Base security can 100% be conducted by effective use of indirect-fire as well as direct-fire crewed weapons. Provided, of course, your fortifications have been properly conducted.

Mortars + HMG's + ATGM's = a secure base
Mortars + HMG's + ATGM's + CAS = Fort Knox

I always preach mortar, mortar and more mortar.


A remote base should have a dozen mortars. Shell them while they advance, it breaks their formation, slows them down and if you hit them so hard they might even think of aborting the assault.

However, if they advance then as you say HMGs, ATGMs and MGLs should welcome them. This forms a perfect defensive solution. They'll be pinned down, while you slaughter them with mortar shells at close range.


It's one of the reasons why Seleka couldn't take the SANDF Bangui base.

To add... The African market is not crazy about drones. Their Treasuries want something they can paint their military colours on, something they can pose PR photos for, something they can say "look we bought an airplane for the country, you'll see it flying around" to justify spending their tight budget on.

I agree, the market is saturated but they did their market research and have a better chance of selling the SARA than with a MALE UAV.

Mark my words, all those young engineers working on SARA will all be poached by the big players once the thing is finished. As has happened before.

Engineers will always be poached, that's how it is but they'll leave behind a legacy for Denel.. As much as the Bateleur MALE is great, the Chinese already offer plenty of cheaper options. If Denel wants to play in the big league, they must build big - literally.

The number of gripen pilots changes every year as pilots get qulified. It takes years to become a gripen pilot by the way.

The manufacturer can only produce 10 a year, I read. Pakistan ordered a large number of them.. The factorline is kinda busy.

The tactics you are referring to here are used by 4th generation fighters.


Typically in missions the Gripens will escort the Hawks.

Again there more helis and transport aircraft than jets on the continent. Intercepting these with the Gripen would be useless.

as Frumentius stated, you'll need a very good reason to shoot down a heli with an A-Darter.


Nevertheless, we need more dakah dakah in the air.

When's the last time you read of a dog-fight? But should you get into one, A-Darter's got you covered.
Plus, after completing your mission with either Umbani or dumb bombs, should you encounter targets of opportunity like enemy choppers, either cannon or A-Darter will do nicely. Though you'd better have a good excuse for using a missile on a chopper instead of the Aden.

Unless you encounter an AH with AAs but that's less likely to happen in Africa unless you went looking for trouble in the Sahara

Think about it, the A-Darter is such a great AA missile, it wouldn't matter where it's launched. It doesn't need a radar so Hawks can sneak in behind a target especially those old MiGs and Sukhoi Su's with older mechanical radars then bang.

So it depends on how good the connection on the Hawks is and if it is good enough to engage at those ranges.

Remember the A-Darter was integrated to the Hawk as an effort to weaponise the Hawk giving it some air fighting capabilities...


The idea is to use the Gripen as a target tracker. So a group of Hawks on an offensive would be escorted by a Gripen.

Does anyone know if the Marlin Missile would be integrated to the Hawks like the A-Darter?
