm I wonder what just ended during that time. hint hint civil war. and I wonder what that war was about hmm. u don't need slaves when u have technology. wow light bulb.

there is also something called patents and intellectual rights that enable industries to become rich at the expense of smaller business. again, state laws and regulations have nothing to do with this grin

PoliticsRe: Soldiers Flood Anambra Over Massob's Sit-at-home Order by 99cent:
MASSOB had through its Director and Deputy Director of Information, Uche Madu and Mazi Chris Mocha warned that it would deal ruthlessly with any body who refused to observe the Sit-At-Home order.
Let's be honest with ourselves, most non-igbos could care less whether or not MASSOB is beating up their fellow igbos or dealing with them ruthlessly. In fact, I was actually looking forward to the house arrest sit-at-home order hahahhaha let the igbo people suffer in the hands of their new MASSOB dictators.

But of course, Peter Obi doesn't want MASSOB to overthrow him so he sent in the state troops and soldiers. Let's be honest with ourselves, as long as MASSOB carries out its intimidation within its borders, Nigerian government could care less. It is the Igbo state governments that are bringing in troops since MASSOB is threatening state power throughout the SE. as long as they stay in their borders, we don't care. let igbo people take care of their own business. even if it means that another 50 bodies will wash up a river tomorrow grin

what a joke. instead of them to be worrying about their own internal problems.
PoliticsRe: MASSOB Declares June 8 Sit-at-home, Demands Rev. King’s Release by 99cent: 12:34am On Jun 08, 2013
chosen04: From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has declared June 8, 2013 Biafra public holiday and sit-at-home throughout Igbo land to mark the brutal killing of six Igbo men at Apo in Abuja. Addressing journalists, the MASSOB Director for Information, Mr. Uchenna Madu said the sit-at-home exercise is to honour the six victims of what he called police extra judicial killings against Ndigbo. “As you are aware, six innocent Ndigbo were killed in Apo, Abuja, extra-judicially on June 8, 2005, by policemen led by a Deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Ibrahim Danjuma.

Seven years after the multiple murder of our people, the principal suspect in the said murder, Ibrahim Danjuma is walking the streets a freeman” He further called for implementation of the report of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the incident, adding that all those indicted in the senseless killing must be brought to book to serve as deterrent to others. “You may recall that the Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice Olasumbo Goodluck had exonerated APO 6 victims from the armed robbery allegation levelled against them by the police but several years after, nothing has been heard of the matter while an Igbo man, Rev Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, (alias REV. KING) who allegedly murdered one of his church members, was concluded, within six months in 2006. Rev, King today is in prison waiting to be hanged” he said.

Mr. Madu also said the APO 6 killing, is one of the numerous killings of Ndigbo in Nigeria that have gone with little or no consequence, adding: “ It is due to the insecurity of lives and property of Ndigbo in Nigeria that propels MASSOB to clamour for the state of Biafra” “It is, therefore, imperative that the international community should know the security challenges Ndigbo face in Nigeria. It is on this premise that MASSOB requests Ndigbo all over the world, to sit-at-home on June 8, 2013 to reflect on the continued and unprovoked, massacre of our people in Nigeria” He said as a mark of respect and honour to the victims and Igbo land all public/ private schools, markets/shops, banks, business premises, motor parks, etc. shall be closed from 6 am – 4 pm while saying there will be no movements of vehicles, commercial cyclists (okada) and tricycles (Keke Napep) throughout the period. “Within the period of the sit – at- home, Ndigbo all over the world are required to fast and pray to God for their emancipation. This exercise is also anchored on the principle of non-violence”

http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/apo-6-massob-declares-sit-at-home-june-8/

Where did this report say so that Rev.King should be release? Yoruba reporting at its best!.............This is the actual report as issued by MASSOB...
MASSOB exists in different SE states

MASSOB IMO is sitting-in for some igbo men who died in Abuja in 2005.
MASSOB EBONYI (this thread) is sitting-in for Rev. King.

I even wonder if the group is splintered. each state massob seem to be doing its own thing.

