laudate: What is unreasonable about wearing trousers?? By wearing skirts, she gives other participants in the scheme the impression that the laws can be bent to suit her idiosyncrasies.
What is the purpose of a uniform? To create equality. When members of a designated unit are dressed alike, that unhealthy competitive feeling about looks and image, are eliminated.
So why create a breach by letting participants of the scheme tamper with the uniform? I repeat, that lady would make a very bad employee, as she cannot follow simple rules and she is trying to tamper with the rule and bend it to suit her selfish desires. Strawman’s Argument... Wearing skirts do not render pants “unreasonable” nor vice versa. Wearing a uniform does not mean that everyone must dress identically, but rather uniformly, as can be seen in the picture of military uniforms that I previously posted (in other words, it merely requires uniformity in respect of all persons wearing the same attire). Accordingly, the NYSC can regulate the sort of skirts that a corper should - just as corpers are not permitted to wear just any kind of pants. Nigerians have to learn to think outside-the-box in an increasingly diverse society. The era of being mindlessly Zombies should have been confined to our past. > |

fowlyansh181: if everybody respected everybody’s religion, they will be no law, or proper way to life. And why do you think we don’t ordinarily work on Sundays? Meanwhile, if everybody also disrespected everyone’s religion, there would similarly be anarchy... There has to be a reasonable midway between discouraging impunity and accommodating diversity. > |

laudate: You sound more ridiculous by the minute. If those who wear skirts are aware of trousers, why are they insisting on wearing skirts?
If uniforms are changed for every frivolous reason to accommodate diversity as you put it, then why have a uniform? Why not just scrap it?
People like this lady cannot be good employees, as they are unable to follow simple rules. They must bend the rules to suit their peculiar selfish ends.... Successful employers recognize PEOPLE as their greatest assets... And make reasonable accommodations for PEOPLE (flexible hours, paternity leave, home offices, casual wear, insurance benefits for gay couples etc.). Unfortunately, that’s why many Nigerian business are stunted and Nigeria remains perpetually a Third World S-hole! > |

People like this lady cannot be good employees, as they are unable to follow simple rules. They must bend the rules to suit their peculiar selfish ends.... And YOU obviously decides what constitutes a so-called “frivolous” reason? Most rational people would not think that making reasonable accommodations for reasonable religious (or such other cultural) observances are frivolous. Exactly how does her wearing skirts (when she is not engaged in physical training or similar activity) INFRINGE on others? SMH > |

laudate: Please what kind of dirty diversity? So if another person from a different religion comes up tomorrow, and says she wants to convert her own uniform to a bikini as part of her religion, you would support it in the name of diversity?
Or if an Ogun worshipper decided to attach cowries and raffia palm to her NYSC uniform, you would ask that the uniform should be changed to a raffia mat to accommodate diversity?
Why do people like to complicate things in this country?
Didn't the lady know exactly what the NYSC uniform looked like, before she enrolled into the scheme?
Why didn't she raise an objection to wearing trousers before enrolling into the NYSC scheme?? Obviously, you have elected to ignore the “reasonable” qualifier... Nonetheless, what’s wrong with “raffia palm” or even cowries Other than your colonial masters telling you it is fetish and unprofessional... The same masters that have our lawyers wearing white wig and gown in the African sun! SMDH > |

laudate: It should take what life into account? Is there anything a youth corper needs to do wearing a skirt, that she cannot do while wearing the khaki trouser? Why do people argue blindly like this?
If she knew from day one, she could not abide by the rules of the NYSC with regards to the uniform, why on earth did she agree to serve?? I take it that all the people who ordinarily wear skirts don’t know of the existence of trousers? Rules as an end of itself or rules just for the sale of rules is just a DUMB concept... Rules are made for people (not vice versa) and if the rules can REASONABLY accommodate diversity, why not? > |

laudate: Oga, skirts are not part of the NYSC approved uniform. So stop comparing apples with oranges. The NYSC rules are clear, on what is acceptable to be worn as the uniform. The rules are NOT cast in stone or otherwise inviolable... REASONABLE changes can be made to accommodate reasonable diversity. People act as if these “rules” were not drawn up by some civil servants... Even the NYSC itself was a military creation that was IMPOSED onto the Constitution. > |

nobodytestme: Oga stop trying to sound intelligent when it’s obvious you are not.. If you are not ok with wearing it, then get an exemption certificate.. I’m pretty certain she didn’t try this for the 3 weeks orientation camp, else she would have been decamped immediately. Christianity and Islam are not the only religion we have, how about people who serve Ifa and other dieties, so it’s best they design their uniforms to suit their religion then.. You are not Intelligent at all..
If you did attend NYSC, you know they have their bylaws, rules and regulations concerning dress code and all, so please don’t think you made Sense when you didn’t I will ignore the CHILDISH personal insults... They are evidence of a lack of substantive merit or a crude upbringing. Rules are made by PEOPLE for PEOPLE...Nothing in either the NYSC Decree 1993 (now an Act under Section 315 of the Constitution) or in the Constitution itself (Section 315(5) dealing specifically with the NYSC) compulsorily MANDATES the wearing of pants. These bylaws, rules and regulations are made from time to time to accommodate the realities of PEOPLE and there’s absolutely NOTHING that prevents making REASONABLE (a term that I have used repeatedly) changes to accommodate the REASONABLE religious (or other cultural) observances of PEOPLE - whether they worship “religions” IMPORTED into Nigeria or the so-called “dieties” that are INDIGENOUS to Nigeria. Lets say she was meant to do some of the para-military training, will the modified 'skirt' not reveal her underwear? Nothing wrong with the BRT buses (except ordinary wear and tear)... In fact, Primero (the private operator) has raised a corporate bond for more/newer buses. Many people erroneously conflate the red LAGBUS buses (operated by NURTW) with the BRT buses... The difference in maintenance illustrates the advantages of a well-run PRIVATE sector operated service. > |

kokomilala: @Bridget95,that's a lame excuse and a very weak argument that can't fly in the cloud of popular reasoning. The capital was taken away from Lagos in 1992.And the federal government has all but abandoned Lagos. The prosperity of Lagos stems from ,one its coastal riches, just like London, Rotterdam, Tokyo, New York etc. Two,sea ports open up business activities and investors leverage on this. So, what's up with you? I laugh hysterically when some past governor irresponsibly claimed that his kinsmen developed Lagos.Yes,they contributed their bits, but not on a mass scale as we see it today. Because Lagos has become a sort of melting pot for various nationalities and peoples. Take a bow abegi... One of the more sensible comments on Nairaland. > |
