The presidency has on Saturday evening, said that views expressed by Malam Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, were personal to him and did not, in any way, reflect that of either the President or his administration. In a statement released by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the presidency said, "at age 80, and having served as editor and managing director of one of this country’s most influential newspapers, the New Nigerian, certainly, Malam Mamman qualifies as an elder statesman with a national duty to hold perspectives and disseminate them as guaranteed under our constitution and laws of the land. He does not need the permission or clearance of anyone to exercise this right." Recall that in interview granted by the elder statesman to the BBC Hausa Service, Daura said competence should be placed above zoning arrangement in the 2023 presidential election. His submission however, generated alot of critics as Afenifere and other political interest groups in the South condemned the elder statesman. Dura statement that political parties should jettison zoning and dwell on competence as a criterion for fielding candidates for the 2023 was also rejected by both the ruling All Progressive Congress(APC) party and the major opposition party the People's Democratic Party(PDP). The statement reads : We have received numerous requests for comments on the interview granted by Malam Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew to the BBC Hausa Service. It is important that we state from the onset that as mentioned by the interviewee, the views expressed were personal to him and did not, in any way, reflect that of either the President or his administration. At age 80, and having served as editor and managing director of one of this country’s most influential newspapers, the New Nigerian, certainly, Malam Mamman qualifies as an elder statesman with a national duty to hold perspectives and disseminate them as guaranteed under our constitution and laws of the land. He does not need the permission or clearance of anyone to exercise this right. In an attempt to circulate the content of the interview to a wider audience, the English translation clearly did no justice to the interview, which was granted in Hausa, and as a result, the context was mixed up and new meanings were introduced and/or not properly articulated. The issues discussed during the interview, centred around themes on how the country could birth an appropriate process of political dialogue, leading to an evaluation, assessment and a democratic outcome that would serve the best interest of the average Nigerian irrespective of where they come from. These issues remain at the heart of our evolving and young democracy, and as a veteran journalist, scholar and statesman, Malam Mamman has seen enough to add his voice to those of many other participants. Chris Oyakhilome also known as Pastor Chris the founder and president of LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as Christ Embassy has allegedly slammed the Nigeria government for attempting to reduce the time spent in Sunday services. According to the Clergyman, the government has no right to regulate churches and determine how long services will take. Oyakhilome who made this disclosure while speaking in a church live broadcast, said Christians should be allowed to serve God the way they want with government regulations and restrictions. He added that the number of hours they were imposing on churches was what they had left in the world. In his words " We can serve God as he wants us to, not as somebody says we should. “I am appalled that some people have the audacity to tell us how many hours we can spend in church. How dare you? “What in the world do you think you are? Your time is short. You cannot tell God’s people how long they can spend in church. If you built the building for them and you are saying you are not going to let them enter the building, maybe because you built it. “But if you didn’t, you have no right to tell God’s people you’re going to spend one hour or two hours in church. I tell you, the number of hours you tell them they have in the church is the number of hours you have left.” Source: https://insidenaija.com.ng/2020/08/01/covid-19-government-has-no-wright-to-regulate-churches-says-pastor-chris-oyakhilome/ |

However, a human right activist Prince Wiro, after receiving a whatsapp text message from the victim, that she has been taken to a guest house because of N100 face mask by a police officer on Wednesday, demanded the State Police Command to launch investigations into the matter and make sure the perpetrator of the evil acts is brought to brook. Wiro said, “Open immediate investigation into the alleged rape of this woman by a serving officer. “There is no justification for the punishment of rape to be meted out to a woman because she flouted Rivers State Government order on the use of nose masks. I expect the police to take this matter seriously. “You know there’s a recent order from the Inspector General of Police charging every Command to do everything possible to make rape a thing of the past in the society.” Reacting to the allegation the Police Command in the state through the Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said: “After hearing about this, we immediately invited the lady. Demonstrators in California have been demanding the early release of prison inmates as COVID-19 deaths mount in California prisons. San Quentin State Prison, north of San Francisco, has been California's hardest hit with over 500 active cases. Nineteen inmates have died there - with 10 fatalities, ironically, on death row. San Quentin had zero coronavirus cases until the May transfer of 121 inmates from the California Institute of Men in Chino. Statewide, more than 1,800 inmates have tested positive. 47 inmates died of "suspected virus complications." Officials say more than 5,600 prisoners have recovered. Across the U.S., more than 57,000 prison inmates have tested positive for the coronavirus since the outbreak began. An estimated 34,000 prisoners have recovered and at least 651 died. source: https://insidenaija.com.ng/2020/07/29/covid-19-651-prison-inmates-dead-over-34000-others-infected-in-us/

