ebemio: NMA is turning to something else but they signed and took an oath in order to save life. I can conclude that NMA are puppets in the hands of the opposition to rubbish the government of the day. Too many trade union in Nigeria coming up with different demands, We should all hope for a better day ahead.Yes NMA took oath to save lives, not oath to slavery. The oath is between doctors and their patients. They continue to honour the contents of their oath in private settings where condition is favourable. The oath did not mandate them to accept unfavourable condition of work from the govt. |
Dr. Phantom, what is your take on the non-appliance of relativity and skipping for the HOs, MOs, and Registrars. It seems like our senior colleagues are about to betray us as usual. We pay equal dues with them, even though they earn more. Why why why. . . |
Sunbellar: please what's the name of Prof. Onah private hospital in Enugu? ?I will ask. Just give me time. The man is doing wonders. Last year, he helped Prof. Adimora wife conceive after more than 20 years of childless marriage. Prof. Adimora is the head of the newborn special care unit of UNTH. |
I boarded Innoson coaster when I travelled from Enugu to Nsukka last year. I must confess that it was one of the most rugged vehicle I've boarded. I can't wait to drive their SUV. It looks rugged, just my kind of ride. Innocent carry on, we are in total support of you. |
FP please! Let the debate continue |
It will be a sacrilege for a nurse to earn more than a doctor. When their skills, competence and training are not the same. Doctors were trained with an expanded curriculum, while nurses were trained with a narrowed curriculum. For heaven sake, why on earth must nurses salary be on par with that of doctors? Has anybody bothered to compare the curriculum both used in training? Let me make it known here that some of the nurses actually failed out from medical school. So why must Nigerians reward intellectual laziness? Doctors deserve everything they are getting. Passing through medical school is tough. |

Why are doctors on strike? Of all rhetorical questions I’ve seen this has to be the most shallow. Such questions should only be asked in a land of sane people not in a nation where everything has gone awry. Sainthood is not by force. Why force doctors to be saints and perpetual onlookers in a nation where every one without exception are corrupt souls? A majority of Nigerians don’t agree with doctors going on strike simply because they feel that by the nature of the doctors work he should trudge on even at his own peril. They talk about the Hippocratic oath to back this belief in doctors not having the fundamental human rights to seek an improvement of the profession they’ve chosen. Those who glibly speak of the Hippocratic oath do not even know the oath! They can neither recite the oath nor can they understand the history of the Hippocratic oath! You see, the writer of that oath knew that the calling of the doctor was a sacred one. The doctor was seen as one standing between God and men. In fact the doctor was seen as only next to the priest! Today that is not the case. Today the doctor is seen as one among many other doctors which in itself is not a problem. The only problem being that everyone agrees that the doctor is not to be seen as he once used to be seen. But everyone seems to insist that he must abide by that same oath whether he is well treated or not. The challenge in such reasoning is that Hippocrates never knew a day would come when the doctor will be treated as the scum of the earth. He never envisaged that day would come when humans won’t value their doctors. That day has now come. How Hippocrates must roll in his grave. Dear Hippocrates I wish you were alive for your people have become endangered. The teaching hospitals where doctors are trained is now being asked to be headed by non-doctors who can’t train doctors. Dear Hippocrates I wish you were alive. The government of the day doesn’t even protect its doctors. Doctors are harassed, beaten up, kidnapped and killed. No one bats a lid. The doctors then go on strike and everyone is up in arms against them. Whose fault is it that the health sector is moribund in Nigeria? Ask the other health care professionals and they will tell you it is the doctors fault. O! Hippocrates. So it is the doctors fault that health professionals pose as doctors and treat patients daily. These patients are eventually rushed into hospitals with all sorts of complications and the Hippocratic doctor is asked to right all wrongs. Whose fault is it that the health sector is moribund? Ask teachers why the education sector is comatose and they will tell you its the governments neglect. Ask even a Nigerian child why security is non existent and Nigerians will tell you its the governments fault. Ask why the Judiciary is no longer the last hope of the common man and you’ll be told the government is to blame. But ask why the health sector is hemorhhaging and the health professionals will tell you its the doctors fault! So for some reason its not the government that’s responsible for problems in the health sector… Its the doctor! If there is no frame work for regulation of health practice in Nigeria… Its the doctor. If there is no one to check public office holders who travel out of Nigeria for treatment at taxpyers expense… Its the doctor. If other health professionals are performing surgeries, transfusing patients, misdiagnosing cases, posing as medical doctors all over Nigeria… Blame the doctor. Now, the patients don’t know the difference between a medical doctor, a physiotherapy doctor, a pharmacy doctor, a nursing doctor , or a laboratory doctor, etc. Now patients ask to see their hospital consultant and a Nursing consultant appears. They ask to see a their consultant and a pharmacy consultant appears. They ask to see a consultant and a Laboratory consultant appears. O! Hippocrates. Is this the medical profession you made your hippocratic oath for? That oath should be revised. And if you think doctors shouldn’t be on strike sue them! Copied from Usman Basir(National Association of Resident Doctors) |
Oduduwaboy: They are not exposed to the same hazards ma.In my hospital, when a patient is diagnosed of HIV, TB, Lassa fever, etc, the nurses will immediately cease to attend to him. All the services will be rendered by a doctor. Now tell me why a doctor should get the same hazard allowance with them? |
I blame the government for making sure that education sector is chronically underfunded, thereby rendering the noble profession of teaching unlucrative. I bet that the students of that school do not have an Economics teacher, or they have an economics teacher who is poorly-motivated, or their economics teacher is a bad product of the Nigerian educational system. There are many secondary schools in Nigeria who do not have up to 10 teachers. It is the same problem that gave rise to a boom of private schools and lesson centres. Simply put, our government has failed us. |

