The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Police in Lagos has remembered two suspects who were arrested in 2016 for stashing stolen money in their pants. RRS reminisced about the incident in several tweets on Thursday. The suspects had pretended to be helping the police in chasing robbers who made away with lots of money. The robbers abandoned the loot and escaped. Instead of handing it over to the police, the suspects hid all they could in their pants. They were later searched after some officers observed their unusual movement. https://mobile.twitter.com/rrslagos767/status/1172144602536718341 http://igberetvnews.com/983283/rrs-remembers-suspects-who-stashed-stolen-money-in-pants-photos/

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, Joe Igbokwe, has said that Igbos are just too arrogant and highly disrespectful of their hosts wherever they go, Igbere TV reports. Mr. Igbokwe said this in a recent interview on Sunday, September 8, with Lagos Metro Media while discussing about what he thought about the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. According to him, only the Igbos will invade another's tribe hometown in large numbers and demand equality with the homeland. He added that When Igbos go to other people's country or state, they make no efforts to adapt to their host culture nor respect them. Read his full statement below; “Only an arrogant tribe like the Igbos will invade another's tribe hometown in large numbers and demand equality and the ownership of the homeland. The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia has dismissed a petition filed against the election of Senator Orji Kalu of Abia North. Candidate of All Grassroots Alliance (AGA), Anagha Anagha, had filed the petition claiming that he was unlawfully excluded from the February 23 Abia North Senatorial election, Igbere TV reports. Mr Anagha prayed the tribunal to annul the election of the former Abia governor and order a fresh one. Justice Cornelius Akintayo, leading a three-man panel on Thursday in a unanimous judgement, ruled that Anagha, the first petitioner, failed to prove his allegation of exclusion by the first respondent, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Justice Akintayo said that all records at the panel’s disposal indicated that the second petitioner, AGA, did not present any candidate for the senatorial election. He added that Anagha, having not been a candidate of any party, lacked legal standing to present his case before the tribunal, and therefore dismissed his petition. Igbere TV reports that panel had earlier granted the application of the AGA, seeking to strike out its name from the petition on grounds that the first petitioner was never nominated by it. The panel had on Tuesday fixed September 9 for judgement in the matter between Mao Ohabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Kalu over the same Abia North Senatorial District. http://igberetvnews.com/964456/breaking-court-dismisses-suit-against-orji-kalus-election/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

Some youth in Enugu State have called on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Awgu Community over what they described as security sabotage. This is coming over the recent increase in criminal activities, kidnappings and killings in the Awgu Local Government Area of the state. The youth are alleging that the criminal activities are being sponsored by enemies of the state, who are out to distract the government and put Enugu in bad light. Igbere TV recalls that many criminal activities had taken place in the local government recently, making it a flash point in the Southeastern state. Hon. Sunday Ude-Okoye, the National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was few days ago kidnapped by suspected hoodlums in the locality. Hon. Ude was however set free yesterday after spirited intervention by the government and security forces in the state. Another victim and Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Offu was similarly killed by suspected hoodlums in the same Awgu local government on August 1. Four days after Fr. Offu’s murder, the traditional ruler of Agbogugu, HRH Igwe Sunday Orji and his wife, were also kidnapped in the same Awgu local government. Just last week, Augustine Ude, Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Lands, was kidnapped in Awgu town, though he has since been released by his abductors. A statement by the Enugu police command, said the permanent secretary’s abductors were forced to release him after the force joined forces with neighbourhood watch groups to apprehend them. Reacting to the development in a statement sent to Igbere TV, Dr. Edwin Obune, National Coordinator, Enugu Youth Coalition, said a declaration of state of emergency was the way forward. “It is clear from the nature of attacks that there is a deliberate plot by some selfish elements and individuals to make Awgu appear insecure, and project the state in bad light”, he said. “What we need now is a state of emergency to be declared on the security situation in Awgu, in order to put an end to the sabotage. “We want to see immediate, holistic, effective, coordinated action specifically targeting those committing atrocities across Awgu local government”, Obune added. While commending the recent inauguration of forest guards by the governor, the coalition chairman called on the people of Awgu to be patience with the state government and maintain peace. Another resident, Justice Ekwo, while supporting the call for a state of emergency in Awgu, said the advice was necessary owing to the increase in criminal activities in the area. He said anything short of a state of emergency would “turn the locality into a region of criminals and killers, worse than what any other state has ever witnessed before”. He frowned over the spate of killings, kidnapping and armed robbery attacks in Awgu, describing the development as very unfortunate and should be checkmated. “It is very clear now that few (people) are out there trying to sabotage efforts of the state government by sponsoring criminal activities in Awgu local government”, he said. Ekwo also asked Governor Ugwuanyi to “examine those he has given the task of securing the place and get rid of those who have shown themselves to be incapable, and also deal with any one found culpable.” On his part, Chief Nnia Nwodo, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, enjoined the state government not to be distracted by enemies of progress, but to continue to carry out measures it has put in place to secure lives and property in the state. He decried “the growing tendency of some detractors of Enugu State Government”, who he said “are out to destabilise the peace and tranquility in Enugu State that earned it the sobriquet of the most peaceful state in the country”. In a statement sent to Igbere TV, Nwodo called on security agencies to unravel the conspiracy and tendency of hoodlums who are attempting to make the state insecure through incessant kidnappings and killings which hitherto were absent. He therefore called for thorough investigation into the activities, stating that he will continue to add his voice to the condemnation of the dastardly and inhuman act. Chief Nwodo commiserated with all those who may have lost their loved ones, while calling for vigilance and precautions among the people to nip these acts in the bud. http://igberetvnews.com/961808/enugu-youths-to-ugwuanyi-declare-state-of-emergency-in-awgu-over-security-sabotage/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

