I need answer to that, if you can't give me a concrete and plausible reason, then Nah Ogun go kee your father. Yoruba must be the stupidest people on planet earth. I have never seen a race of seemingly educated people who have no instinct for self-determination or self rule. You must be monkeys not men. pansophist: I wonder what people like Gowon, Obasanjo and other southern leaders that fought against the Igbos when they've seen this scam called Nigeria from the beginning, what were they thinking? That supporting evil elsewhere will bring justice to them? I laugh.
I can only imagine how these pawns feel when they see what Nigeria has become today, of which they were an instrument of it. A total laughing stock globally. Nigeria should split, its just the only way. Northern Nigeria are similar to the Malian and Chadians, and south more to the Ghanaians and Ivorian. And the south seamlessly compliments each other culturally and linguistically.
Like MLK once said, "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". The Igbos were bastardized in the quest for justice, and now, every other ethnic group will suffer for this. The Nigerian story. Beautiful comment. Also notice that Ghana's economy grows at 6.3%. Ivory coast grows at 7.4% and Benin grows at 6.9% We in Nigeria grow at just 1.9% if not recession. This Aboki leadership is unbearable. I can't even call myself a Nigerian anymore. This country is worthless. Burn it with fire. |

U are even using Africa as ur major point even when we have the poorest countries of the World... By the time only the poorest countries want to afford ur oil, then u'll know how low u've become
Oil matters now, but will it do so in the next 10 years? Oil (and gas) are the basis for fertilizer, plastics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuel, electricity, etc. etc. Only a fool would take the stance you are taking. The West African market for these products alone with worth billions. |

Lagos has a GDP per capita of over $5,000 according to the Financial Times of London. This number is only $1,000 less than South Africa, and it implies that Lagos could reach developed nation status ($10,000 per capita) in less than 10 years assuming an annual growth rate of 7.5% and a stable population. Separation from Nigeria would encourage massive foreign direct investment into Lagos that is currently being scared away by Fulani herdsmen, islamic terrorism and instability.
Take for example Facebook, which plans to open its Africa headquarters in Lagos in 2021. This investment will provide ultra-high paying software engineering jobs to Nigerian youths. But the Facebook deal is at risk because of "Northern governors" who want to introduce a so-called "social media bill" to destroy free speech. Fulani-Nigeria also imposes a forex burden on Lagos, making it harder for businesses to obtain the dollars they need to smoothly run operations.
Lagos would be much stronger with its own currency not being dragged down by excessive consumption and low productivity in the North. The dangote refinery alone would provide enough forex earnings to keep the Lagos currency strong and stable.
The lagos economy is strong enough to wean itself off of Federal Government allocations. The introduction of mobile money along with effective income tax and massive property tax to bring down land values would allow the Lagos government to raise tax collection up to 30% of GDP (the global standard) compared to 5% of GDP in Nigeria. This revenue would allow the Lagos government to invest in infrastructure and 24/7 electricity to allow the city to achieve that 7% annual GDP growth rate that would take it to first world status within our lifetimes. |

Nigeria won't split... Not in a foreseeable time
The World is moving away from oil... For someone who stays in America and still holds oil in high value, I should say ur reasoning is very low...
The easiest thing to achieve now is restructure... And the best way to do this is through the legislature... Its because we have so many educated illiterates that's why we think the executive can restructure.. its not their power...
If the Southern legislators can move a bill for restructuring and lobby the North Central legislators to join them, restructuring is sure...The core North will have no chance...
Finally there is no way the Niger Delta(if they want to.leave) will give the North 50% of some resources... I don't know the circumstances of the South Sudan case but for the Niger Delta to agree to such stupid idea that u are advocating, they must have some undue advantage over us with their own resources
Las Las all this Una talk go end for nairaland as one of the regularly forgotten threads
Finito Bla bla ba. Oil makes up 90% of Nigeria's export revenue and 50% of its government revenue. It is also the basis for transportation in Africa (it will take decades if not generations for Africa to go electric) so spare me the lofty speeches, and face reality. Oil matters. |

