cleanup is different from displacing people without compensation or telling them when to come back.
The oppressors don't make excuses for their actions rather it's the oppressed that helps the oppressors to make excuses.
If it's about cleanup, why is lawma there?
There’s only so much you can do to clean-up a pit latrine (in fact, you can’t)...
What this PPP seeks to do is akin to replacing a pit latrine with a sanitized flush system.

Sometimes, the only way to change habits is by structural change...
That’s a metaphor for Nigeria itself! But if it’s your idea of “oppression”, sign me up.

Oga, you call it a fruit market, try and visualize the type of airy structures that most of them need, even upon giving it a modern touch, except you are thinking of their usual method of dislodging 5,000 law abiding average traders to bring in 200 wealthy ones or just 2 South African companies in the name of modernization.

You allow people to grow into it. You want only the markets to look like Europe, while the pockets of the people are not and our leaders are not even thinking like European leaders. And our roads are not. We'll wait to see how much they will ask then to pay just like the Ogba Retail Market.
You act as if Nigeria is the only place where fruit markets exist...
Modern fruit markets litter the globe and even here in NIGERIA, Emmanuel Ijewere’s Fresh Farms have inexpensive modern fruit stalls.

Meanwhile, while my post had nothing to do with large grocery stores or chains, suffice it to note that even those SA companies (apparently some Nigerians are just as xenophobic, but just not yet as violently so) depend on LOCAL NIGERIAN farmers, suppliers, logistics, security, etc. Accordingly, apart from the HUNDREDS OF NIGERIANS that they directly employ, they also generate HUNDREDS of other NIGERIAN JOBS all along the value chain. Heck, if that’s the best way to ensure clean healthy produce, more power to them.

modernize the market by building shops(rows of flats) that would be too expensive for the former occupants, is that really development

gypsey:
Ofcourse, that's what they would say, So who is modernizing the market the Lagos state Government or Developers?

And what is the Guarantee that The Government would alocate the modernized shops to these people who have been trading there for years? Or of they could even Afford the Modernized shops.
Issues of PUBLIC HEALTH and safety should not be compromised...
The health of the citizenry is not an area where we should be RACING TO THE BOTTOM.

The reality is that if you go to many markets in Lagos/Nigeria, you will not eat for a while...
Goods and produce are placed on the floor (even on the streets), while meat is often covered in flies.

Then, when folks drop dead at a relatively young age...
The largely superstitious citizens will blame “village people”!

People often look at the price of doing things rather the cost of not doing same...
But if we continue to neglect public health, EVERYONE ultimately pays the price (one way or another).

Sanwoolu is not even waiting for his second year not to talk of second term.

N2.8b to build shops in the market. Thats $7.8m. A God-fearing leader will conveniently use the same amount to develop 10 markets. This is one of the same markets from where Tinubu's daughter has been consistently exthorting and ripping people off.

#ENJOYYOURAPC!
We should forgo these crappy zink "markets", and build real modern markets...
With proper storage facilities, security, banking facilities, ambulatory services, etc.

Nepotism will not kill us in Nigeria, if they are actually technocrats and competent they would make the list and not be sacked.
Why? "Big men children" are genetically not smart? shocked

First, there are only two people there listed as "big men children" but nonetheless there are many "big men children" who actually are smart and work hard, in addition to the benefit of a good education (at least mostly in schools where sex-for-grades are a principal feature), so without privy to the CVs of these 35 Nigerians, let's not leap to precipitous conclusions.

While nobody should receive an unfair advantage because of parentage, neither should anyone suffer an unfair disadvantage because of same!

HealthRe: Lagos Records Lowest Birth Rate, Katsina Is Highest by 9jaRealist: 4:10am On Nov 07, 2019
MiddleDimension:
eucation is not the cause for not wanting to have fewer children. surveys only show correlation, not causative factors.

majority of highly educated people stay in urban centres where raring children can be expensive. that's not the case in rural centres. in rural communities, there is farm, the children work on farms thereby offsetting the cost of taking care if them. there is large space for settlement in villages and this means you can have more kids. in the city, space is expensive. if you are a family of say 5, you will need a three bedroom flat. that can cost alot in cities.
That's part of it but only a small part...
Because more educated people in RURAL areas also tend to have LESS kids.

The primary causation is that the longer in school people are, the later they tend to get married and thus the later they tend to have kids (not that marriage is necessarily prerequisite to bearing children). Educated people also tend to more likely become employed and or pursue professional careers after their education and thus will not have kids immediately which might be disruptive of their work or occupation. In fact, if not for the proverbial fertility "clock" many professional women would probably defer childbirth until much later. Finally, many educated women tend to be aspirational and want to manage the number of kids they have so that they can accord their kids a high quality of education and life in general.
>
HealthRe: Lagos Records Lowest Birth Rate, Katsina Is Highest by 9jaRealist: 3:04am On Nov 07, 2019
Not surprised at all...

The more educated people are...
The less likely they are to have many kids.

Ultimately, parenting is not about QUANTITY of kids...
But rather about the QUALITY of life we accord those kids.