President Muhammadu Buhari will not resign over alleged cases of corruption in Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund(NSITF) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Federal Government has said. The Information and Culture Minister Lia Muhammade, who made the government's position known in a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, said the call for Mr. President resignation is infertile. According to him, in government anti-graft war against corruption no one found involved in any corrupt practices will be spared. He however, noted that the People Democratic Party(PDP) and other are celebrating cases of corruption in some Ministries Departments and Agencies. He added that those who thinking anti-corruption war is dying are engaging in wishful thinking. In his words: : “You are all aware, Nigerians have recently been inundated with allegations of monumental corruption in a number of government agencies, including the NDDC, NSITF and the anti-corruption agency, EFCC. ” Many, especially naysayers, have misinterpreted these developments as a sign that the Administration’s fight against corruption is waning. “In fact, the main opposition PDP has latched on to the developments to call for the resignation of Mr. President, a call that is nothing but infantile! “Let me state here and now that the fight against corruption, a cardinal programme of this Administration, is alive and well. “President Muhammadu Buhari, the African Union’s Anti-Corruption Champion, who also has an impeccable reputation globally, remains the driver of the fight and no one, not the least the PDP under whose watch Nigeria was looted dry, can taint his image or reverse the gains of the fight. “Anyone who disagrees that the anti-corruption fight is alive and well is free to dare us.” source: https://insidenaija.com.ng/2020/07/28/buhari-wont-resign-over-alleged-corruption-cases-in-efcc-nddc-and-nsitf-fg/ |
High Court situated in Abuja has on Tuesday, sentenced former Finance Director of the Niger Delta Ministry, Mr. Ayinla Abibu, to one year imprisonment for looting N60 million. The court also remanded him of two plots of land in Kubwa and Bwari of Abuja on the one count-charge against him. Mr. Adibu was convicted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for using a front company, Zeocat Nigeria Limited to defraud the federal government of the sum of N60million, in March, 2014. According to Vanguard, the convict was charged by ICPC before Hon Justice Olukayode Adeniyi for defrauding the federal government in secret cooperation with one Mr. Kabiru Poloma former Principal Accountant in the Ministry, by fraudulently withdrawing the money from the Constituency Project account of the Ministry domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Mr. Adibu was said to have used the stolen money to acquire an apartment in Ogbomosho, Oyo State and a plot of land each in Kubwa and Bwari of Abuja. Having found guilty, the defence counsel Abiola Akinwale, pleaded with the Court to tender justice with mercy as the convict fell amongst the age(60 years) vulnerable to corona virus disease. He further told the court that a longer sentence could lead to the death of the convict’s aged parents who are 92 and 99 years old respectively. The prosecutor Counsel Mr. George Lawal, argued that the convict should be punished accordingly as considering the grievous nature of the crime committed by him, saying that a lesser sentence might fail to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders. It a pity that despite the NigerDelta Development Commission(NDDC), claim that it spent N81.5 billion within 6 months(January to July 2020), students from this region who are on scholarships in the United Kingdom are still stranded and have not yet receive their allowances, tuition and other incentives. The Chairman, and CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission(NIDCOM) Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa has once again appealed to the Authorities of theCommission to as a matter of urgency intervene by promptly paying the allowances, tuition and other incentives of students on their scholarship scheme, to guarantee their stay and continue their education in the United Kingdom. In a statement released on Tuseday in Abuja by Mr.Gabriel Odu of the Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, NIDCOM,made reference to a letter written to the Hon Minister of the Niger Delta Sen. Godswill Akpabio, dated June 18, 2020. NIDCOM drew the attention of the authorities of NDDC to the plight of the students and urged them to pay the student's Scholarships. She noted that, the commission count on the Minister's assurance that all outstanding payments of affected students will be made. According to her, at the moment, there have been persistent calls by the Students for urgent intervention. While deadline for payment of the fees of some students have expired or about to expire, non-payment of their allowances have turned many of them to virtually become beggars.