The indecisiveness of the south is what is keeping Nigeria together, until our southern elites support the notion nothing will happen you and I are powerless.. BastardWike: In the event of a full blown war between North and South, the only way the South will win is if they can hold their territory within the first 6 months of fighting. Mind you, South won't just be fighting against North but the entire Sahel region of Africa that includes Niger, Chad and Mali. During the Biafran war, Chadians and Nigerians flooded into Nigeria and fought on their federal government side.
Secondly, the world over, any side that controls the government apparatus already has a huge advantage because the other side will be regarded as rebels fighting a central government. Also, their can only be a guerilla warfare against the North/Federal government since we no longer have regions like in the first republic. Now this even makes it worse for South because the North will use its control of the government to launch direct attacks or airstrikes in the South while South can't do so against the North.
Lastly, the weak point of the South will always be the SW. Their Muslims will easily sabotage their efforts and make it possible for Northerners to penetrate. So, I wouldn't advocate war as a means of breaking Nigeria because it will take up to five years for any side to beat the other into submission and before it gets to that, up to 5 million people would be dead already and the economy would be wiped out. You people aren't serious about freedom. You would rather just make excuses and delay while the North slowly colonizes you with murderous herdsman, Dangote, and other mechanisms. By the time you wake up and start fighting, it will be too late. I'm happy I live abroad, sef. I dey tire trying to reason with slaves and monkeys. |

No, the North would literally starve on a mass scale. Their soldiers are worthless. Many are fighting without bullets or supplys because of the extreme corruption in the army. |

ProT: Presently, how many percent of the oil revenue is accrued to the North?
If u give them 50% oil revenue; What about the revenue they get from the seaports? What about the VAT they enjoy from ur consumption of alcoholic drinks? What about the access the herdsmen have over ur lush vegetation?
It would take more than 50% of oil resources to convince the North to leave her bride (the South). 50% may be more than their current allocation considering the fact that oil rich states in the south get larger allocations. Also, splitting the country would dramatically simplify the North's administration systems, leading to cost savings and massive benefits for them. They could also export their agricultural goods to the south for foreign exchange. Trust me, they will love the new arrangement. Free oil money on one side and agro exports on the other. |

Controlling the navy vs. controlling the port are two different things. A Hasua army would never be able to penetrate deep enough to take the ports in Lagos, Koko, or Port Harcourt. If they attempt a blockade from the sea, we can get supplies from Cotonou. Stop being a coward. These people will lose the war. |

ProT: What even makes u believe the North would accept that 50% deal to free something they control 100%? 50% would allow them to maintain (or even increase) their total revenue from the oil because they won't have to distribute cash to the southern states. The deal would allow Northern Nigeria to split away without sacrificing its revenue. I think splitting Nigeria will benefit the North as much as the south. They can focus all their attention on securing and governing their country instead of oppressing and mismanaging ours. |

Goodmarlian: The north has totally dominated Nigeria, I blame the yorubas for that it all started in 1966 when the war broke out ,why did yorubas allow gowon move the capital to the north form Lagos without a fight? so any attempt to split Nigeria by war ,the south will suffer heavy casualties because north dominates the military,so we southerners are doomed war or no war.. The North is landlocked, and the south controls all navigable ports. Right now, the military dynamics tilt heavily in our favor. All we have to do is block food imports to the North, and their population will starve. We also have access to the oil and gas infrastructure. They can't even refine the fuel for their planes, tanks and armored cars -- their whole army would collapse in less than a year. |

When South Sudan split from North Sudan, the two nations agreed to divide the oil revenue between them, although most of the resource is located in the South. Nigeria needs to adopt a similar strategy to break free from Northern Nigeria. Oil is the only thing that holds our people together, and as a Southerner, I am willing to give the North 50% of the oil in return for self governance and a dissolution of this mockery called Nigeria.
Southern Nigeria is the most wealthy and prosperous region on the African continent.