Former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has suggested a break-up of diplomatic ties with South Africa over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians. Mr Fani-Kayode said in a tweet on Wednesday that the Federal Government’s approach of sending an envoy was not the best way to handle the situation, Igbere TV reports. He added that South African companies in Nigeria should also be nationalised to send a message to South African authorities. “The only way to make the South Africans appreciate that Nigerians cannot be killed like chickens is not by sending an envoy but by breaking off diplomatic relations and nationalising all South African companies in Nigeria. If they do not stop after that then we should declare war,” the former minister said. Fani-Kayode had on Tuesday said that if he were president of Nigeria, no South African company would feel safe at this time. The latest attacks began last week after a taxi driver was murdered by an alleged drug dealer in Pretoria. Speculations that the alleged killer was a Nigerian sparked protest, looting and burning of business centres owned by foreigners. Three persons were reported to have been killed in a fire started by a mob on an abandoned building in the Jeppestown area of Johannesburg. http://igberetvnews.com/961408/nigeria-should-break-diplomatic-ties-with-south-africa-fani-kayode/

The management of Benue State University has shut down the institution over students’ protests on the varsity’s new Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) grading. In a statement on Monday by the varsity’s registrar, Dr Mfaga Modom, the university said that the closure was necessary to avoid breakdown of law and order in and around the campus. It asked students to vacate the campus latest 4 pm. The students had begun protesting the new five point grading system early Monday. They blocked the two gates of the university located along the busy Makurdi/Gboko Highway. The students want to school to revert to the old practice of calculating CGPA. Some students alleged that the policy was meant to victimise brilliant students who are not in the good books of their lecturers. The registrar, however, said the university was following a directive by the National Universities Commission by reverting to the 5-Point Grading System with effect from the 2018/2019 academic session. Modom said: “In the interim, the University Management met the students and informed them of the efforts of the Senate and appealed for their patience to enable the committee to complete the assignment. “Management also, through the Dean of Students issued a circular informing the students of its efforts. “The closure of the University gates by students on account of this issue is therefore unwarranted. Management wishes to reiterate that it can only consider their appeal when the report of the Senate Committee is received. “Management, therefore, appeals to students to be law-abiding and respect constituted authority, policies and properties of the University and allow due process to prevail.” http://igberetvnews.com/956344/just-in-benue-university-closed-as-students-protest-new-cgpa-grading/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