I'll be very honest and say that this topic is senseless and probably created out of ignorance. If any country in d world has "free market economy" then that country exists in Africa.

a perfectly free market economy = black market. period. There is very little law enforcement and policing in Nigeria so that entrepreneurship is abundant. legal (govt!) barrier is very low.

At the end of the day, all this nonsense is just psychological symptom of Biafra war loss. they will remain psychological victims forever. Who can blame them. Imagine a whole major ethnic group whining and making noise like a minority. Even the minority tribes aren't whining that much. Imagine, if Biafra materializes tomorrow, these perpetual 'victims' will find something against Nigeria to complain about. Na today?

let them go and find work abeg. If they can't find work in IMO state, then they should go to Lagos like all their family members.

payless: The PDP platform is modelled around the Republican Party in the U.S.A while AC is modelled around the Democratic Party.

PDP is known as the party of the rich.

AC is known for progressiveness. Equal rights for all.
how come we don't see debates on this in the politics section? Does this mean that nairaland members are homogeneous in their politics? or most nigerians just do not have a political ideology.

I don't think Republican party is necessarily a party for the rich. Some of the richest people in the USA are democrats. esp with the rise of technology. The new billionaires of America are technocrats (google, facebook, microsoft, apple etc) this industry is not labor intensive and therefore, their wealth isn't threatened by the will of the people. In the past, the billionaires were industry magnates (rockefeller, ford etc) that industry required huge amount of labor to such extent that the wealth of the rich was dependent on the labor of the poor. that is changing nowadays. especially since such folks can export/outsource their labor overseas. rich people can still claim to support progressiveness, labor rights and equal rights. ex we wouldn't consider bill gates, or steve jobs to be republicans even though they are stinking rich.
PoliticsRe: What's Your Politics? by 99cent(op): 1:45am On Jun 06, 2013
In USA, the main political parties are Republican (conservative) and Democrat (liberal) and even though we like to claim that there is tribalism on Nairaland, I think the reason is because we don't have political ideologies that could be used as substitute for tribalism. Most americans fight just the way yorubas and igbos do here on NL. but their fighting is usually along political lines: democrats vs republican. In fact, Most newspapers and political websites in USA are either liberal or conservative leaning. It's hard (almost impossible) to find a neural one. and that's just for a simple reason:

Everybody wants to stand for something. that's just human nature to stand for something. If you don't stand for something, you will fall for everything. I don't really trust people who don't have strong opinion about issues or who discourage strong opinions. either they are ignorant or they are wishy-washy and untrustworthy.
PoliticsWhat's Your Politics? by 99cent(op):
These days, we are hearing a lot about APC and PDP. Members from one group are crossing over to the other side and vice versa but what exactly is their platform? What is the ideology of APC? What is the ideology of PDP?

I am a moderate (liberal leaning) but I don't understand the platforms in Nigerian politics. Do they even exist? Or do people just choose parties based on their favorite governor etc. huh I support APC because it's Fashola's party yet I don't even know what APC stands for in terms of ideology/platform.

answer this question:
What Nigerian party do you support and why?
If you could create your own Nigerian political party, mention three key platforms you would use promote your party. i.e state your political ideology!
RomanceRe: Really Liked A Naija (yoruba) Girl And Regret Not Doing Anything (i'm Oyinbo) by 99cent: 1:11am On Jun 06, 2013
TrickofTech: Thank you very much : ) A good response. I am late twenties, she is 30. You have summarized all of my anxieties in your post! I know that Yoruba women are encouraged to marry quickly...if you get to 30+ without being married...Yoruba women start to panic a bit. I know that she wants to travel abroad...something she has tried before and is dreamy about. I am also very aware that some Nigerians just enjoy the novelty of whiteness. On top of that, I am well aware of how hard their living conditions are...and that I live in the developed world and have a good job.