zeezahbee: Can a whole curriculum be touched ? Never, some part won't be touched, same with pharmacology, most of the pharmacology I did, some medical student didn't touch that part. Still as for the microbiology, we did it, not just a bit but for 3 years ranging from chem path to chemotheraphy to immunology etcI don't know what u mean. We have no control over the nature of ailment of the patients that we are going to meet. Hence, the need to cover the curriculum. I don't know of your centre, but such practice is not obtainable where I trained. In pharmacology, I read most of Katzung and Tripathi. The only time that we did not cover our curriculum was when I was in my 1st year(Bio courses). We touched the whole curriculum from my 2nd year till the day I finished my 5th MB exam. |
zeezahbee: Get your info right, we do pharmaceutical microbiology so pathology comes in.You still don't get it. My emphasis is on NITTY-GRITTY(most important aspects of the course). Pathology is made up of MICROBIOLOGY, MORBID ANATOMY, HAEMATOLOGY/IMMUNOLOGY, and CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY. Each of these courses have sub-divisions. Doctors studied these courses in details. Take a look at the curriculum of the doctors in training to learn more. Studying few aspects of these courses is grossly inadequate to prepare you for the challenges of confronting patients. |

ige101: More drama yet to unfold, not until the Fed Govt come up with a uniform salary structure for everyone in the health sector, this drama wont cease. What we just read is not unconnected with the discrepancies in salaries of health workers. Let everyone be put on same structure and see if there won't be peace. Are you serious?! You want doctors to earn the same salary as the pharmacist who sit all day long in an air-conditioned room dispensing the prescriptions of the doctors? It will be possible if only they come to the ward and get needle pricks from the HIV positive patients or confront Lassa fever patients. There is no place in the world where the pharmacists earn as much as doctors in a hospital. So your suggestion is dead on arrival. |
Shori: ...and now you're telling me Medical students do pharmacology in details more than the pharmacy students? To your question,No.Why are you trying to appear clever by latching on one aspect of my comment? Do you think that thorough knowledge of Pharmacology prepares you enough to treat patients? What about Pathology? Can you treat a patient without knowing the pathological basis of the disease? You are picking my points selectively. That's a sign of intellectual weakness. |
Shori: I..... I'm stupefied! ''mini clinics''? ''side labs''? ''blood transfusion'' in Nigeria? Do you really have to come up with conjectures just to denigrate the pharmacy profession? Where did the transfusion illegally happened? When did it happen? It's not about the ''Dr'' title thing, but meeting up to international standards!Either you are coming from the mars or you are willfully ignorant for you to deny 'mini clinics', 'side labs' and 'blood transfusion' malpractices by the pharmacists. Your colleagues in the trade must be laughing at you. I can give you names of pharmacy shops manned by a trained pharmacists where the above malpractice is the order of the day. In Benue state, some pharmacist are even pushing the envelope further by doing some surgical procedures. Denying the obvious makes you appear dishonest. |
Shori: Tsk! Pharmacy students take Biochemistry,Anatomy,Pharmacology and Physiology with Pathology the only exception. . . Come up with something ''better'' please. . .The catchword there is NITTY-GRITTY. Even Physiotherapists/Nurses/Radiographers do study these courses too, but not in details. Does pharmacy students do practicals with cadaver? I mean dissecting cadaver region by region. It is only Anatomy/MedSurg students that does it. Moreover, how can you treat a patient without the knowledge of the PATHOLOGY behind the disease. Don't you think that this defiency in knowledge can make a difference between life and death? |
nagoma: The "wannabe Doctors" are desperate . Pharmacists , Optometrists and even ambulance drivers want to be referred to as Docrors and they refuse to go through medical school. The confusion in Nigeria's healthcare continues as we copy blindly from America. For the first time we are on the same side of the debate. It is every paramedics desire to bear the title 'Dr', but none of them wants to pass through the medical school and study the nitty-gritty of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Pathology. I was teaching a Med. Lab student Immunology, he continued to interrupt me, telling me that I was paying attention to details, reminding me that he is not a studying Med/Surg. Explaining further that he only need a general overview of the course to enable him pass exam. Tommorrow, the same guy will rub shoulders with doctors in the hospital. |