Today, Kerosene lamps have become almost absent in urban areas, but are still being utilized as a light source in rural areas. A Nigerian man on Facebook identified as Dili Ogbuenyi has taken to his page to share adorable photos of his children's reaction after seeing a kerosene lamp for the first time. According to Mr. Dili, an Electrical Specialist, he decided to take his children to visit their grandmother in the village where they had the opportunity to see an old-fashioned kerosene powered lamp for the first time ever. In the photo shared by the man, the kids were seen keenly looking at the lamp. Mr. Dili in his Facebook post wrote, “Visited grandma today and the kids had the opportunity of seeing this oldskool lantern for the very first time.” “I don't think they will sleep tonight. So happy,” he added. A kerosene lamp is a type of lighting device that uses kerosene as a fuel. The lamp which is commonly used for portable lighting have a wick as a light source, protected by a glass chimney or globe. Kerosene lanterns are useful for lighting without electricity, such as in regions without rural electrification, in electrified areas during power outages. Just over a billion people across the globe live without steady access to electricity and 93 million are Nigerians. Despite possessing some of the world’s largest deposits of coal, oil and gas, Nigeria generates less power than a single dam in Washington, United States. Nearly 10 million Nigerians still light their homes through Kerosene lamps when the sun goes down. We are the 6th largest consumer of kerosene in the world, with total imports of two billion litres of kerosene each year. https://leakers.ng/viral/1453-man-shares-adorable-photo-of-his-kids-seeing-a-kerosene-lamp-for-the-first-time/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has increased fees for Nigerians applying for tourism, student and business visas. The embassy in a statement on Tuesday said effective from August 29 Nigerians applying for the aforementioned visas which used to cost N59, 200, would do so with an extra $110 (N40, 700), Igbere TV reports. This would bring the total amount to N99, 900. According to the statement, applicants who are denied visas would not need to pay the extra N40, 700. Applicants seeking the L1 Visa (work permit) will pay an extra N112, 100 if given visas while those applying for H4 Visa (dependency/spousal) will pay an extra N66, 600. The US embassy said it raised the fees because Americans were paying too much to get Nigerian visas. “Effective worldwide on August 29, Nigerian citizens will be required to pay a visa issuance fee, or reciprocity fee, for all approved applications for non-immigrant visas in B, F, H1B, I, L, and R visa classifications,” the statement said. “The reciprocity fee will be charged in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, which all applicants pay at the time of application. Nigerian citizens whose applications for a non-immigrant visa are denied will not be charged the new reciprocity fee. Both reciprocity and MRV fees are non-refundable, and their amounts vary based on visa classification. “US law requires US visa fees and validity periods to be based on the treatment afforded to US citizens by foreign governments, insofar as possible. Visa issuance fees are implemented under the principle of reciprocity: when a foreign government imposes additional visa fees on US citizens, the United States will impose reciprocal fees on citizens of that country for similar types of visas. “Nationals of a number of countries worldwide are currently required to pay this type of fee after their non-immigrant visa application is approved. “Since early 2018, the US government has engaged the Nigerian government to request that the Nigerian government change the fees charged to US citizens for certain visa categories. After 18 months of review and consultations, the government of Nigeria has not changed its fee structure for U.S. citizen visa applicants, requiring the US Department of State to enact new reciprocity fees in accordance with our visa laws. “The reciprocity fee will be required for all Nigerian citizens worldwide, regardless of where they are applying for a non-immigrant visa to the United States. http://igberetvnews.com/938451/breaking-us-raises-cost-of-visa-applications-for-nigerians/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Festus Keyamo, has described suspected fraud kingpin, jerry Ikogho, as a brother and friend from a good home, Igbere TV reports. The newly appointed minister said this in an interview with newsmen after pictures of the two men appeared on the Internet. Igbere TV reports that Ikogho is one of the 77 Nigerians charged for massive fraud and money laundering in the United States of America following an extensive FBI operation. The suspects allegedly conspired to scam at least $46 million from victims via romance scams, business email compromises and other online fraud schemes. A grand jury indictment was filed in the Central District of California back in October 2018 and unsealed last week after the arrest of 14 defendants in the US. The remaining 63 individuals are believed to be abroad, with most in Nigeria. Keyamo began a relationship with Ikogho as a child in the 70s in Ughelli, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State. They were classmates at Government College Ughelli and were children of Jehovah’s Witnesses. While Keyamo’s family barely managed to make ends meet, Ikogho’s father was a major car dealer in the area. Speaking in the interview, Keyamo said he did not know the kind of business Ikogho was doing in America. “We were born together in the same town at Ughelli in Delta State. His parents and my parents are close friends up till tomorrow. We were both raised in the Jehovahs Witnesses sect. It is a whole family union. If he has legal issues, I handled them for him free of charge. I didn’t know him as a client but as a family friend with whom we both grew up together,” Keyamo was quoted as saying. Asked if he was aware that his friend was into shady business, Keyamo asked: “How would I know? He has not been proven guilty. Have you concluded that he is into massive fraud and money laundering?” The lawyer who once prosecuted cases on behalf of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), added that he needs to hear from Ikogho what transpired in America before he takes a position. Hear him: “If his explanations are not satisfactory, I will scold him. I have spoken with the wife since this issue broke out, but I have been unable to get in touch with him. But I need to hear from him.” Describing what happened to his friend as “very unfortunate”, Keyamo added that Ikogho grew up and did his youth service in Nigeria. “I used to stay with him when I first came to Abuja. He is my brother and friend, though I am just a month older than him. Anybody can be in trouble. I am praying for him. If he has valid explanations I will help him legally. I can’t run away from him,” he concluded. http://igberetvnews.com/931836/just-in-keyamo-speaks-on-his-relationship-with-jerry-ikogho-suspected-fraudster-nabbed-by-fbi/