Now you see how I am finding it hard. I want to be with someone who appreciates me for who I am. I am in no doubt that she liked me...and appreciated my personality...but to the stage of being in a romantic relationship? :\

Whenever she flirted with me in Nigeria, I would really enjoy it for a moment and then remind myself that deep down, her motivations are probably:
- Access to money
- A way of getting a green card
- A way of getting married fast
- Just interest in the white man

...I never found out if she really liked me...or if I was the list above.
hmm what are your own motivations?
you don't think she likes you for who you are?
at one point, you said she wasn't attractive, then later, you said she was attractive. it seems that you yourself are confused about your attraction to her. do you like her or not? or are there some other motivations...?

anyway, she is never going to ask you out or flirt with you in a very obvious way. That's just part of Nigerian culture (especially for born again christians). Usually men are the ones who make the first move and if she likes you, she will respond positively. Things won't be awkward if you approach it in a light manner and ask her out in a casual manner. She's probably just as confused about your intentions as u are about hers.

or maybe you like her but feel that dating her will be too much of an investment (considering culture/distance etc) and u don't like her badly enough to want to make that much of an investment/commitment. in other words: odikwa risky

what state in Nigeria did u stay in? and what did you visit for? i'm just wondering.
RomanceRe: Really Liked A Naija (yoruba) Girl And Regret Not Doing Anything (i'm Oyinbo) by 99cent: 4:38am On Jun 05, 2013
@TrickofTech,you say that she is older than you. how old are you? Maybe it's best for you just to remain as friends.

it seems clear to me that she likes you although of course i'm sure she also is dreamy about traveling abroad. What I don't know is if she liked u because u r white or for other reasons. I don't know you so I can't tell. If she's 30 then also, it may be getting difficult for her to find a husband. i'm sure her parents are hinting at u if they call u in-law or husband. LOL

sometimes, being good friends is good enough. and I like that you are being smart about all of this and thinking carefully.

CAMEROONPRIDE: why then the emphasis on "African women" it is clear this tradition is specific to an ethnic group..
In all honesty I think Igbo women are "more advanced" at least according to your standards, I see more Yoruba women in polygamy, esp as 5th 7th wife than Igbo women, just saying

Stop looking for cheap propaganda, Africa ain't that bad and we are blessed
yea you may see more yoruba women in polygamy (horrible practice) but she is also more likely to live in her own house separate from other wives or even the husband (mostly because such a man is usually wealthy or well off) and also has more freedom to divorce and leave her husband if she has to. I don't know of any yoruba practice where u have to starve urself over ur husband's death and go lock urself up in a room drinking corpse water for months with shaved head and black clothes.
of course the freedom isn't all that great but better than most tribes in Nigeria. especially among the poor.

when u move up to middle and upper class, dynamic is similar across most ethnic groups and polygamy isn't usually practiced except among muslims.

Lagos is the New York of Nigeria. Period. Everybody comes to lagos and feels at home. It is located in the heart of SW, the most accommodating region in Nigeria.

I think that they probably requested him to step down from the throne but he chose to send his wife away rather than step down. I'm sure nothing stops the guy from keeping his wife so long as he himself steps down from the throne.

My guess is that the queen has a role in d community just like the king. and having a foreigner as queen maybe akin to having a foreigner as ur king. maybe that's why. but if she's just a wife and nothing more then I see no reason why they should object to their monarch's decision to marry her.

keep in mind, the key word here is "sack" meaning that she had a JOB to do that is usually reserved for a community member. they didn't force her to divorce, all they did was "sack" her from her title/ the palace.

I will suggest that maybe an ideal situation will be to have a king and queen that are not necessarily married. LOL maybe they should elect a separate queen from the community. not sure how that will work but it's a possibility.

Widows Development Organisation (WiDO) WIDO is a Non-Governmental Organisation based in Enugu, in the South East of Nigeria providing support for Widows whose rights are violated It was registered as an NGO in 1996 and granted association with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations July 2010. The WWC carried out the first study of prevalent widowhood practices which was published in a book titled “Widowhood Practices: The case of Enugu State”. At age of 22, the now-TV mogul was fired

Winfrey was terminated from her post as

the “first and worst failure of her TV

Winfrey was then demoted to morning TV,

Seven years later, Winfrey moved to

WOW. I didn't know this about her story. Very eye-opening. Failure is not the end of the road.