Returning Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama says he will focus attention on ensuring the security of Nigerians living abroad and attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the country. Onyeama made this known in Abuja on Wednesday when he assumed office following his reappointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He said that his focus would be in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda which aims to make to make the Nigerian economy to be reckoned with at the ECOWAS, African Union, and global level. Onyeama said that in implementing foreign policies, the ministry would be more aggressive and robust in engaging countries to ensure that the human rights and security of Nigerians anywhere in the world were respected, Igbere TV reports. He said that to that effect, a call number would be made available to Nigerians living abroad to enable them to call and ask for assistance wherever they were. Speaking on the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, Onyeama said that both countries would work on growing a special relationship between them at the presidential level. He explained that in the framework, the issue of the security of Nigerians in South Africa would be addressed at the highest level. Onyeama said that there was also a trust deficit between Nigerians living in South Africa and the South African Police. “It was important to get both parties to work together toward addressing the issue,” he, said. http://igberetvnews.com/920530/onyeama-assumes-office-with-pledge-too-protect-nigerians-abroad-photos/

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its 2019 presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, August 21, informed the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) that Atiku Abubakar has not denied claims by the party that he is not Nigerian. Making their final submissions before the tribunal the APC and President Buhari prayed the court to dismiss petition by Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party against the results of the 2019 presidential election, Igbere TV reports. Speaking before the tribunal, counsel to the president, Wole Olanipekun, said the petition brought before the tribunal by the PDP and Atiku failed to lead any reasonable evidence to support their claim. Olanipekun said the petitioners who have claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had a server with which it worked with to deliver the election results, they have failed to identify it and show the court where it is located. Also speaking, Lateef Fagbemi, counsel to the APC said all issues raised against Atiku’s qualification to contest for allegedly not being a Nigerian by birth, were not challenged by either Atiku himself or the PDP. “On the qualification of the first petitioners (Atiku). In spite of all we put before the court, they provided nothing to the contrary." “What we need is minimal proof. Nothing was put forward in the petitioners’ written address to counter this. And, I must commend them, because they have nothing to offer," Fagbemi said. He said the third respondent has discharge the burden on that and that the issue of the 1st petitioner’s non-qualification is effectively dealt with in the APC's written address. “To fault INEC’s position, they have the burden to show substantial non-compliance. They failed to do this. The implication therefore, is that there was substantial compliance with the Electoral Act in the conduct of the last presidential election,” Fagbemi added. https://www.legit.ng/amp/1255458-breaking-atiku-didnt-deny-s-nigerian-by-birth---buhari-apc.html

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has finally admitted raiding former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode's home after denying the report earlier. Though eyewitnesses said the anti-graft agency's operatives were stopped by residents of Epe (Ambode's hometown), the EFCC claimed they were attacked by Ambode's hoodlums in a statement released by its head of media and publicity Wilson Uwajuren. He further disclosed that three officers were injured in the attack, while the EFCC official vehicle was damaged, Igbere TV reports. Wilson said “the EFCC had obtained valid warrant to conduct search on Ambode’s residences in Park View, Ikoyi and country home in Epe, as part of ongoing investigation of alleged malfeasance”. “The attack was totally unprovoked as the Commission’s operatives were civic and did not molest anybody. The Commission therefore frowns at the attempt to manipulate the video of the search to create the wrong impression that officers of the agency molested residents at the Epe home of the governor. It is also not true that the search was an attempt to plant foreign currencies in the home of the former governor,” he added. http://igberetvnews.com/917091/efcc-finally-admits-raid-but-says-they-were-attacked-by-ambodes-hoodlums/

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has come under heavy criticism on social media after he supported the assault on a former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Germany. Igbere TV reports that Ekweremadu who was attending a cultural event by the Ndi-igbo Germany community as a speaker/special guest of honour was on Saturday beaten up and egged publicly by members of IPOB. Mr Kanu, in a broadcast to members on Sunday, pledged N1 million reward for information on the foreign travel plans of all the governors in the South East region and the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai, Igbere TV reports. He said: “Anyone who will provide any reliable information about any country that any of our corrupt politicians will be travelling to will be awarded N1 million. Give IPOB accurate information on their whereabouts and collect N1 million. E.g. people like David Umahi, Okezie Ikpeazu, Nnia Nwodo, Buratai, Willie Obiano and many others. “They are about to start another Operation Python Dance III exercise tomorrow in Biafra Land. I’m sounding this warning, if any IPOB is killed again in any South-East state, we will come after the children of the governor in the state if any IPOB member is killed. We will go after your children, because we know where they are in Europe and abroad.” He also warned Yoruba and Hausa Fulani leaders to stay away from the matters of the Igbo. Senator Ekweremadu was to give a keynote address at the Second Igbo Annual Cultural Festival and Convention organised by Ndi-Igbo Germany when members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) invaded the venue, Igbere TV reports. “It is incredibly absurd for anybody to blame the distinguished Senator for the violent criminal activities in his home base, the purported reason cited by the mob for the bewildering attack,” Lawan said in statement on Sunday by his spokesman, Ola Awoniyi. “Senator Ekweremadu, like all his distinguished colleagues in the Ninth Assembly of the Senate, is concerned about the insecurity and other challenges in that area and other parts of Nigeria. Senator Ekweremadu has also been at the forefront of the patriotic efforts to find lasting solutions to the challenges. “The barbaric attack on Senator Ekweremadu at a forum to which he was invited to contribute to charting a course for the progress and happiness of Ndigbo debase our values as civilised people. It is most reprehensible and should be condemned by all right-thinking Nigerians,” Lawan said. He urged the German authorities to identify those involved in the despicable act so that the law can take its course against them. The Senate President also urged Nigerians to always reflect deeply and broadly before embarking on a course of action, adding that the youths should ventilate whatever grievances they have along lines prescribed by the law and recommended by reason and democratic ethos. Lawan also urged Ekweremadu not to be deterred by the incident from his path of service to his people and Nigerians, Igbere TV reports. El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenah, arrived in Nigeria on Friday after a botched medical treatment in India. In a video made public on Saturday, the seemingly healthy-looking El-Zakzaky, during his trip to India, is seen talking with an unidentified Indian official. “I have been about four years in prison now; a house fully furnished. In fact, our next neighbour was the senate president; a large house. I was free to move about. Similarly, when they moved me to Kaduna I was in the best area – government reserved area. It is a house fully furnished with large bedrooms and I was free,” he said. “I have never been in detention with police there; in fact, the soldiers used to stay outside at the gate. That is what they have been doing. When we came here we were put in prison. “I will definitely prefer another hospital. I was told that some Shi’ite Ulama came and said I should be allowed to be treated in India.” The Federal Government once said it was spending N3.5 million monthly to feed El-Zakzaky and his family. The IMN leader said he made the trip at his own expense, but that the Nigerian government told Indian authorities that they were “the ones bringing us.” The Federal Government had said on Friday that El-Zakzaky’s repatriation became necessary after he attempted to seek asylum, Igbere TV reports. Nigerian musician and actress, Omawumi, has said that she would not leave her husband even if he cheated on her. The 37-year-old said this in episode of actress, Mercy Johnson’s, cook show, Mercy’s Menu. Answering a hypothetical question of if she would leave if she caught her husband cheating, she said: “No, never. I can’t leave because of that one error. It’s not a good way to do these things but you know, I call my husband my partner, it’s a partnership, na two of us na hin dey inside (we are both in the relationship together). So, what you would not want me to do to you, don’t do it to me. “It’s not feminism, it’s very simple mathematics. I didn’t say it’s equal partnership because my husband is the head of my home and it’s not feminism but when you go and cheat, and you say it’s by mistake, did you fall inside by mistake? But he needs to explain to me, do you want to do it again? Those are the questions we would discuss and then he will pay a penalty under punishment like say you aren’t visiting home front again because you have gone to visit outside. It has never happened to me before, I and my husband are not saints but we are just blessed and you don’t know a man to the end,” she said. She also said she had learnt to communicate with her husband as they grew together. In January, Omawumi had celebrated the first anniversary of her traditional wedding. Omawumi and Mr Yusuf have been legally married since 2015 but only had their traditional ceremony in Warri, Delta State, in 2018. The couple has two children.
